what an absolutely weird wild and wacky weekend there's some alliteration for you weekend of college football just when you think you have an understanding of you know four or five playoff teams teams that you know we think we can pencil into the 12 team playoff colell has a weekend like it did this past weekend and all of a sudden we're left wondering what to expect from all of these top teams and really who are the good teams in college football I think that is a key question mark coming out of this past weekend and I'll get into that a little bit later but truly a exhilarating weekend of college football the headliner the biggest game of the weekend was Prett pretty much the one game that did not deliver it was the most disappointing game of the weekend and I put that up on our little graphic that we do every week recapping week two post those on Sunday mornings uh you can follow us on the uh on Instagram at lock in sports pod that's where I post those also on Twitter locked in sports pod or locked in sports zero um please like rate review share the podcast let us know how we're doing uh if you got a friend um that loves college football send him this podcast send them send us um their way we really appreciate you appreciate you listening thanks for tuning in to this pod Joe is still traveling I think he's getting back tomorrow but wanted to get this week two recap out to you guys before he returns so for the week three podcast Joe will absolutely be back on the mic and we'll be chopping it up previewing week three but for today we are recapping week two like I said an absolutely wild week of college football um a great upset a a top 10 matchup uh and some really other good games um I think we learned a lot this week but I also think there's a lot of question marks coming out of this week um which you know week three will help us learn more but week two was quite interesting let's start with the big one it was Michigan Texas it was a top 10 matchup in an arbor and Texas wins 31-2 it really felt like Texas won by 40 points you know not 19 uh it truly felt like they won by a lot more and that's coming from a Michigan uh fan perspective um Quin E I mean Quint eers 246 yards passing three touchdowns what only through I mean he's 24 for 36 he felt like he was in control of this game from start to finish it felt like he was doing what he wanted with the Michigan defense uh and it felt like the Michigan defense did not have any answers for this Texas offense now it really felt like Texas did to Michigan what Michigan has been doing to teams for the past three seasons control the time of possession establish the Run game and stifling defense the stifling defense was the surprising one from Texas and I think you know a lot of that was was the ineptitude of the Michigan offense you know undeniably um but I think Texas established themselves in this game winning in the big house pretty much sucking the life out of that place in in the second quarter when they go into into halftime 24 to three it was it was over you know and a lot of people left at halftime um they established themselves as one of the elite teams in college football and it it's starting to feel like there are three Elite teams in the sport this year and then a a a pretty sizable drop off now we haven't seen teams like ol Miss uh and like Missouri play play top ranked opponents just yet I mean we haven't seen Ohio State uh do do so either but Texas undeniably established themselves at as a playoff team they have a favorable SEC schedule the only really challenging game is obviously Georgia at home in October they do travel to A&M to wrap up the season other than that I mean you have Red River of course against Oklahoma in a neutral cider but Oklahoma look questionable this weekend Texas looks like they are a a Bonafide playoff team 256 yards passing 143 yards rushing they ran a very uptempo offense because they knew that Michigan's defense under new defensive coordinator Wick Martell is nowhere near as deep as it was last year Michigan's too deep last season was good the the second unit was good enough to to be a starting unit for Michigan this season um and and now a lot of those guys obviously on uh that were starters last year even some of the guys in the two deep from last year they're gone and Michigan is very thin on on defense or they're going to have to rely on some guys uh to develop over this season that have not played much but Texas knew that they knew that Michigan isn't going to be able to rotate guys in into that defense the way they did last year and they exposed it and they ran a very uptempo offense especially to start the game and they wore that Michigan defense down and Michigan's offense was playing into the hands of that game plan for Texas because they Michigan's offense could not stay on the field it was a lot of three and outs maybe one first down and then punt uh a lot of you know boneheaded turnovers Davis Warren threw two interceptions Coulson leveland had that really bad fumble and Michigan beat themselves on offense they were never able to establish any type of identity no Run game uh Davis Warden you know I will say the last very last Drive of the game he looked okay but but outside of that very disappointing game from him and Michigan's defense was on the field the entire game Texas Texas was just dominant and I and I think you know if you're a Michigan fan as I am you're worried that is this going to go back to what it was before Harbaugh or in the middle of the Harbaugh era where team you know the team was going eight and4 you know nine and three there were some struggles you know are they going to fall back into the middle of the pack of the Big 10 or or is Texas just that good is Texas going to win the national championship this year that you know Coen he very well could be the fource quarterback taken in this year's NFL Draft um I I think he you know there was a ton of NFL scouts at this game this past weekend ESPN kept talking about that on Game Day Pete th kept tweeting it out there were a lot of Scouts there I don't know how you couldn't have loved what you saw from Quin he was calm cool collected in a hostile environment on the road and he just picked aart that Michigan defense um if you're a Michigan fan you might be worried that you know you're falling back into the prear eras now I I want to say Ron Moore it's a second game coaching he did get absolutely out coached in this game had no answers for what Texas game planned but Texas could just be that good so I think if you're Michigan this is obviously a very disappointing loss The Season's not over but you're going to need to figure out what you're doing on offense moving forward is Davis Warren going to be the guy you know the the the thing that really disappointed me on offense was that the Alex orgy um package that they had the whole universe knows that org is not going to throw the football and you bring him in for like third and short fourth and short situations when Texas obviously knows that all he does is run I think they run the ball like 90% of Alex orgy snaps stuffed every every single time it didn't work and then when you're you know you're down 31 to three or whatever it was 31 to6 in garbage time and Davis Warren is still out there getting reps why not give orgy a drive see what he can do sling The Rock maybe even throw in Jaden uh Davis the true freshman quarterback that you know was a highly tied to recruit give him a chance like why is is Davis Warren still getting reps when when the game is over I hope next weekend against Arkansas state that Michigan can establish a big enough lead to wear guys like orgy and maybe even a Davis can get reps at quarterback so they you know I I know the coaches see it in in in practice and everything but see it in a game situation you know um all of a sudden that USC game on the 21st of September a couple weeks from from Saturday looks like a daunting task USC had another huge win you know it was Utah State but they won I think it was like 48 to to zero you know USC is looking like all of a sudden the maybe potentially the second best team in the conference all of a sudden a game that you thought would you know be somewhat of a test but probably a win all of a sudden that game is a is a very much in question um you know and and and in the Oregon game later uh in the season November 2nd with the way Oregon's been playing now there's a lot of time for them to get it together between now and then but that Oregon game could maybe be um Michigan could have a better chance to win that game than they do the USC game USC right now they're up to 11th in the country they look like one of the best teams in the Big 10 maybe even the second best team in the Big 10 the way Oregon's playing the way Penn State looked this weekend struggling against Bowling Green only winning that game by 10 it was close in the fourth quarter um so Michigan ton of question marks uh and and you know when when you lose JJ McCarthy to the NFL there's obviously going to be a drop off um it's shocking to see a national title a national champion team come back in their next season and and their def ending their title with with uh a former walkon Davis Warren at at quarterback it's it's it's it's concerning um sh got out coached and uh hats off to Texas great game they're they're going to a great win for them they're going to be um in the playoff hunt in in the playoff for sure um fighting for a national championship so Michigan has a lot of development to do um between now and the end of the season uh you know and there's not much time between now and USC there's one one game um before you get what could end up being a top 10 team again coming into an arbor so interesting times uh for Michigan they got a lot to figure out like I said all right let's talk about what I you know the most exciting game of the weekend the game that took a little of of the heat a little bit of the heat off of Michigan you know Michigan was obviously uh got spanked at home and you know you're thinking Michigan's going to get uh the most slander you know the hardest time in the media this week and Notre Dame said hold night beer they lose 16-4 at home against Northern Illinois the Huskies get it done crazy game I would say the second half was was was boring you know Notre Dame only scored a touchdown and then NIU hit the hit the field goal to win it was not an exciting game um but it was it was one of those games that obviously you know as as a college football fan as a sports fan you always root for the the David versus the Goliath right not NIU 28 point underdogs in this spot and they scored an early touchdown to go up I think by like three four points you're like okay like let's let's flag this NIU game and and and you keep watching it's like Notre Dame hasn't scored they're still they're down at half you know they score a touchdown in the third quarter to go up but it was still very much a game they Notre Dame was was not moving the football on NIU really whatsoever they were in a lot of third and long situations Riley Leonard and that was my biggest concern for for Notre Dame coming out of that Texas A&M game where yes they won it took them a while to establish the running running game and Riley Leonard did not look that great in that game he didn't make a ton of passes and it's like okay well you can use these NIU games you know the easy schedule that they had until they played really USC at the end of the season you know people were peny Notre Dame as a playoff team and I said I I I mentioned I thought that they they it is Notre Dame they have a slip up in them I did not think it was going to be NIU and and and they go down NIU kicks the game-winning field goal by the way that that game-winning field goal should have been a buzzer beater um they kind of got robbed on that third down call where it was very clearly a third down they just couldn't the officials had a really bad spot and um you know they they couldn't overturn it because they could not see the ball actually crossing the plane so Notre Dame really should not have even had the ball um that's neither here nor there Notre Dame didn't even get close with the game-winning kick but if you're an Notre Dame fan this is got to be one of the most painful losses in recent memory I mean you obviously you come off that huge win against A&M you're looking like a playoff team the schedule is an absolute Cakewalk and and you go down to NIU now obviously credit to NIU they played a great game um um antario Brown had 99 yards rushing Gavin Williams 59 yards rushing uh the the touchdown pass was great antario Brown um two yard two receptions 126 yards and a touchdown uh that was really the one play I think that won them the game their touchdown in the first quarter and again from a Notre Dame perspective I think you can write them out of the playoff at this point because this is where not being in a confence could come back to hurt them the most they don't have any games you know they're not playing an SEC schedule they're not playing a big 10 schedule they don't really have many opportunities to make up for this loss you know an Ohio State theoretically or a Georgia could could overcome a loss to NIU at home as bad as as bad as it is if you run the table in the Big 10 or the SEC you're still making the playoff with this loss Notre Dame schedule the rest of the way and I can read it to you guys um because I truly think none of winning any of these games you know even if they run the table I don't know if they get back in next weekend it's at Purdue Purdue is you know we don't know much about them yet they haven't played anybody Miami of Ohio at home which is another tough Mac team they could go down in that game I don't know prob probably not probably not Louisville at home tough I mean we don't know much about Louisville yet but they're currently ranked 19th I haven't played anybody yet Stanford at home Georgia Tech neutral sight game in Atlanta Navy neutral sight game I think that one's um at MetLife Florida State at home UVA at home army they play them at Yankee Stadium and they wrap up the season at USC now if USC's a undefeated top five team at that point in the season and Notre Dame gets a win there maybe it's going to depend on what happens around Notre Dame and those teams that are going to be in that at this point8 to 12 range right we don't know about what that picture is going to look like just yet but Notre is probably out of the playoff at this point with this NIU loss they just don't have as many opportunities to get back into the conversation they're gonna need Louisville to be good they're gonna need Florida State to have a Resurgence and they're gonna need USC to be a top 10 team by the end of the season uh I don't know if they're like I don't know if you Notre Dame is good though good enough to be a playoff team like they could theoretically slip up in another one of these games you know Riley Leonard looked terrible I mean the pick that he threw at the end of the game just an under throw you know the the the safety easily jumped it and and that set up the the game-winning Drive the game-winning field goal for NIU so Riley Leonard's gonna have to continue to develop as a passer um and you know I like the running game but they they weren't the the offensive line is Young and inexperienced and they weren't able to move the football against Northern Illinois now Northern Illinois is now ranked 25th they they maybe have established themselves as as the favorite in the Mac you know it was really heading into the season it was the conversation of Miami of Ohio and Toledo as the two teams that were the class of the Mac I clearly NIU has moved into that conversation um and they're you know the beauty of this new 12 team playoff is NIU is in the playoff contention spot for that uh for that g G5 slot uh so truly truly crazy game one of those games that just like again makes you like fall in love with the sport of college football the NFL cannot replicate NIU knocking off Notre Dame at home you know 28 point Underdog they're not even in the same class of like of the sport as Notre Dame is Notre Dame is a top five team it just doesn't happen in the NFL it's what makes the sport so special uh it's it's Tru you live for those crazy upsets right that's what you remember the most about college football and and you know when you're thinking of Seasons 10 15 years ago you think of the crazy upsets uh I think of Iowa State beating like a top five Oklahoma State team at home obviously the Michigan Appalachian State game uh Notre Dame had a tough loss to Marshall a few years ago at home it it is these games I think that makes this sport so special uh and and canot can really only be replicated in college basketball in this country so um truly great game for everybody except Notre Dame fans uh they obviously aren't as weren't as excited to to see the the upset on Saturday but um yeah truly truly great game um for the sport I think okay moving into the third game that I want to get into um this this evening as I record Colorado boy oh boy where do we start Colorado goes into Norman not Norman um goes into Lincoln Nebraska and they lose 28 to10 game was over at halftime I mean Nebraska opened up a pretty quick 14 to nothing lead they double that make it 28 to nothing at halftime and Colorado was was cooked so Jor do pick six in the first quarter um Nebraska was getting 5 10 yards per carry in the first quarter first half um Dylan Rola really didn't have to make many plays to win this football game and and I was I was talking about that in the preview I thought that um Matt rule was going to set up a game plan where they knew they were going to be able to get you know three four five yards per carry against this weak Colorado front and I think they were going to lean on the Run game uh Dante Dow um specifically he had 17 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns you know he was kind of the the player of the game for them on on offense and really not put a ton of pressure on Rola and yeah they they they won this game pretty easily and and just more question marks for this Colorado program you know Nebraska didn't look good in the second half I thought Colorado's defense stepped up they they shut out Nebraska in the second half so I I do want to credit Colorado for that Dion actually said heading into the halftime locker room that he thought that their defense played okay in the first half it was really just getting that offense going and the defense only gave up three touchdowns uh because shur had that pick six so I think there is some truth to that that you know maybe we need to like wait on Nebraska because I I really just don't think much of this Colorado team right now let's wait and see for for Nebraska once they get into conference play uh they do have an easy run of games before they get into uh the tougher part of this schedule when they play Ohio State uh and USC later in the season uh in October and in November time so let's wait on Nebraska this is a good win for them at home but I think they need to take care of of Colorado if they were to be you know a serious football team this year Colorado on the other hand what my question is what is the endgame for Colorado for Dion at Colorado what does he want out of this job because he's not recruiting at the high school level whatsoever he portal very hard last off season in in the offseason before his first year La uh in in 2023 he's clearly trying to build a roster through the transfer portal and not at you know the development route right he made a lot of coaching changes this off season brought in a lot of former NFL guys it's it's not working it's the same team as it was last year Nebraska had six sacks on shadur Sanders the offensive line is not any better they brought in Jordan Seaton the the festar offensive lineman but he's a true freshman right he's not having any impact you have your own quarterback going after the offensive line in postgame media what like what are we doing here the the the the body language on the sideline is awful I I cannot imagine that it is a healthy good culture in that locker room and a lot of people in the outside in the National media I think are a little bit afraid to go out Colorado I I don't know why Dion has this you know aura that that people are afraid to attack it but what what is what is the goal for him at Colorado is it to throw the ball 100 times and get shadur the best looks he possibly can to to look good for NFL Scouts and to get him to the NFL and then Dion's bolting with with Shor Sanders like do you who you know all everyone listening to this podcast right now do you actually think that Dion is going to stay at Colorado after his two sons leave this offseason after Travis Hunter one of the most dynamic players in recent memory in college football after all of that Talent walks out the door by the way they only really have three good players in Sher Sanders Travis Hunter and and uh Jimmy horn the other wide receiver he's good do they really like do you really think that sh uh Dion is going to stay at Colorado and continue to build that program once all of that Talent walks out the door and you're left with what what is left nothing is left you have not recruited at the high school level so there's not much talent to develop are you going to is he really going to portal hard next offseason and try to continue to build that color roster I don't see it he's not recruiting at the high school level I think he's I really do think he's bolting after this season he might he might follow his son to the NFL and and coach at wherever shador ends up which also another bad look for for Colorado shador left the game he walked off the sideline and into the locker room with two minutes left in the game I don't I mean and they were only down 28 to10 and and they brought in the backup quarterback I mean Michigan would have been continued to play Davis Warren based on what we saw against Texas so I I just I don't I don't think it's a serious football program um I I don't think they're they really care about winning uh I think it's all about um getting their star players the best looks for NFL Scouts trying to get them drafted as highly as possible and they don't really care about wins and losses I'm going to be honest I mean no I know the offensive line is a weakness but they didn't even try to establish the Run game why are they throwing a first down pass on their own goal line essentially on first like that that ended up being the pick six why are you throwing a basically a you know 10 15 yard yards across the field out route that easily gets jumped for a pick six and a walk-in touchdown one yard you know when he basically had to run why are you why are you not trying to at least establish some semblance of a running game move the ball out of you know get the ball out of your goal line like there's no they 22 rushing attempts their leading rusher was Don Hayden with 32 yards and he had five carries I don't I don't I don't know what they're doing there I truly don't get it um and you know they barely beat an FCS team in week one now you're going to Colorado State next weekend for a rivalry game you know Colorado State's going to want blood for what happened you know after what happened last season and then they get into conference play you know they have Kansas State they have to travel to Arizona uh who looks suspect this weekend uh they they host Utah late in the season they go to Kansas and they they play Oklahoma State I think it's a weak conference you know cam Rising went down for Utah this weekend if he's out you know who who you know who is is the leader in the conference they could end up being okay and and pushing for again four or five wins but I just don't understand what they're trying to build at Colorado I just don't see the vision whatsoever and I'm not I'm I'm not going to be afraid to call that out um the way I think you know maybe some people around the media are a little bit more hesitant and I understand why I'm not I'm not like blaming them or anything um I understand and you know um but I I I just I don't know what they're trying to build there at Colorado um the the the next game I want to get to into real quick Tennessee they dismantle NC State 51-10 in Charlotte um NC State was hanging around a little bit in the first half it was only seven nothing after the first quarter but then Grayson McCall throws that really bad pick six and it was pretty much lights out at that point Tennessee outscores um NC State 31 to seven in the second half the story of the game for me was actually not Nico imal Eva the quarterback for Tennessee he he had a bad game he threw two interceptions the story of the game for me was was Dylan Samson running the football and and and I think if you're a Tennessee fan you're giddy uh with the way that that they won this football game it was a big game top 25 matchup NC State was one of the you know favorites in the ACC a wide open conference and Tennessee ran the ball for 249 yards on 44 attempts Dylan Samson like I mentioned he had 20 carries for 132 in two touchdowns um you love the push the offensive line had Nico ran for 65 and a touchdown like I said he he he did throw those two interceptions only threw for 21 yards so that could this game could end his Heisman can and his Heisman candidacy unless he goes off you know goes nuclear in SEC play I saw Lee Coro on Game Day predicted him to win two Heisman um I I that's a bet I wouldn't bet on that um but yeah Tennessee was was just Leaps and Bounds better than NC State I mentioned in the preview how NC State's defense uh took a step back this year and that was evident I mean 51 points Grayson McCall there was a lot of hyper on him coming in from from Coastal Carolina this off season he was poor in this game you know 104 yards passing with that interception they only ran for 39 yards Jordan Waters I mean Jordan Waters seven carries for negative4 yards your star running back transfer from duke disappointing uh Casey concepion five receptions 53 yards he didn't do much I mean Tennessee established themselves I think as I you know there's a tier of three teams Ohio State Georgia and Texas that I think are the class of college football so far this season through two weeks we still have a long way to go I think Tennessee is on that tier below with like USC ol Miss um um who else who else is on that tier let me just let me just pull up the rankings I can go through my tiers so I think Georgia Texas Ohio state they're A Step Above everybody right now and I think Ohio State might be the best team Ohio state looks like an absolute jug or not I know they played Western Michigan I know they played uh akan in week one but that offense is absolutely lethal they actually have a good offensive coordinator this year in Chip Kelly they have one of if not the best defenses in the country um I think ten uh Ohio state is should be the favorites for the national championship at this point in the season Georgia and Texas that's my top three top three tier and then you have this tier below like I mentioned where there's a lot of question marks like they they could push themselves into that first that first tier of three but it's Alabama ol Miss Missouri Tennessee USC I have in that tier Miami I have in that tier I would probably lump Oregon in that tier although I have not loved I've seen from Oregon so far this season uh and that's kind of where that tier ends right those are the teams that are going to be pushing for you know seeds five through 12 five through 11 whatever um I I really like Tennessee I picked them to make the playoff before this season they have a highflying offense an elite quarterback with with Josh hpel I know he didn't play that great this weekend um but I think he's going to continue to develop you know they play Kent State at home this next weekend before they travel to Oklahoma which is going to be a fun game um that's week four uh the 21st of September um so I'm really high on Tennessee NC State that's tough but the good news if you're an NC State fan is this was not a conference game you can still run the table in the ACC you can still make the playoff but I I think even if they make like you know even if they make the playoff we learned that they're not going to be able to compete um for a title you know they're not on that tier they're not at that level just yet um so disappointing loss for NC State that one was really never close um maybe a little bit in the first half but but Tennessee gets it done late night and I mentioned this team a second ago Oregon this was I put it on the the the graphic this was the the most entertaining the best game of the week Oregon wins 37-34 against boy State Oregon should just forget scheduling teams from the state of Idaho Idaho they struggled against Idaho in week one they struggled mightily against Boise in week two thing about Oregon the biggest weakness of this team right now is their offensive line last season the Oregon offensive line allowed five sacks All Season not not week one not week four not the first half of the season they allowed five sacks all of last season last week they allowed I believe it was three sacks and this week this week they allowed four sacks so they're already at more sacks allowed this season than they allowed all of last season Boise State gave Oregon an absolute run for their money they they they were led by their stud rusher Aston jenty 192 yards rushing in three touchdowns I think he is the Heisman favorite right now I truly believe that if he keeps putting up these video game numbers I know he's a running back at a G5 school but if he keeps putting up those numbers he very well could win the Heisman because some of the quarterback play we have seen so far this season um does not lead you to think that a quarterback is going to win a heis if you had to pick one so far the best quarterback's been Quin yers he has that signature win on the road um and you know a favorable SEC schedule to where you think he could he I think if I had to pick a quarterback right now it would be Quinn ERS um and that's even projecting forward but I digress jenty Heisman favorite Oregon allowed 20 221 rushing yards only 148 through the air but again that offensive line I mean Oregon only rushed for 110 yards in this football game they passed for 243 Dylan Gabriel made throws when he needed to they had a few dumb turnovers I think it was in the third quarter the tight end fumbled uh there was a fumble on an exchange on a snap and that allowed Boise State to take the lead Oregon then returned to kickoff for a touchdown the guy he dropped it before he before he crossed the plane and I don't know if it was like home cooking or something it was pretty obvious and they they they reviewed it and the touchdown stood I I I would say I disagree with that call Oregon got lucky on that one uh then they made a few stops and and ultimately drove down to like the five yard line kick the game-winning field goal uh and won by three um this was obviously a late night game so maybe a few of you guys you know did not stay up to watch um but Boise absolutely gave Oregon a run for their money and you're thinking okay you know heading into the season everyone was like big 10 Oregon Ohio State conference title I mean really there was no debate right uh every preview magazine I read every video I watched every article I read it was to at se Oregon in Ohio State for the Big 10 championship and now Oregon has not looked like a big 10 Champion uh a national title I mean Joe picked him to win their National the the national championship and I'm I'm not you know faulting him I had them I think in the semis in in the quarters uh I had them in the Big 10 Championship too but they have not looked the part what whatsoever this season and all of a sudden it could be USC playing for that game the Big 10 Championship Ohio State comes to Oregon uh on October 12th Oregon has a lot to figure out before then I think Dylan Gabriel is still a perfect fit for that offense you know I I love him in that scheme uh I love him running the football had a nice little short rushing uh rushing touchdown in this game that I I just like the play call overall um but they're not going to they're going anywhere without an offensive line uh they're going to have to stop the run I know Boise is you know has the best running back in the country right now but um they're gonna have to they're gonna have to beef up a little bit uh you know they got Oregon State on the road this weekend that's that's a tough rivalry game and then they go to UCLA which you know UCLA is down I think but um nothing's off the table for Oregon after you struggle against Idaho you struggle against Boise one of the better G5 teams but not a power four team then they got Michigan State and then again like I said they have or Ohio State coming to Eugene they need to figure it out before that game to say the least uh so the Big 10 Race you know the theme of this weekend is like upheaval and and and we're GNA have to relearn this sport from what we were thinking preseason prediction uh time Notre Dame they're not a lock in the playoff to make the playoff anymore the Big 10 the race looks entir L different at this point in the season than it did in the preseason I know Oregon and Ohio State are still technically undefeated but Oregon has not looked apart and I I mentioned the ACC Florida state was the team that most people were picking to win that conference we're gonna have to relearn that conference so Oregon tough one obviously happy you know if you're an Oregon fan to come out with the win um but you're frustrated I think if you're an Oregon fan with the way the team has looked so far this season elsewhere in the Big 10 Iowa State they go in to Iowa City and they win 20 to9 the biggest takeaway for me from this game and I had it as a as a key to the game is is this Iowa offense actually any different under new OC Tim Lester and the answer is defiantly no it is the same Iowa team that we have known for the past my whole life 28 years I'm not 28 gez 26 years I'm aging myself there Iowa threw for 99 yards with Kade magnam he was 13 for 29 they ran for 204 so classic Iowa you know Caleb Johnson actually had a really good game had had a nice touchdown run uh long one but he went for 187 yards and two touchdowns it's a rushing Le team as we all know um but it did not look any different from what I've I've seen from Iowa the past few seasons um I will say they very well probably should have won this football game Iowa state gets the ball late um Roco Beck makes a huge pass uh to the receiver on the sideline and they kick a bomb field goal to win the game how how how far was that kick 54 yards Kyle con Conrad the kicker for Iowa State made a 46 yard in the fourth to start the to start the quarter and then made the game winner uh as time expired 20 to 19 54 y at the end so hats off to Iowa State you know this was an ugly game I think this was a classic Iowa Iowa State game and I don't think either of these teams are going to be fighting for their respective conferences this season obviously Iowa State you're happy to get the win um Iowa it's going to be more of the same for them this year H unfortunately again an elite defense uh Maybe not maybe not Elite actually but a good defense and um a bad offense Iowa State a sluggish offense I mean rck Ock I like him 272 yards uh passing two touchdowns did throw an interception but I like him I like I like the weapons Abu Sama the running back um jayen Noel had a really good game as at receiver like they have three good players on offense but some question marks I think around the offensive line and the skill guys around them around outside of Noel and like the rest of the the receiving room I know Iowa was tough offense are tough defense but I thought they could have done a little bit more moving the football the good news for them they have a a byee Iowa state does and then they play Arkansas State um so they have some time I think to figure it out they don't play A ranked team until November 23rd 2nd to last weekend of the year so um again I wasn't super impressed by either of these teams in this game it was it was a classic Iowa Iowa State game low-scoring ugly uh the over did cash actually I think the over was 34 is points I I took it and it hit um but yeah I'm I'm not super optimistic about either of these teams for um this season specifically elsewhere in the Big 12 I had this as the best game of the weekend until um the Oregon game happened late night Oklahoma State beats Arkansas 39-31 in double overtime Arkansas was up big in the first half of the of this game they were up 21 to7 at half um and then Oklahoma State goes on a run you know Arkansas had a few turnovers um they threw an interception their quarterback ton green did um and Oklahoma State outscored them 26-1 in the second half to to sorry not 261 24 to1 to push it to overtime um where they win it in double OT uh they score the touchdown and then they get the extra point uh they get the two-point conversion in the second overtime and then Arkansas doesn't do anything they don't score um I think I you know I picked I picked Oklahoma State to win this conference and I'm feeling less and less you know optimistic about that pick um after the first two weekends of football for Oklahoma State mainly because yes Oly Gordon is good he was actually contained pretty well in this game only had 49 yards rushing and the strength was was supposedly their offensive line their veteran offensive line um but I I don't think Allan Bowman is a playoff caliber quarterback you know and I talked about the question marks in the Big 12 Conference this year but so it still very well could be them that ends up winning this conference but I don't think they're going to be able to win a playoff game you know or two with him as their quarterback he he was 27 for 48 he did throw for 326 yards he had an interception in there um I think there's a ceiling with Oklahoma State uh because of the quarterback play um and I feel that I feel that way about a lot of teams in the Big 12 like Avery Johnson didn't look good this weekend against Tain on the road um Utah all of a sudden without you know I haven't seen the injury report on cam Rising but he left that game and they weren't able to move the football like the ACC and the Big 12 it's like it feels like there's a huge gap between those those conferences and the Big 10 and the SEC and that Gap might continue to um grow o over over the course of the you know the next five or so years in college football with the way the money works right now and and all that um the the Big 10 and the SEC are really turning into Super conferences uh from the Arkansas like the Arkansas side of things you I know you lost this game in in devastating fashion you blow a lead but all of a sudden you're you know I'm a little bit more optimistic about Arkansas than I was heading into the season they really they showed fight I think ton green is a flawed quarterback um but a good an exciting quarterback if you're an Arkansas fan he can he can get you to a bowl game uh jindon Jackson had a great game at running back three touchdowns 149 yards they were able to move the football on Oklahoma State um offensive line for Arkansas we we know that's Sam pitman's thing right you know he was an offensive line coach um that's kind of how he he made his living and it looked good this weekend like that was their they were really bad last year uh so they've showed showed sign of improvement they got patrio at OC they've scored they scored a touchdown on every drive against Arkansas Pine Bluff and I think they scored like their on first two or of of the first two or three drives that they had against Oklahoma State um so it's like they started out scoring touchdowns on like their first 11 of 13 drives don't quote me on those numbers but it was something really good to start the season so all of a sudden you know Arkansas could be could be a pesky team in the in the SEC this year they host Tennessee and LSU they also host ol Miss and Texas it's a brutal schedule for Arkansas this year in the SEC uh but they could could provide a little bit of a speed bump for some of these these um top ranked teams that might be in like a sandwich spot where they're coming off a big game and and then they have a big game after the week after Arkansas and like Arkansas's kind of in the middle could be like you know a sandwich opportunity for Arkansas to get like a few wins against a win or two against an unranked team or sorry against a top ranked team uh so Arkansas you're feeling a little bit optimistic about them if you're a fan um Oklahoma State you get the win you were favored by seven points you somehow cover in double overtime but I still think there's some some question marks around that team and and just the quarterback play they're not they're not going to go very far unless Alan Bowman um is able to to figure things out a little bit more than than he has so far and he's been like he's been in college football for seven some seven eight years like I If it hasn't if he hasn't figured it out by now I don't know if he will let's go rapid fire to wrap things up on this week to recap podcast let's go conference by conference every game I give a few comments for every single game Indiana they beat Western Illinois 77 to three I mean they've looked the part I mean you can't judge a win against Western Illinois that much but they beat FIU Week 1 31 to7 and then they beat Western Illinois in week two it's it's a great start to the Kurt cetti era at Indiana 77 points is a lot no I don't care who you're playing um so I'm feeling good about picking Indiana to make a bowl game they go to UCLA this weekend uh at 6:30 that'll be a fascinating matchup to say the least Duke they beat Northwestern in double overtime now Malik Murphy 242 yards passing three touchdowns did throw a pick um Duke you know from a Northwestern side of things again like I I'm not expecting much from them this season um I I didn't watch much of this game I watched like the first half I was actually tuned in to BYU SMU more so than this game um was also a late start on a Friday night but Duke again good start to the Manny Diaz era 2 and 0 Malik Murphy's looking solid as a quarterback um and I think Northwestern uh might take a little bit of a step back this year um from where they were last season you know they were bowling and they won their bowl game good news for uh for northwesterners they don't play A ranked team until the middle of November and that's Ohio state so they have some time to figure things out Ohio State they beat Western Michigan 56 zip jeremi Smith again I mean 119 yards receiving a touchdown quinan junkins two touchdowns Caleb DS had a great game us Ohio State's looking like the best team in the country um easy non-conference schedule so we're not going to learn a ton about them until they play uh Oregon later in I think that game is in the middle of October Penn State they struggle they barely beat Bowling Green it's a classic let down game you know after losing to West Virginia in week or sorry after beating West Virginia in week one uh they this game was in the balance uh they were actually losing at halftime 24 to10 uh and then they they broke a few runs Nicholas Singleton again really good game 119 yards rushing Drew Aller was not great threw an interception um Conor uh B basak uh basac the quarterback for Bowling Green looked actually pretty solid basac sorry uh he threw for 254 yards did throw two interceptions but it is a stout defense so for a G5 quarterback I thought he played well and you know it's a it's a concern in win for Penn State like they should have won that game by much more than they did but again the good news is they don't have a tough game until they travel to USC in the middle of October so they have some time to figure things out um and that was a let down spot from the the week one win and in uh I think it's a rivalry game against West Virginia so TBD on Penn State but um if you're a Penn State fan you're kind of getting the vibe of like oh that feels a lot like the past few seasons we'll see USC they killed Utah State 48 to nothing we talked about that one a little bit earlier but Woody marks 103 yards and a touchdown he looks great Illinois great non-conference win for Illinois 23- 17 over Kansas Kansas their quarterback Jaylen Daniels had a really bad game three interceptions left Illinois with a lot of short Fields that's really how they won this game you know their quarterback Luke almeer only threw for 192 yards they only rushed for 79 yards a lot of their damage was done from Kansas in Kansas giving Illinois short Fields so yes it's a great win for for the fighting in Li um they have a really tough conference schedule I don't know if they'll be able to make a bowl game this is a this is a very disappointing loss if you're a Kansas fan there's a lot of hype Around The Jayhawks this season that they were going to fight for the Big 12 they they very well could you know this this was not a conference game but if you're a serious team if you're a playoff Contender you win on the road against Illinois um so disappointing for Kansas Illinois took advantage of their mistakes and won the football game Minnesota they beat Rhode Island I don't have a single comment on that one Ruckers they beat akan good win for them Michigan State I watched a lot of this game because my friend that was a Michigan State Alum was over Michigan State they knock off Maryland 27 to 24 Aiden Charles was up and down in this game he threw for 363 yards three touchdowns but he did have three interceptions so he is he is still developing he's a very young quarterback um he is a sophomore he you see flashes where you're like I I see it with this guy you know great Runner um great arm I mean he made made a huge throw on like a 70 yard touchdown when they were down in this game in the fourth quarter um like I I see the flashes and if he can hone in on on on the turnovers and some of like his accuracy problems he could be very good quarterback for Michigan State and and I think for Michigan State right now and where they are in the Jonathan Jonathan Smith era it doesn't matter how it looks just matters how you get it done or that you get it done and and they're two and 0 and and they're fighting they're gonna be fighting for a bowl this season I think I actually pick them in the preseason to make a bowl game um I feel good about that right now they've lost a few things few guys to injury already um but I like I like Jonathan Smith there I think he makes a lot of sense for that program and Aiden Charles has the potential to develop into something special for the Spartans I like what I saw from Billy Edwards as a quarterback good runner um good like not necessarily an elite Runner but just good like pocket presence and like slithery short first first down uh like runs that he had through for 253 uh I think he's I think they have something in Billy Edwards they they should have won this game Maryland had every opportunity to win this game they missed a field goal late um and and kind of left the door open for Michigan State to come down and kick a game-winning field goal um so Michigan State you're optimistic if you're a fan you're feeling good Maryland just that's that's a tough loss they they should have won that one uh Washington takes care of Eastern Michigan and then uh Wisconsin they had a tough game against South Dakota and won by two touchdowns but it was closer than it should have been uh I think Wisconsin is going to have a tough game against Alabama at home and Ken brandle this weekend uh but we'll talk about that in the preview with Joe SEC not a ton of SEC games that were really noteworthy this weekend Alabama they beat USF 42 to 16 that is not that that score does not tell the story of the way that football game looked they Alabama really struggled moving the football South Florida had the ball and were driving to take the lead in in multiple I think they had like two drives in the fourth quarter where they could have took the lead against Alabama this was like they dedicating the field to Nick Sab there's a lot of off the- field stuff uh ceremonies and everything with Alabama this weekend tough game against USF USF is one of the better teams in the American if USF was able to pass the ball with Byron Brown they would have won this football game unfortunately he just they they they can't they were not able to uh only 103 yards passing they ran for 206 so Bama needs to work on that run defense um and USF needs to work on their passing game um that's really the main takeaway I think from that one Alabama's got some some way to go and that's that's a concerning blip in their season they again they play Wisconsin this next weekend should be a win you would think and then they gotta buy and then they travel to Georgia so we're gonna learn a lot about Alabama uh in that game ol Miss takes care of MTSU Missouri takes care of Buffalo Georgia takes care of Tennessee Tech Oklahoma struggled at home against Houston 16 to 12 is the final there didn't catch a ton of this one I had it on in one of the quads but I wasn't super focused on it Jackson Arnold struggled passing the ball 19 for 32 threw an interception uh only 172 174 yards for the Sooners Houston coming off that weird uh game against UNLV where they were never really in it most people were riding them off in this game against Oklahoma I think Oklahoma was about a three touchdown favorite and they struggled at home against Houston so they have a tough one at home against tan this weekend uh Dain you know they lost barely to Kansas State but it's gonna be a tough match up and then they got Tennessee at home so uh if you're an OU fan you're a little bit nervous heading its SEC Conference play I think LSU they beat Nicholls andn beats MCN Cal and nice win over Auburn that was that was surprising that was Joe's upset of the week good pick by him there uh shout out to Joe for that pick did not see that coming alurn tough tough tough tough tough tough tough where is that program going now I will say they are recruiting at a very high level right now so you feel good about that if you're an alurn fan but the onfield product has not been great uh under Hugh frees and pton Thorne four interceptions in this game that's that's really where this game was won and lost they need to upgrade a quarterback Thorne is not an Auburn caliber quarterback Auburn is a program that I think of of having good quarterbacks and obviously led by Cam Newton but you also had like Nick Marshall who's good for them they they got upgrade at that spot that's really what it comes down to for them right now South Carolina destroys Kentucky was was very disappointed by uh the Kentucky offense they were not able to move the football whatsoever in this game this was a surprise game I was I did not expect this this result Len nor sers played an okay game two touchdowns did throw a pick um but the story is Brock Vandergriff three completions three completions as a starting quarterback three for 10 South Carolina had more sacks five than Brock Vandergriff the Kentucky starting quarterback had completions it's not what you want it's not what you want so all of a sudden you know South Carolina they struggle in week one against Old Dominion and then they go on the road and beat Kentucky in an SEC game feel good if you're a South Carolina fan they got game day coming to to Columbia this coming weekend against LSU and it was a weaker slate this weekend but okay I was talking a little bit about uh last week about how Shane be M there's kind of Rumblings that he might be on the hot seat a win against LSU at home who LSU looked a little bit shaky against Nicholls all of a sudden you're you know three and0 you're feeling good about South Carolina 2-0 right now so let's pump the braks but um good win for South Carolina Florida they take care of sford DJ lagway the story there 456 yards passing three touchdowns the Five Star Plus freshman uh took over for Graham Merz who was injured last week against Miami he looked the part against I know it is stford but 460 yards 456 yards passing is a lot I don't care who you're playing Vandy they're two and0 they beat alorn State they only need four more wins G have to find those four wins somewhere they only need four more to make a bowl game for the first time in a while in Nashville and then Arizona State uh they beat Mississippi State a late night game in h Tempe cam scabo 33 carries for H Arizona State 262 yards no touchdowns uh Sam levit the Michigan State transfer quarterback for ASU he actually had two rushing touchdowns for them threw for 69 yards and rushed for 68 um yeah if Arizona State's running for that much on you and if you're Mississippi State what is the rest of the SEC gonna do that's concerning so yeah Mississippi State I I had them in the in toward the bottom of that conference this season I'm feeling good about that long way to go in the Jeff lebby era it's kind of like a year zero for them but that's that's a tough L obviously you want to win those those um non-conference games Big 12 BYU they knock off SMU on Friday Night ugly game SMU their kicker had a hell of a game what's the guy's name I gotta give him a shout out um Colin Rogers five for five on field goals so SMU did not score a single touchdown in this game long of 53 yards uh for him the kicker he is a junr from Alabama he had a great game SMU Rett Lashley some weird quotes heading into this game um basically saying how you know they play 10 straight uh Power five games to wrap up the season and he he said like we're not expected to win any any of these games there's no pressure on us uh it's not about this year you know we're not there yet talent-wise and that was I I where's is that coming from like a lot of people were picking SMU to be one of the better teams in the ACC this year I talked about how they they had brought in a lot of beef from power power four conferences in the portal this offseason and you go out and lose to a BYU team that I don't think that much of um the quarterback play in this game was was not great Uh Kevin Jennings the SMU quarterback threw an interception Jake ritl threw an interception for BYU smu's kind of doing that whole quarterback thing Preston Stone only had four um attempts so it was really Kevin Jennings heavy but they're still like kind of deciding who to run at quarterback I guess or who's like the true out andout number one guy weird Vibes there um from SMU in this game um BYU won an ugly one on Friday night in SMU I don't I don't think either of those teams are going to do much this year Utah they they knock off Baylor um but again if you're a Utah fan you're just worrying about that cam Rising injury report I'm actually gon to gole it live um yeah I don't think there's any updates they're saying okay injury not as bad as initially feared not serious injury he did exit the game though he hurt his hand but it seems like there's positive um updates there they're not they're not winning anything if if they they don't have him you know if with a healthy cam Rising I think Utah's Far and Away the best team in the Big 12 um but with an injured cam Rising the Big 12 is utter chaos and anybody can win that conference um Kansas State they knock off two lane back and forth game you worry about um Avery Johnson 15 completions for 181 yards passing I think he's gonna need to develop as a passer if Kansas State wants to make the playoff uh good good job rushing uh DJ giddens had a big game for Kansas State and they were able to go on the road against a tough G5 team weird Stadium small environment weird environment and everything and get the win that's all ultimately all that matters but they're G again they're going to need to develop um and get better throughout the course of the Season Arizona won a weird one against Northern Arizona they were down at halftime 10 to six outscored them um 16 to nothing in the second half so I don't know we'll see with Arizona pit they beat Cincy that was a good back and forth game pit was up or Cincy was up big pit had a nice little comeback Eli seen three touchdowns the quarterback for pit um didn't catch a ton of this one but good win for pit on the road ACC team there ciny that's a tough one West Virginia beats U Albany UCF they destroy Sam Houston State so Sam Houston State had a great win against rice in week one big upset for them and then they they lay an egg against UCF UCF is an electric offense don't sleep on UCF in in the Big 12 TCU they win uh Washington state with a nice win bumping Over Texas Tech uh 37- 16 in Pullman late night game good win Texas Tech they they barely beat abene Christian in week one needed overtime to beat an FCS team and then uh wazu they go on the road and lose they get beat around pretty bad um yeah that that's that's concerning if you're Texas Tech could be a long season for them and then the ACC Miami wins they beat Florida A&M Louisville they beat Jacksonville State Syracuse win of the week in this conference I think beating a 2-0 Georgia Tech Team Kyle McCord 381 yards passing four touchdowns for the orange um they were up big Georgia Tech kind of got back in this game late but don't sleep on Syracuse to win this conference the schedule is pretty easy their toughest conference game is Miami at home the last game of the year they do travel to Boston College who's pesky they go to NC State but NC State looked really bad this weekend it's Stanford Holy Cross UNLV NC State pit Virginia Tech Boston College Cal Yukon and Miami Syracuse I think is a good team they very well could fight for the ACC this year do not sleep on Syracuse uh and then the rest of them I mean Boston College they they beat up on Duane Boston College looks pretty good I know it's Duane but 56 to nothing that's a that's a good win North Carolina beats Charlotte Virginia Tech beats Marshall they pulled away late in this one like second half pull away they were up 10 seven and a half Stanford beats calply and UVA nice win over Wake Forest they were losing the majority of that game and then ultimately outscored Wake Forest 14 to nothing in the um in the fourth quarter Hank Bach the Wake Forest quarter back threw for 403 yards Anthony kandria the quarterback for UVA is a lot of fun to watch he threw for 357 three touchdowns did throw two picks so you're gonna get like the the you know both ends to the Spectrum with kandria um but a good win for Virginia they're two and 0 and uh I think they're going to be fighting for a bowl this season finally making some progress under Tony Elliots um in terms of G5 you know the story was obviously Northern Illinois I failed to mention the Clemson game they were absolutely dismantled Appalachian State 35 nothing uh they outscored them in the first quarter ended up winning 66-2 I know it's App State but appstate was one of the better um G5 SBC Sunbelt Conference teams this year so um I think that was a bit of a statement for Clemson at home u a lot of people were picking Appalachian State to cover in that game and Clemson pretty much ended all of that discussion in the the first quarter so they got NC State after a bye um they I i' pick them to win that game right now don't sleep on Clemson they can very well turn their season around if their only loss is Georgia in week one they could still be a playoff team Memphis beats Troy by lock of the week cashed Army nice little win on the road against FAU Kent State they lose to an FCS team in St Francis it's tough Toledo beats UMass Idaho beats Wyoming FCS team over FBS team Navy they're two- 0 we love the service cies Texas State dismantles UTSA 49-10 Texas State don't sleep on them as a potential playoff Squad they're going to be uh fighting for the Sun Belt Conference this year uh UTSA um could be a long season I mean they they struggled in week one against Kennesaw State and then they gets spanked up against Texas state in week two that's tough that's tough FIU they were christening the pit Bowl stadium and they beat up on Central Michigan 52 to6 nice win for them um Ohio beats South Alabama and L Louisiana beats Kennesaw State Kennesaw State starts off the season 0 and2 in their first season in the uh FBS Georgia Southern nice win on the road against Nevada Nevada is a pesky team they were in that game but they lost by three UL Monroe new coach there they were predicted to be one of the worst teams in the FBS this year they actually beat UAB pretty handedly Trent D's UAB that is they won that game 32-6 to move to two and0 rice they bounc back against Texas Southern uh Southern Utah beat UTEP tough start for their new head coach Scotty Waldren at UTP comes over from Austin P I believe Fresno State they bounce back after their loss against Michigan they beat Sacramento State FCS team by only 16 so that's concerning if you're a Michigan fan Liberty they beat New Mexico state only 30 to 24 so there's some question marks Liberty has shown cracks so far this season Liberty by the way great uniforms in this game uniforms of the week and then Oregon State Nest win 21 to Zipp arino against San Diego State to wrap up the Slate to wrap up week two to wrap up this podc cast what a week of college football hope you guys enjoyed this recap um enjoyed bringing it to you I wish Michigan won that football game Unfortunately they did not Texas might just be the class of the SEC they might be the class of college football this year who knows RS to be Scene It seems like everything we learn we're gonna have to relearn it week after week um with the way the sport has gone so far this season who knows maybe next week we get some more upsets it's a lighter slate I will say um I think it's like I said LSU versus South Carol is is game day so um maybe an opportunity to go apple picking with your significant other to to go I don't know um sa save save a weekend and and go watch NFL on Sunday you know um go watch baseball something I don't know uh still GNA be exciting there still could be some upsets H but there's not that headliner game the way we had this weekend unfortunately it did not deliver in um Michigan Texas but I digress hope you guys enjoyed this podcast we will be back I think Wednesday uh with Joe previewing the week three slate until then catch you next time peace out
