night of course I mean just flat out with a new offensive line Ronnie Stanley is the only and Lind they're the only leftovers only leftover lefts yeah three brand new starters right Chris Jones dominating the first half just P around then Todd monin I don't know what he was he got lucky in the last play you you left ju Justice Hill to block Chris Jones Chris Jones dude Chris Jones should have just ran him over should have just pushed him all the way back to Lamar I don't know why he tried to run around yeah I don't know but the quarterback left I came to realize last night that these are three unforgiving positions in sports yeah you go ahead and you can add to it or correct the quarterback bro it's just unforgiving you gonna get all the blame no one cares about anything else someone missed the block someone ran the wrong stem on the route they were late on the break no one cares all they see is the ball falling incomplete yeah that's all they really see that's all they of help lot whole lot of help so it is amazing some of those what do you think guys L Nation what positions are unfair in professional sports what positions are unfair in professional sports as we turn to the unfair quarterback position at Notre Dame do you think Riley Leonard is going to get a fair deal this year a do you think is pretty much playoff success a bust for him that's that's interesting it's it's really unfair I think there was some unfair like the throw to Devon Ford a lot of people tried I thought that was totally unfair I'm like bro I never played the position and I can see as fast as the game was this man is being spun around getting out of a sack linebacker bearing down on him about to hit him dead in his chest and he's just trying to get rid of the ball and people were like yo if you make that play he has to make that play I mean that's fair right that's fair in a sense because that's what you brought him here for right to make the off schedule great plays yeah you you bring him to make the plays that we couldn't make last year throwing the ball down the middle of the field getting a fourth and one instead of running out of bounds you know calming the seeds when in games like he did against Texas A&M so ancillary things we're we're very excited that we we have them crazy I got a chance to uh go to a Notre Dame event yesterday at the fiesta bow Museum assistant ad came through Brian uh Apache or aat something like that he was saying how explaining how everything was working and did you know that the the school when they start paying the kids is our fund is $22 million that's pretty good I know two of it went to Riley so you know we always said if Notre Dame wanted to they could play Big Bank take little bank and N we always said that we we know that but they're good stewards we if not they want the boss up they could tell they could tell they could literally tell Auburn to go sit down right right now with do yeah oh yeah like we could and and it's funny because they're they're very like because I asked I said what is the underlying policy for these transfers because you know we're trying to keep up with the Joneses Marcus Marcus Freeman probably got these conversations all he said was Marcus Freeman knew what he signed up for oh absolutely he don't come in here with no arguments he knew what he was getting into yeah slightly this is this is this is this is this is where the fair and unfair because sometimes we go a little bit too far left a little bit too far right it's always just a little bit not say you wrong all we needed him to do listen to what Marcus Freeman said he didn't turn the ball he didn't turn the ball yeah we I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen that he he's gonna have to make some plays eventually yeah he have to make some play he had zero pass and touchdowns guys come on now about a big time program team Victory on the road that's a team Victory you have zero pass touchdowns that's a team Victory that's a University of Michigan special from last year oh special special because it's like what are we pointing to to say you're the player of the game with zero pass touchdowns and we only scored 20 something points and you didn't run them in so yeah that's a great team win because we have the roster and the depth to make it happen you also say team win because we in that same game there wasn't a single identifying player that you're like oh that's the Zack branch of the team oh that's the best player in the team that we got to go to and feeding the ball it's like we'll get a little bit from over here we'll get a little bit help from here we'll have a guy Popa make a play here so that's a team victory yeah that's a team Victory hell o line did well that's in that fourth quarter when it mattered the most heck Riley Leonard made plays when it matter Old Line blocked the tails off when it matter I actually had somebody post uh comments after I show Wednesday night left that said Riley Leonard was the reason that Jeremiah Love and jaran price got the yardage they got I said I said come on man here we go I mean y'all cap for Riley like this man done is paying your electric bill every Riley Riley had the Xbox and the PS5 joystick in his hand as he handed it off and juked and ran over the linebackers I I didn't know he had that capability left I did not know that Louisville might be kind of a litus test the def he's not gonna have one and in games are only going to get more winnable for us as we move forward and I hope he does well it's like this this NIU game is not gonna help the fact that we're not going to be tested okay in the near future so he might go for a thousand yards or something like he it's possible have you SE we have I'm gonna give you three to four statements you tell me whether or not they're fair or unfair concerning Riley ly fair or unfair because we're Fair people on the lucky Lefty podcast people try to say otherwise but what it is it was only game one it was only game one that's fair yes that's fair game one give give him some game one fairness [Music] okay he Riley Leonard has to get better throwing over the middle 100% that's fair and that's Lal okay I mean we saw it I mean that's okay okay the last two good defenses that he's played against Riley Leonard out of his own mouth said it took me three quarters to get seven oh my God that was against Notre Dame last year and Texas A&M this year the same script is it fair or unfair to say he's gonna have to change that narrative when he faces USC or a playoff team unfair because if the two games you ever played are the ones you're mentioning that they take the longest come on man we we hired this we hired this gun specifically he led comebacks in both games though just like Dak Prescott a lead a comeback but he's gonna start down they're gonna start down they're gonna start from behind of course you wow you're crazy you're crazy so yeah we was down we was down in the game yeah we're down twice so yeah that's that will happen more often than not tough games we'll be down and it's gonna take Riley to wake up and you know we come to the last you know the last quarter I guess the way he putting it I mean he's like look guys I'm gonna have y'all panicking for three quarters I'm GNA wake up that fourth one we gonna figure it out it's going to take this is a fill in the blank for you fair or unfair it's going to take more than three games for Ry Leonard to get acclimated to this offense more than three so three plus three are under it'll take three games meaning by Louisville by Louisville he should be ready to go fully ready to go is 40 points a game and you're throwing 250 play because remember with Sam last year we said he's he we're expecting 250 at least two three touchdowns Ryan Leonard should be able to accomplish that like he but it does it from going from 23 fair is it fair to say he should be throwing for 250 with the two running backs he has yeah we had we had be honest against this schedule because honestly if Notre Dame if they do what they do starter should be done by the third they should be done by quarter three quarter three Riley Leonard should be sideline that two drives in the third quarter ryy Leonard should be out of there is doing what suppos it'll take three games it'll take three games okay because he didn't start off fast first week so I mean until he shows he can start fast in that aspect we gotta wait to see that for a couple games then we gota wait to see okay are you putting teams Away by the third quarter second Drive third drive that's a whole another thing I out of starting fast because hell we started fast with Marcus Freeman's first game against Oklahoma state that started fast it didn't in great yeah but he was kicking ass in the beginning so yeah there stages to Riley's development since he's literally learning on the Fly I mean I I would I think that's fair to say he's learning on the Fly he's not just going in there with a wealth of knowledge of what we're doing and comfortable with everything so he's learning as he goes and he has the three games to get it get it right I think you Louisville is a good measurement if if he's come a long way or where he's at but even with Louisville I think we should be we should be dominating that game too and the last one fair or unfair Riley Leonard is dealing with some leftover residue from the failure of Sam Hart via the transfer portal is that fair unfair uh what do you mean um fans there are some fans that say Man we here we go with this transfer portal thing again we have high I haven't seen it I've seen nothing but love and support that's why I'm like uh the same thing you saw at the beginning for Sam har yeah but she saw Saturday 2:30 p.m. central that's 3:30 p.m. eastern time Thomas hammock and his Huskies come in man Ontario Brown Ethan Hampton and Trayvon Rudolph are three really good they're three really good players three I think all of them could play Power four football but I'm very interested in seeing you know how they stack up against the defensive talent for Notre Dame this week in that dep yeah so your three keys you've heard all week Marcus Freeman talking about keeping these guys focused getting the phone call from Jim Trestle the players who we hear from in the second half of the show as well they talked about the need to stay locked in Mal Le three keys versus the Northern Illinois Huskies three keys start fast I talked about a little earlier we want to be able to get off and and score at least 21 in the first quarter I think that's the goal to strive for because like you said I I would like to see that third second third maybe fourth unit or guys on the lower half of the depth chart get in and get some and get some run into the third fourth quarter and the only way to do that you got to score at least 21 in the first or or make it hard to come back from early so starting fast and scoring 21 and the first would be my first key uh second key let's have a passing touchdown I'm not just one but let's let's see if we can strive to get at least four I think four is a good number because one it makes up for last week and two it shows that Riley does have some skill it takes skill to get four touchdowns you know you can get lucky and get two it takes skill to get four you know because you're you're consistent so that's a that's a a that's a hard reaching one but I think it's something that needs to be uh strive for I mean hell you a top guy with no passing touchdowns how do you get to New York Ethan Hampton had five for Northern Illinois last week oh my God so like come on dude you you you starting bad now if we trying to get to New York you can't have zero touchdown games it just can't happen last one I think it uh it's hard to give a defensive one for a team I just think we're over over like we're just way better than uh defensively over their offense but it's the same thing the ni's gonna run the football so limiting NIU under a 100 yards I think is is is this the goal because if we could do that then I know uh that secondary is Gonna Come Alive if Ethan starts to throw that football I uh a lot of blown coverages by the worst team one of that worst CS teams that D Western Illinois is aw and it's so funny left because if you go back Western Illinois um has put forth a lot of NFL Talent over the lot of 20 years bro a lot of talent has come out of that program and they fallen on really hard times really hard times I think they will winless last year the way they looked against Northern Illinois they're probably going to end up being winless again obvious shocked if they win a game this year L it was really bad so it was that b yeah yeah yeah yeah it was that bad you know how you watch the full game if you watch the highlights the highlights usually make it look less or it's not as bad watching the highlights as watching the full game or watching the all 22 if you just go watch the Highlight just put a ni NIU Huskies football and watched the highlights from last week it's like a three minute clip it's nothing but busted coverages no penetration in the Run game to get holes is literally hallways just running hallways for the running backs it's crazy they threw a shovel pass a shovel pass that the runner never the receiver technically it's the receiver never got touched they threw a shuffle pass from the nine from the nine left he didn't get touch it was the I'm telling you Western Illinois was that bad Northern Illinois literally took their foots off the break I mean put their foot on the brakes in the fourth quarter backup quarterback was in like into of the third and he scored and L a touchdown Drive oh it's man man it's um Dom walk Northern Illinois played Western Illinois last week stay with me people man dude s you know sometimes people just people get uptight man we're just in a world where everybody wants to counter man they just want just everybody feel I gotta C I gotta disagree instead of just sitting back listening getting the full context obviously he came in mid conversation I'm talking about what Northern Illinois did against Western Illinois and how Western Illinois historically has been a really good program they falling on Hard Times Western Illinois is uh Tony Tony Romo's program right no that's Eastern oh damn they got East West and all of those programs were really good like stepping stone programs back in the day when the transfer rules were different yeah if you went to eastern and western a lot of those kids ended up in Illinois a lot of those kids ended up in Missouri oh yeah it was like a theater school to like the local schools the power five at that time power five schools that were nearby um uh it is very much a big step up right Notre Dame is taking a step down in competition from last week Northern Illinois taking a considerable step up who do you think is going to be more difficult for in this game left uh probably just offense I think just our offense to stay more consistent in drives I think we you know Devon four stands out but that play could have extended the drive D got a touchdown there's missed opportunities in the red zone that we've had that can be more consistent on it's just it's just such a polar opposite from our offense to our defense it's harded when you talk about things defense gets better at it's minute it's things that are like okay that's just a he just got to see it more or whatever the case is we have an execution problem sometimes offensively so the Gap I I think closing that would will'll get closer to that as we go through the season like a Northern Illinois game is a game where you close the gap so scoring four touchdowns being dominant off far as perception so now if Notre Dame building a perception to the rest of college football the rest of this schedule is that what you're saying we can we can help build a perception of oh these guys are nasty it doesn't matter who they're playing they're putting up 45 and playing their young guys by the fourth third quarter that's what Alabama was doing hell Georgia does it every week except now they've taking it to a level where they're putting in their young guys in the first quarter they're integrating young guys in the first quarter to play so you know I think that we have enough Talent on the roster to where we don't have to you know kill our starters with a heavy production load against teams that we can get out of here by the third quarter let this still be an angelli season or a Kenny mchy season by doing what we're supposed to do early on and I think you would get the most out of more players because when we was with Brian Kelly like we had Josh Adams and Dex and all these guys we'll give Josh Adams the ball a thousand times when we had CJ and Josh Adams and de we gave CJ the ball a thousand times ran him into the dirt literally ran him ran him into getting injured he was injured going into the league and it's just crazy Josh ran him into the dirt 33 trucking truck the whole time with running backs on the roster by the time he got to the NFL Josh Adam he had two knee braces at running back he was done yeah two knee braces at running back come on bro you might last six weeks in NFL so it's like now we don't do that now it's like de mccullum's just round robin in the room who W who want to go who want to go who want to go and he and he I like how he's as much as Jeremiah love in my opinion is the one jarian price got in in crucial moments in the game yeah it was a hot hand thing yeah he was sticking to the two top dogs but hey he's not afraid to to to put in the running back by committee either yeah were you done was that did you get through all three uh my last one yeah cuz I I got off on this it's hard to give a defensive one because oh no I did the last one was a defense if we can stop running you know niu's the Ontario Smith kid onario Brown Ontario Brown not bad so we can slow that down I think it give us more opportuni to get the ball back on offense so we can score more points you know more three and outs equals more points that should be our ideal um theme for this game yeah it was very impressive what the Northern Illinois Huskies were able to do against Western Illinois leathernecks I always wanted to say I always laugh at their uh Hey Western Illinois is a great party school by the way hey you we yeah we used to make the trip to mome a lot as Illinois students that's got to be in the middle of nowhere is in mome yeah yeah it's it's Southwest of champagne um champagne is nothing up there champagne is central Illinois though it's more Central right it's smack dab really not Central it's hour 15 from Chicago champagne a real yeah well the way I drove back in the day I was 90 all the way it was an hour 15 for me but you know hour 30 minutes to an injury or coming back but for him to have the mindset to come back and be a significant player in the game and making plays when his numbers called that's credit to Bo being ready for the moment and he obviously came from Clemson a good program they've been the Championships before so he knows that environment and it fits I mean you can tell that him and Riley have some Synergy and hopefully
