guy to his players I'm cares about his players and go back to his players so I feel like it's not hard to go go give your all to a guy like you look at different position groups offense defense different players talking about the potential for breakout guys who who comes to your mind as guys we might be talking about that aren't really on the radar actually um Amari Campbell uh Jordan ship um DeAndre boin is coming off with ACL injury from last year I feel like a lot of people kind of forgot how big of a uh part he was to the defense so I feel like those those guys for sure what last season your snap total was among the highest in the ACC Coach Brown has talked about playing more players how much of a difference will that make late in the games and late in the season um well I proud myself on always being available for my teammates and being able to play a full game and not coming off the field so um you know that never has been really a factor for me but in terms of help help and health of the team I feel like it'll help a lot for sure especially like if we're um up up up on a team or you know we're in a situation where we trying to play keep away or stay up I feel like I understand like you know what I'm saying get some got young guys in there give them to play and let them develop and allow me to get some rest so you're not looking to get your snap title back no no sir but you went through it as a freshman kind of trying to find those spots to get snaps on defense so does that kind of help you communicate to them that they're going to find their spots and they may not be playing a whole lot now cuz you're on the field all the time but how to make the most of the snaps when they get those um I would say always staying ready because I remember it was a game my freshman year wa for gimo had got out in the first quarter for targeting and I came right in the game and I think I we won that game and they were like ranked like I think number 10 or nine in the country at that time and we won he got ejected right yeah he got ejected for targeting um it was a soft call honestly he should have got ejected but anyway I end up playing I end up having a pretty decent game but I always I would just tell them stay ready and prepare like if you're the starter obviously you're a local kid here from you know Chambers High School what do you you know what's your message to kids that say put yourself in your shoes back in high school that want to make it to you know the power four or whatever and make it you know going forward in football I would honestly tell them um put God first and work hard every day and be patient and Trust the process and know that um if you keep working every day good things are going to happen what is your favorite hype song My Favorite hype song I would say my favorite hype song Gotta rethink you put me on spot with that one there um hype song I would say that's a lot of options in my head um gez skrilla by uh Kodak do you have a pregame ritual um I would say my pregrant Mitchell is uh before every game I call my mom and we say in quick prayer and I would say that's one of my favorite ones what's the biggest difference that fans will see from this defense with Co Coach Collins as the coordinator Master Of Mayhem what does that mean um more aggression Master Of Mayhem describes him perfectly he's going to call it real aggressive call a real aggressive game um it play for our strengths and allow us to fly around and make a lot of plays well was it more B but not break last season last couple of Seasons if you noticed a different approach like you said more agressive um I would say it's just two different coordinators in the sense of two different identities so I feel like this year is more um more aggressive we're going to set the tempo and how how we going to dictate the game what indications have you seen in the spring and coming up to Camp that this defense is going to make big strides to you know come to the level that kind of fans have been looking for to l um I I feel like just in the sense of how comfortable we got in the middle of spring with all the calls and when we started calling them and just flying them out there um how well we executed them and how well it looked to him and the film played you talked earlier about being you know more vocal what some other leadership qualities that you've developed in your time maybe not only just Carolina but even in your time in high school that have you know helped you be more of that your vocal leader and what are some other leadership skills that you think you can bring to the team um well first to be be able to LED you have to follow so I feel like and i' I've had a lot of guys in front of me or that came before me I've always been the younger guy always in my uh career just a young guy looking up to the older guys being able to play up and seeing how they LED and I would always say like before I ask anybody to do something I'll would make sure I do it myself so um I'm not going to ask nobody to do something that I wouldn't do myself first um as coach or coach lindsy talk to you guys about how how this competition may work I mean are you guys going of you know one day you'll be with the ones the next day you'll be with ones have they have they kind of outline you know what they're looking for and how it's how it's going to play out L right Pap the scissors yeah we uh we I mean of course coach going to determine I guess you know who the starter is going to be but we usually switch off you know day in and day out who gets the ones and who gets the twos um so that's what we kind of did in Spring and we'll we'll see where that goes in talk how the dynamic change with Kobe coming in since it's yeah I think um it came in for you know I mean that's just part of the game and Coach Lindsay brought them in for a reason so to Coach Brown I have a good relationship with him um I'm sure everyone's going to get reps so I'm looking forward to you know kind of seeing the dynamic of fall C and how it goes I was waiting for you to guys for follow so goad how much does having a guy like Omarian just kind of take a little bit of no a lot of pressure off either one of you guys yeah I mean I I I think in order to have a good team you got to be good in everything very as so good receivers a good running back good tight ends um having a guard having a guard everything having worryed about everything it's hard to it's hard to stop so we machine that tight end room you know obviously very productive last year um now your brothers in there what what can you talk about what that room brings to your offense and how maybe you can utilize more than one or more than two of those guys at the same time I think that it's important that guys aren't playing tired and and that's a huge thing if we have multiple ends you know we can utilize one in this part of the game utilize one in the other part of the game but also like if one's tired if one's Gass you know we can keep them fresh and that's that that's a huge part of the game good JJ I know you guys are both leaders on the team how would you guys describe your leadership styles you guys think it's kind of alike or you more of a vocal leader or you more of an action kind of guy I think for me um I've been able to do both I've had to you can't come in as a transfer and just start vocally leading without earning people's respect so I think when I first got here I had to earn people's Respect by the way I you know the way I work the way I put my head down and just um did things I think I've opened up more as a vocal leader since I've been here I think I've been a vocal leader everywhere else I've been um I think that's you know I'm continuing to open up as a vocal leader uh here and it's been really good just cuz you know I had to I had to earn everybody's respect you can't come in here and just start talking and you know people don't know what you're about yeah I'd say I've definitely grown a lot as a vocal leader uh being behind Drake you know he he he's a l of the team he's a guy so that's been a big 20 emphasis this year is open up my mouth and talking to people I know I can affect a lot of people in a positive way especially freshman coming in don't exactly know the landscape so I'll trying to make that a focal point what's it like doing these interviews together is this your guys's idea to do a CO interview like this we had no idea this is kind of just we're going on the Fly and going with it so both of you guys have dealt with being the backup as well as jacobe how is that helpful for you guys going can I mean I think it's just being able to learn from people and learn from uh people's experiences success failures like we were saying um it's it's a part of football but of course you know we both want to be the starter and that's what we're working towards i' like to go back to the question he asked about being at the same table here is it is it is it awkward is it is it I mean is it weird is it I mean what's going how's going through your mind I'd say we like I said before we this is not our first like conversation we talk all the time and we around each other all the time so like I I don't think it's weird at all what were you guys' first reactions to jacobe coming in you know he had been here too andway you probably already knew him right yeah yeah so I was a freshman he was here learned a lot from him I was surprised at first but Kobe was a great guy and we super glad to have him back um as more competition and competition is healthy makes you better so max I mean you're the transfer coming in I mean it has it's human to kind of be like the guys coming in here like I got to beat out I mean did you have a human moment like that yeah of course I mean but I also had you know conversations with you know coach Lindsay and our coaches about everything and um it's it's a part of football it's a part of you know competing for a job um and I've done that for four years straight and I've been through battles and um I think it's just a part of your journey along those lines guys like with jacobe coming in did you at all take that to be like wow we didn't do enough during the Spring you know what I mean that they had to go out and get somebody else for for for position I mean I think an important part about playing playing the sport playing the position is is not really worrying about you know all the stuff that comes because there's going to be challenges and things if you if you constantly worrying about things you can't control like that's Co becoming is something we couldn't control so I mean worrying about that is is only is not conducive to to playing well not conducive to being the best person you can be so did you did you take that Max as like I didn't do enough this spring they had to go to the portal again no I wouldn't say that I think it's just a part of football I think that um everybody came in we we have he's coming in for death purposes I mean whoever it is um but I I think it's just a part of football learning and um yeah that's what I say got here to UNC and so you know with him like with said passing into TS to him officially man I feel like that just really just gave him the keys to continue what he's doing if not more and I'm really excited to see how he's going to have more of a productive year this year than he did in the past what went into deciding on this Ensemble say it again what went into deciding on this Ensemble you're wearing um especially the glasses I mean this is something that um I just had a vision in um Conor Herold D um Marvin Herold he actually um um he actually tailored suits and things of that nature and um he actually designed this for me so he saw my vision and he made it happen so shout out to him he's the one that really put this piece together so can we get a breakdown cuz I can't see you shoes Okay um so this is pinstripe from from the jacket down white undershirt um we got a too watch right here twoone okay uh just a little just a little um diamond necklace right here and I actually have um kind of like a light brown um pointy to um loafer right here what about the frames um I'm be honest I got them off Amazon cuz I'm spending that type of money energy um so you know um you know I can still style and profile with have it spend a whole bunch of money so this the most ensive thing on me is my actual suit but besides that yeah that's pretty much a break now to go for being a AC team to a a title Contender team in the league where do that approv have to come from say that question one more time to go from being a 4 and four ACC team like we were last year to contending for the title where does that Improvement have to come from how does that team get um I think it's a team thing honestly I feel like just all across the board we have to make sure that we got to take care of business on both sides so for us it's just like we lacked aggression in the past so now we got aggression now we got to make sure not only do we have this aggression but we have to make sure we communicate with this aggressions now like if we're going to be handed the keys to the um to the car then we got to be we got to know we got to be trusted that we can drive it now and the same thing with offense the same thing we got to we got to communicate heavily there's a lot of different ways to where like um even with amaran even though he was one of our work forces last year we got to spread the load across everybody else but I know it starts up front and I know the o line has gotten a lot better I'm really excited to see how they're going to progress this year but um I just like on both sides of the ball in order for this in order for this to keep rolling man we got to understand like we have to work together at this and I feel like we can genuinely achieve that from being a forign four in the ACC to a championship contending C team you played a lot of snaps last year a lot a lot of guys played a lot of snaps and Coach Brown has talked about trying to play more people so you don't have to play as many do you think that was a factor late in games and also late in the season uh for you guys and will that help yeah I feel like um there's a lot of different instances where we should have played a lot more guys um I mean I know I played a lot of snaps but there was a lot of guys that were um alongside with me that could have played a lot more as well um but I know a lot of your better teams have teams that can roll in deep or it's like two three rows deep and so with us we have to also adopt that as well because we can't go if we can't have the season we can't make it as long as the season as as long as we make it and play the same guys over and over and over we have to have guys that we can r on and so I feel like with Coach really taking that ownership and understanding like hey we need to play more guys but that also puts an accountability on us to understand the plays like if we are going to play guys we're going to roll in like two three um um depth deep then you have to know your plays as well you have to know what you got going on because if you don't know what you're doing then we can't trust you so we have to also have that sense of accountability me holding my position group and other people on the defense accountable so they can play so they can also play and it gives me a breather and vice versa for whoever else is in switching from 25 to number seven this year what went into that decision and um kind of the connection with your father yeah so um seven has always been a number that I've enjoyed um I know I remember wearing seven my junior year of high school and um due to like a cultural thing that my high school had I switched to number one but um seven is always something that I've wanted in college but obviously due to the fact that I was underclassman and of course D lineman they don't really get a lot of single numbers um I waited my turn and got 25 and um what got into it is just like um I know when I chose seven in high school um my dad when he first started playing football his first number was 75 and um that was the whole reason I wanted to play in like in honor of my dad and so it was just like you know I either had to choose five or seven and I like seven better and they they handle players but they're not doing exactly what they're supposed to do so we think that that's one we've gone back and looked at every penalty most penalties are either holding on offense or defense or pass interference on offense or defense during the game so we've said you've got to cut out all pre- snap penalties and you've got to cut out all post Snap or post whistle penalties so don't have any pushing and shoving and late hits and don't have motion penalties and Alignment issues and so cut out all those and then limit the hold so we've taken every hold we had last year and and we put it on video and show them why to hold it and then we' started challenging our defensive BL Crea don't gripe about being hell you've got to make it so obvious that the official can see it and throw the flag cuz he's got a lot going on so that that's one thing clean up the disciplines clean up the little things and that'll help us the second thing we got to do is play more players if you you get hurt at the end of the year you get tired at the end of the year we play two linebackers they play 900 snaps they're worn out at the end of the year they're good players and then if one of them gets hurt we don't have anybody play so we've got to play more players we've said it for 5 years we haven't done it we got to do it and that's one thing Jeff Collins is really committed to doing and we got to have enough guts to put them in you coaches are so afraid to lose they're they're they don't want to put the the backup in well you number one then they transfer because they're not playing morale is bad you're more likely to get hurt when you're tired and then you can't put your starters on special teams because they're tired and your special teams aren't as good so we think all of those things can improve uh because of those those three changes you just mentioned uh coachs ABC I I knew Jeff from being in TV I did his Temple Games a number of those and then coaching against him at George of tech he's he's got high energy he's a a guy that pulls everybody together he's had success at the highest levels as a defensive coordinator uh at both Mississippi State and at Florida on our level he did a great job at at Temple he had a tough transition with Georgia Tech because Paul did a great job there but it was totally different to come in and follow the wishbone team um and he recruited well they've got good players right now so when we were on a an interview with him he watched every game he knew what our our players had done during the season he knew the players he knew them by name he wanted all the coaches in the inter VI and he would say Tommy thigpin linebacker coach in the West Virginia game this happened and I think you can do this better and he said I'm not I'm just telling you what I see got really good players you got are doing a great job coaching you're so close but a few tweaks uh Charlton Warren your safety came on the blitz in the West Virginia game but he came too flat and that would have been a two-point play for you with a safety and then they punt to us instead it's a a 90 yard touchdown at the other end um and he said I want to look very complicated and be simple but I want to create chaos and and and the kids just love him I've seen him a receiver will catch a ball on the other side of the field he'll Sprint across the field he'll chest bump the receiver he'll say that's great man that's what we need you're killing our defense and that helps us then he'll turn the defensive back and say what are you doing you're the one supposed to stop so so he's fun he's fun and I'm I'm excited about getting started next week with him back you told that story about Coach bow and purpose and mortality I mean is that where your head's at too just thinking about your own mortality your legacy purpose I don't care about my legacy cuz it's already there I mean I've been doing this a long time so that that doesn't matter to me uh in fact I'm in such a great place it's not about me so that's good it's healthy um and I I I wouldn't stay too long in my mind I'll know when it's best for me to quit more than anybody else every time you l L everybody want you to quit at my age I got that understand if you're young they sure want you to quit cuz they don't want you to be around any longer uh so I got that but as long as I'm being effective and having fun and love this stuff I I want to keep doing it because probably the next time that I quit will be the last time I'll coach cuz I doubt if I'll do it again I when I quit before I was 67 or something maybe and and I called Dick verm and I said what what do you do cuz he stayed out 16 years in came back and won a Super Bowl and he said don't ever say you're not going to coach again CU coaches coach and you don't know that you might not and you don't want to be a liar so I always said I don't know and I didn't and right now every recruit that comes in the first thing you wants to know are you going to quit because every coach recruiting against us says I'm going to quit and six of them have been fired that said that already so they ought to be worried more about themselves and then Coach Elco said I'll be at Duke longer ma will be at Carolina well I called him when he TR when he went out to A&M and said okay you lied he said well I didn't think I was going to I said yeah I got it I hear all that um and then the second thing they ask is how much nil money do I get so that's my new recruiting uh visits when I have but um I'm I'm lucky I'm I'm healthy I've got lots of energy I'm having so much fun and how many people get to change kids' lives every day of their life I mean it's just amazing I have to be careful of what I say to them because they listen and if you're older you've got experience and it's a really good thing because I've seen most things happen in college football with kids and so I I know how to handle it um the only problem is when you don't have energy if you can't hang in there with the energy then you shouldn't be coaching at my age but if you if you've got the experience and you're passionate about it and you love it and you still got the energy I I think it's a cool thing back when when Jacobi hit the transfer portal who made the first Contact was it him or or your coaching staff why did you feel that you wanted to bring him in he would have to answer that but I he and John copenh are so close I think during Co they stayed together at John's house for like three months or two months whatever that period of time was we didn't get to be together um so we started hearing that jacobe would be interested just from the players and and then when he was in the portal we called and he said absolutely and then he had choices and I said uh I want you to come on a visit I want you to sit down with with Coach Christensen and I want you to sit down with Coach Lindsay and I want you to be around the players I want you to be around me again I want you to start over because it's very unusual for somebody to come back to the same place they left and when he got back he said I wish I hadn't left I'd probably be the starting quarterback if I'd stayed none of that matters I started here I want to finish here and his dad even asked me what would you do if was my son I said I don't know cuz he's Miss spring practice we've got two good quarterbacks I can't answer that I said I want him to come because we've got another very talented quarterback that's experienced that's sitting there so when we say we don't have a quarterback we've really got three and all three can play so I'm excited about it what we've got to do is a great job of separating them between now and game time to to make sure that we get the right one on the field Mac what's the the most challenging thing from a coaching standpoint about a quarterback competition like this a time how do you practice them and how do you practice three and since jacobe missed spring do you let him get in the mix with the other two or do you have it at two-man race with jacobe hanging in there but when we we were breaking down practice situations yesterday we've got to put them in as many game type situations as we can and then we've got to show them you've got to do these five things to be our quarterback and you've got to do these five things better than the other guy and then every day we have to tell them you you held the ball too long um you you you took quarterback sacks you didn't take if an offensive lineman misses I got that you threw an interception you can't do that you got to protect the ball you got to make good decisions so we've got to make it very clear here's what you have to do to be the starter and then we've got to grade them heart every day and put them in positions where they have to be able to handle those things not necessarily these guys but how much of a concern is it especially in the current landscape is when you pick one as a starter the other guy decides you know what I'm going to go someplace else and take my chances and go into the portal yeah they can't do that now until J until December okay so they got it stick it out it's changed before they could leave till a school started yeah they can't anymore so people used to say well you're holding the decision cuz you don't want them to transfer that doesn't matter they can't transfer anyone would you consider sharing game snaps and have you ever done that as a coach I've done it quite a bit and it's worked every time I've done it and you don't consider it at this time because you want to have a starting quarterback what you do is you consider it if you can't choose between the two and you feel like both are good enough um then I I think it's a luxury because they're different and and who they are and what they do and if you can make it work for your offensive line then it it puts more pressure on the defense but we did it with Mike Thomas and Jason Stanis here we did it with uh uh Chris korf and Oscar Davenport here we did it with Major Applewhite Chris Sims at Texas we did it with chance Mock and Vince Young at Texas and then the one that took off ended up being the starter well Marian said he wants to develop into more of a complete player versatile catching the ball he said use Chris mcaffrey as an example are you seeing any Improvement in that area um of his game and I really have I think he's already there yeah he can catch he can block he he he can run he's very unselfish I I do feel like what we need to do with him um Caleb Hood got hurt last year British Brook sprained an ankle so I wouldn't let him come out of the game it was my fault poor Larry Porter would be saying okay om Mari and I said ah ah leave him in he said we're at the 20 I said so he can go 80 the rest of them can't so so we've got to be a able to share snaps with with other running backs and I and I believe we've got some we've got Caleb Hood we we've got Darwin Barlo we've got uh Davon gos we've got some new faces that I think will really help us well you going have to talk to him cuz he said he wants to run for 2,000 yards he does I'm I'm with him we'll have to talk to Larry hey coach so you always have a look of determination in your eyes but it's a little different this year and I can't quite pinpoint it that's why I've been like staring in your eyes so much but what do you think think with the changes you are making that you went over a few minutes ago do you think that's what it's going to take to bring the trophy back home to Chapel Hill yeah when we were we 9 and one two years ago and didn't finish I thought well we just didn't finish well right and so let's change a few things last year 6 and0 10th in the country and we got worse so it's it's a problem it's an issue and it's the only thing that's keeping us from being where we need to be right so I'm so excited about fixing it and and that's what's got me pumped up I love it thank you we got more depth finally um we we've been inconsistent at best on defense we've been inconsistent the kicking game I feel like we're going to be better on both of those we'll be different on offense but the quarterbacks are good we've got really good players around them so I'm I'm pumped it's on us it's on us to helpful more guys coach um what are the challenges as a coach with Playmore guys is it more teaching is it more bit more more patience more in game man the chall it's a great question and and what I've told the guys the other day is how many can you coach how many can you get ready to play how many can you get in shape uh and that's a great question like at linebacker we've got two do we need four or do we need five and do you have four with a fifth ready so that's what the how many running backs can you play how many receivers can you play cuz we've got 13 that can probably play and we've told them you all have to separate yourselves by by showing us that you're going to be better than the other guy before we can separate you you were saying just now it's the only thing you need to to fix to get to where you want to be or were you referring to there uh November end of the season and why because we we're obviously in shape to start the season we've been great the early parts of the Season we have not been good at the end every team I've ever coached has been good at the end and we got to figure out the bowl game cuz we've never lost four in a row and our best players aren't playing in the bowl games anymore so by playing more players you're going to have somebody more ready to play when those guys opt out if they still opt out so those are all things that we're looking atach sure this year that that's actually going to happen talk about for 5 years wanting to play more players how do you ensure when games are getting tight November and October and November that you're actually following through with that is that's something that you uh it's it's happened at certain positions it just hadn't happened at all of it needs to happen at all of them I now have a defensive coordinator that totally agrees with me and he's going to make it happen and when you script them going in it keeps it from being the coach's decision when he gets nervous if you say this group is going in the third series if you're not inside either 20 we're putting this group in then they go in and and he can't stop them because coaches want to win and they're all paranoid and and they're all worried about every little thing that happens so I've got to help them with that I've got to make them declare what they're doing tell the kid what they're doing and then they have to do itach you repl a handful of starters up front but you added some transfers and you got a group that you like can you talk about what you see from that group as you get ready to go into PA camp and also what does having a running back like as special as a Maran do to kind of smooth things out while you get that group Jo together great running backs make offensive line look better that's right it's 100% and I've seen it way too many times but you you take Austin blaski he's played in Georgia and he's played a lot and he's really a tough good football player you take Willie lamp he was one of our best lineman last year and very confident and then you take U Howard Samson at 68 325 330 and he can move his feet I think he'll be an NFL player before he gets through trayon green has really come on he's 68 360 big man we were trying to get him 345 we near killed him and his body mass says he needs to be 360 so we're going to leave him in 360 and then you bring in um the transfer from Georgia Tech jakai Le he's 66335 so we're bigger we're stronger we bring in a guy from a division three program that Jeff Greenberg that we're really impressed with and he can play backup center or guard if he's good enough at Center you can move uh blasy to guard um so I I just we we looked at it yesterday I think we have nine that have a chance to play and we've been playing with seven so we're just we're just finally getting some more dep coach you talked to me about um having that relationship with a night I'm curious do you still keep up with guys like mcoy and Jordan Shipley absolutely I talked to all the time and it's usually more text than talk if they they'll check in if they like after today I've got text with them here today said I've heard that before or something picking at me um but but absolutely I'm text with them all I know their birthdays and their anniversaries and that's just that's one of the joys of my life is to have a family that big back you guys haven't W the ACC since 198 MC state has been since 79 why do you think for both of those two the two biggest ACC F MC State why has it been such a struggle to break uh because Florida State's been better than the rest of us for most of the years that I was here and Clemson's been better than most of us before and after that and wake and Duke have done it but once so um we need to do better I think that's important for us we want to win a championship it's probably harder now than it was back then when you added all the new teams um but it it's still it's it's there for us to do we had our chance two years ago it kind of feels like you and state especially take turns G like it team in the preseason they're getting some hyp this year you guys have gotten in the past couple years does that play into it in terms of you know expectations maybe getting in your head a little bit not R into no it's a good question you all create expectations we don't so I mean when you look at it I like where we are now and we had no expectations when Drake became the quarterback there was no buzz and we weren't going to be any good and won nine out of the first 10 so um so I I I do I do feel like we handled expectations better in Texas and seem to have expected it there we handled them better here at the end because we were always up up there our team hasn't handled them that well and it really bothers me and I we've got to get where we need to go and then we got to win when we get there to expect us to to be good enough to be there and we haven't done that yet isaach what's kind of kept you around you kind of feel like unfinished business is that kind of help motivate you to stick around there's a number of things that keep me around is as I love the kids and I I don't want to let them down and walk away from them I love the game I'm so excited about Sunday H how when the kids report how many people love their job so much that they can't sleep because they can't wait till it starts I mean that that's that's telling right there and and then I also want to help college football there's a lot of things that we got to fix and I want to help Carolina while we're going through these transition because not many of those things that happened have been great for us and I and I want us to get where we need to be uh while I'm here so coach one thing um when you were just speaking talking about like Jordan Shipley so one of your former players back in the 90s will be inducted very soon will you be going to oh um Canton to see Julius Peppers get inducted and do yall still take stay in touch yes we we we do I can't go to C cuz we'll be practicing fair enough but I will go to Las Vegas for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame okay he may be the only one that's ever gone into both hall of fames the same year it's unbelievable really I mean yeah I mean it's unbelievable that he's done that yes and he's starting to help us with nil okay I want him to come back around our players because he's one of the best ever play if not the best at that position and I want our guys to get to know him and be around him I was inducted in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame with him a couple years ago I remember that yeah so uh and and I'm I'm sending Brian Simmons in my place okay uh along with Dwight haer because they both know him and Brian played with him so they're going up to Canton and then Sally and I will go to Las Vegas now do you know if his um partner in crime Jesse Holly will be at either induction some I do not I don't know who's going yet all right sorry just let i' ask back the last couple years you've been blessed with quarterback play that has been the talk of your team you got a a decision to make this year and youve got amarian now Marian in my guess would be the focal point of defenses going forward so how do you prepare an offense where it isn't necessarily quarterback you could say that we were blessed or you could say that we did a great job recruiting and coaching two of these quarterbacks to get them in that position it's all a matter of perspective right to be fair absolutely to be fair Mark Packer just told me to tell you all when you ask who the starting quarterback is you'll know when we break the Huddle at the first game I said thank you Mark I'm going to give you credit for that with every media person that ask me um and and absolutely defenses will be focusing on on the mark they'll stack the box but it helps your quarter batch makes the passing game simpler when they got too many around the line of scrimmage and and we've got to be smart with it we've got to spread things out enough cuz we got good enough receivers we got good enough tight ends that they can't just focus on a market and then what we've got to do is figure out is it Max is it Connor is it jacobe and what do they do best are they better with play action is it better to protect with play action with Omarian back there what are his best runs cuz we had great running backs with with Michael Carter and Javonte Williams and we still had Sam but we ran the ball better then than we've been able to uh the previous year then last year we got it back to it again so um I'm excited about us running the ball better and more us having fewer sacks and all of that's going to help our defense too so sometimes with all the hype at quarterback they talk so much about quarterback that the rest of the team feels like we're good Drake will take it there and and that's not the case we've all got to play and now I think the pressure is on the team and the coach to play it's not just on Dr a lot of folks are a lot of the guys are saying we got to chip on our shoulder it's personal we we didn't hold up as much as we needed to last year how much of that is coming from the players and how much are you crediting Coach Collins kind of instilling maybe a different type of demeanor uh I tell them every day that we we haven't we've done great things compared to the two wins and the three wins and we haven't lived up to our expectations much less our families so they should have a chip on their shoulder and I said you you've done some really good things and I went through it your academics are good your pro guys are good you've won you NC state are the second most wins in ACC games in 5 years that's all good you don't get credit for any of but it's all good but you're not going to get credit till you win a championship you're not going to get credit till you finish and that's the way the the world is now so um grow up keep your mouth shut and and play better coach you talked a lot about the receivers you got a lot that you could pick from one of them was just from right down the road that you recruited really hard in Jordan ship can you talk a little about his growth in the spring and just what he's been doing to get up to the speed of the college game yeah I'm I'm very excited about not only uh Jordan ship but Vari green and Alex Taylor with with those young ones and then you've got the Christian Hamilton and the Chris cullers that haven't played very much either so we we've got our older group with Nate McCullum and JJ Jones and and um um Kobe U PES and then you've got some other guys that are really good that that have played some uh but you've got to have the older guys run the show and the younger ones grow up but Jordan's got tremendous hands he runs very good routes um and he's a lot like JJ and he's got to learn from JJ how does playoff expansion help a program like North Carol I think Jeff it helps everybody cuz everybody wants to be in it it's it's a new goal and now you what what happens with bows I don't know I'm worried about bows and the large majority of the teams that are playing can't get in the playoffs so they've got to have the bowls as a reward at the end of the year we want to be one of those teams that's it's not only want to be in the playoff but win a National Championship we're we're one of the few teams one of the 10 20 that have won so many games 700 games or something as a program and never won a national championship football so we'd like to do that what are some of the positives and negatives about going to 105 scholarships the um I don't know the positives because I haven't heard uh exactly why I'm sure it's probably to save money but I don't know why adding scholarship saves money like that um I'm really concerned that if this passes like we're hearing it will that we're going to have uh 35 young people that walked on that will no longer be able to be on our team and that that's not what I like I'd rather see that grandfather den and the guys that are currently on your team until maybe they don't want Walk-Ons in the future at least they will not have made decisions to go to your school and then can't play so I'd rather see it grandfathered in so those guys can graduate and maybe the structure changes going in for the future think you it likely will mean more chaos in the portal so as tough as Rost management is now hard I would think probably so because it's going to be harder to get 100 really good players on a scholarship and you're going to have 15 more on 20 more on scholarship that expect to play where the Walk-Ons don't have the same expectation so there's absolutely no doubt that those 20 are going to come to play so that now you've got 11 spots for 105 instead of 85 all righty thanks coach
