Straight out to Meg with more on the energy
substation situation. Sure. Well, Leslie people are being told
here in the general
Myer Patterson area of Algiers is about a
block from the
river by New Orleans that their power is
going to be back on
at one o'clock. Now, look behind me right here.
You can see energy workers
are there. You can see that charred
out big piece of equipment that caught
on fire earlier today. It's just a completely
charred and black. Let's go right to video that
neighbors and viewers of ours sent into us at
channel four news. People who witnessed and
saw the big fireball. They uh some described
it as an explosion, lots of black billowing smoke
very thick in
the area. Now, energy New Orleans tells
us that a fire substation caught on fire and that
happened around 845
this morning. They say because of this
fire, 9400 customers now have been without power since
before nine o'clock this morning. It is under investigation. They
don't know what actually
caused that fire. Now, let's go to some video
about an hour and
a half ago that photojournalist Adam Copus and I were here, we saw the fire
department on
the scene and FD responded. They had nine
different units here with 27
different firefighters working. This fire took them
about an hour to get things
under control. They tell us that there are
absolutely no injuries and they say that it was
smoldering
and then we talked to some neighbors
about what
they saw. Here's what they had to say. I was in the kitchen cooking
and I heard the pop and
pop, pop, pop, pop. I stepped outside. And once I
stepped outside, boom, I heard
I heard the explosion, the fire. It was smoking
a lot of smoke. And that's when I noticed it was,
that was on fire
over there. That's why our lights went out because I thought it was the
break at first. Was it scary?
Yeah, I was scared. I ain't gonna lie. I was scared
but my neighbor was
outside before me. I heard her verse. When I heard her, I came
outside the whole sky
full of smoke and fire a little bit. Now, this is important for
everyone in Algiers. Not just the people who
don't have power. There's one waste water system
in Algiers
and of course it's off line because
there's no power, sewage and water board tells us
that they are bringing
in generators, portable generators to help
get it back going. But they want everyone in
Algiers to limit
waste water. Now that's doing your laundry,
the dishwasher, the sinks
using the bathroom. So limit that you can get fresh
water out of your faucet.
That's fine. It's just waste water until
that goes back online. They ask
people please
limit that and they're trying to get those
generators to those lift
stations to not
make it as bad as if they
didn't have any. So that's what's going on here. Now, of course, again, they're hoping one o'clock
for the power to come back on reporting
live from Algiers Meg, Ferris eyewitness News Meg. Thank you very much.
