[Music] thank you again I'm bottom of our hearts for making this available Secretary of State writes who has had an extraordinary career career in academics public policy work Secretary of State first female African-American to hold that job the first female African-American to be National Security adviser has been in her life and in her career a witness to a just been in in shaper of extraordinary events uh we are delighted to have her here on rac's campus as a guest of the baker Institute of policy to speak to challenges facing Americans here in the United States as well as overseas I think this will be a fascinating armchair discussion and then questions I am proud to introduce the recipient of the baker prize for excellenc and Leadership a person of vision who believes that as she once said great leaders never never accept the world as it was and always work for the world as it should be it is a distinct honor to award the baker prize to condalisa [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Rice somehow we've gotten to the place that it's the politics now of jealousy and the politics of anger it it's actually not the politics of Interest right my interest is in doing X Y or Z exactly it's the politics of first of all my interest is in stopping you and secondly it's not just my interest it's your moral failure that you don't agree with me and so that is a different tone to the politics it's a different framework for the politics and we've had in the past and I know we've had extreme passions before in our politics for goodness sakes we had a Civil War so we had extreme passions but uh this is every issue gets framed in this way every issue the more the more extreme you are the more likes you will get and the more you will get on the evening news channels and so there is a premium Now on being as disagreeable as you possibly can she's definitely like an incredibly impressive person and I think for any young person having the opportunity to overhear a conversation like that hear from her point of view like and especially like a conversation sort of space it's beneficial for everybody I know people from all different majors at Rice that are excited about this event
