When there is an emergency or crisis  at or near a school the district has   an active emergency communication protocol  to notify affected families promptly.     Two procedures are used to protect staff  and students during an emergency. Families   will be notified under each scenario. A Secured Campus occurs when an outside   event, threat near the building, or an on-campus  incident requires security actions to take place. A Secured Campus is a preventative response to   rapidly enhance the level of  security within the building. During a Secured Campus, all building doors  are locked, and students and staff remain   in the building. Instruction in the classroom  continues as scheduled, and the school remains   in a heightened state of alertness and  security until the hazard has subsided. Following Secured Campus protocol, the  district or school will send a ConnectEd   message to all families by the end of the day. A Lockdown is a response to an emergency within   the building, on school grounds, or  immediate surroundings of the school. During a Lockdown, all building  doors are locked, instruction stops,   and all students and staff move into  areas of safety. Students and staff   will remain in lockdown until released  by police. In this case, the district   or school will send a ConnectEd message to all  families within 15 minutes of the Lockdown.   If school is canceled during an  ongoing emergency, the district   will contact families with information on  when and where to pick up their students. Families or emergency contacts need to bring  identification for student release and family   reunification. Please follow directions given in  the messages carefully, as family reunification   plans are created in conjunction with school and  local police to ensure the safety of students,   staff, and families. Schools conduct emergency   drills for Lockdowns, Secured Campus,  evacuations, and earthquakes. These   drills are designed to prepare students  and staff for responding to emergencies.   Families are encouraged to keep their  contact and emergency contact information,   including phone numbers current with  their child’s school to ensure they   receive all necessary information.    Students and families can help keep   our schools safe by reporting anything alarming  or suspicious to school police. This includes   reporting any suspicious activity you  might have viewed on social media. Please do not share or repost social media  posts, instead call school police so that threats   can be properly investigated. After school  hours, report threats to 911 or SafeVoice.   To notify police of any threats  against our schools or students:  Emergency 911. Non-emergency: 775-348-0285.  Secret Witness at 775-322-4900  or secretwitness.com.  SafeVoice: 833-216-SAFE or safevoicenv.org.   For active emergency updates,  visit www.washoeschools.net/alert
