it's The Unofficial Mark of fall a holiday for the workers Labor Day is a nationally recognized holiday celebrating the social and economic achievement of working Americans Hannah Jackson spoke with the Kentucky workers and about what this holiday means to them it's a good time to be in the labor U movement at this point and particularly with the laborers what was once a call for shorter work days and better conditions is now a traditional American holiday Labor Day became a national holiday in the mid 1890 aiming to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers Roots grew out of violent clashes between labor and police when thousands of workers in Chicago took to the streets to demand an 8- hour work day and so it's it's a testament to their hard work uh that they put in day in and day out and of course this is also historically you know with organized Labor uh they pushed for just the name a few things um holiday pay uh you know weekends off workplace uh you know safety I mean so just a few things that highlight what the fight's been all these years from barbecues to getaways many people across the us celebrate the holiday by finding ways to relax but now those who work in manual labor take the day to celebrate the strides made well that's what we say we build our community the laborers are the first on the job and the last to leave and just a big thank you for everything you do day in and day out and we certainly appreciate all your hard work and efforts building uh our communities Labor Day takes place the first Monday of every September and while the laborers we spoke with say they are grateful for the holiday they say there's always more work to be done in Lexington Hannah Jackson Fox 56 news
