Orange Bowl part of course of the college football playoff we've reached the semi-final stage one last fle to clear before the national championship game we'll find out here today which side has the toughness and the depth to keep driving toward that ultimate goal the chance to raise that gold trophy over their heads as we'll see the number six seed in this playoff the West Virginia Mountaineers taking on the number seven seed in the playoffs the Clemson Tigers Bria sports college football I'm Chris fower joined by Kirk herb Street and here we go a college football playoff semifinal which team will keep their National Championship hopes alive [Music] [Applause] today kickoff team out there we are about to get cranked up with a semifinal collision and he takes this from inside the five solid job by the coverage team they bring him down at the 16 so West Virginia's offense DRS out there to open this game I love being in Miami for the orange bows so much history and tradition so many championships have been won in this game but Kirk they've been playing this since 1935 can you tell me who won that first orange bow you know what's funny is I actually asked the sunshine scooter who's from Miami just in case you might ask me that question so I have an answer Miami played the B of Bucknell and Bucknell upset them talk about a team coming out of left field pulling off an upset even back then but who would have guessed how much this game in the college football world would change since then he'll hand it off that's a nice tackle there by the senior Christino the spread era over the years has always grown offensively but I've been always impressing defenses that really build their defense to play in space still have an ability to be sound at the line of scrimmage and defend a oh the sack is made there by the Freshman it just looked like the quarterback was holding on to the ball bit too long that time allowed the defense to be able to get the pressure and they come up with a first sack of the game he's got an opening watch out he's got great speed the returner brought down sets up the next Drive the Tigers offense out there for their first possession well it's not easy to narrow down the impact players just a few guys but what do you expect from them today well we got guys that can make plays as well as anybody in the country on both sides of the ball that's why I think this matchup is so exciting two good teams with great individual players caught on the outside it's more getting set here's second down defense trying to Jam these receivers at the line out of the shotgun he hands it off tackle behind the line it's a loss of two that was that excellent linebacker with a clear path to one in pound heill quickly you know I think one of the great things about watching this guy play all year is his vision he just has great instincts that time the defensive line ate up freed up the linebacker to get into the back field and the result is a tackle for a loss for the back cson getting set with a first and 10 [Applause] now here's some pre- snap movement in the back field looking to throw it on first down looks toward the Seline finds the running back that broken tackle will earn him first down yardage defense kind of lost the running back here makes a nice catch and gets the first down in the process and they'll run it out of the shotgun and that's a solid gain before the defense able to bring him down here comes a crucial second down play every yard tough to find down here in the Red Zone K decides to keep it here tackled behind the line a loss of two BO a quarterback does everything right except pitch the football the defensive end's going to take him which is great that's what you want but you got to get that ball out quicker to not allow that defensive end to make that play just gives up on the play throws it away and now it's fourth down so here comes the kicking team on the field they'll settle for [Applause] three this one is right through so we have our first points on the board that makes it three nothing so after the field goal the kicker out there again to boot it away oh Chris it's a nice kick here to polish off that drive with at least three points up on the board and the returner is brought down and the MERS offense is back out on the field last time was a quick three and out can they get a drive going this time the pocket breaking down they pressure him and get him the loss back to the seven yd line second and long backed up at the seven yd [Applause] line quarterback drops back probing the secondary deep ball is caught for a huge gain here potentially a touchdown saving tackle but not before a long completion first down and 10 shotgun formation here's an inside give a change of Direction great job by the offensive line here opening up some holes and giving the running back room to run on first down plays like this can open up the playbook for the play caller allow him to make that defense think are they going to run maybe play action maybe throw the ball down field he'll get the first down yards before they finally bring him down so Clemson has the lead here Kirk as we head to the quarter break he reached the end of one in this quest to move one step closer to a national championship let's check out the stats so far the Mountaineers pick up enough yardage for a first down keep it on the ground there's the handoff and that run produces a decent game I'll take that every single time offensive line does a nice job up front this back's vision and ability to get positive yards by lowering his PS on full display right there and he's brought down but he does have enough for the first down look I realize on any play call that is properly executed they can go to the house for a touchdown but the runs that really make a game plan work are the ones where you get just what you need and he barely got the first down but he got it and the MERS are going to cash in here in the Red Zone snapping it from the red zone now looking to throw goes to his right side there for the completion and he's R out after a big game the offens will be set up with a first down and goal first down West Virginia on the ground trying to punch it in for the score and he takes it in for the score touchdown Mountaineers they were backed up to start the drive and some bold play calling great execution and reach the end zone you know it's easy to just kind of pull your horns in and get conservative when you pushed way back close to your own goal line but not this offense they came out showed the confidence that they have in their quarterback and it paid off nice touchdown Pi call team has come on the field now send this one away Fields it inside the 5yd line he'll be tackled at the 18 that's good coverage there okay that Clemson offense heads back out onto the field last time out they moved the ball well but had to settle for a chip shot field goal makes the catch down field and he breaks clear down the right side it's a foot race takes it all the way to the house touchdown Tigers this guy can do it all we've seen him go behind coverage and make plays down field we can see him catch the ball underneath just like this when he catches a football he is so dangerous after the catch this one leads him into the end zone for the six points p is good so the score is 107 now now the kickoff team is out on the field he'll bring it out from his end zone he'll be tackled at the 18 that's good coverage [Music] there and the maters offense is back out on the field they were able to punch it in the end zone last time looking to do the same thing here to see if the defense can make adjustments just a small gain look at it second and nine see that's how you limit what an offense wants to do this time the defense just won the battle up front at the line of scrimmage not giving up any big plays everybody's Gap sound pressured and dropped back at that 8 yd line I can't believe the amount of pressure this defense is getting on this quarterback sack after sack boy you got to think about changing things up the snap count the scheme anything at all to help this offensive line they're overmatched so far in this game so a positive play C with the crossing rout this is the defensive communication the coaches were worried about in the game yeah it really is a challenge in this call when the offense goes with that deep Crosser that defense has to do a good job of communicating really keeping their head on a swivel and understand who's coming into their Zone that time they just lost the receiver and they gave up a big gain W I'm a big fan of that Jet Sweep motion like that it really forces a defense to stretch them out horizontally and can create some vertical offense they got some positive yards didn't quite get the first down but tell you what they've done planted a seed on this defense and they better defend this style of play moving forward offense getting set up here's second down there's the snap he's looking to throw it's a screen pass complete to the running back they bring him down but not before he gains first down yardage Chris that's another positive game for this offense and this quarterback continues to show why he's had such a great year this year when he has time to throw he gets his feet set he's as accurate as any quarterback in the country the freshman's able to get home with a sack what a great play Here by a Clemson Defender makes you think of all these great Clemson Defenders they've had over the years of the fridge or dayquon Bowers Vic Beasley Brady Jarrett of course most recently miles Murphy who got drafted just a few years ago always great defensive lineman allows this defense to be athletic and with players like this it's just a defense you do not want to face intercepted picked off by the defense it's third and long so as an offensive coordinator you can either play a conservative or trust your quarterback and take a shot down field they elect the ladder and it ends up backfiring them they're going to run it here they stop him after a 6yd game so second and four and the clock stops now for the two-minute warning chance to strategize here before we reach halftime second down play coming up from the shotgun drops back looking for an open man and the pass is intercepted a takeway for the defense follows the pick with a nice return before finally being brought down he didn't really seem to feel like he had anybody open and just puts it up in the air and the defense says thank you we'll take it the West virgin offense is back out on the field if they want to cut into this lead before halftime they have to work quickly now the gain is four so it's second and six quarterback drops back trying to create outside the pocket now hit as he releases it and the pass ball is incomplete Mobility can be a blessing or a curse for some backs sometimes they feel that they can make a play on every single opportunity because they have such speed instead of just getting down or throwing it away they try to force the issue this one almost backfires on him as he tried to squeeze that throw in he's lucky he didn't throw an [Applause] interception the mounts will look to convert here on fourth down and he's throwing forward on fourth down pass is broken up turnover on down what a stop fresh set it Downs for the offense first [Applause] down look him out throwing here to start the drive it's an out route the catch made Oh What A Move goes right through the tackle he's got room to run now first and 10 play coming up off the play fake looking to throw fires it to the Wi out makes the catch can he get in and he scores touchdown Clemson well that's a well oiled machine right there everyone on this offense has been a scar in their rolls when they're rolling like this results in quick and positive results and the point after is good getting set to kick the ball off now he's going to bring it out of the End Zone from a couple yards to be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team and the West Virginia offense is back out on the field time is running out before halftime to cut into this now two-possession lead oh he can't hold on first down screen is incomplete this is the one thing I love about this running back is his ability to get involved in the pass game runs a great route just doesn't come down with a catch here's the second down play and he's back to throw again after that incompletion on first down and now the defense will call a time out here something they didn't like about that look and they'll make an adjustment for this important play so a tricky situation here third and very long inside your own 20 how much of a risk do you take you know this defense could be very here's the throw deep downfield that one Falls incomplete they tried to press it deep but now it brings up fourth down and the Mountaineers will bring their punt team onto the field and he'll kick it away now for the second time returner decides to fair catch this and the powerful Clemson offense is back out there offense protecting the lead here but they've been playing so well let's see if they go for more before [Applause] halftime physical defending that one Falls incomplete brings up second down and the quarterback drops back looking for an open man and he lofs it deep over the middle tackled immediately but not before he gets the ball inside the 20 the offense will call a timeout that's their second of the half big guys up front lined up it's first down and he'll set up to throw on the run here lets it Go finds an open Target on the left side and finally tackle him down at the 2 yd line what a play on that completion so two big plays in a road the defense is reeling here now it's first and goal they try to muscle toward the end zone on the ground muscles across the goal line touchdown Tigers Chris we get so caught up in this era of a spread of throwing the football in the quarterback and the receivers this is a great example of the value of having a running back that has a nose for the end zone and can take it in for a touchdown Virginia he's going to return it from Deep In The End Zone tackled at the 12 Coach wishes he left that one in the end zone and the MERS offense is back out on the field we'd expect a prudent decision here backed up near their own End Zone just and he Lofts it toward the sideline and it's caught way downfield inside the 35 touchdown West Virginia made the defense look slow that time love to watch this quarterback go out and in this kind of situation he's doing a great job of ignoring the scoreboard and feeling a sense of pressure to have to play with more urgency right now he's executing we're only in the second quarter plenty of time to get back in this game he'll return it from inside the five be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team the offense comes back out there not much time left perhaps just time for a couple plays before the half they'll keep it on the ground running back has the hand off he breaks into the clear heads out of bounds after a solid gain more than enough to pick up a first down one play already to the 46 yd line it'll be first down there's the snap looking to throw the ball incomplete with 4 seconds remaining time for just one more play everything about this play tells you about today's offenses and what they're asking out of their running backs you can't just be a guy who runs the football anymore you have to be able to catch it as well and he didn't do a very good job of it on this play and the defense able to hold him there to a short gain and that will do it for the first half here Kevin Connors now has our halftime update the Mountaineers will kick it off to begin the second half and here's the return from inside the five stop at the 22 that's pretty solid coverage there okay the Clemson offense heads back out onto the [Applause] field first play of the drive they're going to throw the football and it's incomplete the defender arrived the same time as the football and now it's second [Applause] down quarterback drops back from the shotgun dump ball caught by the running back and they get some positive yards here but just from sitting up here looking down Chris I kind of have a sense that they wanted a little bit more on that play not going to be easy here backed up a long way to go for a first down throws it to the right the ball is picked off he's got some room and some blockers here at the 20 touchdown Mountaineers and the defense joins the party with a pick six well the takeaway and the touchdown that is just a dream play any Defender here well let's start with the interception I just love the fact that he got his eyes turned around found the football and then has the athletic ability to be able to secure it then he goes back to high school running back days and shows what he can do with the ball in his hands and takes it all the way back for a touchdown beautiful thing and the power from Clemson offense is back out there they have got to bounce back on this possession after throwing a pick six last time out here he's T to short of the 30 but that's good enough for a first down a running play gives the offense fresh set of downs and in first down they go right back to him and the Run moves the ball up to the 33 nice job here controlling the line of scrimmage by this offensive line the back does what he needs to do to get positive yards on first down quarterback looking to pass here on second down quickly that gain is good enough for a first down ball spotted up to 42 the Tigers come to the line to set a fresh set of downs a shotgun run call he test the middle there but yet nothing that back just had nowhere to go got to give credit to the defense and their run fits on that play quarterback looking to throw it on second down looking to set up a screen pass here and he heads out of Bounds at after aing a few yards just much like we saw in the first half this quarterback can put the ball right on the money and you know the defensive coordinator at halftime spent all the time he could with his secondary to come up with answers on how to try to slow this guy down and he gets nothing there the defense Rises up on third down and the Tigers will line up to punt it away lands at the five it doesn't check up bounces into the end zone for a Touchback and the maters offense is back out on the field this offense scorts the defense with a lightning strike a oneplay touchdown in the last possession let's see if they can duplicate that magic here a pop pass on the Jet Sweep he sto him right at the 24 and that Jet Sweep action puts so much pressure on a defense you get so locked in on the ball attacking you downhill but when offense is sprinkle this kind of offense in it stretches this defense out wide and can create some vertical seams for big plays looking to pass here on second down running back grabs it on the screen they bring him down blocker is not much help on the screen there he's short of the first down the defense is getting pressure on the quarterback they got a little bit fooled here by the screen play nice positive gain for the offense and they pick up the first on the ground and they'll stop him just short the mark good out for it but the defense holds now it's fourth down talk about aggressive the head coach keeping the offense on the field inside their own 30 here we go on fourth down and he's not going to get there the defense and makes a huge fourth down stop on a second there's a Timeout on the field the coach wants the officials to take another look at that one thinks he might get an over turn got it so the challenge doesn't work that'll cost the head coach a timeout we'll see if that comes into play later in the ball game first play of the drive they'll come out throwing pulls it in it's Moore refusing to be brought down before game in first down yardage they bring him down but the veteran quarterback shows off that trademark arm strength hand off from the shotgun tackled behind the line it's a aw him two coming to the line on second down this is important they want to avoid a third and long quick throw caught on the left side and he'll make his way out of bounds after gaining decent [Applause] yardage so Clemson has the lead here Durk as we head to the quarter break and as we reach the end of three time is running out it is crucial contest for both his buram to stay alive in the Quest for a national championship let's check out the game summary before we move on GRS back needing a third down completion here touchdown Clemson this offense really clicking well they began with great field position and that didn't take long at all Curry well that's how you take advantage of an opportunity your defense sets you up in great field position you're not looking for a field goal you're looking for a touchdown give the crit to this offense group being aggressive and punching it in return starts from inside the five tackled at the 22 good job by the coverage [Applause] team the West Virginia offense is back out on the field remember last time he went for on a fourth down and got stopped the opponent went right down the field see if they can recover from that here he finds some space and they finally make the stop but that's a huge gain in the scramble he found some space and just went for it big chunk gain in the first play of the drive sets him up near Midfield in first and [Applause] 10 quarterback drops back from the shotgun looking for a receiver hasp can he get in no stopping him takes it all the way touchdown Mountaineers p is good makes it a three-point game 3128 kickoff team let's see if they give the return an opportunity to bring this [Applause] backin Fields it just outside the goal line to be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team and the first play of the drive now coming up from the 17 yd [Music] line on First and 10 they'll look to throw it oh they've got him for a sack a big play made by the Junior nothing is more gratifying for a defense to be able to sit back and play zone and still get pressure on the quarterback with your defensive front back goes in motion now let's see how the defense adjusts that's going to be incomplete a lot of contact no flag brings up third down third no press here the defense backing away now in third and very long looking to throw quarterback moving out of the pocket trying to create that's a nice scramble there a big gain but not enough for the first down the Tigers will bring their punt team on the field now they're going to kick it away with a second time he's got some daylight turning on the speed good effort by The Return Man they get him down but that's a solid gain in the return and the West Virginia offense is back out on the field looking for some space it's Williams you know in the era that we live in right now everybody wants has spread the field R try to create space try to create one-on-one matchups and the defense has countered over the years by trying to play out wide but here's a great example the defense has the ability to play wide but still be solid at the line of scrimmage not give up big run plays Drive stays alive with that first down completion hand off here from the shotgun only a small gain now looking at second and nine and he drops back in the gun catch made on the out route defense makes the stop very close to a first down the key here Chris is the timing by the quarterback the fact he got the ball out quickly gave his receiver a chance one more hitch or a slight hesitation and that's an incompletion or an interception receiver looks it in it's complete touchdown West Virginia and they'll clean the fourth quarter lead KK this quarterback told us this is my time to shine a playoff game he has gone out and back that up so far yeah he's done everything that's been asked of him and more just a great job of getting into a rhythm really tough to defend right now the defensive Port you can see him down there he's throwing his headset he's frustrated he's got to come up with some new wrinkles to try to slow this guy down okay the Clemson offense head back out on the field we're coming off a quick three and out so looking to put something together on this drive with a little more urgency caught by the back behind the line of scrimmage and the broken tackle there produces a solid game one thing I love about this bat is how he gets involved in the passing game nice catch here we reached the two-minute warning now can this offense Come Away with a late comeback Victory second down we're going to throw it it's complete and uses his speed to pick up solid yardage and now from the pistol formation first on First and 10 looking to throw the sure hands it's Johnson and a quick timeout call by the offense after the play trying to preserve as much clock as possible Clemson getting set with a first and 10 coming up5 from the gun he looks for an open man dumps it down to the back caught he get him down but not before he gets to the plus 38 now they've got to hustle to the line and get [Applause] set first first down looking to throw the football and he's got it they bring him down but that's a solid gain on the play and the Tigers come to the Line run the hurry up for first down back to throw again that's C it's more the offense will wisely spend a timeout after the play clock Management's going to be very important here in the final minutes Clemson now operating in the Red [Applause] Zone but go with the ground game here running back takes the hand off they finally Coral him at the one just love watching this back Lun Gets behind that offensive line lowers his pads and get a nice solid game and it's incomplet was looking for the End Zone well this is it late in the game really tight situation this is what separates a good quarterback from a great quarterback can he come up with the play to keep this drive alive oh and he's dropped it he could not hang on for a touchdown my goodness time running down they'll go for it here on fourth down they need to convert he'll drop back running out of time in the pocket and he's sworn by the pass rush a sack to end this drive instead of getting points here and going for the field goal this offense decides to get aggressive and the offensive line gives out the sack it looked like they miscommunicated the defense to their credits able to get after the quarterback and they come up with not only a stop but now they get the ball back themselves and now a time out now taken by the defense trying to preserve as much clock as possible for their offense and the Mountaineers come into the final minute of play just trying to run the clock out the offense will quickly spend a timeout here after the play Time Out West Virginia so this one is tucked away time for victory formation man the quarterback just takes a knee that's a great performance in a pressure moment but now the job gets even more exciting even bigger they go on to the national championship game and play for that Trophy and this is a new era I mean think about the weeks the amount of games that these guys have been able to play and they be able to accomplish this to get to the National Championship that says everything about the endurance of this football team both mentally and physically and they get one more hurdle to see if they can become the national champs
