ladies and gentlemen boys and girls children of all ages welcome to Robert Sports I'm your host Robert all right little reaction to the news that broke yesterday Denny Hamlin gets an L2 penalty which means loss of 75 driver points 75 owner points 10 playoff points and crew chief Chris gabart fined $100,000 it was reported by Jeff Glock that tierd discovered and self-reported the Hamlin engine violation had nothing to do with Joe gives racing and the 11 team but it is who gets the penalty obviously penalties are tied to the teams themselves the drivers um from everything that I've read these engines have to be ran multiple races so when he won the Bristol race um NASCAR will put a tag on the engine block um probably between the heads in the block like you see at the gas stations so it's like a tampering tag you know if that tags been moved cu the only piece of people that have those tags are NASCAR and apparently TRD took the engine from the joi's racing shop back to their Costa Mesa California engine shop tore it down to rebuild it realized this race hasn't been run a second time they weren't supposed to do that what they should have done is take it to NASCAR have NASCAR take it apart and then they can rebuild it um but violation of that rule cost Den hamlon 75 owner points and Driver points the statement put out by David Wilson of TRD as the engine builder for our partner Nascar Cup Series teams TRD is solely responsible for handling and distrib of all of our engine pre and post race despite procedures being in place Den's racing winning engine from Bristol was mistakely returned to our trust and Bas facility disassembled and rebuilt instead of being torn down and inspected by NASCAR per per the ru book although we know with absolute certainty the engine was legal and would have passed inspection we left NASCAR in impossible position because they were not given the opportunity to properly inspect our engine we have reviewed our processes and have implicated several additional steps to ensure this never happens again TRD takes full responsibility for this Grievous mistake and apologize to Denny Chris coach Gibbs and the entire JJ organization NASCAR and our fans so what that ends up meaning the 10 Player points is huge that's two races um the Bristal race quote is incumbent kind of like Austin Dillan Richmond win so what that means is if Denny had one win and it would have been Bristol he would not be locked into the playoffs but thankfully Denny as a Denny Hamilton fan thankfully I know there's quite a few Denny ham non Denny hamlon fans out there that's okay Ro for your favorite driver um because Denny w at Richmond and at Dover he is already locked into the playoffs now one thing else is will do if Denny is in a tie for any points position with say U William Byron who's got three wins technically Denny has three wins yes but one of them doesn't count so he would only have two wins based on Ty record because that personal win wouldn't count um so that drops him to six them points right now now he was fighting for the regular season title with actually his own driver so right now Denny Hamlin is 103 points out of the regular season title without this penalty he was 28 points away from winning the regular season title with two races left um so his hopes of a regular season Championship pretty much have gone by the wayside because remember two races left the most you can get in One race is 120 points the least amount you can get in each races obviously zero points but two points give you start each race um so figure even 120 points yeah yeah it's still tight for him to possibly win the regular season title um it happens you know things happen mistakes happen no one's perfect but the fact that this big penalty came this close to the end of the regular season and now I'm going to again I'm a Denny Hammer fan so maybe I'm looking at it differently maybe I'm not but the fact I don't think jgr was cheating I don't think Toyota was cheating Denny wasn't cheating this was an honest mistake because from what I understand from B pakis and Jordan bian when nasar inspect these cars after a race win they do a compression check on the engine and they do a visual inspection of the engine they don't tear the engine itself apart so the car passed inspection let's not let's not you know get away from that this car pass inspection everything passed the visual inspection on that engine they just didn't have NASCAR ter depart and check the insides of it out the fact that Toyota every other engine does get sent to NASCAR except for that one and torn apart and that that one engine raced in One race so it's not like they've R an engine two or three times and won both of them and skirted the rules and took it back under to close the darkness no it's not what happened mistakes happen no one's perfect but I think is going want to be a big hit toward Denny Denny Hamlin's not only regular season points Championship or regular season play year in yeah season any points playoff points they took 10 he went from third points to six that's an additional what four points So in theory this right now the way it sits right now cost him 14 playout points those 14 playout points can matter going from Martinsville to Phoenix so we'll keep an eye on Denny's playoff run and see how that affects it if at all um but I think Denny hin can still win a championship in 2024 despite this but there just a little reaction in my opinion on what happened with the L2 penalty issue to the number 11 Denny Hamlin
