[Music] want to be at work today instead I'm taking my mom to the view it's from novemberists making team goodbye we'll change who's in line to replace her to rock shocked and slipped up at last night's American Music Awards and find out which celebs Sherry was bumping and grinding with this weekend plus Zac Efron and Claire Danes are telling you how they handled hordes of streaming fans while filming their new movie me and Orson Welles and Nora Jones is performing her brand new hit it's gonna be and one of her classics [Music] all that hot topics and more coming up live on The View [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right [Applause] well hey hello and welcome to the view good morning ladies good morning well I don't know if y'all were up last night but the American Music Awards were on and we wanted to show you why Adam lampert's performance shocked so many people but we actually can't show you what it was because we were told it was inappropriate for daytime TV it was inappropriate for nighttime TV I think if you ask most people can I just say I love my network I've worked here for many years this was shown on ABC but the fact that you can watch it at night and kids can watch it at night but because he does quote sexual things we can't show it I love uabc but it's absurd see I'm okay with not showing it because quite frankly I found it to be really over the line and I think in the case was one of his dancers he he led two of his dances by leash but then he took one of the dancers heads and he grounds it into his crotch it simulated oral sex one of the second things that he did when he put his hand underneath one of the dances legs and pretended like it simulated like he was pulling it was a woman then he he uh were you really making me change my mind [Laughter] he used his finger in finally one of the dancers I won't go any further so this was this was really this really made people crazy not like some of the other things that have been on the amas over the years like various uh folks well Madonna and and Christina Aguilera Madonna and Spears in each other you know it's it seems crazy because Christina and then she kissed Brittany everyone loves a lesbian kiss it's when two guys are kissing can I read what he says it says he says this is what Adam Lambert said he said it's a shame because I think that there's a double standard going on in the entertainment Community female performers I've been doing this for years pushing the envelope about sexuality and he says if ABC if there's a if they're going to run it again cuts on your part in the performance for the rebroadcast it will be bound to quote discrimination he says they didn't censor Brittany Madonna uh making it on stage yet two men kissing they'll censor that's true [Music] there was an aggression that was sort of that came across just from subjectively and seeing it seemed to be an aggression a sexual aggression that came across in the performance now does anyone know what song he's saying and does anyone remember what he sounded like because let me tell you this this is a mistake Adam Lambert will make time and time again we will not remember him as a performer or someone with a voice if he continues to do things like this he'll smarten up and sing okay by the way by the way are not 10 Most Fascinating People program which is on December 9th at 10 o'clock Adam you're on ABC here on ABC my wonderful Network that I never criticized this is one of the questions that we put to Adam Lambert which is you know does all of this stuff take away from your singing we also have and she did a performance last night Lady Gaga in which she breaks through a glass window to get to her piano which then goes up in Flames she is also one of our Most Fascinating People and again this is a woman with a very good voice and this is a woman who's a very good writer but does all of this stuff take away from her singing nobody comes out and sings anymore everything is she's a good singer she said that she's pulling them in at Radio City I saw that but by the way one of the things that's so interesting in our special yeah and then that's the last it's not the last book special that's on when the special that's on December 9th at 10 o'clock I'm expecting her to come out like this wait till you see how she comes out oh God here's my question about that is like the stuff the nightmares are made out of I was like what in the world is with Lady Gaga I like that that's like science it was all lit up that's very cool but here's but no she just said nobody you know these are performance artists they're performers and you know we have been in the era of you know crazy performances people coming down from the ceiling but here's my question people were sort of crutching about the fact that their little kids could watch it because it was on what are their kids doing up at 11. it used to be kids went to bed at nine o'clock and then you could have all kind of crazy stuff going on well let me finish saying it you can have all kinds of crazy stuff going on in TV now people have decided that their children can stay up later but television has not caught up with that you know what I'm saying with Adam Lambert if I can say Adam Lambert came from it we didn't know Adam Lambert before American Idol a lot of adults don't vote on American Idol it's the kids that are voting so if they're staying up they're staying up because they want to see Adam Lambert perform yes but if you've been paying attention to Adam Lambert you know he's not the same kid if you read about this boy he's very clear about the kind of stuff that he does and who he is and it's not and it's sexuality and he is not ashamed of it so it you have to know if you're going to let your kids watch him he could go in any direction he chooses yeah because I don't think we can expect that the music industry or even the entertainment industry at this point to protect our kids it still comes down your job is to protect your kids that's your job that's not their job [Applause] and the children who are going to be offended by what the three-year-olds who are home don't know what's going on and the older kids should be at school no a lot of them are home with the flu right now actually they're watching at home DVR they can watch it anytime they want but any time slot you know he's talking about okay go ahead yeah good okay because we're talking about television and what you can do and what you can't do we all I think have been in the Oprah Winfrey school of life and she announced last week that she will be leaving her daytime talk show in 2011. now millions of fans are reacting like they're losing a a dear friend and as opposed to more a TV host but what do you guys think I mean is should folks be responding like this now when they have a good two years before she's going anywhere but I think she'll respond this way maybe in three months and six months I think Oprah Winfrey is a a best friend to people it's like she you went through your weight loss struggles with Oprah everybody remembers when she carried that fat out in the in the wagon uh you went you know so I think we've been two years and so it's it's kind of like a long time 2009 is about to end so we're going to it's two years she's not going off next week and folks are responding like she's not gonna what she's gonna be here for two years you know Marshall mcluhan the famous Marshall mcluhan he said that television is a cool medium people are cool you're just detached she is a warm personality on a cool medium people love that she comes into your living room she gives a damn about you she seems toe she cares about Africa she cares about America people is they need time like you need time to wean a baby that's two different things one why is she celebrated we all know I have known Oprah I did one of the earliest interviews with Oprah I knew before you did well and you knew before you did The Color Purple um and I also used to say and still does and I was always very proud that when she began she would emulate me she would sit the way I sat and talk the way I talked about it no I have I have nothing but the most wonderful things to say about Oprah but from day one she is her own reality show we have gone through the fact that her terrible childhood the fact that she had that she had a child that died the the weight the everything she has been in herself so open um and it's a different question people are going to miss her but it's also you know as you say it is they've got two years too but it also makes her not that she needs anything to make her more appealing but now people will really want to catch I mean every single morning people wanna two years not miss it know what the question really is why is she doing it she was doing it she is she says she's been doing a network she's it's not as if she's retiring and she's going to stay home and she's going away she's going to have her own network in two years do not appear on it she can do specials she and also she says she's like and this was very controversial she said she wants to get out of Chicago because it's too cold and she's going to go to her mansion in Montecito and I've seen that mansion in two years whatever Oprah is going wherever she is going she's going to do what she always does she's an upright stand up rod like Oprah a lot so relax she's not going next week you have a good two years to spend with Oprah and we'll be right back with more Hot Topics now Congressman Patrick Kennedy said he was asked by a Rhode Island Bishop to stop receiving communion because of his stance on abortion the church has been sparring with lawmakers about abortion restrictions in the health care bill but is this sort of the right tactic I mean is it the right tactic to to do to say you cannot come and take communion when on one hand you know Teddy his father his father Teddy Kennedy was pro-choice and Teddy Kennedy was divorced and they all the Bishops and whatever went to his funeral he was not denied communion so this seems political to me I really don't tell I don't get it exactly he was asked not to take communion communion in 2007. so why I'm wondering why is he bringing it up now bringing it up because someone brought it up again I mean this is my home state so it's interesting I've done you know a couple of breast cancer walks with uh Patrick Kennedy before you know I'm not uh the the Catholic church in terms of communion I remember one of my friends who got divorced they asked her not to go up and take communion and to me communion is the opportunity for someone to take part in and and and and enjoy the sacrament as well so I never even from a young age I never appreciated when someone was not allowed to go up and receive communion with the rest of the church it was supposed to be without sin you're supposed to be completely you go to confession you get the Absolution and then you can receive communion that's the way it works but it doesn't always work that way I mean they don't allow divorce or not then yet if you're married if you're married 25 years and you have five children you have a lot of money you can get an annulment so I mean there's a lot of hypocrisy in every religion I thought in the Catholic church that in the Bible at least as I remember it and I could be fuzzy on this but I thought that you that God pretty much says to you you don't have to talk to anybody but me but you don't have to you don't have to talk to anybody but me and I'm the I'm the one I'm your I'm the one you don't need a liaison now great if you happen to go into the church but basically your relationship with God is personal and and very clear so I don't think anybody is supposed to tell you what you can't participate in I don't remember that as being because they recently clashed over the church statement that they won't back Health Care overall without title restrictions but I'll tell you what doesn't have any political political overtones somebody's sitting here at our desk had a wild weekend and I'm not saying who it is but I'm not saying what she was doing I don't have a lot of wild weekends Barbara I have my wild times here on the couch no just a moment last week you had the WWI thing WWE WWE I've had you and you and you are a hot and heavy that was so sweet that was last week this is this week this weekend because I've been having this little Twitter kind of thing going back and forth with Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids on the Block y'all remember him when he came on and yes and so he had he's got a single called the back rub so he had it at a club in Atlanta and I was there signing my book permission slips and I decided to crash the party and um name of that book oh permission slip is that the one you wrote that's the one that I wrote that's right anytime soon at the same time but she signs paperback editions exactly but I uh I crashed the party and it was tons of women there and Donnie saw me I don't know how but he saw me and he put me in a chair and he gave me he gave me a little dance she doesn't know how I mean it might have I I don't know just call me crazy but I don't you're probably one of four black women in the room so maybe he was able to spot you we'll be right back next week with even more Hot Topics I'm scared to ask foreign [Applause] health care bill includes a five percent tax on cosmetic surgery regardless of whether the procedure is covered by insurance or not and the tax would bring in between five and eight billion a year 86 percent of cosmetic surgery middle class working women 35 to 50 making 55 000 a year so I mean should they I mean put a tax on I mean what who's going to decide what it is what what is cosmetic surgery if you've lost a breast to breast cancer is that going to be considered cosmetic surgery this is considered reconstructive surgery which probably would fall into another category by the way most cosmetic surgery and I could be wrong okay but most cosmetic surgery which is strictly cosmetic which is everything from Botox to having your nose fixed if you don't have a deviated septum it's not covered by Insurance anyway because it's like I don't know you know buying makeup they see it so I probably if it something that you're doing for medical reasons you would have I would assume you know documentation because there is cosmetic surgery that's done but the reason it's called cosmetic and not surgery is that it's Cosmetics I'm not I'm not totally against attacks on it because it's a good idea even though my face will be paying more tax than I will be but there's there's a possibility that that people will not feel this need to look younger and younger and younger and better maybe some older people my insurance to cover something you know what I'm paying for I pay for insurance all every month I'm a boodle of go I pay for insurance and it does not seem to cover Jack you mean [Applause] nothing has happened to you where you have to see what it would cover because you know what that's not solid here's the thing at this point you have the opportunity now and insurance companies now need incredible reform does our whole medical system but I think that there is at least opportunity for another one to come and compete against it and I think that that's what we're looking this can start off as a Botox is what I'm calling it because it's right and it's going to start off like that eventually though where's that line going to be drawn and whose line isn't it isn't it better to tax something like this so that we can get money back into the United States rather than tax middle class people that everybody's always complaining about tax these gonna happen and not the other but if this can how much money did you say was going to make a couple of billion dollars that's a great idea cigarettes and syntaxes I'm sorry I pay enough damn syntax okay I pay 50 no I want to send you know no you don't have to pay for sin because look I'm taxed every time I stepped outside of my house you get taxed on your telephone taxed on stuff you can't see going through the air it ends up there's tax text every time I turn around someone's behind Republican all right you know what I I am none of those things well no I don't mind paying tax I don't mind it right but I am not the all together go to the well all the time I also have the same with that well but people agree with that but that's why I'm saying you know what I pay a lot of tax and I take good care of myself and if I want to have one bad thing that I do I don't want to have to pay 50 tax because other people aren't taking care of them okay like what would you do McDonald's I am tired of people saying oh it's going to what's more because you're over at McDonald's what if I weigh 14 pounds and go to McDonald's why are you going to tax me I think majority of that giveaway an argument now I think that because the tax bill went through the house and they're Senate there's not going to be conferences you think we're discussing this will go on and on and it will be everything so we've got a long way to really fast I'd like to just plug my show tonight because we have on tonight on the HLN at nine o'clock on my other show we have the girl who uh helped Sarah Palin do her wardrobe the 150 000 okay and then Wednesday Bill Murray so I just want people and you have to do what you do yes the holidays are all about giving and this holiday season Sears gift cards are the smartest gift of all they never expire and you can use them to purchase great holiday gifts like sweaters and jewelry for the people on your list and guess what so you can start shopping you are all going home with 150 dollars yeah and we will be right back with Claire Danes and Zac Efron there's a new movie coming out that's how me and Austin Wells I like almost everything about it except the bad grammar anyway it doesn't sound as good awesome Ross and I right Zac Efron who does sound good stars as a young actor who gets the chance of a lifetime and Claire Danes co-stars is an icy production assistant who seems to be melting a bit who wouldn't take a look there's so much more to life than just being an actor what you're doing mincing around the stage mincing oh come on you know what I mean all that ego up there it's exciting we might have a show that closes Thursday night or we might have a show that people will remember for 50 years probably neither one of those but you never know that's what's so exciting you're cute yes [Applause] all right [Applause] okay so let's get to important things we'll wait a little bit for them to talk about me and us and Orson Welles in the eye but um People magazine has the sexiest man alive issue and of course you were one of them and yes but however take a look at that chest I am not going to ask you to take this off what they said is that you have the best nail chest now did you audition for this did you know that this was going to happen it's an intensely competitive you know um category to win I had to petition I had to get like a thousand signatures I was like door to door please please will you sign this did you show everybody did you go door-to-door showing everybody your chest and how did you miss my house Mrs Robinson calm down yeah this is a very different woman than the woman who interviewed Sarah Palin that is but the fact that she should know that the main thing with you is the hair it's all about the hair and I heard you have a little secret to why the hair is so fabulous um this is getting out of hand uh no you I uh the secret but top secret um is I it's it's best to shower before you go to sleep and go to hair you go to bed with your hair wet and then it wakes up really it messes that doesn't work for me okay I know that I know that when you heard about the role right you were you were a little nervous yes to work with Claire and then when you heard that you're the character actually falls for her you thought that the nerves kind of inched up a little bit more right true well I should Justin hair was nervous no um yeah it was because I respect her so much and and she has such an incredible body of work and she's so amazing incredible body of work don't make them sorry they showed up today I know you don't talk a lot about your husband but he came here uh Hugh Nancy uh he was an Adam a wonderful performance he's at the gym and you don't talk about but I want to ask you because he was here so you guys got married in France in September um how you like a married life girl I love it I have to say I mean I'm still very new at this being married business but um I don't know there's a deep sense of security that comes with it that is really special so when you looked at Hugh how did you know okay Hugh is the one well he's pretty easy to look at he's um no but uh I I just our friendship really deepened over time and he's he's just great in every in everything about the the theater you were working in on you know lots of actors believe that the theaters that they're in are haunted right is that possible that you guys were in a haunted theater well they say so they say they claim it taunted which I didn't realize until after we'd finished filming which I'm quite grateful for because I would have been yeah so far we're asking all about your sexual activities yeah but let me explain why they might think it was haunted because we haven't said what this is about okay oh yeah I would have yeah I would have gotten around here yeah well the movie right okay the movie It's called me Anderson Wells and it's it's a uh it's from a 1937 Mercury Theater which at that time was very famous production of Julius Caesar which is at that the movie being directed by a young Orson Welles if you don't know who Orson Welles are and you've seen Citizen Kane that was a picture of him when he was young he is one was one of the great uh genius directors both in films and in and on the theater okay so you play a young guy who comes and and works for the great Orson Welles and you are the production assistant right I'm Orson welles's Girl Friday is this part I mean there was a junior Caesar it was directed and it was as what we talked about in this in this theater but is the rest of it true uh well actually our sort of love triangle with Orson is one of the things that was embellished but the character that you play exists yes yeah it was actually yeah he lives here but we uh initially um um the author of the novel Robert kaplow saw a picture of this you know kid playing a Loot next to Orson Wells and he said that that must be an interesting story so tried to get to the bottom of it and um this is this is really the story that came out of it it's a terrific film I enjoyed it very much yeah it's a coming-of-age story about a boy who grows up in the theater exactly it's amazing it's like all the coolest moments and the best things that can happen to you with um a life I'm sure there's a lot of a lot of hoopla with the pup from the paparazzi around you right Zach because he's a he's in that now you know he's in that it's pretty intense was it intense is it do you watch what Leonardo DiCaprio too that's true yeah was it like that for Leo too I think it's even more extreme now I mean I think you know tabloid culture has grown even in the last 10 years pretty substantially and with the internet there's there's just there's a lot more attention's question though was it theater Hunter oh no that's the rumor but do you think it's very very old and there's all kinds of really like secret hidden entrances and basements under the stage and actually there's all kinds of really old signatures from actors that have been there I mean in the 30s and 40s so there's probably some experience any visitations though so learn things about the theater you know that you have to have some bad luck at the last minute which happens in the film yeah yeah you have to have something and then actually this really did happen yeah and actually what happens in the movies um I set off a kind of a smoke alarm and um it's it starts raining in the theater so the whole theater gets soaked and uh that was he doesn't do what he's supposed to do though yeah who right the young man when that happens but he's not haunted here and we're happy to have you anytime singly together however you want to come just just call it Orson Welles and I and not me and Orson Welles it opens in select cities on Wednesday November 25th Nora Jones has sold more than 36 million albums worldwide her latest CD the fall is getting rave reviews and we're thrilled she's here for the first time please welcome the very talented Nora Jones [Applause] [Music] we're doing air kiss thank you you know Nora one of my spies tells me that you do not like the red carpet why I mean I don't love it either but why don't you like it well I've never really I've only done it once and it was because I had to but um I think I just don't want to be a fashion don't basically oh you don't want to be oh they put you in the magazines as a baby dresser I like looking at it now I just uh I'm not against it I just I'm afraid to be in it some of the biggest stars are on the don't list you should be welcome as a badge of honor I know I guess maybe maybe I'll get over it soon and try it I like how lucky you are I really do you've had some you know incredible collaborations in the past Willie Nelson Dolly um your father Ravi Shanker am I saying that correct um legendary Indian musician have the two of you ever collaborated on anything that we have just haven't heard yet or is it are there plans to well I don't know if there's plans to the type of music he plays is such a intense tradition and you kind of have to know something about it to play it so it's very specific it's very specific yeah so maybe they may maybe I don't know if I could get him to play on a Hank Williams song Someday but I somehow doubt it but but the song that you're going to sing It's Gonna be Me yeah it's gonna be yeah it's going to be yeah it's gonna be and I understand it's about the pitfalls of celebrities tell me about that oh it's more about um just watching the news and being frustrated sometimes that there's more news about celebrities than the stuff you really want to know I say yeah just about the the paparazzi and what's going on with John and Kate yeah it's like did I really want to just read that article no I probably didn't but how do you I mean it's got to be a discipline trying to keep away from all that you know and I want to ask you about acting because I know you worked with July a few years back right and then you just were in the finale for uh the season finale for 30 Rock any future acting in there oh well I'm open to it it was really fun but I think I'm gonna focus on music for now we like that Focus you're very talented glad to have her here to perform it's going to be off her new album The Fall is Nora Jones
