hello and welcome to this episode of Kennedy saves the world it's that time of year it's the day after Labor Day and so many parents are sending their college freshman off to school and uh it can be a very Bittersweet moment for many many parents I remember last year uh we drove to Ohio to drop P off and it was the entire family it was her dad and her sister and I we helped her move in and decorate her dorm room we had a big family dinner it was so emotional and moving and I was reading about a good friend of mine I've known him for years since before he and his wife had twin daughters who just turned 19 and they're off for their freshman year they're going to two different schools and um it's it's heartbreaking because you see your kids as kids until the moment uh they make that first adult transition and for us like my girls had only spent two weeks away at gymnastics camp a few years ago before the pandemic that was really uh the only significant time we had spent apart so it was a shock and a transition but let me tell you it does get easier when they go back to school and start their sophomore year because when they come back their freshman here they do think that they are little adults uh who've lived independently and and rules don't necessarily apply to them they're mere suggestions so uh the first go around when they're freshman the house feels empty the family incomplete and you can't wait for that text and that phone call and and that Sunday evening FaceTime where you can all gather around and hear about classes and challenges and friend groups and long walks to the center of campus and then they return for the summer and you're like w I missed you so much I'm I'm really glad you have your room back because uh I it was probably my fault that I took advantage of it and used it as storage in a deao gym and it was it was really hard when she returned for her sophomore year and you know having to move my uh my bike back into that room on the the trainer and exercise and peace and in her room with no distractions from anything else in the world and you know moving uh my handbags back into her closet and some of the other bulkier things like luggage you know it really has become a a mini Time Square luggage store I I should put a big going out of business sale because there's so much room in her closet now that we can store pretty much anything in there which is also where we have to uh store our grief for not having our College sophomore around all day and all night and well into the wee hours of the morning so just know um parents of college freshman it is tough now but it gets so so much easier when they go back for their sophomore year you'll see what I'm saying next year but until then I I feel your pain I I feel your emptiness but somehow uh that that space will grow whole again when you start to repurpose things that you never could have imagined when you didn't realize that you needed that extra space as well and it's their independence their growing Independence that's really making them into wonderful human beings unless they go to Columbia University which has become an absolute poophole here in New York City I will do anything I can to avoid protests avoid the protesters avoid people who have recently bought cfas who know nothing about Islam or probably Judaism for that matter certainly not Zionism yet they are now lecturing us on genocide divestment and foreign policy so the former president of Columbia was kicked to the curb not because she didn't do enough to clear away the encampments and stop the vandalism and outright Jew hate on her campus but because she called the police on the the pramas protesters who had taken over a very expensive Ivy League school rendering those diplomat is essentially useless now so this morning I talked to one of my friends as these news reports kind of pour in from all over the place the Daily Mail and Fox News two of my favorite employers and we're seeing that there are Jewish students that are very scared to go back to the school that they were once so proud to be accepted into and their parents were probably very sad when they were freshmen and they dropped them off maybe from other parts of the country or other parts of the world and now their sadness has been replaced by Terror whether or not they have a Jewish student but if they do and uh they humbly exhibit signs of their faith they will be targeted harassed and uh maybe injured so that's what is still happening and it's very interesting because in Israel they're protesting because they want the government to do more to bring about a ceasefire uh after those six hostages were brutally murdered over the weekend um but instead the pro Palestine promas people they were really excited about it and uh they feel like they've got some forward momentum in a cause that has not been very well explained it's mostly just shouted at you and if you ask any questions they start swearing at you and then they film you so uh that's quite a lark if you want to go way way up town in mid mid in Manhattan rather and uh tangle with some very very angry irrational people who have chosen free Palestine as their cause dour because believe me it will change next year they will radicalize about something else and they will invade something other than these big city college campuses like Columbia and UCLA which hasn't started started classes yet but when they do hey Colombia All Eyes are on you because if you don't do anything about this problem in the name of free speech while you're limiting free association of your Jewish students well UCLA is going to be looking to do the exact same thing only bigger and while our mayor here in New York Eric Adams seems to be frustrated that the sanctuary city has turned into a war zone outside of certain shelters Karen bass who is the commi progressive mayor of Los Angeles she hates the police and she loves the pro Palestine protesters so we'll see how these things play out but if you're going to flush 500 Grand down the toilet on an Ivy League education I might rethink that if I were a parent because I think that would make me sadder than anything at all knowing there was going to be pretty much zero return on my investment if if my child returns home radicalized Angry and unable to name capital cities around the world but there's always trade schools there's always uh Pipe Fitters and welders and plumbers and my God those trades need warm bodies so why don't you save yourself a bunch of money buy some books off of a recommended professor's list and do your reading yourself and then go to trade scho SCH and actually get yourself a job with no debt and guaranteed employment for probably close to six figures when you graduate see all the problems have been solved and there's always room for a new solution and an old suitcase this husb been Kennedy Saves the World I'm Kennedy
