THEM ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AND FIREFIGHTERS JUST GAVE AN UPDATE ON THE AIRPORT FIRE BURNING AT ORANGE AND RIVERSIDE COUNTIES. >> MORE THAN 22,000 ACRES HAVE BURNED IN JUST THREE DAYS. OUR EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER LETICIA JUAREZ IS LIVE IN LAKE ELSINORE AND LED TO THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED, AND SOME WON'T HAVE A HOME TO RETURN TO. UNFORTUNATELY I KNOW THEY WON'T. >> DAVID. >> UNFORTUNATELY, WE WENT INTO THE EL CARISO VILLAGE AREA. WE DID SEE SOME HOMES THAT WERE DESTROYED BY THE FIRE. I DO WANT TO MENTION DURING THAT PRESS CONFERENCE YOU HEARD THEM MENTION THE ELSINORE EFFECT. THAT'S THE WIND THAT KIND OF SHIFTS INTO THIS AREA AROUND THIS TIME OF DAY. AND THAT'S WHAT WE SAW YESTERDAY WHEN THE AIRPORT FIRE REALLY TOOK OFF IN THIS AREA, BURNING THROUGH THIS ENTIRE AREA. LUCKILY, THEY WERE ABLE TO STOP IT BEFORE IT COULD REACH COMMUNITIES IN LAKE ELSINORE. BUT FOR SOME OF THOSE HOMES IN THE EL CARISO VILLAGE AREA, THEY WERE NOT SO LUCKY. A HELICOPTER DOUSED A HOT SPOT ALONG THE ORTEGA HIGHWAY IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY, THE AREA ALREADY CHARRED FROM THE AIRPORT FIRE OVERNIGHT, WAS STILL SMOLDERING THIS AFTERNOON. MORE THAN 24,000 RESIDENTS REMAIN UNDER EVACUATION. >> IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE, MAN. IT'S HARD TO LEAVE YOUR SAFE SPOT. I MEAN, AGAIN, THESE FIRE FIGHTERS DO THE BEST THEY CAN AND DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN AND I JUST PUT MY TRUST IN THEM. >> THE WILDFIRES SWEEPING QUICKLY THROUGH THIS AREA. THE EL CARISO VILLAGE, WHERE HOMES THAT WERE ONCE STANDING YESTERDAY ARE NOW A TOTAL LOSS. LIKE THIS ONE. THE FIRE BURNING SO HOT THAT THE METAL MELTED OFF THE TRAILER. HERE YOU CAN SEE THAT THE FIRE RAN UPHILL. TAKING DOWN THESE POWER LINES. THERE ARE STILL SOME SMOLDERING REMAINS OF THE FIRE THAT FIREFIGHTERS WILL BE COMING THROUGH LATER THIS AFTERNOON AS THEY ASSESS THE HOMES PUTTING OUT THESE HOTSPOTS, BUT ALSO MAKING SURE THAT IT IS SAFE FOR RESIDENTS TO RETURN. AS OF NOW, IT'S JUST NOT SAFE. ANOTHER HOME IN THE EL CARISO VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD WAS ALSO HIT HARD BY THE WILDFIRE HEAT MELTING A CAR COLLECTION AND THE PROPERTY A COMPLETE LOSS. BUT AIR RESOURCES OVERNIGHT DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OTHER NEARBY HOMES. >> UNFORTUNATELY, WE DID LOSE SOME STRUCTURES, BUT THANKS TO THE CREWS THAT WE HAD ON THE GROUND AND THE AIR RESOURCES THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE NIGHT, WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE QUITE A FEW STRUCTURES. >> FIREFIGHTERS CONTINUE TO PUT OUT HOT SPOTS THAT POPPED OUT THROUGHOUT THE DAY, WHILE AIR RESOURCES CRISSCROSSED THE WILDFIRE, MAKING DROPS. COOLER TEMPERATURES ALSO HELPING TO AID FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS. >> THERE'S STILL AN ACTIVE FLANK OF THIS FIRE. I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S SETTLED DOWN. WE DON'T SEE THE SMOKE FROM WHERE WE'RE STANDING, BUT THERE IS AN ACTIVE HEAD OF THE FIRE. >> NOW, THE CONCERN RIGHT NOW IS WITH THESE WINDS. IT'S GOING TO BE PUSHING ANY ACTIVE FLAMES AND FIRE TO THE SOUTH. SO THOSE EVACUATIONS DO REMAIN IN PLACE AS TO WHEN THE EVACUATIONS WILL BE LIFTED HERE. THERE STILL IS NO TIMELINE. THEY STILL HAVE TO GET THEIR DAMAGE ASSESSMENT TEAMS IN HERE. AND THEY SAY IT'S JUST BEEN TOO DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS TO GET THEIR TEAMS IN HERE TO ASSESS
