[Music] [Music] what do you think would happen if we all lost our sense of curiosity curiosity is such a deep part of what makes us human but this is exactly what's happening right now our curiosity is under attack we have gone from early humans who use their curiosity to find new places to forage and find food to modern humans who are directing their curiosity most of the time to a tiny screen social media in its current form is actually one of the biggest risks to human curiosity at the moment have you ever wondered why it's called a social feed people are nodding you see you see the metaphor here but it is feeding you a constant stream of information our brains are wired to Crave new information as much as they are to Crave for water or for food and social feeds are designed to exploit this tendency they keep on feeding us new content so we can't stop scrolling it makes it very hard when you keep your curiosity at a super superficial level like this to engage in really meaningful exploration to be curious you need mental space you need to feel like you have the freedom to really explore your interests without having to rush today in our environment where we're chronically stressed our brains are in survival mode which is not really conducive to curiosity and this is all due to a lot of different changes in our environment that our brains were not really prepared for constant communication constant notifications way too much information because of that our attention is scattered and when your attention is scattered so is your curiosity so when was the last time you actually directed your curid and were fully in control of how you used it when was the last time that you had an episode of purposeful curiosity chances are that this was longer ago than the last time you had an episode of curiosity that was controlled by an algorithm the time to be curious is now thank you [Applause] [Music]
