another day without a decision in the federal corruption
trial against former Toledo City Councilman
Gary Johnson. The judge told the court withine last hour the jury is deadlocke, though he did not explain
to what extent they disagree and on which char. Johnson is charged
with two counts of bribery in an alleged cash
for votes scheme. Jurors began deliberating
yesterday
and went home after about 5 hours
with no decision. Today, a full day of deliberati. The jury will return to court tomorrow morning when the judge has requested them to try again. Well, here's a look
back at the case. The investigation into
the Bribes for Vote scheme started back in 201. A federal grand jury
indicted Johnson and fellow former council
members Tyrone Riley, Yvonne Harper and Larry Sykes. That was on June 30th, 2020. Charges came out against local attorney Keith Mitchell
the next day, accusing him of funneling bribe. Payments to Harper. All four council members
voluntarily left their positions later
in July of 2020, and Mitchell died awaiting trial on April 1st, 2021. Harper pleaded guilty to conspi, while Riley and Sykes pleaded gy to extortion this past December. 1/6 suspect Nabil Shaheen pleadd guilty to extortion last month.
