Brewers at Oracle Park and with the loss they also dropped the series two games to one Hayden bong battled Frankie montos in a pitcher duel that hearkened back to the days of the National League predesignated hitter both pitchers tossed five plus shutout Innings but after a free gift of a run from Camilo doval man what was that Jackson Trio launched a two-run bomb to right field to give the is his first start in his last what six games his prior six starts he had failed to to complete five innings on the mount he hadn't done that since the month of July since July 27th against the car Colorado Rockies wow that feels like a lifetime ago in this giant season so many things happened since then but bird song uh tonight dude was really on on point with his uh with his command he was a lot more efficient today uh filling up that Strike Zone he tossed uh 68 pitches 46 of them for strikes living in the strik zone Hayden Birdsong was was not missing super terribly today either when he was uh Missing outside the strike zone his misses weren't you know takes easy takes out of the hand uh it was it was a good thing to see from the kid who had really been struggling his last couple starts he had started to write the ship his last time out there he went three Innings gave up two earned runs but took him 77 pitches to get through just those three Innings of work the uh the Hayden bong's pitch total tonight was lower than it has been in quite some time only as I said 68 pitches tonight for bird song uh the last time that he threw that few pitches was against Washington on uh on August 6 and that was 11 to five loss he gave up seven runs in just two innings in that one every other game since then he's thrown more pitches and been out there for Less Innings so Hayden Birdsong doing a great job tonight being efficient which was the biggest key that we were looking for in tonight's game coming in to this start for Hayden Birdsong he he'd been pretty wild recently and in this one only one walk that was another great sign for uh Birdsong who in his last outing walked Five Guys he hasn't walked one in over a month as well the last time that he walked just one batter was when he tossed four and a third against Detroit on August 11th so again Birdsong doing a lot of things better today than we've seen him do in in quite some time this kid was was really on it today a final slash line for Birdsong five innings pitched two hits no runs just the one walk and four strikeouts that ra down now to 474 on the season and Birdsong as I said he gave the Giants five solid Innings you give that Bullpen a little bit of a break and they they've been used so much frequently or all season long really not just frequently but the the uh the Camila dval thing man uh let's get right into it dval uh gave the Brewers a free run in the top of the seventh it just really spoiled this pitcher duel it was it was uh had that oldtime National League feel like I said and then you get Camilo goal to come in and just ruin all The Good Vibes of that pitching duel he walks the leadoff batter and then issues three consecutive pass balls to allow the first run of the game to score can you still call it a pitcher duel when you got a guy up there just literally handing a run away for free for the first run of the game I mean Camilo doval wow bad Camilo doval tonight and Kye said right out of the uh right out of the jump when Camilo Deval threw his first pitch he said well that was a strike so we know that Camilo Deval is going to be on tonight kind of like Santiago Cas used to be someone in the chat pointed out that similarity in toal and in Santiago Casia couple shows ago uh I wish Kye was right man because dval proceeded to not be very accurate to not have very good control today and I mean this is the same thing that we've seen from him all season long man and and I'm looking at his baseball Savant page right now and and I mean the expected batting average is really good the expected ra not great but better than what his is now the ground ball rate's pretty high the whiff rate's pretty high that chase rate not as good as you want to see though but the really the one thing that's like concerning on here like all those numbers look look fine except for that walk rate man 14.8% you know that he's gonna give up some walks and you combine that with the fact that the ball kind of jumps off a hitter's bats when deval's on the mound I mean I think if he's not dodging him if you're able to catch up to one of those 101 mph fast balls or a 90 plus M hour slider you can give it a ride that Ball's going to jump off the bat it's got a lot of spin if you hit it Square it's going to go and so you does give up a a a pretty substantial number of hard hits as well but when you combine that with the free base runners that he's putting on every inning it's not very good for the Giants and I mean he's just been wild man there's there's there's no two ways about it Deval has just been I mean as wild as a Mustang out there on this mound lately and he's all season long you just cannot seem him to put it together he'll have one night where he's great and then come back out and it's Dr Jackel and Mr Hyde I mean it's it's I I don't know what's going on with him man I really really really enjoy watching Camilo Deval pitch he does get the loss today it's just somehow just his second loss of the season in despite being in the center of all these different points this season for doal H man it's just a bummer watching this guy completely fall apart the way he has this season ER up at five 02 now dval did end up getting out of the inning with just the one run that he allowed but that run shouldn't have scored at all I mean all you got to do is is throw just two wild pitches instead of three and that run doesn't score or just not walk the guy when you're throwing your wild pitches it it just it's so sloppy man and the way that doval kind of just carelessly seems to go about doing whatever he's doing out there and just I don't know man it it's it's it's a far cry for from what he was last season and it's a bummer to watch it it really is to see how this guy has just tumbled so far down from the the allstar closer that he was last year the the Giants ended up giving up two more runs in this one as this one continued in the top of the eighth uh we had Spencer Biven on the mound gave up a single to Bryce terang and then Jackson Cho man this this rookie I've seen plenty of him to know that this kid is going to be a really good one here in the major leagues for quite some time although I'm I'm I'm just kind of tired of seeing him beating up on the Giants because he has played really really well in both of these series that the Giants have played against the Brewers recently and today the kid goes Oppo Taco over that right field wall 302 feet to right 102.8 miles hour off the bat two run bomb gives the Brewers a three nothing lead and on a night when the Giants only collected five hits and went over for six with runners in scoring position struck out 15 times only drew two walks did you really think the Giants were going to come back in this one late I mean I know what they did late there in the ninth inning they uh they had a single and a double to put Runners at second and third which just went out but this is the San Francisco Giants and I know what they did last year or last uh last night not last year last last night with their uh seven hits with runners in scoring position and their their you know Season High 13 runs it would only be right for them to go right back down to Earth get shut out today and go oer with runners in scoring position because that's just who this team is it's in their DNA it's ingrained in their blood whatever it is like this team is anti clutch they cannot get a hit when they need to when the chips are down and you got a runner in scoring position and less than two outs this team shrinks in the moment they have time and time and time and time again and they will continue to do that for the rest of this season I I don't expect that to change at all in fact I really don't know how this changes I I think it's it's it's it's a team-wide thing it's not like there's one guy on the team who you know just seems to lift everybody else and it's so inconsistent we were talking about last night Mike Arky having a great stretch for instance let's just take Yas as as the example today today Mike Mike kky is batting second 0 for four three strikeouts I mean like he's he's the guy who's been kind of lifting this offense to uh being better than it has been in recent days and he he just didn't do anything at all today and Elliot Ramos same thing 0 for four two strikeouts I mean every single giant for the most part struck out Tyler Fitzgerald who got one at bat did not strike out he left in the third with lower back tightness so that's another concern now that we can have for this Giants team and let's just hope it's a minor thing and it's not that big of a deal but it it's concerning to me when whenever you have a guy leave in the middle of a game especially when it's a tie game z00 and it's Tyler Fitzgerald who's you know he needs needs as many reps as he can get at Short Stop that that I mean just to get better at the position he needs to see more balls out there at Short I I I want him to be I want him to get better I want him to be in that position next year but you know I I I I let's hope this injury isn't something that's going to set him back at all we had Marco Luciano come in he went over for three with two strikeouts I mean Matt Chapman had a strikeout Lamont Way Jr and Mark canana both did not strike out so both both dudes who played first base tonight didn't strike out if you're if you're looking for positives Pat Bailey also got one pinch hit at bat and did not strike out everybody else did though Grant McCrae 0 for four three strikeouts Brett wisley 0 for three two strikeouts a lot of ofers in this one a lot of ofers this offense is just putrid there's no two ways about it man this offense needs a a I mean maybe not a complete makeover in the off season but you need to get some key guys in some key positions to make a difference in this lineup I mean you you got the uh you you got pretty much the Outfield is is more or less set I know we talked about that a lot last night and I know I got Mike arky's uh contract situation wrong I understand now that I don't understand very well how arbitration Works in baseball it's pretty damn confusing man at least for me I never claimed to be smart you know I just like I just like baseball man but Mike dky will will have a chance to enter arbitration at the end of the season he is arbitration eligible and if if the Giants do want to bring him back if he does come back next next year I do think that that would be a decent move for a fourth outfielder we'll just see if the dollars and cents uh makes sense and uh Ben gck was actually putting out some info on that so definitely you know like I've said plenty of times before Ben a lot smarter than I am especially when it comes to the numbers and data and contract kind of stuff I I just like me some baseball man I just like me some baseball so Tyler Fitzgerald I really hope that injury isn't uh isn't something more extensive uh who knows what this offense is going to look like next year the Giants definitely need to retool somehow I don't think they need a complete makeover you have pieces you have things to build on Tyler Fitzgerald one of them Elliot Ramos Matt Chapman these are things you can build on Jung hul Le is goingon to be back next year that's a huge huge Plus for the Giants uh but you got to figure out how to get Pat Bailey to be able to stay healthy late in the season I mean this guy has just fallen off a cliff in the second half especially offensively even though last night we did see three hits from p Bailey that was a really really good sign but there's been a lot of uh a lot of a lot of bad in the second half for the Giants a few good things like I said Matt Chapman's had a great second half Mike Arky had a great second half but Tyler Fitzgerald as well great second half but we need a little bit more than a great second half we need guys to be consistent throughout the whole season we need the Giants to get a little bit more production out of some positions like first base and and things like that so we'll see what happens next year when the GI kind of try to beef up this this lineup a little bit and get a guy like Hayden berong some run support because zero runs of run support is going to win you exactly zero games in Major League Baseball so uh as I said big take away from today Hayden Birdsong bounces back in this Giants win they or in this Giants loss excuse me a three nothing loss to the Brewers out at Oracle Park Giants sit at 72 and 75 Brewers beat up on the giants three nothing the Giants fall back to Earth after that 13-run Outburst yesterday too bad they couldn't save a couple of them for today man you could have won nine nothing yesterday or what was it nine to2 yesterday and and won four to three today still and and still had some left over it doesn't work like that but Hayden bird song big story tonight for the Giants kid looked pretty good after his prior six starts really did not bird song got back to uh doing what he does well he in one interesting thing he went away from that curveball today that big Bender that was was so tantalizing when he first came up this is uh this is something that is is interesting to me because that's been kind of his uh his strikeout pitch that's been the the pitch that he's used the second most it's the the the first pitch other than the the four scene fastball that he uses out of the repertoire he throws a slider and a a change up as well but today he really did not throw that curveball very much he threw it just 10 times through the change up 13 and through the slider 14 31 for seam fast balls and that's why he was really filling up the strike zone that's what it tells me is that he he prioritized control over his stuff so to speak and and he was really just going out there and dotting the corners and again he was super efficient today 68 pitches over five innings that is so much better than what we've seen from him in recent months that's the second least amount of pitches that he's thrown since July and it's the most Innings he's pitched since July so I mean that that tells you all you need to know right there he it's it's just the the second time uh in the last it's it's just a second outing ever in The Bigs with just one walk am I reading that right yeah just his second outing ever in the Major Leagues with just one walk so that's another big uh B big thing for bird song I mean it's a career low in walks if he could get a goose egg up there that'd be nice too but we're not to split hairs you know one walk is not is not something to uh to can a guy over so bird song really doing a good job mixing and matching up there he wasn't really getting a bunch of swings and misses in fact with that curveball the thing that he normally gets a bunch of swings and misses with didn't get any he got a couple with the slider got exactly two with the slider and got three with the change up one with the fast ball so in total he only got six swings and misses only 18% whiff rate it's a lot lower than what we normally see from Birdsong but guess what it was effective and this guy I mean we talked little bit about it before we needed this guy to start pitching to contact just a little bit maybe trying to take a page out of that Logan web Playbook and get some ground ball out save that arm and maybe don't have to work so hard you don't have to strike every single guy out you don't need to be Blake Snell going out going five innings with eight to 10 strikeouts every single time out there and lo and behold bird song today four groundouts not bad uh when he uh he faced 17 batters that's that's you know not not Logan web ask but it's a lot better than what he was doing he's he's learning to trust his pitches learning to trust his defense and that's a big step for a young pitcher this guy if he's going to be successful obviously needs to learn how to trust that defense behind him the Giants you know they got Matt Chapman back there I I know that this defense wasn't exactly the best we've seen from the Giants tonight they did have an error But ultimately it's going to be something that you're going to have to figure it out I mean going to have to have a way to to get outs without a strikeout if you're haed bird song you can't go 27ks uh starting the whole you know pitching to every single batter throughout the game it's it's not going to work out that way for you so bird song doing a good job learning how to become a big league pitcher not just a thrower not just a really talented thrower of the baseball but a really good pitcher as well just to give you a example of that the adjustment the bird song made the whiff rate his his a his normal whiff rate for the season is 30.1% he's he's generating a lot of swings and misses in 27.5% strikeout rating but that walk rating 15% of the time he's walking dudes so again great job by bird song really limiting those walks and really pitching to contact getting some strikeouts in the process you know he's still he's still fanned uh four I believe in this one uh yeah struck out four so uh five innings of work and and only two hits only two hits so you do that you're going to win a lot of baseball games unfortunately for Hayden bong the Giants H were were the offense that he had to support him today so not a lot of run support from the offense and we got to give some credit to Frankie Montas I should say the former Oakland Athletic this guy was really doing a great job on the mount for the Brewers Montage shut the Giants down with six Innings only two hits two walks and eight strikeouts just Frankie Mon's seventh win of the Season you look at his uh stats this year and they haven't been you know super super great they haven't been you know franking monos level stats as his ER this year is up around uh four five or four4 but since he's come to the Brewers it's a sub4 ER it's a sub35 ER so he's been pitching really well as of late tonight that Trend continues for Montas and the Giants offense falls back down to Earth because they were bound to regressive eventually they got to regress to the mean at least a little bit if they score 13 runs in a game you you're pretty sure that they're not going to do the same thing the next night out let's take a quick break here on the other side I actually kind of want to talk about Logan web which is interesting because he did not play tonight but but there was some news they came out from the Triple E Engle today the Giants fall to the Brewers three nothing they lose another series at home that's always not great and the Giants they're they're just uh uh six and 11 in their last 17 home games uh over the last month just over over the last month dating back to August 11th uh they've been held down to three runs or fewer in more than half of these games in in nine of these 17 games so that's not very good that's a that's that's not very good the Giants were were on a little bit of a tear before that but you know we even talked about it during during that stretch like the Giants it was a little bit of fool's gold right like the Giants were beating up on the Rockies and and then they got to play the Tigers and then and I think they played the A's in that stretch too and then you had some real teams come to play and you had a actual pretty tough stretch to end this season and through August and yeah when the Giants play tough teams they generally lose that's that's uh generally how it's been this year they've been able to beat up on on the the subpar teams for the most part they've beaten who they've been supposed to beat and they've lost who they're supposed to who they're supposed to lose to and that's it's kind of summing up the giant season right there but one bright spot has been Logan Webb I mean he was uh made his first All-Star team that was was really fun but if you remember Logan Webb's All-Star performance was was not very fun Logan Webb got shelled a little a little bit there or a lot of bit and and it just it was kind of a a sour spot I mean I I was really hoping that Webby would come out and just you know be able to to have his his his half inning moment time to shine but web wasn't really feeling his greatest on that day uh Logan web kind of explained on the Chris Rose rotation podcast that uh he may have been a little bit uh hung over for this All-Star game he the way he explained it it there was a open bar and like a home after the Home Run Derby and and it was all like a players only party and it it really uh uh just you know put Logan web in in a little bit of a predicament because here's Webby I mean making his first All-Star Game he's he's out there and and really trying to take it all in C and and and he's a he's at this point he's a veteran he's not a rookie he's not going to he's not a young guy he's not going to go in there and be all timid and shy and and and worry about what all these other dudes around the league are thinking about him and in the big stage no he knows all these guys he's been around for a minute so here's Webb living in his moment in the Sun and soaking it all in and and just having a time man so well in Logan's we web's exact words here's what he said on the rose rotation he said quote it was probably one of the more hungover days I've been the day of the All-Star Game I take responsibility for that I was having a blast it was a cool experience I'm watching the Derby they had a postgame player celebration like a party for the players and their families it was in the middle of the Cowboy stadium Little John was DJing it's free alcohol I just enjoyed it I didn't enjoy when my wife W woke me up at 7 in the morning and said hey I've got to get my makeup done right now and I was like oh no this is going to be a long day and it was a long day end quote Webby is just one of us Man Logan Webb is one of us because tell me that's not exactly what you're doing if you have an opportunity ever in life to go in in have a a a open bar party in the middle of the Cowboy stadium surrounded by MLB players with Lil John DJing don't tell me you're not having the time of your life there don't tell me you're not having a couple Ries and maybe burning in the Midnight Oil just a little bit even if you have a super important thing the next day that thing it's not going to be nearly as cool as what you're experiencing that night don't tell me that you're doing anything different and Logan web shouldn't be held to any higher of a standard than you or I Logan Webb is allowed to go out and enjoy and live his life and if this what's what if this is what Webby wants to do on his first All-Star Game appearance in his first you know taste of that pageantry I'm going to give Webbie a pass on this one Logan web you go enjoy yourself I mean he did clearly he doesn't need my permission he clearly went and did that his Dam himself and Logan web he he did say that he was able to uh he did everything he could to try and get himself ready to come into that game despite the Raging hangover he said quote I was nervous I was excited I had a lot of Red Bulls I got Tylenol because I'm trying to get the hangover out of me I think I wasted all of my good in the bullpen it was all I had and I wasted all of them then I go from the bullpen and I jog out to the mound and the only thing I'm thinking is quote don't throw up don't throw up don't throw up don't throw up and it's a long jog I think my first pitch almost didn't make it to the catcher wow Logan web man oh man this sounds like me trying to like rally after a fun night before snowboarding up on the mountain in the in the middle of winter it sounds like all of us at various points in time you know just like playing in recck league softball the next morning if you ever played in a softball tournament or anything like that it's it's it's interesting this is uh this is just how we all are Logan Webb is one of us and he's he just happens to be really good at throwing a baseball man and I I couldn't be happier for uh for for Logan Webb making his All-Star team and it was kind of a bummer that he he had a subpar outing but in the grand scheme of things I'm really happy that Logan Webb was uh was had himself a time out there I I don't really care that he got shelled in that half inning I just care that my guy had a good time and that we get him back to another All-Star game because this guy deserves more than this one appearance he'll have plenty more before his career is done I am sure of it but we got to give Webby another chance to get out there and experience the All-Star Game you know not hung over so that's all that that I got for you guys on Logan web Logan web one of us one of us one of us yeah man I I love Webby and and for some reason story makes me love him a little bit more like I love that he's a little bit imperfect you know what I mean I love that he doesn't feel the need to be like this buttoned up perfect guy I love that he's being himself despite the fact that he's he's a big leager you see all the all the Giants by the way out there at uh the 49ers game on Monday they were all all in the uh all in the booth or in in the Luxury Box they're all having a time out there it looked I mean all like all the dudes just getting together having a hang it pretty pretty fun time pretty fun time that's about all the time that we got for you on the lock on Giants postcast I wish this Giants game was as fun of a time as that Logan web story and the the Giants hanging out at the 49ers game but uh it it was not they lost three to nothing they got wiped out by Frankie Monto and every single Brewers pitcher who pitched had at least two strikeouts even dudes even the three relievers who each only pitched one inning so the Giants were really not able to do a whole lot I mean man if you look at those last three Innings uh of of offense for the Giants they only had two outs that did not come via strikeout so did this team just back to doing what it's doing man they they can't buy a hit with runners in scoring position 0 for six eight left on base only two walks and 15 strikeouts that's uh that's not a very good ratio not going to win a lot of games that way and you're going to win exactly zero games when you give your pitcher exactly zero runs of run support Hayden bird song nice bounce back day for the kid five innings pitched his most since the month of July and his ties a career low for walks tonight with just one really really efficient outing for bird song who came back out and threw strikes today abandoned some of that uh offs speed stuff and really stuck with that four seam fast ball he got it he got through it and he he learned to trust his defense a little bit more today which is a very good sign for the kid Camilo doal Dr Jackel and Mr and Mr Hyde you have no idea what you're getting dayto day today he just gave the Brewers a free run to break open this z00 pitching duel and that sucks man that just sucks so does the rest of this giant season they're sitting three games below 500 it's September 12th we're marching towards the end of the season and the Giants are just circling the drain slowly so we'll be coming to you live though tomorrow as we continue to roll through this giant season they take on the Padre's next in a series at home and we'll get into that one as we always do here on the lock on Giants
