Bell's back Jordan loves holding out and it's Missouri Valley media day that's a great tease hot mik starts right now hot mik with dom ISO really really Dom I like what Dom's doing Dom ISO come on Dom what do you think I am a magician yeah I'm fired up Dom what else could I say absolutely I was great to get on the field and then Dom came up to me and I'm trying to walk away from you I just wanted to enjoy myself out there hot Mike great job there's got to be some kind of intelligent question about something is hot mik hot Mike on the networks of wdy you know if it's not about sports I find it very hard to concentrate here's Dom ISO Dom [Music] ISO good Tuesday Morning welcome to the well we're going to hear of talk edition of hot Mike on wdy extra KFL TV hello su falls at inforum.com 23rd day of July 20124 big man is back producing I'm not sure if he can confirm or deny how many cars He tipped over in Minneapolis this weekend after the Brewers swept the twins I'm not sure if he was arrested that's why he wasn't here yesterday I I'm not sure I I don't know he's not talking to me I don't know it must be something going on back there so he he's denying that he was ared I hope by Fall camp that we're going to have the microphones back here so we can hear him talk that's my hope for this upcoming fall season but uh it's good to have Eric back producing today Welcome to our show uh we got a pack one today Missouri Valley Conference media day is today I will hammer it until they change it uh but it's lame it's cool we get to hear from everybody but it's lame you yesterday the Big Sky had all of its coaches for two days out in Spokane Washington Valley used to do this first year that North Dakota state was in the Missouri Valley Football Conference then the Gateway I think they rebranded the valley when we got there um me day was in St Louis which was great we went we went for two straight years 2008 2009 wdy was there yeah that was fantastic fantastic I hope that we can get back to that because the zoom thing while maybe convenient and easy for the League's media does not necessarily get me fired up for the top football conference in the country that being said we will hear from the commissioner of the Missouri Valley Football Conference Patty verito will speak at about 9:30 this morning Tim POC will have his first media day function is the head football coach of the Bison he goes about 10 minutes after that depending on how many questions uh Patty gets and then uh four other coaches are going to go today Bubba schweer will speak tomorrow Jimmy Rogers will speak tomorrow which we'll hear from both of them during tomorrow's show the preseason poll was released yesterday in the All Conference team which we'll get to in just a few minutes uh no surprise on the top but I do have a to pick with one of my brethren and you'll see why if you saw it yesterday you want to talk about a joke um the poll was treated as such by somebody this year and I'm not sure who um but uh and maybe that's not important but when I receive it it's a it's I treat that with a lot of respect I mean people somewhat I don't know why they value my opinion they think I know what I'm talking about that's why I got a ballot and the person that decided to have fun with theirs didn't which we'll get to in a few minutes uh this morning the Vikings are back at Camp quacy DOA Kevin oconnell spoke yesterday uh obviously discussed the tragic passing of of Kyrie Jackson also of the arrest of Jordan Addison and the main topic which is going to be just talked to death over the next six weeks is the quarterback situation between Sam darnold and JJ McCarthy we're going of course uh rip the Band-Aid off of that coming up later on in the show but uh we'll begin with the twins who after licking their wounds what the Brewers did then they welcome in the best team in baseball last night the Phillies are in town and Philadelphia is just a machine this season and they have buzzsaw through everybody and the twins after playing I'd say two sloppy games on Saturday and Sunday didn't seem like they were in the best form they're without kareah without Royce Lewis Without Jose Miranda they're not a A1 lineup right now and that's why baseball is so great because the twins be lineup took to the Phillies last night the game was delayed about 90 minutes because of rain and Bryce Harper decided rain delay didn't bug him because he crushes this Bailey over pitch this is Harper's first game at Target Field and that was his first at bat was an absolute laser beam 424 feet to give Philadelphia a two nothing lead that was it for the Philly offense last night the twins got on the board this Willie Castro RBI single to make it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third inning Ranger Suarez the starter who was an All-Star for Philadelphia one of the 21 Allstars they had this year same score in the fifth Manny Margo is starting to hit the ball goes the opposite way here that scores both Max Kepler and Diego Castillo to make it a 3-2 twins lead in the bottom of the fifth this might be the highlight play of the night with Carlos Santana who was hitting 093 remember that the first month he's not doing that anymore blast that one off the wall and early slide into second but he made it there with an RBI double to score Ryan Jeffers that made it four to2 twins in the seventh they busted the game open in the eighth Kepler bleeds one through to Center that would score Austin Martin that made it 5-2 after Willie Castro walk with the bases loaded this one gets away to score julienne to make it 7-2 Matt strm did not Pitch last night the uh Rob Thompson the Philly manager decided to put in his other Bullpen guys Cole sanss worked the last two innings this the final out of the game with a fly out to Kepler and Ryan the twins with one of their more impressive wins of the season this is finally a win over a team that is good we've hammered this this season 7 to2 the final score left last night Bailey over not pictured was Sensational seven Innings four hits the two runs were given up on the Harper home run after that nothing four strikeouts sanss work the last two innings to get the twins a seven to2 win to take the first game of this three-game set and more importantly for Minnesota they finally beat a team a first place team they had not beaten the Orioles this season they obviously didn't beat the Yankees this year they got the Brewers took it to them uh this past weekend they were okay with the Astros the Guardians they've struggled with now they beat the Phillies they got whoop by the Dodgers so that's a good start good win there to open up this three- game set and in the process the Guardians have lost again Cleveland has lost three straight so the Twins and the Royals by the way look out Kansas City is red hot they've won four straight each gain a game on Cleveland so as we sit here on the 23rd of July yeah I know the Vikings are back but don't uh I know twins fans has been impossible to follow your baseball team this season because they're not on TV they are just four games out of first place with the trade deadline a week from today James Paxton the Lefty was put on waivers by the Dodgers yesterday I'd keep your eye on that guy cuz now they can go get him for whatever uh the twins still need some pitching help that might be the guy that they want to go get wild card standings as we mention we're going to keep our eyes on this throughout the remainder of the of the season the Yankees Twins and Royals hold those spots the Red Sox are two games back of Minnesota and Kansas City see the twins are a game up in the L column on Kansas City I would say probably the cut off the way teams are playing right now is probably Detroit the World Series champion Rangers are probably out of it right now but that's what baseball wanted when they expanded the postseason Toronto with a massive disappointment season the Angels might get Mike Trout back you see Oakland and the white socks are waiting for uh waiting for the fall to come so that's the race there as it stands now as we mentioned on Friday Show twins would play the Yankees in the opening round of the postseason which I know they're thrilled that twins fans be thrilled about that proposition you don't see them all year and then you got to play the Yankees uh to see him on television good win last night game two comes up uh back tonight at Target Field they play a day game uh tomorrow to wrap up the three game set it'll be Zack wheeler why can't the Mets find players like him and Simeon Woods Richardson will get the start for Minnesota who's been really good three and one C of 3.51 Wheeler has been tremendous which just is you shake your head at that that guy was uh came to the Mets via trade and he was okay and then the Mets let him go and he's become an All-Star in Philadelphia of course that happens um I mentioned off the top the Missouri Valley Football Conference released its preseason poll yesterday there are 44 people that get a ballot I was fortunate I have for the last I don't know 13 14 years that I've had uh a ballot for the official poll and we put it on the show on Friday everybody saw what I had I've always been transparent with that I think if you're gonna if you're going to do this you got to tell people where you're at I got Rak over the coals from my Summit League ballot that um I did and I I'm fine with that that's who I voted for you want to disagree with it fine um but I'm not going to not tell people who I voted for I think it's important but somebody decided to have I don't know if it's fun or they legitimately believe it whatever the reason yesterday South Dakota State received 42 of the 44 first place votes which makes a ton of sense they are the two-time reigning national champs the two-time defending champs of the league they should North Dakota State received one first place vote and okay I can see that I can see if you want to pick the buison one they've got a ton of returners and somebody decided to give Missouri State a first place vote and yet they still came in nin in the preseason poll that tells you of the 43 other ballots that the voters had the Bears ninth or worse in their preseason ballot what are we doing whoever he or she is needs to have ballots stripped right away my guy Wyatt wheeler came out who we've had on the show said it's not him he would never do that treats his ballot pretty uh professionally and did not vote Missouri State W now this is not all journalists not all media members the coaches are involved in this I do not believe there was any coach that did it and sports information directors and if that's the case then we've got to have a serious conversation there the conference is voted on by Coaches Sports information directors and a media panel I'm I don't know that Missouri state will not be good this season I'm just gonna say that right now if they win more than five games I'd be surprised so whoever decided to be have fun with their ballot and give them a first place vote because they're leaving um shame on them that's that's not that's just not what we do you can see here this is the official ballot the jack rabbits one the Bison two South Dakota at three which is exactly what I had in my ballot those are the three teams that all return their starting quarterbacks that goes without saying I think there uh Southern Illinois comes in at four Saluki of course lost in the uh second round of the FCS uh playoffs last year to Idaho North Dakota at five is surprising UND lost a lot UND has a new starting quarterback and lost four offensive linemen UND opens with Iowa State and Montana before they even get to a valley game that was surprising Illinois State at six I had the Red Birds higher I think Illinois State's got uh everything set up they can be pretty good this year they do play the Bison but they do not play the jack rabbits this year Youngstown stayed at seven they lost a ton Youngstown was a playoff team you remember a year ago also looking for a new quarterback all those teams four five six seven all of them need new starters Northern Iowa at eight I had the Panthers at seven I believe in my poll then Missouri State followed by Indiana State and Murray actually I think Murray might be half decent this year I I know they changed over 40 some odd guys but uh I think they'll finish ninth I predicted that with Missouri State 10 and the state 11 so that is the preseason uh poll last year the valley got six teams into the FCS playoffs remember we chatted about that as the season uh kept going on that that UND Illinois State game was a win and in it turned out it was that UND won it and got in as the six team joining Youngstown and Southern along with South Dakota NDSU and SDSU question our poll question today and this is the best one to ask ask on the 23rd of July how many playoff teams this year does the Missouri Valley Football Conference have is it three four five or six you can vote at hot Mike wda Y and we'll have our poll results before uh we say goodbye this morning but with the change over in the portal the amount of players that moved on that could be awfully interesting they they had three just a couple years ago uh and obviously they hit their high water mark of six again last year I think it's right in the sweet spot I I'll tip my hand I think it's four the buis it of the jack rabbits will make it I believe South Dakota will but again I'm not totally on board with what the coyotes uh have this year they lost a lot too and then I think Illinois State makes it I think the red ver uh they have they got to figure out quarterback but they bring their All Conference running back back they have two tremendous linebackers back have a really good offensive line back uh we didn't see Illinois State last season uh they'll be back on the schedule because with Western Illinois dropping off the Bison were not scheduled to play Illinois State this year and then with Western leaving they reconfigured the schedule and all of a sudden the bison are going to normal at the end of sep setember which uh will be a difficult game that Illinois State uh is always tough bisen last we're there in 2021 and uh that was not the prettiest of games that was Quincy Patterson's pretty much last uh harah as the Bison starting quarterback I thought how long ago that was was the fall of 21 uh we'll get the All Conference team in uh later on in our next segment here because we got to set up our show because we got a lot to get to because the Valley's not waiting for us uh coming up at 9:30 Patty viito will speak commissioner of the Missouri Valley Football Conference we will Air as much of that as we can we're going to break early so we can get into that uh as early as possible ollc is scheduled to speak at 9:40 you will hear all or most of his comments as well the head football coach first time addressing the league media coming up at 9:40 Mike mcy normally joins us at 9:30 he was gracious enough to move to 10:00 this morning uh we'll get Mike's thoughts on what he hears from both the kamish and POC as we are on the doorstep of the football season Big 10 media days are happening today as well the first of three days in Indianapolis with the 18 team Big 10 conference PJ Fleck and the Gophers go uh later this week we'll uh we'll check in on that as well as the show rolls on this morning so lot to get to on this Tuesday Morning glad you're joining us hot Mike just getting started we're back after this on wda y extra KFL TV and inform forum.com back here on this Tuesday Morning Valley media day going to start here in a few minutes we'll get to the USA basketball team struggling again in a uh pre-olympic game against Germany later in the show they needed LeBron James to save him for the second game in a row the US opens up play at the Olympics on Sunday in Paris they played their final game yesterday the women will play an exhibition game today uh as well before they get to Paris and begin their Olympic tournament the actual Olympic games begin tomorrow this time tomorrow there will be Olympic competition from Paris the US men's soccer team plays uh tomorrow which uh then we goes with the opening ceremony slated for Friday um I wanted to get to this quick because we'll break a little early to get uh ready for the start of Valley media day the All Conference teams were announced yesterday as well uh I wanted to look at the first team the Bison had seven selections there they and South Dakota State led the way no surprise uh on that Illinois state had uh 13 picks as well among all the conference teams just to give you a heads up that people think the red birds are going to be uh be to be heard from this year so on the valley first team offense no surprise that Mark granowski was the quarterback from South Dakota State I know some perhaps thought that cam Miller would have got the nod there um that would have been surprising to me so it is granowski at quarterback Mason King is the former Mason Blakemore uh of Illinois State who was an allconference player last year uh with taan King from Youngstown State the Bison do not see the the Penguins this season in the rotation uh they and Indiana State are not on the buis and schedule this year uh he's a dynamite player Hunter brosio who is a first team fullback selection last season is back again the wide receivers we hem and haot over I think uh Eric I don't know did you put Carter Bell first team I did not Carter Bell's first team from South Dakota we had B belquist from UND and Dan sakowitz from Illinois state wide receiver is a change over spot there are some guys there belquist being the only one that we know um JJ G breth from South Dakota was the first team tight end offensive line no surprise there that you see the list of guys gray zel Jared Penning Gus Miller from South Dakota State Hunter Z brono from Illinois state was one of the guys I was talking about and Jason Williams from Youngstown State those guys were all first teamers last year um on the All Conference Team defensively the Bison well represented of the defensive line with two guys there Dylan Hendricks who was a first team pick last year I think people forget Hendrick's second half of last year was fantastic he tore it up on the second half of last season he's on there with Eli mostart Nick gay from South Dakota who had a really good season uh up front remember Brendan Webb is gone Gaye is going to be the guy up up front for the coyotes and Jared the priest from South Dakota state that's the defensive line the linebackers was tough not Abdullah because I thought he was uh locked in I had Tai namp from Illinois State also as my first team linebacker uh Adam Bach clearly is there from South Dakota State Logan cop who was the first team selection last year I think people forget how good cop was as well for the bison Garrett olig from Indiana state is a first team pick remember the Bison do not see them this year Dallas beam from South Dakota State Maddox Blackwell Tucker large who was great last year for the Jacks Dennis shorter from South Dakota and Cole wisneski who was the leader in interceptions in 2023 in the country with eight the Specialists real quick we'll do this before we go to break Hunter brosio The Long Snapper so brosio give him a shout out there he's a first team selection at Long Snapper and fullback love that guy will Leland is the kicker from South Dakota I had uh Hunter dman there no I had kroo excuse me Griffin Koso was picked second team from North Dakota State Grant Burkett from Missouri State Carter Bell from South Dakota and Omar Johnson from South Dakota state was the all-purpose player so that was the first team we'll get into the second team in a minute we're going to break now the commissioner is waiting she's going to speak here about about 3 minutes we come back you'll hear comments from Missouri Valley football commissioner Patty Vito as Missouri Valley media day gets ready to get going we're back on hot Mike right after this welcome back everybody hot mic off and rolling Missouri Valley Conference media day is underway conference commissioner Patty viverito is doing her opening address we're going to pick up that right now and get her questions from the media um for the first time in our leagues of again Mike mentioned our 40-year history um we're going to have two regular season Missouri Valley Football Conference home games um selected for National linear distribution so uh this fall features the two-time defending uh national champ South Dakota state in back-to-back weeks uh in October and North Dakota State and South Dakota will also be featured once um a lot of convers about the national landscape um first the good news nobody's suing us nobody's suing the Missouri Valley Football Conference and uh but there's there's a lot of scariness out there and we could spend a bunch of time um thinking about the parade of horribles that might exist um in the coming years as as the landscape changes there's obviously a lot of Fallout from the house settlement that you're all familiar with it's going to present some Financial hardships um with the legal penalties uh the nli landscape Contin to be confusing um we can expect a new NCA governance structure that's going to give much more Independence to the autonomy 4 conferences um that we've got legal challenges about about student athletes becoming employees that could present a huge challenge uh when it comes to roster management we're still dealing with the uncertainties of roster limits and the transfer portal and then last but not least we've got conference realignment which absolutely is not over um at any level both FCS and FBS um you're all well aware that Missouri state has announced that it is it is leaving um the Missouri Valley Football conference after this season to Conference USA um that'll take us back to 10 teams which is actually a pretty good number it gives us a a schedule that approaches a full round robin again just one game shy of that so we consider that a positive the more Missouri Valley Football Conference rivalries that we can create through a full schedule as good thing um rather than speculate about all the um horrible things that could be going wrong in college sports um especially at the PO power power four level I'd certainly rather focus on what's right um at the FCS level um again there's there's a lot of anticipated changes but I I think there is and always will be a very good home at at uh within the NCAA for football at our level and um you know I think a lot of good things have happened over the last year to to Really um bring that message home um first uh those of you that don't pay a lot of attention to NCA governance issues um this was the first year that we had an FCS oversight committee where all of our FCS conferences were represented fully represented which gives us much more focus and opportunity to to create uh rules that make sense for our subdivision we work very cooperatively with the FBS oversight committee and we meet jointly with that group on a regular basis to make sure that we you know the right hand knows what the left hand is doing and that we continue to work cooperatively but it really does give us an opportunity to to chart our own destiny in a real positive way and I guess the best evidence of that is what happened with the decision about seeding 16 teams that was a hugely successful collaborative effort that involved the FCS oversight committee the FCS selection committee the FCS Commissioners and and the NCA staff everybody really rallied around and and got that um 16 seed decision passed through the governance structure um we are the only men's sport that uh had its uh seating uh and bracket uh expanded in a positive way this coming year so again a a real I would even call it an upset victory that we got that done um there's going to be new metrics adopted by the committee for uh that's going to I think lead to much more objective and better um decisions about at large selections and seating um we expect that those metrics will be both performance-based and predictive um in nature but we don't know exactly what those metrics are going to be I think the committee makes that decision this coming month um you're probably all aware that the NCA also signed a new ESPN agreement for sports other than men's basketball and women's basketball no I take that back just men's basketball and uh part of that uh negotiation uh lands our championship game on Monday night uh in early January which means that we will not have any competition from the NFL or from the cfp will have clear air for FCS Monday Night Football which is I think a real positive development um Frisco continues to be a huge success um our fans are there and love it and um and again I expect that will be the home for that championship game for some years to come and I'll close on on on a final note um this is the 40th year that I've been commissioner it's Al also the last year that I will be the Missouri Valley football commissioner I don't think that's a a well-kept secret um I plan to fully retire after this season and I'm I'm awfully um I'm very much looking forward to my my last official visits to each of the campuses and I'll stop there and and happy to take any questions thank you Patty and again me if you do have a question for the commissioner please use your reactions button or raise your hand and we'll take uh take your questions uh as we get to him and we'll start off with Kelly Burke hi Kelly hi hi Mike hi Patty uh Patty congrats on 40 years congrats on your granddaughter too by the way um yeah she's coming to visit oh nice so I'm at the Jersey I'm at the Jersey Shore right now uh little family vacation before we gear up for the football season and my six-month-old granddaughter will be coming in two days exciting so so fun I was curious just being that it is your your last year as commissioner before you retire what are your biggest priorities over these next 12 months I I think that um managing uh the national landscape is obviously going to be top of mind for all of us um the one area where I think will have to make some decisions um in the near term and it isn't going to be some speculative you know two or three years down the road is roster management and we're going to have some decisions to make about how we manage that within FCS and I I say that cautiously because we have to do it in a way that's independent as conferences uh I don't think they're going to be NCAA rules because that's that gets us into trouble with antitrust um but I I I would expect that we're going to have some interesting and perhaps tough decisions to make about scholarship numbers and roster limits yeah U my my last question is just you know obviously the the house versus NCAA settlement is forthcoming but from the people that you are well connected with and talk to how do you how do you see that settlement impacting Valley Football so um sort of first the good news the good news is that um it doesn't impact us directly and anyway because we don't get our revenue from NCAA distributions not directly and so it really didn't impact like our budget planning for next year um however it is going to impact multiport leagues and institutions and how they manage things um so I can't speak for how institutions are going to manage um how they find that money to pay that you know debt over the next 10 years uh it is significant um but I haven't got any indications that um it's going to result in any um direct negative impact on our football programs well thank you thanks Kelly we'll go next to Dom ISO hey Dom Patty congrats uh just what's the timeline now for what happens next the president will select the the next commissioner can you elaborate on what the next step in the process will be in the timeline sure um we've actually been working on it for um well since I announced my three-year uh contract agreement two years ago so it's um we we still have plenty of time to figure this out um they're being very thoughtful very thorough um there's a committee that's uh comprised of presidents and athletic directors um its title is the Strategic V vision and planning subcommittee and um we've already talked about you know some non-negotiables about what we want to make sure happens moving forward um I think it's safe to say that the group is is pretty set on maintaining a a single sport League where we are all equal members within that structure um how it operates is really what's Up For Debate discussion and uh decision making I expect the presidents to make some preliminary decisions this fall and then get down to Personnel decisions uh winter spring in regards I always ask you about expansion does that table that until a new commissioner is named yes and I I think that um when you look at the landscape um I think the opportunities in the short term for FCS realignment are pretty minimal um and I think that we are committed to being um the best strongest FCS conference in the midwest I don't think we want to get too far a field from um our time zone and so I I I think that we'll be thoughtful and we'll be diligent um but um I'm going to borrow a Greg sanki line we're not 10 today but we're 10 tomorrow and we we'll be 10 for the foreseeable future about that with Missouri State departing does that force your hand do you like the number 10 would you would the presidents like to get to back to 12 like you were last year um I'll speak personally here and and risk um speaking on behalf of others that may disagree um but I thought 10 was the perfect number for a whole lot of years um the only reason we expanded Beyond 10 was to accommodate our multiport leagues needs um to accommodate their membership and so we we grew Beyond really you know beyond nine to to to get to the point where we got to 12 um because outside forces really dictated that it was the right thing to do not because we were enamored with the number 12 thanks Patty thanks Tom we'll go next to Jeff gopek Jeff yeah I'll Echo congratulations Patty um so was 40 just the right number or did the upheaval in college athletics contribute to this decision I'm sorry what number 40 was that just enough you know in in retiring oh 40 years yeah getting old that's what you dictated it and I have granddaughter so I have different priorities yeah it's time it's time um it's sort of like a Biden decision I decided it was time to step aside um if the power four and when the power four breaks away what's going to happen to the valley you think um I guess it depends on what happens to the NCAA uh you know I would be hard pressed to speculate what that would look like but I think what the power four have signaled with this house settlement is that they're committed to the NCAA for the next 10 years and so assuming the settlement doesn't blow up I don't think we're looking at um migration out of the NCAA by the power for in the near term or at least for the next 10 years so um that'll be sort of a a Kick the Can down the road conversation okay thank you and Patty your last question comes from Aaron Walling Aaron all all right so we're going to I'm the sports director at KBR and uh we'll take a break we come back Tim pok's going to speak we're going to pick that up we come back live coverage Missouri Valley media day here on hot Mike we're back on wdy extra right after this you know the teams that have achieved their full Su uh potential in the past and I'm very pleased with that you know quite frankly it's a it's a special thanks to our training department um our strength and conditioning coaches Jim Kramer and Ryan napley for doing a outstanding job in preparing those guys but most importantly our our players have shown up and and they've been competitive you know they've been Improvement driven and and they've been tough um through all three segments of our program so far all right and Coach a final question I have for you is is that you know you've had a busy summer with camps you with players and and everything and also getting acclimated again in Fargo you know what's the biggest thing you've learned so far from from your prog program as you go into your first year Well hiring people um in July is a little bit tough you know we've hired an operations guy here late um we've hired a recruiting guy a little bit later than I would like um just learning you know firsttime head coach um there are certain times of the year that it's easier to go through the full process and to navigate interviews and to visit with people to make best hires possible but I'm very pleased with how our staff has come together um there's a good mix of of you know NDSU tradition and experience and knowledge with um some Talent New Perspective and Youthful energy um I think we've attacked the recruiting process as good as we we can right now I look forward to looking at the areas that we can improve in um June was challenging but it was exciting and it was uh it was productive for us you know where we stand in in in our minds in a you know acquisition of talent right now we feel really strong about that and I look forward to building the relationship stronger with those families and the kids that we do have verbally committed in this class um I think you know I'd be remiss if I didn't say a special thanks to our Administration um in this early term of you know my career as a head coach but um Dr Cook Matt Larson Todd Phelps um Ryan pral um you know Derek Lang and Colleen Hemstead with with uh compliance they've all been there to answer questions um and to find answers rather than saying hey we can't do this um and so I'm real appreciative of them and then you know I think our local media here you know does a good job of uh getting some things out and I know NDSU is always looking to improve um ways to connect with our with our fan base all right thanks coach thank you coach our next question comes from Kelly Burke Kelly hey coach uh long time no talk yeah how you doing good how are you I'm great how how much of a a difference will having 27 seniors be in in your first season back now as head coach yeah I think you know that's an interesting question coming off of a Personnel meeting yesterday you know in in the thing it it brought me back to right like some of this stuff is my third time back here to Fargo into North Dakota State you know we have to be conscious of leveraging uh a veteran group but we have to be smart with them they've played a lot of football they've practiced a lot there's a lot of repetitions under their belt and we've got to not only sharpen them and sharpen the sword but we have to be very aware um where they're at from a repetition standpoint um I think everybody in our program including myself can improve daily uh we're going to try to go one and 0 we're going to try to uh bring back some of the the clima isms you know we're going to embrace the process learn to love it again and we want to have fun um when we're on this journey the journey is as simple as this you know can we reach our full potential as a football team this year um I think there's a lot of programs in this conference that when they do reach their full potential you know they have a shot to make a run at something pretty cool and we're going to stay really levelheaded um at the Forefront will be our core values and our standards and then just taking advantage of each and every opportunity starting with um Sunday and Reporting on the 28th and practicing on the 29th what what are your biggest question marks in filling the three starting spots on your offensive line well I I just think to see how the camaraderie um how communication the cohesiveness all shakes out and then quite frankly I I think one thing that I learned about coaching the o line at Iowa is often times we would grade out individually at a high rate but if they all decide to take turns of making a mistake from play to play it just doesn't go very good so cohesiveness and consistency um in applying and you know being actionable to what our standard is up front um is going to be imperative and and we have some time but that time is starting to shrink and so some guys have separated I think this summer and they positioned themselves in a better position um to be in the top seven and then to find out okay who are going to be the rotational guys outside and inside where's our depth going to come from I do like the depth um we may be a little bit young or inexperienced but no one cares the world don't care and we got to go out and perform there's some there's some guys that we're excited to coach that's the bottom line and I think they're hardworking and uh we will get we'll get better day by day finally you know last year cam Miller and Cole Peyton they led the team in rushing touch down so what kind of balance do you envision having between the quarterback run game and your actual actual running back room and the way you guys utilize fullbacks yeah I think that that's another um that's spot on that's been a directive that I've had um for our staff is you know I would like for us in a year or two here to have a running back back on a poster of our schedule you know we want to have a guy that we can highlight we want a very strong group with the running back group um I don't think uh the past offensive staff did a poor job at all it just the way it shook out is K Cole Payton and cam are very capable Runners and sometimes that's the best way to to create Leverage um to create opportunities as far as numbers go in the Run game and angles um maybe lighter boxes and so we'll we'll continue to look at every aspect of not only who's carrying the ball but how do we run the ball most efficiently and and try to generate some explosive plays thank you coach you got it coach your next question comes from Victor Halton Victor hi coach how are you good how you doing sir good I'm with college football dog and I just had a question if you would comment on replacing Matt an who's headed out to Southern Cal yeah I mean unbelievable guy hardworking guy terrific football coach I I've been looking and I've been searching you know okay where are we off I'm not sure um that we're off at all you know we've just got to make a few more plays in critical moments we got to be a little cleaner in big games and in big moments we've got to eliminate some B football at times but you know Matt won a hell of a lot of games the last three years including a national title you know obviously we came up short one time and then you know lost in a semifinal on a two-point play and know but you know just want to mention you know congratulations to South Dakota State getting done again last year um uh Matt an is a really good coach left this program in really good hands uh there's some really good players at the top of our roster with the 27 seniors and um I appreciate Matt's open uh willingness to communicate with me on on certain topics and and giving me answers and I look forward to staying connected with him especially with Kellen n still being on the football team thank you coach your final question comes from Zack Bor good morning Zach good morning coach Zack Bor with Dakota news now and sou Falls uh been away about I know you've been away about 8 years now from uh the Missouri Valley but in returning what you've seen so far what's changed with within the other programs that you've seen what's different and what looks similar what what's the what are some of the newer challenges that you see as you come back into the league I think one of the things we've talked a lot about you know is is um community and team and being a bison is pretty cool right but we got to have a chip on our shoulder you know I still remember a time I think it was Jeff copek asked me you know or asked Coach B at the time you know how are you guys going to how are you going to catch Northern Iowa you know man that's a good-look football team and you know as time has gone on you know NDSU has had a lot of success we want to continue to have our success but I guess I have a great deal of appreciation uh for the programs and the institutions and how much improvement they've made um man is this league tough I'm I'm sitting here looking at the standings and the the finals uh final standings from last year and I just it's good football with good coaches really tough uh physical football players and in this conference uh specifically upfront you know when you talk about the front the tight ends and the o line um and you talk about the defensive lines and the linebackers that we see very not comparable I would say in a lot lot of cases much better than most mid- major football conferences out there and it's an honor to be the head coach at North Dakota State and to be part of this conference that has continued to improve so many teams in our league have made you know some decisions have made some facility adjustments to to be better and I have a great appreciation and respect level for that um at the same time um I really appreciate what we've done here at North Dakota state to keep us very competitive we understand the standards here and look forward to trying to achieve our goals this year thank you and that's Tim poic's final comments there we'll break we come back Mike mcf in studio we'll listen to uh little playback of that get some thoughts from Mike hour two of hot Mike back after this this is hot Mike hot Mike on the networks of wda wda here's Dom ISO oh it's Mr [Music] mcing I have seen the future and he was wearing number five and I ain't talking about Robbie Grimley folks took out the muffins took out the trail mix took out the cookies they stole the monster cookies wow that's awesome that is so awesome let's do some broadcasting that is my favorite intro I don't say that cuz you're here it gets me all fired up good to see you you can say it just cuz I'm here that's fine I'll take whatever praise I can get I so it's uh we just sat in and listened to the head football coach at North Dakota State addressed the media for the first time any morels out of that any nuggets you took out of that um uh well the offensive line question interesting the way he answered it was that there's been some separation this summer on the offensive line and then he followed that up by saying we might be inexperienced or young but nobody's going to care right and so which he's right about that I mean uh but the T leaves on that Michael but the but the tea leaves and you and I have talked about this ad nauseum because we literally have no lives um but we do it's FCS football that's true yeah yep can't wait for that kickoff FCS kickoff between who is it south north Alabama north Alabama and SEO I think no is it I think so I thought Charlton is it SEO okay so whatever doesn't matter but anyway I can't wait com it's gonna be awesome so glad that NDSU is still in FCS um the tea leaves when he said that it is Simo yeah the tea leaves when he said that Tim palek is that there's three young guys um Jack Lewinsky GFF Griffin EMP and the third one is Bo Johnson Bo Johnson Spring Lake Park Minnesota I don't know this I I have not literally talked to Tim poix since the spring game um but the way that he said it it seems to me like maybe those three guys that's total speculation on my part uh that those three guys maybe are are in the mix to perhaps be on the starting offensive line they are all red shirt freshman they all red shirt last year so that would lead to that I can tell you from covering that recruiting process Mike two of those three Johnson and um Lewinsky were highly sought after Griffin empy was has developed in all I've heard of big things about it so that very I I don't know I'll be really intrigued we first practice is on Monday I'll be awfully interested to see how they line up when they go out there for the first uh for the first team reps um the other interesting thing he said that I he said June was very challenging and that I don't know what that meant they that's when they signed or or got didn't sign got commitments from the vast majority of their signing class but I don't know if if they didn't get what they wanted or speaking to him about that I tell for how the calendar is set up he he's not a fan of that just of the amount of they have their camps going on and on top of that they recruiting as well that's what I believe he's talked to me about when I've chatted with him and I just chatted with him yesterday on uh on that so I but also his main Zack Peters who was leading the recruiting CH got a new job went to Northwest David Brun Ian Dino who was also in that position before Zack Peters was so they'd had to rehire that position and they did it just in July and I believe they they hired as he mentioned a director of football operations as well because Nate bual who was doing that has moved into a higher position at the Sha so they had to hire that so that may have added into the the groans of of what he's talking about there so he's had a few things on his plate he taking over taking over for mad and I you know I just casually asked him about Colorado why am I watching I don't even know who's going to be out there with the amount you know of Colorado film from last year while like while the quarterback's still the same you're definitely going to want to you know yeah but it's those are the couple of things that that stood out to me and the fact that he praised South Dakota State I know and I I took a step back on that what is this like when the NHL draft they we'd like to congratulate the Stanley Cup champ like what what really it's but well I mean that's they the Jacks are the two time defending champs are the favorites correct again this year as as they should be correct so it's he also praised the local media that one almost made me faint yes how about that one yeah that's right yeah I took that I took that as me yeah I took that as being he praising me just didn't want to point me out by name uh did you have a problem with the fact that one of uh our brethren of the 44 votes gave Missouri State a first place vote does that bug you no I don't care about the preseason polls but does but what are you doing yeah I I don't know yeah yes but but do when it comes to FCS football and the media landscape as as fractured as it is I mean most of the schools really don't even have a beat writer anymore do they because I think some of the ones in our league don't anymore yeah I mean you know our guy from Southern Illinois Todd heerman yep is he's been gone for a couple years been gone for a couple years Indiana state looks like gold had left um and so you know uh I you know so I Northern Iowa has a guy but it's not the same guy and it's reinhardt's been there for a bit with Illinois State uh most state is job and actually there there's another no people don't care but there's another media Outlet opened in Springfield and um my guy Ryan Collingwood who used to cover Eastern Washington very well is is covering Missouri State uh for that but anyway it I mean there nothing is surprising when it comes to Media polls or homerism or whatever and and I'll say the same thing there there's just no the way FCS Works people really don't pay much attention to schools outside their Silo oh there's no doubt about that they just don't there's even when you get to the G5 when you get to the Mountain West for example there's much more of a everybody's more aware of everybody else in the conference and FCS is just I mean it just they just don't know anything about anybody else from my experience correct except for us we know everything about everybody I'd like to think so Patty Vito announced that she is gonna be done which is the worst kept secret I think yeah I mean we've all we've all talked about this I've written about it um I speculated that perhaps Josh Fenton you and I are both on that would be the next person in line and perhaps it would be Summit League football although she she said it would be try to keep that sport uh it's going to be a a one sport single sport specific conference but that doesn't mean that Josh Fenton couldn't be correct co-commissioner between the summit league and the she also said interestingly that she's fine with 10 teams yes and I asked her that God bless you Patty for that I and she said the reason we expanded was we didn't need to but we tried to take care of our other IE UND and Murray State that they they were Summit league for UND Missi Valley M State and so they want to kind of let those schools combine all their you could knock me over with a feather if they stay at 10 by 20 this time 2025 but the interesting thing she said and another that's she said right that she preferred that right yeah um and I have speculated again in my column that using talking to sources that perhaps the Utah schools right if and when the whack falls apart then the Utah schools will be available to do the summit League expansion andley then have the Mo Valley you know have them come in as football teams but she said we would prefer to stay with our Midwest footprint and that Utah is not the Midwest nope it's Northern Colorado no no that's that's they're not that's not happening you were all over that and I was a little bit for the valley um but it's you were you were way more into that than I was although I suggest but that's from the people I've talked with in the leagues they've said the Northern Colorado thing is just not they're not interested they stay at 10 that would that would be great for nine would be better Nine would be better because then you have eight League games correct and then everybody plays each other and you're not getting a season off of playing a good team or a bad team correct that would be yes they're not going that way though unless you you're not because they have to also I mean she also said Patty did that alignment is not done at any level correct and so there's still as as ready to get out as much as you and I have been riding this NDSU to FBS I mean they have to plan for the possibility that that might happen you can't get caught flat footed in modern College athletics and say oh we're fine you know nobody's going you know NDSU and SDSU aren't going to leave because they're too far north P 12 right right they're too far north right so but if they do then you're down to eight teams and you're you're out of luck I would say she was the spearhead I remember visiting with her in 2007 about getting the Dakota schools in she was the biggest cheerleader because Southern Illinois didn't want them Indiana State didn't want young Youngtown didn't want them uh she pounded her fist on the table to add South Dakota State and North Dakota state was the best thing that League ever did by by Leaps and Bounds those other schools you just mentioned might argue that you know since they have rarely defeated ndu and NSU went on a historic college football run from 2011 to 2021 and the Jacks Are and the Jacks Are are the best team now on the land in FCS and so but in terms of success and eyeballs TV eyeballs notoriety for those notoriety doubt I mean you can you know the the people who hate NSU are not going to like me saying this but it's a fact is that Frisco became fris because of NDSU correct that's what made Frisco a destination I mean Frisco was already there they'd signed the contracts but if it if NDSU hadn't gone there with you know 20,000 or whatever 15,000 fans from 2011 to 2015 Frisco would not be the destination it is for FCS football right now sorry no just a fact fact let's break we come back we'll talk a couple their college football things we got to get Mike out of here a little bit early so uh we'll do that back after this as we roll on on a Tuesday Morning hot mic Edition media day style back after [Music] this welcome back everybody hot Mike rolls on on on this Tuesday Morning email comes into the inbox here Dom why is this event a zoom meeting I remember when it used to be a thing well part of it is because of what we said earlier is that there just I me there's really no there's really no a lot of markets don't have media I mean it's just and that's the modern landscape of nothing against the schools involved nothing against the conference but I mean if you have a if you have an in-person event and two people show up that's that's a little more embarrassing than a zoom right you know that Fargo would go Sue Falls would go uh I'm struggling after that yeah I mean so it's that's that's why I mean do you think that like the I don't even know that I apologize I don't know the name of the Murray Kentucky newspaper they're not going to fly's not going right Youngstown doesn't have a newspaper anymore right terra's not going to go that's the that's the comeback on that's the that's why uh here you go right up your alley the Big 10 is having its media days uh as well started today announces its football championship game will remain at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis through the 20128 season there was some talk that Minneapolis may get it because it's more in the CC and US Bank is fantastic yeah but uh apparently not till after 2028 staying in Indianapolis which I'm assuming you know Ohio state Wisconsin and Michigan like that yep it which is fine whatever I mean again we're going to see the same teams playing in it without divisions anymore Minneapolis in January well we did the Super Bowl in February right it never go back right nope and so it's I don't whatever I mean Indianapolis is more uh moderate than Minneapolis and that's it's and it's still centrally located still in the midwest airplanes fly from from Eugene Oregon to Indianapolis as easily as they fly to Minneapolis 18 Team league and still just trying to wrap my mind around that when I saw the yeah and this and this is you know we've talked the last several years about how the Gophers needed to make some hay when they had the west division and what they were picked like 14th or something 12th I saw yeah you know that's and that's where they're going to be that's where they're going to be again it's not a knock on PJ Fleck it's not a knock on the on Minnesota it just but that's just what Minnesota is going be put ahead of right you're not going to put any of those teams I wouldn't you're not going to put them ahead of USC ever you're not going to put put ahead of Ohio State ever ever you know in a in a good year maybe put him ahead of Iowa but Wisconsin is going to be a tough one to overcome pen State Nebraska Nebraska is getting better y uh Oregon USC Washington Washington that you're not putting them ahead of those schools ever Penn State probably never right yeah yeah and again that's all about resources and and availability of talent access to success they are behind ruter and Maryland the other two new schol that's interesting to me y CU I think they but here's the thing they're going with an FCS guy brosmer is going to be their quarterback kid from New Hampshire is likely going to be the starter for Minnesota this year uh one other comment from Tim palc that he made uh during our uh aired part of the press conference was that he'd like to see a running back back on a poster yes that was that one stood out to me as well which which you and I have talked about this and I've mulled this over and I even go back to the last couple of spring games where you and I were at the at the new facility or at the fargood home and we're going there's like 15 receivers and four running backs on nsu's roster you know it it seemed out of balance to me that NDSU is known as a power running school that's going to be one of the top couple of schools in Russia in FCS every year and they even were last year top five I believe top three or four thanks for their quarterbacks right yeah um but they they just don't have a lot of depth at running back and they don't have a dude at they haven't had a dude at running back for I mean they thought tamaric Williams was that guy and he was fine but he just he never really panned out to be what what we thought he was capable of being but I mean Lance Dunn uh Bruce Bruce Anderson John Crockett there hasn't been anybody like that Crockett's 10 years ago now that was his senior year was 2014 wow my old Anderson Anderson done were 2018 when they were done I mean you think about some of those teams I mean and and I don't count Hunter lipy cuz he was a fullback you know he flexed every tight end I don't I he wasn't a true you know ieb back type running back outside of the Arizona game he was he wasn't running back against Arizona but your point is well taken there they haven't had that they just and they don't they haven't had the horse they haven't had an Isaiah Davis they haven't had a Pierre strong NSU used to have those guys and other schools didn't and had multiple right that was my next point they had two or three guys like I remember when Seth Wilson came on like holy cow they got another guy who can be their bcow if they need it and it yeah and they had the kid out of Minneapolis last year that they had committed mawood who who flipped to South Dakota state so maybe and they really like the kid out of Omaha that's on the roster Brown Marty Brown they really like him but they just haven't had that the guy that could break a game open so do you think I mean you think about all the the big runs John Crockett had and it was just I mean they leaned on him time after time is bka that guy B's gonna get the I I believe B is gonna be rb1 B he's got the size for it I haven't seen it yet yeah I haven't seen it yet that's you know TK Marshall is there Y and they're they're fine but they're not yeah you know like you look at John crocken said he's going to get a chance in the NFL right which he did yep I mean Bruce Anderson you look at him and said H he's going to get he's big fast yep you know going to get a chance to football yep and he did Even Adam Coffield Coffield was a really I thought a good back as well that 2019 team was Coffield and Ty Brooks worked off one another and were Dynamite yeah and Kobe Johnson was good he was but he was not a you know the the Bellow type of guy no that's so and and and the transfer portal hurt NDSU in that area as well because Coffield transferred even though he's going to be the the running back guy in that spring season um and Dom ganella left and Kobe Johnson had another year left and he left and so that that's they've been hurt somewhat in that area but they just haven't had that guy so it's interesting for Yeah Tim palc to say that that and he's right and it's something that you and I have talked about and thought about I mean we could Hammer offensive line which was we should but the guy who they're handing the ball I mean yes they have the freak in whatever Cole pton is but it defenses also know about what he can do you know still need a guy imagine if they had a guy that could that could crease the defense and then they have to that's a whole another area what happens if Cam Miller gets hurt then Cole pton has to be the quarterback he can't be running it 25 times y so that's so there's some and you and I again have been upfront and honest we think NSU is going to be pretty good in FCS football this fall um I think they're going to be in the mix if they stay healthy for a national championship just like they were last year with a team that really nobody thought was all that great by their standards by nsu's historical standards they were this close to going to frisas they were a tipped two point conversion away from going to Frisco gosh they were playing well at the end of the year they were humming um but you know so but they just there's a couple areas of question that historically they just haven't had questions there I will say defensively they look like they could be what the Bison were of those teams were just talking about we have not SE which is going to help them is that if you I mean we we all know the numbers that those historically good teams even 2021 was given up you know 12 points a game and it hasn't been that way the last couple of years there's been some games you know the UND game or the the title game in Frisco against South Dakota State or the Incarnate Word semi where you just go they're giving up 500 yards here like they're not tackling tackling is Betty themed the last two football seasons that there's no other way to sugarcoat that and I think PA talked about that start of Spring football he's got he's certainly got experience there Hendrick and most start up front you've got cop in the in the middle on the back the Shrine Bowl watch list came out today and I mean Dylan Hendricks is on it and Eli mostard is on it and Cole was nes is on it so there are some guys that NSU has NSU has the most players in FCS on the yeah the shrine bow watch list te for what that's worth I'm gonna give you a guy to watch is Marcus Gully I think Marcus doly is in due for a big year I believe that's and he was a key special teams guy last year um transfer from Minnesota state Morehead we're all the great players come from right absolutely yeah absolutely um I think gully's doe for a big year I I I believe that be the case Logan cop is really good the thing is maybe bison fans should enjoy him this this year I don't know anything I'm not putting I'm not but I just reality the way things go now in college football I would say though you talk about on the running back spot they have not had the guy at middle linebacker either since Jill moved on yes correct they they thought wz would be that guy that did not happen they've rotated with kubitz for the last couple years they're going to do that likely again I don't surmising here but that's that's a spot Mike on the def you just have or Jackson hanky hanky was the last guy hanky was he wasn't the most athletic but he was certainly the most smart he was everywhere you needed to be on the field and he was that The Rock Solid he was a grant type you know to stereotype that not not nearly as athletic or fast as jbril Cox but was always in the right spot always made the tackle yes can I as youve said earlier when given the opportunity always made the tackle Y and that's been an issue the last couple of years not just at middle line everywhere around the field but to me at that spot that's kind of your you got to be good up the middle you you know we were I was talking on line with somebody for again for what it's worth about you know I I'm I'm not very bullish on ndsu's chance to beat Colorado I think that's gonna be a really difficult game for NSU to win mostly because Colorado just has so much offensive skill but as somebody pointed out the the constant in all those NDSU victories over FBS teams was they had a middle linebacker that was outstanding whether it was Duca oh he's great against Iowa he was playing with a torn shoulder DeLuca whether it was Grant Olen whether it was jabriel Cox whatever I mean that they just had that in the middle and they just don't seem to have that guy and that's going to be a big thing I mean you know Nick Duca was running guys down in Iowa sideline to sideline and just you know just a stone wall in the middle Travis back was leaping through the air in Manhattan those kinds of guys and it so that's another thing to look out for when they play Colorado and also those quarterbacks they played in the FBS games were not as as sh Sanders the kid from Iowa was an NFL quarterback got traed he was a statue right you know he literally was a statue cuz uh Greg Bernard blew him up and MJ stump got up right here in the bread shur Sanders is not that so he's that's going to be a chall the kid from Arizona was really good and really mobile but probably not at the level of shadur uh you want an early betting line on that seimo North Alabama game of course uh it's seimo minus 7 and a half right now oh that's okay interesting well hey that same day though Montana State plays New Mexico and V's team is favored to win that game that's going to be a route yeah they're yeah that's going to be rout is not very good no that's going to be an FBS win and you love FBS wins because they're it's an FBS win I do love FB they're not all created equal the committee is told you otherwise though they say they are they put them in there I'm sure that's what I'm sure that's what they talk about in the committee is yeah beating New Mexico is the same as beating Iowa or Kansas State or Colorado or who I mean whatever well I'm just telling you here cuz I know you're ready for it there your week you want your week zero lineup just so you can get it all I can't wait set for here uh so we got the SEO uh North Alabama game which I know you're uh on pins and needles for that uh you can stay up late Delaware State and Hawaii how about oh here's one right up your Aly mcne and Tarlton that's Sam herder team tlon he's all in on tlon I love talking to Sam because every time I talk to Sam State it's just awesome is he on the payroll at tlon I got to Fig out no what what I have been told by somebody from that part of the world is that Tarlton is part of the Texas A&M system and so it is a bottomless pit of money and it's a pretty big school and correct and they have a big enrollment and so they're going to be just fine so that's 2:30 on ESPN 2 on August 24th then the Montana State New Mexico game is at 3:00 North Alabama Simo is 6:00 on ESPN and then in prime time also on ABC is Florida A&M and Northfolk state so there you go that's the week zero FCS lineup for you there boy I'm hope BSU is an FCS for the next 30 Years that I'm alive we are hopefully 30 I'd be old if that happened I guess 32 days in counting from week zero I'm excited I I'm I'm curious to see how North Dakota state turns out this year I'm curious to see Tim palc what I've been told from a couple of booster types is that he has been everywhere he's been shaking hands and kissing babies and and doing all those things maybe that's why he said June was so tough cuz he was on the road too he was on the road he's trying to kind of get things rolling again in terms of just the enthusiasm um so we'll see and I will say this we got to go the it won't happen again probably Mike this the the week one games are really interesting the Buys in Colorado the Jackson Oklahoma State UND and Iowa State there's some ones out there South Dakota and Wisconsin that's week two but you get my drift like that I don't know how often we're gonna get this anymore the Bison it's not till four years from now in Oregon so I'm excited about that to see the comparative SC let's see what happens they'll be in the Mountain West by then or the or the Pack 12 whatever it's love your optimism I'm really not that optimistic about it I don't not I've been beaten down on that whole front thing okay now it's going to happen no it's not going to happen we said it three years ago about this week we thought hey there's a doorway slam slam right in our face great to see about that for coming by Mike mcf joining us each and every Tuesday we're du for a break here we'll get caught up in a couple things and a few emails coming in as well much more reaction from Valley media days uh Jimmy Rogers will speak tomorrow South Dakota State head coach we're back at hot Mike after [Music] this welcome back everybody we got a tour in the house we know where they're from hi guys good to see you where are they from Maddie where are they [Music] from where okay well welcome they're going to go probably see Eric and the boys back in studio control uh email comes in do did you see the big schedule news yesterday uh I did you know we made a big deal last week in rightfully so on the dragons and the Bison going to play basketball against one another Well MSU Mano decided to one up it of course the reigning national champions of division 2 men's basketball uh Matt marthaler the head coach tweeted out this yesterday that Mano will play Kentucky in an exhibition game at rup arena in October that's pretty cool that's fantastic that's uh that's what you do you got some leverage you know what the summ League's not going to play you let's go play Kentucky that's all I know uh South Dakota got a game with Duke a few years ago which was fantastic uh those are those the ones like I would be begging my boss like we have to go like we have to go cover that that that's a once in a generation kind of uh game so cool that that Mano uh was able to get that game um couple other things I wanted to hit on before uh we say goodbye here today we're already flying by here and again we'll have more on Missouri Val media day coming up uh tomorrow right now Doug Phillips the head coach of Youngstown State is speaking Mark Farley uh then we'll speak from Northern Iowa that'll wrap up today tomorrow uh Jimmy Rogers will lead off at 9:30 tomorrow you'll hear that and Bob nielen the head coach of South Dakota tomorrow Bubba schwager will speak at 10: we're going to hear from all three of those coaches tomorrow uh as part of Missouri Valley media days is continuing uh so that's coming up on the show tomorrow the big skies I mentioned had its availability yesterday with all of uh 12 of its teams uh commissioner Tom WIIL did make some news yesterday saying that uh the ESPN and the Big Sky have agreed on a contract extension that'll go through 2030 uh wi will said that'll include a very nice increase in dollars on the current deal which takes effect next year in the fall of 2025 also this little nugget which will uh Drive the the valley crazy because the valley said okay we just got games on ESPN this year we got we got two games on ESPN linear TV this year well next year the Big Sky is going to get four ESPN will Air four regular season football games on its broadcast networks an increase of two over this season and the last couple of years he said uh the Big Sky will also begin to schedule some regular season games wiers still didn't say how many on Friday nights starting in 2025 as it provides quote incredible exposure for our teams hello this is what they need to be doing I understand the high school football coaches here will not like me but I said it as soon as the ESPN deal came down for the valley that the Bison Jack game should be played on a Friday night be unbelievable and you were not competing against Georgia and Texas who were playing the same day the Jacks and the bison are this year wiers said again 8:00 P.M might sound late uh potential local kickoff times which would be 10:00 Central but for everybody on the east coast in the midwest who is at home or at the bar they're watching football and they're going to watch Big Sky football and that's exciting for us and he's exactly right our good friend Kyle Emanuel said that he tweeted it out when we got back from the Boseman game the game in uh Montana state that night as I remember telling him and I told Eric hey when we get home the Southern Illinois Idaho game will be probably in the second quarter because it started at 9:00 Central and guess what it was and guess what that game was amazing and yeah it ended at 12:30 or whatever time it ended but they had a ton of people watching it had a pretty good rating that's what they want it's smart on that so uh big move there by the Big Sky to go and do that he also added that Big Sky schools would be required to pay anywhere from 180,000 to $350,000 annually for the next 10 years as part of the house settlement which I bring that up because Summit League schools like North Dakota State South Dakota State North Dakota South Dakota should brace themselves and fans because that's probably in that same uh ballpark of what the buys are going to have to pay in for the house settlement that's what we heard and I would say that's probably pretty accurate I know Jeff cack did some reporting on that earlier this spring that that's uh in that ballpark of what they're going to have to uh pay in so just to give everybody a uh a mindset of that uh last thing before we break and I want to I'll do some USA hoop stuff before we uh say goodbye in our final segment as I mentioned the Vikings I've officially uh open Camp the rookies reported yesterday some 38 players reported yesterday the veterans report tomorrow they hit the field for their first practice uh tomorrow as well Kevin oconnell and quacy adulam Mena met the media yesterday to start Camp I always remember when we used to go to mano speaking of Mano that they'd have the whether it was chis or Leslie Frasier or Mike Zimmer we would be under this tent in Mano and it would be horrendously hot always there there's you have 85 cameras sted next to one another and fighting for space to shoot the uh the season opening press conference little bit different now with them and their uh pretty Elite setup they have in in Egan at TCO performance center but invariably the question that was asked inevitably is probably the better word of Kevin oconnell is quarterback and when we're going to see JJ McCarthy oconnell addressed part of that yesterday yeah I have no you know preconceived preset uh depth chart in my mind Beyond I I believe I said you know at the end of spring Sam was you know the number one quarterback he had taken a lot of the Reps and most of the reps with the ones um and and Sam had a great spring JJ came in here after being drafted and had a really productive uh spring as well so really my message to those guys is I want a really competitive situation um Sam will you know obviously be you know taking the majority of his reps with that first group but I think you'll see uh JJ maybe get some as well but also it's it's about the the quality and as much as the volume of those reps throughout Camp to really kind of continue to holistically attack this quarterback development program and process for JJ while also knowing uh that doesn't mean the expectation is that Sam doesn't have a process either we've got individualized plans for all of our guys and um where that depth chart Falls uh you know for our first game we get a whole a whole lot of time on the grass and and three preseason opportunities two joint practices to really work through exactly where each individual guy is at this point in time uh going into the season it's going to be the debate of all debates about when we see JJ McCarthy play quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings and I'm of the mindset I've said this I don't think JJ plays at all this season if they're smart they don't do that you've got darnold but if you're going to play him you play him in the preseason like those three preseason games are going to be highly entertaining for viking fans uh to see their prize pick there but I was doing this uh earlier this week upstairs with some of the Die Hard viking fans we have in this building on okay where are you going to see him play you know you look at the schedule we've gone it time and time again and Eric's right on top of this year I mean you're I don't think he's starting if you let's just entertain the thought that he could play he's not playing the opener you're not throwing of the Wolves against the 49ers or the Texans who are two of the best teams in the NFL that could play in the Super Bowl I wouldn't I don't think Lambo field and I don't think the game in London they have the buy after that if you're going to do it anywhere would be that after the buy against the Lions but then remember it's a short week they have three days and then they have to go to LA to play the Rams on a Thursday night so maybe it's after that because after the Rams it gets softer there but that first nine games to start that's that's tough I know the Giants are in there and the Jets are in there say what you will about New York football I think one of those two will be better in 2024 but after that you have the Colts you have three Ries in a row with Jacksonville Tennessee and Chicago but then you know Cardinals Falcons the Monday night are at home at Seattle Packers Lions to end the year I if you're asking me right now I'm circling November 3rd against the Colts a home you you want it at home I I think that would be koc's dream scenario we want him to start at home I don't think you want to start on the road I don't think you want to start him in London you know if it came to that and who know maybe darnold is great and that's a fantastic luxury you're going to have if you can do that it's just I think fans will get antsy Sports talk host will get ansy the minute and he is he he's incapable of not throwing interceptions so the first time that darnold throws a bad pick bring in JJ get number nine in there it's going to happen going to be fascinating to see uh it play out we'll break we come back real quick we'll recap the USA Basketball Victory they swe one out with Germany yesterday and we'll get you set for a fun Sports Tuesday hot mik will wrap right after this all right wrapping things up trading Camp arrivals are the new thing the Bengals just tweeted out this photo apparently Joe burrow blonde burrow guess that works with the white Bengals uh helmet I don't know we have to get our guy Cordell volson's thoughts on uh on this Cordell recently married by the way I'm not sure if Joe was invited I know it was a quite the big guest list I was told over a thousand people were invited yeah 1,200 it was quite the uh to-do out in Western North Dakota to find out if uh his QB was uh was there but uh he's looking stylish back uh for training camp uh real quick before we go USA basketball yesterday played Germany final tuneup before the Olympics and let's just say we showed it yesterday with the sweat out against the South Sudan uh this might be a heck of a lot harder than at least I thought because they got tested and barely one Saturday yesterday our guy Anthony Edwards doing what he does best steals Throwdown early on I tuned out because the USA was up by 10 I'm like all right they're they're back we're going to handle Germany we're going to pull away and we're gon to we're going to win big here and turns out that was not the case whatsoever against Germany you see now we're down two in the third ant knocks that jumper down he played 20 minutes yesterday scored 11 points and had two rebounds a couple of assists but Germany just refused to go away in this game you see they're up two with six and a half minutes to go there the drive from Steph Curry tied the game at 75 the Germans do remember they beat the United States at the FBA World Cup last year I know Stace is going to be happy with the continuation there that Devon Booker got we watched that in his office yesterday was not thrilled Germany up one LeBron had to take over in this game drives and scores up by three and now here come the Germans and the F and they have guys they've got some n that the Vagner play on this team bronze at 18 yesterday they've got Dennis shuder they've got some NBA guys bronze of course just got paid 200 mil by the magic you see LeBron score late USA ended up winning 9 2 to 88 so they finish exhibition play at 5-0 but they only won by four against Germany one against the South Sudan uh this ought to be real interesting once Olympic play Begins for them that starts on Sunday against joic and Serbia is their first game on Sunday I'd like to tell you we show plenty of highlights but the restrictions on Olympic video is like getting anything out of Fort Knox so we could probably show maybe eight seconds starting tomorrow of the Olympics um but we'll do what we can uh each and every day here over the next two and a half weeks beginning tomorrow our poll question today going back is course Valley media day of how many playoff teams will come out of the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2024 I voted three 58% say four will make the postseason in 2024 if we're going to say the three of the four dtas SDSU NDSU USD who's number four is it Illinois state is it Southern Illinois is it Youngstown is it UND do they surprise everybody is it Northern Iowa it be fun to find out uh
