whatever that's called Ron Waxman kind of nuked US soccer on on Twitter basically saying they screw Jesse Marsh over that comes from Jesse Marsh effectively being offered the job now how much of it was here's the contract we want you to be the head coach of the US Men's National Team or how much of it was a handshake you think he got offered that's the story okay multiple people that I've only ever heard one that story okay well I don't know for sure and I'm usually enough of a you're more connected than I am hell you Austin trusty is your friend so you would know better than I know he hasn't told me anything Austin trust is not giving enough information I don't want to get him in trouble he's not LinkedIn dming me info about you linked you he doesn't know he doesn't know to what Tim ree said this week by the way they don't know anything anyway right now the story is I'm I'm okay whether I believe it or not let's just leave that to the side the story is that Jesse was off for the job or effectively off for the job and it was the players after I guess Matt Crocker called them all up who said no we want Greg to come back who effectively ended the possibility of Jessie that's a lot of hearsay for us to stand on it's a lot of here saying it's a lot of connecting dots that don't really make a ton of sense right What scenario works either way the scenario I gave you a second ago about Towing the line when you have to tow the line that works in the other half of Jesse Marsh's scenario too because he's saying now players are talking about accountability and stepping up and so even if they weren't Towing the line then they still are in a position where they have to tow the line now they always they always have to put the outward perception it's also it's also it's also he he's calling them for he's calling them out for being hypocrites right but he's not giving them the grace to have changed their minds after what happened with Copa America right okay so you what I'm saying Jessie Marsh can call them out for hypocrite but he has to wait six months before people behind the scenes give his story of what happened to us soccer he's not saying what happened with us soccer no he's not being so isn't he a hypocrite too then he has said he has said he wouldn't he he without being direct all right and there's some sort of which the players aren't being direct either well I I get it but I think he's being more direct in the player like to his to to be fair to Jesse Marsh he's been more Brig about the the national team setup and the program and and US soccer because he said like as long as these people are in charge I don't want to work with us soccer now again that's that's also a jilted guy he was if he was thought he was going to get the job and he didn't he thinks that everything's a joke over there now again let's go back to the timeline here so the story is Jesse Marsh is effectively offer the job whether that's by uh Joe Cocker or not I don't I mean by him or somebody else it would have to be him right because Matt Crocker is supposed to be the guy making decisions and I went now since then oh Matt Crocker says I know more and I'm in a better place to make a good decision and by the way we still don't have that decision get the mo morio poo thing done Matt please thank you very much but we go back so Matt Crocker is supposedly supposed to have said hey uh Jesse we want you to be the coach or I want you to be the coach you're going to get the job and then he goes to the players and then the players say no we want Greg to stick around and then changes is true if that story is true yeah that makes me lose a lot of respect for Joe Cocker A lot of respect I don't know why Matt Crocker would put himself in that position to be dis seems he's enough of a professional so so look so so again it's prob this might be go above Matt Crocker's pay grade right and people people who are most cynical about us soccer will tell you this probably doesn't land on Matt Crocker's desk it lands on the desk of the president and the CEO right so you're saying Cindy parlo con was a huge fan of triple G I'm what I'm saying is that you've got people at the top who don't always make decisions based on what is just best for the soccer side of the story they may go well you know we we've got Greg coming back we don't have to pay him a crazy amount of money J Marsh isn't getting invited to leadership conferences maybe I mean what it could be a million different things got Nike TI on theet could be again it could and this is not the problem is that whether or not you believe this is defensible do you believe it's defensible when the people in in an organization who know somebody right who have a relationship with somebody go hey we want that guy to stick around we like him he's a nice guy to us like we we think he's a nice guy right in in any other situation right in any other corporate situation that person's job performance is not visible to the world right that person is not out there with like showing them their their sales numbers like hey this is how much I sold last quarter y I didn't sell a lot but I'm a nice guy keep me around in this case and and Greg Balter came out of the World Cup this is All About That World Cup post-ww World Cup timeline right it's the the June rehiring of burh halter during the the Nations League he came out of that world cup not not not a guy who had completely dropped the bag not a guy who had completely botched it or screwed it up a guy who was in some quarters getting some praise in some quarters getting some criticism it was not as though everybody in the world thought Greg balder did a [ __ ] job at the World Cup was it no it I think they hit most expectations fell short others but sure I mean you can look at the game against Holland and say well they he he got out coached a billion by a billion times over look at game the England and say that they overperformed whatever you want look and again that's Eye of the Beholder kind of stuff right so he comes out of that world cup with the the whole investigation and the Geo thing hanging over his head and I and my reasons for not bringing him back were largely that he he talked he told Tales out of school about Gio which I thought was a transgression you shouldn't forgive right but US soccer from a performance perspective could say well he didn't do terribly at the World Cup and we know him and the players know him and to them that was a positive not a negative right it's only now post Copa America that were all like well they were too comfortable and they I mean I know some people were saying that ahead of the Copa America tournament but my my point is that Jesse is is Rel litigating something that at the time was not crazy it was not what he wanted to happen but it was not crazy his issue seems to be that he was told something that didn't come true and now he wants to call out the players who at the time look again I'm just trying to get to human nature here like if they know Greg and they like Greg why would they not vouch for Greg why would why would they say at that moment in time you know what we need a new coach we need a new CH I don't doubt that there's players that advocated for GG ber halter because they felt like they were building something that they were going someplace um and I think that helped inform the decision that they were willing to be vocal about it but I also think that most players realize that the last year has not been good enough the results have not been good enough the play on the field has not been good enough the demonstration of maturity by serginho Des and Tim waya not good enough this is my point this is a this is a some of these it's a sliding scale they're allowed to both supported Balter and not be happy now thank you thank you and I don't think that Jesse is allowing for that but again I think he's speaking from emotion more than he's speaking from logic which I I guess I get right and I don't know that by the way I don't don't know that this is about siding with one over the other both of them can be wrong US soccer can be wrong with how they handled the whole thing and Jesse Marsh can be wrong with how he is responding now right and again none of us were in the room when he interviewed with us soccer none of us were there when he was apparently off of the job if that's a thing none of us know exactly what the player said we we know for through reports that they apparently vouched for bur halter and we do have look we have pic went pretty public with some support for bur halter I think Tyler Adams went pretty public with some support but I mean it's not like there were 23 guys who who like Char also Nam the two Captain offer what you also named the two captains I did that's true that's a fair point but they don't speak they still don't speak for everybody they speak for themselves when they're not Oni speak for Ricardo Pepe I mean but that's the thing Brooks like we don't know do you know how they actually feel you mean yes no and and I don't think we're ever going to and I don't think we should it's their business their business honestly I'll be honest I'll take a step further I don't give a [ __ ] there it doesn't change what the coach's job is yes how the players feel about the coach should never fall into play it should never matter if the team is getting the results it needs to get now if the team's not getting the results they want yeah locker room attitude what players think start to matter because then owners are looking for outs presidents and and CEOs are looking for outs but when every if it's winning no one gives a [ __ ] I mean there's plenty of the best teams in sports over the years have not always gotten along with their coach this is what I mean right so much of this is us being prisoners of the moment and being tied into results-based analysis right so much of this is oh we we we need a coach who isn't Friends at all with the players and and and holds them to this incredible St standard and they have to prove themselves every day in training and all that stuff and all that stuff sounds good and that can be an effective way to to coach a team I'm not saying it's not an effective way to coach a team but there have been plenty of coaches who have been you know closer to their players arm around the guy you know whatever it is that that they did to to ingratiate themselves to their group and then those teams win and everybody goes oh what a great man manager that coach is listen there there's a point to be made that when the average age of your team is 22 going into a World Cup yeah you might need a coach that's a little bit more of a Kid Glove coach because you're literally playing with kids you know but when your average age is going to be 25 going into a world cup and everyone's got to W up under their belt already that may not be the right guy for the job anymore I swear that we made that argument like a long time ago that like it's okay look you may not love Greg berhalter and his resume was not Sterling when he got the job and I understand that there's a lot of people who would accuse US soccer of hiring some dude's brother right that that's definitely out there right it's not as though Greg Balter had achieved so much that being being his brother's brother didn't have a a negative impact on how people viewed him but you could say that in terms of the person he was that he fit that group at least in terms of the hiring process okay whether the results measure up is a different thing and clearly we do not have a federation that is willing to pull the plug at the first side of trouble it's you're going to have to go pretty bad for them to be like okay yeah I guess now maybe and some of that's monetary concerns with contracts some of that is who are you going to go get and who can you attract and all those things they're all parts of the the calculation here so but they made the decision that they had to make after Copa America and again we're still waiting to see if it's going to be Mauricio poach oh the wish if there was a map that Ed where every US soccer man and woman pool player with at least let's say minimum of of 25 caps where they grew up their Hometown okay if you plotted all that on a map and I would love to play a game of who can feeli the best 11 within 20 miles of a geographic area oh man like pick 20 miles and like and what's the best 11 you can make what's the best 20 M radius there are two places in the country that would be the the obvious candidates to win this battle it is your area I think I agree it is also Carney Newark Harrison that New Jersey there's a sheer amount of options you would have you know I think you could probably get out into that LA area as well la is really spread out though um I'm trying to think St Louis would have a decent shout I know that all of those put those into a data base so they can be plotted on a map is 25 too many and then give us the opport like like is a lot then overlay those those coordinates onto the map so then we can use our our 20 M radius to figure this out so Jared can feel earlier I think it was Aaron told us he's a geographer by profession come on baby oh my God that's a you can be you can be a geographer what is that is that even the right term I don't know geographist what do they call map people I don't even know Mist there's a word for that it's a much fancier word I I don't know man but I think we which has names like Abby wach and Carly Lloyd and and Michelle akres and Mam and the list goes on so where she where does she I mean is she sort of properly ranked based on her goal number relative to every Are We R her positionally or just like in terms of her stature as a player for the national team overall man that's so she's not on she's not she's not in the in like she she wouldn't be S tier Striker no I think box got her I think mam has her you know that's a one two right there I think she's third in terms of theic Strikers so so we're not playing we're only playing with one these days but if you were playing a 442 would she be on your second team I don't think she on my second team yes second team in a 442 Abby wach Reigns Supreme in a 442 the the ability to play back to goal and like to play that old school number nine position there's no one else in the women's game that's ever done that that's why I asked if he makes your second team because I on your first team is mam on your first team and then that means Carly Lloyd is on your second you know if I'm playing a two Striker then yeah it's for me it's Mam and and Abby wach they're just that that's an amazing onew combo if you think about it what one has and the other one has they're very different and I think they would combine well it's a I think Alex Morin is probably the best 433 forward it's not big little but it is that kind of vibe Abby wacks the back to gold player and then M playing off of her so that's what I'm asking you so and and you could make an argument that depending on what part of her career you're talking about Alex Morgan could play either one of those positions agreed I still don't think that she is as good as either of the two players at their best I think she was probably the best athlete out of them I think she's probably faster than either one of them she was yeah it was but I don't think I think the other two were so good at what they did and granted they got the chance to play against women's teams that were not at the level where women the women's game is now but despite that you can only judge them by what they were around there's something interesting there for the future of the players who come in behind Alex Morgan because she may be the last one to sort of benefit from a US Women's National Team D Pad the stats a little that helps you pad your stats listen and no women's players going forward are ever going to have the Caps that mam and Abby that Abby wach they were playing so many more Women's National Team games because the they were C they were uh um they're making up for the fact that the club system wasn't as consistent and in be Ham's case not present so the the amount of caps that those players had that that you it's always goingon to be tough to compare stats with them yeah absolutely this is we we're going to we're going to end up having a lot of eras discussions when it comes to the US womans national team because how do you compare Michelle akres a player who played multiple spots on the field but is still ranked what sixth all time in goal scoring for the US women playing in an era where there were maybe what three fully funded national teams in the world I mean fully funded is even a stretch the US women were they they weren't getting what they should have gotten they just existed right so at if Michelle lers was playing today would she be as good we could get lost in the sauce on that very very quick for what's going to suck is that when a generation like my me yourself when the generation that got to watch a Michelle Acres play isn't around to defend a Michelle Acres I'm worried what revisionist history is goingon to happen to a player like that because for people that watch her play I will tell you right now she would be one of the best players in the world right now she would be one of the best players in the world right now that may be true and I also think it's always difficult to unpack what would that player be with their natural talents if they had trained and and learned and grown in a different system one that was more more ready to make them into a top I'm not going to be mean and say names on that 99 team there's names on that 99 team that I don't think would be close to the national team right now okay that's probably Fair yeah but there's also ones I think would walk on okay you know I mean so so and I don't know that this is even fair to anybody involved especially Alex because yeah she gets she deserves to stand on her own as a great us woman national team player and as a great goal scorer for this team and a goal score they needed let's be honest about that too I mean pick up the mantle when Abby left as aby's career winded down it was like okay well where do we go remember how many times we talked about where do they go for a nine where do they go for a nine and what happened Alex Morgan was like okay I guess that's me now and instead of being baby horse out running play uh people getting in slipping in behind constantly she changed her game I mean she she national team changed their game they she sacrificed goal scor You could argue she sacrificed goal scoring for the last three or four years of her career to help the US woman his national team be better and they won let's be honest about the the the transition that happened while Alex Morgan was was proficient or prolific in during her era Abby wach if you go back and watch those games the US bypassed Midfield constantly constantly B byass you she won everything in the air why would you so you you have a diff completely different style Abby wach leaves the game and us and and honestly us goes the direction the world was going anyway that 4-33 more possession base play through the Midfield they've adopted that over the last eight years 10 years you know but that part of that transition is that you had an Alex Morgan that could play off the back line you know that could get behind and actually uh combine onew pass you're through and she's out on a break Abby Wok's not running a break you know it's very different eras between the two but I still think Alex Morgan for all that she is I will say she is a higher level caliber player prolifically in the US pop culture than Abby wbach lower than mam though I would say she's up you mean like just her resonance as a figure yeah I mean there's lots of reasons for that I mean you can't you can't you can't kind of pull out her her conventional attractiveness as part of who she was as a figure but obviously there was never any question she was good enough for the national I mean the last couple years we had talk we talked about whether it was time to move on but at her prime it wasn't like oh she's only there because of X Y and Z no it was because she was good because she scored goals and let's if we're talking I just wish she had had a a good European season or two I really wish she had made those work when they were over there that's the one thing that's really missing from her resume uh let me ask you this very quickly in terms of iconic moments men's women's doesn't matter iconic moments American soccer I think it is Brandy and the shirt and 99 yeah like photos right moments um man Rino at the at France rapino in France but but but Alex in France with the teacup that's what I'm asking where does that fit I thinko we gotta remember what was going on around rapino I'm not I'm asking you to Place Alex's thing in the rankings not I know it's probably not Megan Rino third third all time third ahead of third ahead of let's see uh what's you can't even think of another one that's why it's third the dog pile against Algeria I think would Oh Oh I thought oh I'm I was thinking just a women's game no everything everything us Brandy's number one no matter we saying just us just us American soccer I think I think Atlanta Donovan's moment now if you're talking about a still frame the still frame is not famous for the Atlanta donov thing but if you think moment the Algeria moment was a bigger thing than Alice Borg's uh picture but her picture is Iconic more than anything I can think in the men's game it's kind of hard to pick bigger than guca star down at borghetti bigger than dece face yeah those are the those are the candidates I think um bigger than Alexi La a picture of Alexi lws in 94 yeah any picture of Alexi l94 those pictures in 94 any picture of in 94 uh yeah it it's a moment it's a sort of a an orchestrated moment rather than an an impromptu moment or something that happens on the field like could we argue tab getting his his head cracked is like a bigger moment maybe but it's not nobody remembers that exact it's not out there it's not out there like that the women's team had the benefit of having tremendous Su success at the correct time pop wise pop culture-wise you know yeah it's big the I I don't know if the average US I think the average men's team fan is not properly calibrated to how much bigger the women's team is you think that well that might be true now but but I think that's also partly because yeah okay I see what you're saying there's a generational thing there yeah right because we had we had 2002 on the men's side but other than that it was like it was mostly like the women are the best team in the world they're they're more important Americans love that to American soccer than the men's team was I I there there's way more pictures of Alex Morgan on kids walls than there ever was of Landa Donovan that's probably true I think that's probably true definitely true that's probably true I can't prove it but definitely true definitely 100% true if I'm Alex Morgan honestly if I'm Al Alex Morgan that's one of my I I would be so happy with that if that was my legacy oh absolutely absolutely that's man let's say it congratulations to Alex Morgan on an incredible career when she is eligible she will be a US soccer Hall of
