Cam Heyward, Troy Fautanu Media Availability (Aug. 28) | Pittsburgh Steelers

did you want to get any work in in the preseason or would you find just easing your way in like I I can't remember the last preseason I've I've been in but um you know obviously I want to play but um you know my job is you know I through this process I've learned what I do need and what I don't need and you know if I don't get the Reps on the field I can still get them mentally um you know that's what I was doing last year um you know just trying to stay locked in so um it's less about you know getting the physical rep to this point you know I'll be ready for the season you've talked too about you know obviously the desire to win the Super Bowl how much better do you feel about that being closer to that objective than maybe years feel the same you know every year week one um but it's the process you got to go through nobody's crowned uh in September uh and uh everybody's fighting for the same spot um you know the goals to make the playoffs win playoff games win a Super Bowl um you can't complete the other um it's got to go in that order and so um you can't rush this process um but we got a lot of great guys that you know I think can build on that um and you know I'm just excited to see you know this journey we're about to go on speak that process talk about Russ's leadership what have you learned about the way he is working with him from you know the start you know I think he communicates very well uh I think you know whether it's running backs wide receivers o line um he wants to have that dialogue with a lot of guys um you know whether it's in a meeting uh or you know it's not as structured as that I think he does a great job of um you know working with guys and understand what they like uh and understand it's not it's it's a collaborative M you know I was watching your podcast did you think he was a good fit for this team before um before he signed here I mean you kind of recruited him right uh you know I think you know there's a there's a talent there um and you know um I don't know if I ever thought it was going to be possible but I think um things just lined up the way it was um you know and I've just got a chance to really know him um understand what type of man he is um what he's searching for what he's seeking after um you know you can't replace that you know type of you know Super Bowl experience uh playing in two wi in one um you know I'm trying to get to my first I'm trying to win it so you know soing picking his brain on that speaking of lining up in the process F face on defense going through an entire offseason you happy where where you guys are right now and with this this you know new scheme and new new people surrounding you on defense I think up front we got a a deep group uh me um Larry Keanu second second year Conor's not going to do anything uh you know um you know Le I think is really you know grown a lot um you know Dean Lowry louder milk I just think we have a a complete group up front that you know allows us to play with a lot more freedom um and then I think we've just completed a lot of other positions where you bringing a guy like Patrick Queen um djck U desan Elliott I think these guys can you know are all pieces to the puzzle to that point cam like L milk do some good things late the preseason Lowry seemed to get healthy in a hurry late as Camp was rolling along there so did that allow them to kind of move the roster the way that they did like Leal basically soaking up a lot of snaps looks like an outside linebacker because the other depth components you have along the defensive line you know mik T always talks about you know one man's Misfortune is another man's treasure and I think when you know we've had guys down it's allowed other guys to grow um you know I think hio really relished that and grew a lot when I was injured um it's just created related a lot of uh good cohesion and a lot of you know experience that you need at this level um and I think it's just going to benefit us you know I think um we're healthy at the right time but I know it's the beginning of the season but uh it's going to allow us to you know stay fresh and you know stay locked in where have you seen uh ke's game take the biggest jum forward I think uh his pass rush using his hands um when is one of ones I think he's really grown in that approach uh getting on the edge um and you know I know he's there's still more to work on with that I think uh as much growth as he had he still hasn't reached his you know his ceiling and uh looking forward to seeing him grow about Logan Lee where in his first year what have you seen yeah you know Logan's a smart guy plays with a good base um you know good hands um plays a similar style of Defense at you know Iowa before but um very knowledgeable guy um Playbook wasn't the answer I think it's just getting caught up and you know speeded everything so you know there's going to be growth there but I like where he's at you hopeful to be available for that opener yeah for sure man uh I want to be a resource to the team and whatever whatever position they have me playing or in terms of how much I'm playing is up to them I'm just kind of going out there and taking that position head on so you've had one half preseason game as as a pro you feel prepared if if they ask you to start and play September 8 play a regular season full game in the NFL yeah I mean I got no choice you know what I mean uh you know I can sit there and and wish and hope away my life away about you know wanting to play these last couple couple preseason games but that's just not how the cards unfolded so just making sure that I'm prepared and uh mentally preparing myself for anything that comes I remember you saying like after your first mini camp practice you weren't thrilled with it you got better M first training camp practice same thing you got better you haven't had the opportunity to show that you can get better after that first Texans game if it's splashing in the regular season you mentally prepared for that to take that lead 100% um for me it's just making sure that you know that I'm getting better every day I know that sounds cliche but but it's real like for me especially being a rookie coming in and um being in this room you know trying to elevate the room as much as I can and and learning as much as I can because a lot of these guys have game experience like I said like you guys said I only had a half um so just making sure that I'm taking things from them and just applying it to my routine as well going into you know whatever position they they put me in come week one or going forward
