we are ready to pop the cork in Champagne Illinois home to the fighting Aline I and the fans plad in orange and blue are more than ready for this one we're really looking forward to this matchup you've got a team that's made its way into the top 25 now trying to pass an all important road test [Music] [Music] Illinois will kick it off to get us underway and he's going to bring it out pull down at the 18 and the decision to bring it out of the end zone was not a good one and now we'll get a look at this offense for the first time today here he comes and obviously defense is always going to be aware of a quarterback but boy he finds a way to put defenses on their heels all the time David I mean what can't he do he's got the weapons he's got the confidence he's got the experience Jesse these kind of guys are so hard to defend you're right they better be able to find a way to get pressure on him cuz if they they don't this is going to be a long day after misfiring it's second [Applause] down the give to the running back from the shotgun and he's knocked down but there's also laundry on the field we'll see what the officials have called we'll repeat the previous down but this time the offense has 10 more yards it has to [Applause] cover on second down wants to throw it he looks that one in nicely he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short quarterbacks love a short passing game early in games because it really helps them so nice job by the offensive quar getting his quarterback ay throw something he can see something that he knows he can fairly manageable distance here on third down from the 27 to the ground to try to move the chains nowhere to run on that when he loses four on the carry man this is a defense that Prides thes themselves on stopping the run and that is a huge statement on their opponent's opening drive of the game third and short they don't just get a stop they get a tackle for loss that sends a very clear message that they're going to be the more physical side today fourth down down and the punt team sends it the other way he'll be content with the field position making the fair catch right around the 30yd line the fighting Eline I take possession and their offense will go to work for the first time as we take a look at our impact players for this one what are you looking for Jesse for a guy to make an impact well these are simply put the leaders of this football team and generally games go how these guys play if they make plays they've got to shot to Wi this no doubt they got to show up these are the team Le these guys have to play well if they're going to win the footb that is an excellent throw by the quarterback finding the window between the zones and delivering that ball on time Illinois lining up [Applause] quickly Free stap Motion in the back field trying to find his man on first down he's got it Bo and he looked as if he was going to go gets it down to the 37 I'll tell you for this defense they're going to have to find a way to bracket this slot receiver because of how athletic he is they're going to need to make sure they've got linebackers and DBS surrounding this guy at all times they've got it at the 37 it's first and 10 from the gun the ground game keeps the legs moving running backs Square their shoulders up it's when they have the most power you see them Square shoulders up and break tackles be strong continue to plow his way forward just making it really easy on everybody in this offense by breaking tackles they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three scanning the field it's altm and the pass is in in complete Jarred Loose by the hit what a hit by the defender that's a good throw and that was going to be caught but how about the defender dislodging the football from its intended target nice job that last incomplete pass has been staring at a third and three they'll try to pick up the first through the air a strike downfield and the defense makes the immediate tackle but he has enough for the first down big third down there for the quarterback and he knew where his best chance was at getting that first he found the curl route made an accurate throw and as a result the offense stays on the field Illinois coming out with a first and 10 from the Red Zone looking for a space unloads to the white out got his man to the left touchdown fighting El Lina that is the ultimate grab and go for the score what nice start for this offense the throw game getting working getting the touchdown pass this quarterback getting a little bit of confidence this passing game getting in a rhythm nice start for this offense [Music] lining up for the pat extra point and the extra point makes it seven nothing so that scoring Drive took only six plays and the Capper a 19 yd toss for the touchdown they're lining up to boot it away [Applause] and they desperately wanted to attempt a return but decided not to instead they'll take the touch [Applause] back they'll throw it on first down got it behind the line it's young and they pick up just a few on that completion early in the game as a DB I'm settling in it's okay if I give up four six seven yards I'm just trying to get settled in guge the speed and then later on I can adjust to the speed of the game line getting set on second down power football with the Run he'll move it up to the 37 yard line and it'll be a first down and that is exactly why you skti to running the football haven't had a lot of success but boom you pop one right that's what you got to do you got you cannot become one-dimensional and just throw the football every down love the offense sticking to the Run nice job getting the first down wants to throw on first down on target to the left and he's knocked down immediately but not before he moves the chains and when you get Zone coverage and you're running curls and the wide receiver Sprints off the ball you know what happens that DB starts to bail and that wide receiver comes back and it's easy pitch and catch for the offense see if they can turn this drive into points they've got it first and 10 at the 50 they'll try the right side nowhere to run on that one Hees four on the [Music] carry that's the end of the quarter and Illinois has the lead here we played one before we move on let's have a look at the stats [Music] [Applause] they've switched into the field and we're ready to get things started here in the [Applause] second off the play fi pocket starts to collapse and down goes the quarterback there are penalty Flags down but it looks as if this might be on the [Applause] offense they'll decline the penalty here and let the result to that play [Applause] [Music] stand on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose downfield and here comes the pressure and there he goes down again great job by the pass rush up front third and long situation they're anticipating pass and they know the quarterback's going to have to hold on to the football nice job pinning their ears back and getting home [Applause] the pun team makes its way onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away no fair catches here looking for room they'll get down and put a stop to return they'll mark it at the 32 they'll go to the ground just working and poking and ping and finding his way up to the 36 it's going to be important this offensive line is able to get a little bit of push just got to give this guy an inch a little crease and he can make yards for movement from the linebackers trying to mess with the offensive Line's assignments now give it to the back and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down wow the running back here showing you his skill set as he's able to rip off that one for a first [Applause] down Illinois right back to the [Applause] line off play action on first down quickly to the tight end and he will step out of bounds after a very productive play what a nice job to the quarterback after the play fake there getting his eyes down the field he had to get that to his tight end quickly knowing he wasn't going to have a lot of space to run with after the catch no huddle offense to the [Applause] line to the air it's altm all kinds of room to throw that one in there really good surge for this offense they moveed the change and he's got it at the 34 this offense is clicking and clearly everything is working the offensive coordinator is calling good plays the quarterback and his unit is executing and this defense right now they have no answers Illinois moving it quickly down the field [Applause] the give to the tail back not much working there it'll be second and nine all right well the offense here to trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this [Music] point second down here and maybe they've got time to get one more snap off before the two-minute warning it's the two-minute warning and we'll see if the offense can tack a little something extra on their lead before the break and now on second down for this offense he's looking to throw the short hands it's Sandy he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense man this defense they have got to get better in coverage if they want to get off the field anytime soon you keep defending like that this offense might hang 50 on you by the end of the game Illinois picked up the first down now here they come again from the Red Zone he's going to throw it caught over the middle it's Sanders be you coming into this game this offense was going to try and get this receiver involved and get him involved early so here they are just finding an easy completion it's not a touchdown but they just want to get this guy lathered up and get him into a r going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down back to pass it's altm he's got it on the move he steps out of bounds but not before he has enough to set him up first and goal you see it more and more smaller wide receivers I don't care about their size anymore I put them in the slot I let them get a good match up they're so quick people can't get their hands on them they make plays and I feed them the football these are guys that have a lot of catches throughout a season they keep attacking through the air can't make the grab as he was looking for his man right at the goal line I love the coverage on defense in the Red Zone everyone's got their eyes on the quarterback and they're flying to the football and you saw that there on the incompletion and the defense stop him again on second and goal he's looking to throw and the quarterback is knocked down back at the 13 and defense is about being great in the great situations on the third Downs goal line situations like this when you need to get a few stops putting a few stops together even though you gave up a long drive to get down here they've gotten push back but his still third and goal the offense will have to use its first time out of the half it's still third and goal looking downfield and he needs a bunch there's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half I think you've seen two plays back to back now with poor pass protection guys have to do a better job you've got a golden chance here to put a touchdown on the Bo two consecutive plays they can't protect the QB it is perfect and that lead grows even bigger [Music] so they put the field goal on the board and about to kick it away and hoping that'll be the final points of this first half fielded In The End Zone it's Hardy stopped at the 17 and he's probably second guessing that return first snap of this drive will come from their own 17 he wants to start this drive with with a pass it's complete on the right side finally run out of bounds but he has his offense rolling with a first down well we see another catch by this guy this defense is going to need to do a better job of tackling the catch in coverage I know they want to slap the ball away but if you can't do it and force the incompletion you've got to at least make sure you're able to drag him down to the ground as soon as he catches the ball comes out throwing on first down not much of a chance there he just had to get rid of it to avoid the sack the incompletion on first down now they face a second and 10 from the 31 he's looking to throw fires a full now it's picked off not much of a chance on the return but they'll have the ball at the 33 and that's just excellent cover they cover one nowhere to throw the football look at everybody playing man across the board you still got the safety in the middle of the field nobody open and if I'm the QB man I don't need to force it I Don't Force It In The Tight Windows if it's not there he throws it unfortunately gets the interception bad decision by the QB there the Illinois offense returns to the field they're already in field goal range but Jesse they want to be aggressive but they can't take a negative play the play caller has got to look up and down as sheep here to find a shot to the end zone David be aggressive and see if you can get a touchdown late while knowing that I've got three in my back pocket Don't Force the ball into a bad situation but we're definitely trying to get a touchdown they're in the Red Zone first and 10 from the 20 he wants to throw fires to the wide out can't make the grab quarterback just missed him a little bit bad news on that play It's the good news is the quarterback knew if his guy wasn't going to catch it nobody was but that ball Landing [Music] that running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the break to throw it's altm and it's incomplete but the penalty flag has fallen in the holding Zone let's see what the call is amazing how many times an offensive holding penalty will stall a drive we'll see if the offense can overcome it quarterback wants to throw on second down this time it's complete they make the stop but not before he takes a chunk out of what they need to move the sticks the the offense uses a timeout to stop the clock and they'll get a quick breather and in the final seconds of the first half they'll send out the field goal unit and he's already one for one so this time he'll try to put one through from 39 yds out right down the boulevard it's good now Trot off to the locker room after the field goal to close the half [Music] we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connors in our halftime update guys you've been taking in a magnificent scene there today in champagne and it's been said football is a game of inches and guess what based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per play how can you argue that I mean the low-lying fruit is to look at some of the explosiv plays we've seen in panic but really this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball and how they play when it matters most and with that let's send it back to the guys at Memorial Stadium all teed up and ready to go here in the second [Music] half fielded In The End Zone it's Brian not nearly as much as he'd hoped when he brought it out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 here comes the Ali ey offense back onto the field they got plenty done through the air in the first half and we'll see if they even need to look for balance as we start the third quarter well and I I think defensively you understand like the running game isn't a big part of the plan I wonder how they adjust and play more coverage to this pass at the offense yeah so you're going to have to be ready if you're a quarterback then you're probably going to see some different coverages you might see a little bit more Blitz in this second half as well so you have to know where your answers are leaves it with the back P his way ahead really good run to get it out to the 20 a pick up of five you see they need more runs like that just it's been so few and far between defensively they've been in position they've been winning their one-on-one battles getting off of blocks and rallying to the ball carrier this defense has done a nice job slowing down the Run game thus far looking for a man it's altm he's got it and he'll have enough for the first down at the 42 this is exactly why third down is re this every single day third and short third and medium third and long it's money down for a reason you got to lock in great success by the offense so far on third down Illinois lining up quickly he leaves it with his back they'll rip off eight on that play it's second and two I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points 8yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and short [Applause] out of the shotgun they go to the ground looks as if Illinois will have enough for the first down well it's not a home run but it's just enough by the running back to bre the Champs Illinois putting together a really nice drive they'll put the tight end in motion the G to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one so you get stuffed on first down you had an idea of what you wanted to do on second but I'm guessing it's back to the drawing board now yeah you got to figure out who you are and what you are uh what's your next best play or what is the defense going to do if they've been aggressive okay well if they've been aggressive I'm going to throw that deep ball if they've been sitting back I might sneak a draw in here on second down he'll fire he's got his man they're able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker and this offense I think will do a good job in this game divvying up the football and distributing it to different guys in the passing game it won't just be receivers it's not going to be tight ends this running back he's a weapon too after he catches it you saw it right there they want to get this defense on its heels looking to throw it's Alm he makes the connection that'll be enough for the first down as they mark it down at the 31 yd line third and short and I guess the only thing they really took out of play and the shotgun was the quarterback sneak yeah and that's kind of what I like to do Reese I mean third and inches I I want to run the quarterback sneak run the football but this team fully comfortable throwing the football and you see why easy pitch easy catch first down wide receiver coming across in motion to the air on first down zings it complet to the right they make the stop but not before they do their work up top and pick up a first down know it's a nice throw by the QB there when you're throwing to running backs you got to make it easy on them so you want to put it right on their body make the catch simple and let them go to work like they did just there getting that first Illinois coming back to the line with a first and [Applause] 10 from the Red Zone looking for a receiver pass rush gets there gets home gets him down at the 23 and the defense needed that one badly they're losing in this game they just gave up a big play so they finally get the sack but you feel like they're going to need more than that they're going to need some turnovers to get back in this game they've got some serious work to do to keep that last one from messing up this drive second and 19 give to the running back they bring him down but a solid pick up to put them in position to pick up a first down looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out not a lot of ground to cover and not much to defend a big third down in the Red Zone from the gun wants to pass trying to get to it and they can't make the connection and it could get worse a penalty flag on the field and it's in the holding Zone let's get the call so the penalty will not be enforced defensive mind he stands on the result of the play and they'll run the field goal unit back out there this kicker has already banged a couple through good right down the Boulevard and now the leaves extended a little far [Music] [Music] they were able to get a field goal on the board and now they'll kick it away [Applause] on the move from inside is five and the returner is brought down but there is a flag on the Play Holding receiving [Applause] team so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty first down here for the offense from the gun they'll try to impose their running game they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one you see all this movement in football now all the stem in the defensive line they're sliding right before the snap creating confusion for the offensive line then they're moving back and stunting really good job by the defense continue to move continue to stunt continue to get in the back field and make this life hard on this running back looking left got his man they get him on the ground and that'll be the final play of this third period that's the end of the quarter and Illinois has the lead here this has been utter domination through three quarters and The Stance will back that up one more period to go and we'll see just how much fight they've got left in them the offense has it first and 10 from their own 20 he's looking to throw it right down the middle fires into traffic intercepted and return there would have just been icing on the cake have to settle for the cake at the 23 it doesn't get any better from your defense you know exactly the situation in the fourth quarter everything in your favor don't let him make big plays how about you make a big play nice job get the interception it's not icing on the K yet it's getting pretty close the Illinois offense returns to the field so last time David they ate up some clock ran a bunch of plays but settled for the field goal yeah but they're still up Rees deep shot for the Zone and they weren't able to make the connection they were looking for an explosive play you know it's a good decision by the QB because his attended Target wasn't open so throw it out of bounds you can live to play another day here on this [Music] drive and the incompletion brings up a second [Applause] down trying play action caught near the sideline it's Sanders you know the defense doesn't have an answer for this slot guy right now they may want to think about bracketing him having a Defender play to the outside and to the inside probably some sort of Zone coverage where you're trying to get two bodies forcing the quarterback to have to go somewhere else with the ball just outside the red zone at the 21 but it's third and long from the gun he leaves it with the back and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down and these defensive tackles just eat people they swallow human beings when you get near them they're so big so strong those guys those running backs coming they just need a mid they put one mid on a running back and he usually falls to the ground just because of their sheer mass and [Applause] strength and this one splits the upright and now the lead is even bigger well they're able to get a field goal put three points up on the board after getting that interception you would like to have seen the offense do a little bit more with that possession to give themselves an opportunity to score a touchdown but listen teams will take three points anyway [Music] [Applause] they that lead just keeps getting fatter in this kickoff team doing a little [Applause] running here he comes inside his own five and the returner could find no daylight he goes down offense getting set for first down they'll crank up this drive with the pass all kinds of time before he fires right and they are pushing the ball down the field a big pick up on that one and the tackle is finally made and this offense has got to kick it in high gear now making a big play that is great but we got to go up Tempo we got to go fast we're trailing big in this ball game we got to put a lot of Drives together and maybe even get lucky with an outside kick the running back has it just a solid stop by this sophomore I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you hear a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it didn't get much on first down it's second and nine he's looking to throw unloads to the right that is just a sideline credit throw catch to drag everything you want well this offense has not put their best product on the field today they've got no points to show for any of their effort so far but they've still got a chance but if it's going to happen it has to happen now in this two-minute situation this is where their Playmakers need to step up they'll throw it on first down unloads to the wide out and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down at this point of the game in the fourth quarter it is going to be tough for this offense to get some completions here because now trailing by this much the defense is expecting pass and they're putting a whole bunch of extra DBS on the field to help them out in coverage the incompletion brings up a second down he's looking to throw not the type of accuracy you typically see from this senior quarterback and that's just the kind of game it's been for this quarterback in this offense you got a great game planing all week long you're watching it throughout practice you think you're going to have a chance to light up the scoreboard but they're just not able to hook up you got to give this defense a ton of credit they've done a great job in coverage they've been breaking on passes they've had their number and that's why they're leading by as much as they are coming after it and the quarterback will take a sack back at the 36 good disciplined defense on that play it's third and long right you're not going to bite on a play fake nobody's going for that everyone knows it's a passing situation and they use their speed to get to the QB coach has no no choice here the offense has to stay on the field down multiple possessions this late fourth down attempt coming he'll try to throw and pick up the first down he's got him and they convert big pick up before he goes out of bounds but there is a flag we'll have to see if it [Applause] stands the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty they'll try to keep this clock moving on the ground and he's ridden to the ground but there's also a flag down let's check the call that penalty moves the ball back 10 yds will replay the down looking for a productive play on first down the give from the gun serges across the 30 out to the 32 a 6yd run no mystery on that play with the lead we are going to run the ball you know it's coming and we are running right at you right into the teeth of the defense and they're still able to get a nice game we've reached a two-minute warning and this offense will be quite content just to drain the rest of the time away here comes the offense on second down [Applause] they'll leave it with him they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and after taking a loss on that last run a little bit of pressure right now for this offense on their own side of the field they've got the lead here in the fourth quarter but this is a critical third down that they have to convert they don't want to give the ball back and put the pressure on their own defense this is a third and long [Applause] they'll ride the running back and leave it with him and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop offense facing fourth down Illinois lining up to punt this one aways it [Applause] away not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair catch the offense set for a first down [Music] play he's going to pass and the quarterback caught up two and sacked at the 12 I just love the effort by the defense on this play we're late in the game it's in the fourth quarter guys are tired they're not able to get to the QB right away but they continue pursuing him and they're able to get to him outside of the pocket nice job a first down sack can wreck a drive let's see what they've got on second and 14 they get the timeout called 11 seconds remaining to play a first down sack can wreck a drive let's see what they've got on second and 14 he's looking to throw fires to the wide out the pass is incomplete and we dwindle down to 7 seconds and it's just been that kind of day for this quarterback in this offense guys they have never been able to get into a rhythm throwing the football timing's been off accuracy hasn't been great we've seen some drops just not in sync and that's why they find themselves trailing by a lot right here late G on Third and long you'll have to turn it loose deep he's taking a deep shot and it's incomplete but there's a flag in the back field let's see who the calls on hold it off [Applause] they'll decline that penalty obviously very happy with the results of the play and after that best thing you can do hunt it away here comes the Special Teams now a fair catch is call for a may just shy of Midfield [Music] [Music]
