we begin with the latest on that deadly school shooting in Georgia the accused shooter 14-year-old Co gray made his first court appearance this morning with his dad now here's the latest from priia Shar whether you're able to read and this morning the accused school shooter at the courthouse in essence you were charged with four counts of felony murder as outlined in um in the state warrants that have been issued against you for 14-year-old Colt gray facing a judge in Georgia just hours ago after the deadly mourning that left four people dead including two students and two teachers Gray's father Colin also appearing in front of the court overnight the father was charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of Cruelty to Children these charges stem from Mr Gray knowingly allowing his son col to possess a weapon two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation telling NBC News the father gave his son an AR-15 style rifle as a gift after they were interviewed by authorities last year following an online thread the same type of weapon was used in the mass shooting according to an investigator's incident report following that interview last year Colin Gray told authorities that his son was allowed to use his father's hunting rifle when supervised but quote does not have unfettered access investigators this morning are still searching for a motive indicating gray was a brand new student to the district Wednesday just his second day at the high school Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith crediting a new safety app which was implemented at the school just last week with the quick response from police and with saving lives they have a button on that ID and they press it so many times and it alerts us where that incident is occurring this morning we're also learning of heroic acts by math teacher and football coach Richard aspenwall Witnesses say he died protecting his students if he wouldn't have gone out there and and checked and seen what the commotion was who knows if that kid would have been able to come into a second classroom so he is by far a hero NBC's Priya shart with that report barl County district attorney Brad Smith says that there will be additional charges added as evidence comes in
