trying to thread the needle between a a country that was still so uh wounded over obviously physically but but communally wounded over the Civil War that they wanted to be together and stay together but they also understood that in the south in order to kind of keep them in the fold they needed to let them do some of the things that they used to do meaning they lost the war but they couldn't they them really lose right lose their again I'm doing air quotes for your podcast uh audience their way of life which is disgusting I mean the people who were pushing for the state's rights agenda did not believe that the people who were their slaves just a few years earlier should have the rights that they have they didn't want to be represented by somebody of color in elected office and they did whatever they could to stop it I mean this was the time that the cl CLX clam was born the white League others which were just offshoots at the Confederacy
