Zack Wilson was awesome for the Denver Broncos today against the Arizona Cardinals in their preseason finale but does that mean that he should be the backup quarterback listen Zack Wilson the trajectory that we've seen from him throughout the course of this off season has been awesome at the start of the offseason he really struggled to pick up Shawn Payton's offense he was struggling getting play calls out in the Huddle he was struggling with the pre- snap operation and he was making extremely erratic throws the splash plays were always there Zack Wilson has always been a guy who can absolutely sling The Rock armed Talent has never been the question for Zack Wilson physical tools physical gifts have never been the question for Zack Wilson it's what's between the ears it's how does he process the game at the speed that he needs to process it to be an NFL level quarterback those have been his biggest issues in his three years with the New York Jets and it was his biggest issue towards the beginning of camp but he has shown that he has made significant improvements in that area and that is coaching all the way man the fact that this man is finally receiving some quality coaching I feel happy for him because he needs it and he's taking to it well he's being a sponge out there he just hasn't had the level of offensive coaching that he has here in Denver with Shawn pton with Joe Lombardi with Davis web as his quarterback coach that's a very quality structure to have around him not to mention he's got Bo Nicks and Jarrett STM in that quarterback room who are almost like coaches on the field in their own right this is an awesome situation for Zack Wilson to develop and we saw the flashes of Brilliance in today's game from ripping a ball behind the defender's ear on a backside dig to two beautiful shots to the turkey hole or the honey hole or just a ho shot against cover two whatever you want to call it both of them were gorgeous including that touchdown to Brandon Johnson that was awesome he had a rushing touchdown on a QB sneak had another really nice run on a scramble drill um all kinds of really awesome stuff out there Broncos country I love what we saw from Wilson I also loved what we saw from him just his Poise his footwork his feet leading him through his progressions I loved that so so good so so good I'm so happy to see this development from Zach Wilson but where I pumped the breakes a little bit is you still see those erratic plays from Zach Wilson two near interceptions today including one on a screen where he threw it basically in the D lineman's belly I I have to review the play again but it looked like the lineman wasn't even expecting it and he just dropped the ball because he was like what the hell is this doing in my belly um so that was not a great play from Zach Wilson had another one where it was a close call tried to drive it into a tight window and it nearly got picked off you see those erratic plays so what I'm questioning is does Shawn Payton want his qb2 to be a guy who has those same plays just like another quarterback with the last name of Wilson that the Broncos are playing are paying $35 million to no longer play for them that is the question I have Shawn Payton likes a quarterback who can operate consistently on time in rhythm in structure we saw plays today where Zack Wilson did operate on time in rhythm in structure but we also saw those plays where they were routine plays where he had two near inter receptions where he should have been on time in Rhythm and structure it's just the consistency between J between Jarrett SDM and Zack Wilson Jarrett's not going to give you those Splash plays that Zach Wilson is Zach is going to be aggressive with the ball Jarrett STM is going to be very safe with the ball but as a backup quarterback who would you rather have come into the game Fresh Off the Bench cold no warm-ups if B Knicks gets the wind knocked out of him and you need a guy to finish a drive or finish a half or whatever it is I think it's the guy that you want to be consistent operating the offense consistently on time in Rhythm and structure notice how many times I'm using the word consistent because that's what it is with Zach Wilson it's consistency Jarrett stum is just the more consistent player operating Shawn Payton's offense the way he wants it operated that's why I feel like as a backup quarterback he is the better option to come in the game hold off the bench on a moment's notice or let's say b knck rolls his ankle and they need Jared SDM to potentially start for a game I think he could go in there and for four quarters efficiently execute the offense and at least be able to keep the Broncos in Rhythm let's say it's I don't know week 15 I'm just pulling that number out of my head I think that's the Indianapolis Colts game let's say B knck is dealing with a little bit of an injury and you need a guy to go in there I feel like Shawn Payton would be more comfortable with Jared stum but as far as Zack Wilson is concerned I feel like this is going to be a big year for him to sit on the bench as the qb3 and develop be a sponge with the coaching that you're getting this year be a sponge in the classroom be a sponge on the sidelines watching Bo Nicks play this is going to be an awesome opportunity for him and let's I'm just going to say that the Broncos are in playoff contention they've already locked up a playoff spot and they can sit starters in that week 18 game obviously there's many steps that has to happen before that can happen but let's just say that that does happen I feel like Zach Wilson is the guy that you would start in that game just to see what you have in him and get a get him a showcase game get him some good tape out there for either the Broncos to potentially resign him as the long turn Backup backup quarterback option or for another team out there to potentially sign him and then Denver could recuperate a compensatory draft pick back that's always some food for thought another thing and I don't want to even entertain this because this would be like worst case scenario for the Broncos but if Bo Nicks knock on wood goes down with a season ending injury at that rate just put Zack Wilson in and let him showcase what he can do I feel like the immediate number two on on game day is going to be Jarrett stum but there are scenarios out there where we could see Zach Wilson play this year and especially that playoff scenario you know I think that's a very possible one I really do I think that Bo I think that Zack Wilson is going to have a very great opportunity here in Denver this year to make millions of dollars next year I really do Shawn Payton said it himself his goal is to make Zack Wilson millions of dollars whether it's here or whether it's elsewhere and it looks like right now he's got a good chance to potentially be the long-term backup here if he's content being a backup quarterback then I would love to have Zach Wilson here long-term as my backup but right now with stdy still here Shawn Payton has said in his postgame presser today that he pretty much said it without saying it that the Broncos are keeping all three of their quarterbacks so City's going to be the guy who can come in on game day in an emergency situation he can be the mop-up guy if we blow somebody out Zack Wilson is the guy who's there to potentially start a game if we need somebody to start a game like towards the end of the season if the Broncos have already locked up a playoff spot or worst case scenario God forbid B Knicks goes down then it's Zack Wilson time baby so that is where things stand with Zach Wilson right now he put out some awesome tape today he really did so good
