good evening to you all tonight we're learning more about what led up to an Amber Alert for a 14 year old from Rochester that alert was put out last night and it was canceled today police say Joanna Coates left her home on the South Street on Saturday with 41 year old Robert Gonzalez they were found today in Brooklyn coach was unharmed Selena Louis Jones is live tonight from the teens home on LaSalle Street a lot of questions about this case Selena these two are on their way back to Rochester though right they are on their way back to Rochester and as you said this is Joanne's Joanna's a street it is also rubber Gonzalez's Street this house behind me here is Gonzalez's house our PD officers have been in and out in the last couple hours presumably beginning their investigation into how and why this all happened our PD is now beginning their investigation into why 14 year old Joanna Coates and her 41 year old neighbor Robert Gonzales made it all the way to Brooklyn together we believe there's some kind of relationship there they know each other we don't have enough detail right now now to go into exactly what the relationship was the level of the relationship we hope to flesh some of that out once we get her back to Rochester for now join his mom says Joanna is in the hospital police say she appears to be unharmed police wouldn't say though if Joanna went willingly with Gonzales but said they anticipate charging him with kidnapping Gonzales already had a prior warrant out for his arrest for an unrelated charge yeah that is solved third warrant out for him prior to this occurring and we're serving that warrant obviously now he's in custody on that there's potential for pending other charges against him when I spoke with Joanna's mom earlier she said that she's just happy that her daughter is back and safe and unharmed and she did say though that she wanted Gonzales prosecuted for kidnapping for this Maurine re Selena thank you according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children nearly 18,000 children go missing in New York State every year however not every missing child fits the criteria for an Amber Alert Christian Garzon explains discussing Joana Coates is successful location after an Amber Alerts commander Joel Morabito of the Rochester Police Department outlined what he says are these standards for a young person an accompanying situation to sound the alarm so under 17 years old they have to have some imminent potential for danger to them harm to themselves or possibly mental capacity that would make them in danger as well and they have to be you know taken against their will ed sook local representative from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says in any given calendar year New York state issues six to eight Amber Alerts the recent spike of alerts has been something of an anomaly says sook but he ensures they met the criteria and having those elements in place means more people pay attention to them and we need that we need the general public to really pay attention look at the three-way placards look at the crawl on the bottom of a TV screen because of the criteria enforced a success Amber Alerts are very successful florists were issued for every missing youngster they might quote go the way of the car alarm with people paying less and less attention Christian Garzon news 8 thanks Christian and for more information about Amber Alerts check out the link on our website at Rochester first camp just click on this story
