good morning DJ and PK it's 975 The Zone welcome in on a Friday morning well the NFL is underway that was a thriller Ravens had their chances man they had their chances and worthy wow I mean you know he's fast to Texas how much is he going to translate uh two touchdowns blown coverage give him the ball you don't have to throw it to him just find a way to get a guy who's that fast and give him the ball the Chiefs find a way to win 2720 they beat the Ravens in a rematch of the AFC title game see if show a hands who would be shocked if those two met in the playoffs again this year not at all uh you know the Bengals and the bills may have something to say about it maybe somebody new will surprise us who knows we got more football tonight it's the Eagles and the Packers the NFL is in Brazil and Jordan love is playing so we got that and we got BYU football tonight at SMU so let's start there with the offensive coordinator Aaron rodrik and then Utah offensive coordinator Andy lwig get is ready for tomorrow's game with Utah and Baylor but let's start first with A-Rod thoughts on Jake's performance first week out uh thought he played a really solid game did a nice job took care of the ball uh was accurate um solid start what it like to have JoJo Phillips in the wide receiver on first play out I think it was two Targets two touchdowns yeah he's a he's an explosive player and and we've known that since he got here um just needed a little time to develop he was a basketball player play in high school I think he played one year of high school football so when he got here he's pretty raw as far as his football knowledge goes but he is uh getting better every day what' you like from TJ Woods in the Run game in the offensive line I thought they were solid too you know we we uh 179 yards rushing was solid start um we left a few yards out there I think we can do better but um off to a good start I was pleased with our ability to move the chains and keep drives alive and um did some good things is that the plan going forward to continue to split the reps with LJ and inle like that yeah you're going to see both those guys all year you'll still you'll still see miles as well I thought miles did a really good job in the time that he got in there and um and we plan on playing Pokey this year too do C Ball four of those guys cuz all four guys can contribute but they're elusive in their own way yeah I think I would say they're all you know they're all more similar than they are different though I mean they they each maybe they each have a few things they do differently but um but they can all run the whole off defense you know we want three skilled backs guys that can run it uh guys that can catch out of the back field and guys that are good blockers and that's the way to get on the field here at running back what takeaways um did you like from the offense what think you trying to improve this week going in SMU well we we need to finish those two drives in the second quarter you know I thought that was one thing we could have done better and then um no turnovers was one of the highlights of the game but we we did put the ball on the ground twice and luckily we got we got him back um so we got to that's something we can work on did pretty good describe the leadership from a guy like Caleb etn who maybe didn't have the best season he wanted to but then was outstanding on Saturday he was he played well I was proud of him you know he um like a lot of our players you know Jake's one of them we learned a lot of tough lessons last year and um you know now now is the time to show that we've learned from our mistakes in the past you know and um I think Caleb played a really solid game you know hasn't arrived yet or anything like that but it was off to a good start and what I expected him to do a lot of fans give fans perspective a lot of people don't get the chance to see what it's like year or two you know after coming in as being a transfer playing now at the 25 level just talk about that transition for a player you know in your well every year you know the game slows down as you play more and then the game really slows down as you play more excuse me you play more in the same offense you know I think um it's one thing to be you know a sophomore junior but when you played three or four years in the same off uh you know you can you have a chance for success and um I think that's the case with Caleb now it's his second year in the offense and it's his third or fourth year of college football and so I expect him to just keep getting better you're play call and I've described it you know with play action like take a candy from a baby very aggressive play calling what's it like to do that with multiple weapons and wide receiver and tight well that's part of what we want to do here is we want to run the football we want to throw it down the field and we want people to have to defend all of our skill players we don't want to be a team where uh you we want you to have to honor everybody that's out there anybody on the field might touch it I think in other programs there might be like this is the designated guy that can go for 100 every week when you look at the wide receiver room any one of those guys can go all for that how Dynamic is to have those guys in that room yeah that's a good point they we want you know all those guys are going to have to know that one game it might be your night another game might be the other guy's night um and I think all those guys understand that and they all just want to win and as long as we stick together as a team um we got a great chance to win a lot of games this year how excited you to get Darius last or back this week very Darius is a good player uh and he's again he's one of those transfers that's second year in this offense now fourth year of college football I expect him to have a good year what have you seeing on film from M's defense very good defense uh very athletic um they they know what they're doing they're really good at their system um excellent team I mean it's a big big step up from from uh you know what we've been dealing with what we had to deal with last week um and we got a we got a big Challenge on our hands last thing for me off topic question what's your favorite road you know game snack to have when you're out there Co Road game snack oh man um I don't know usually just uh probably the gummy bears that they leave on my on my seat on the plane I I like those what were your takeaways for from the two rule changes the headset communication with the quarterback and the iPads how did you feel the first game um it was great you know I thought things went really smoothly with the headset first of all we didn't have any hiccups there um and that was nice to be able to talk to the quarterback during the game I try not to talk too much cuz I don't want to be I don't want him thinking about too many things but you know it's nice to be able to call a play and give him a little reminder um before the snap um and then the iPads that's I mean it's amazing you can watch pretty much the whole series most most of the time I was able to watch the whole series and then talk about it with our staff or with our players um now the other team could do that too so but uh I really enjoyed it and looking forward to becoming more efficient with it as we go along is that just going to prepare guys at this level for the professional level that the mics and the heless and iPads now I think so I mean yeah there's there's some similarities there sure and um I think a lot of the things we do are very Pro style so I hope that you know our quarterbacks you know one of the we're intentional about trying to develop quarterbacks for the NFL so that's part of it but uh yeah I think I think that you're going to see that um uh just a lot of growth in college you know as people learn how to use those tools more efficiently you probably saw the news J hall got picked up by the he actually told me on Friday that he thought that's what was going to happen and uh you know he didn't want to jinx it but he said I'm pretty sure that's what's happening it might be a couple days but so I was excited for him yeah it's a good good situation for him how did sunny marus to see he kind of performing his first college start solid job yeah yeah he's he's been uh he's been really steady in Camp and you know was his first game so there's a few things to clean up but um thought he played well there's Aaron rodk BYU offensive coordinator now here is Andy lwig Utah offensive coordinator how are you feeling about your offense and and maybe where where do you need to improve you need to I think we need Improvement in every area uh I think I stated at the conclusion of fall Camp I'm confident in the direction of the offense and the Improvement that we've shown but in no way or means are we comfortable with where we are and uh good work today and look forward another day of work tomorrow cam took three hits late in the first half um on Monday or Thursday against Southern Utah what was your impression of those hits after watching tape and kind of getting um an angle for what happened yeah not I'm not fired up about it you got to we got to got to hook hook slide protect himself we always talk about protecting the ball protect the team quarter back protecting the team is protecting himself we don't want to uh lose that position um but the other end of that Spectrum would be that he gained a lot of confidence taking those hits and popping back up but uh we're going to try to minimize those absolutely how do you communicate that with him from because obviously it's balancing his Competitive Edge but also making sure he's healthy throughout the season yeah he he appreciates that he he approaches the game very much like a professional and knows we all want him around for the Long Haul he wants to be here for the Long Haul so I I'll see I I anticipate see an improvement with that in terms of protecting himself and uh he is competitive there's no doubt yeah that you've seen some live form of of Isaac how are you feeling about him and kind of where does he need to go to progress good oh he's got so much work to do but um what a what a difficult situation to take your first snaps in in uh in college football we're in what we call our last three trying to get some points there at the end of the half felt like we'd seen enough a cam and those were those were some difficult situations when everybody in the park knows you're throwing it and uh but I thought the one thing with Isaac he had some mishaps there's no doubt but he just kept battling back battling back I knew he had the turnover at the end of the first half but then came back at one point through six consecutive completions uh through the interception in the red zone that was unfortunate bad decision all that stuff but came right back the next next opportunity through a touchdown pass so he's got some real toughness about him I really respect that sorry as a play caller just following up on that how how much do you have to design plays to kind of help give him some confidence knowing that you he's being thrown into his first action as well yeah it's uh it's really not design it's the the very core of the offense is what we ask him to execute again the situation at the end of the first half is was not ideal for that's not the core those that's uh contingency offense but that was the situation that came about so he was inserted in that but when he went in in the second half it was we kind of scaled things back to uh basically our what we call our first week install play so need a good job how encouraged do you feel by what you saw saw in the Run game yeah it was it was a throw first game plan I thought we ran the ball efficiently there if you I'm sure you know a southern Utah was fully committed to stopping the run with nine ninan boxes creating a lot of one-on ones on the outside which we were able to exploit uh I think I think I was pleased with Mikey Mitchell his his what he showed obviously Deon Stanley out of the back weather as a receiver and also running the ball did some good things got a lot of faith and confidence in mckyer Charlie vinon and Jason or Jordan GL uh J Jaylen thank you uh glove um and I think the o line is really going to be something special on this football team Kyle sort of mentioned that he felt like you guys sort of put Isaac in a weird position the way he was put in there at the end of the second half what was the reasoning B putting him in at that moment yeah as I just stated we we'd seen enough of Camy just thrown five touchdowns we're in a situation where we're going to throw it coach we wanted to score points at the end of the first half that was the situation so I I I don't I don't feel bad about putting Isaac in that situ I wanted I wanted I've seen enough a cam at that point what do you think of djn Stanley's game and how can his role continue to expand uh I thought his game was uh lights out uh obviously there's a couple of those routes that uh any one of us could have gotten open on but one once he catches the ball he's got tremendous speed and does a great job with it was very pleased with his touches from the back field did a really good job carrying the ball and we'll just try to be creative with the way we get him as touches cuz he's not the prototypical tailback that's going to line up with his toes at 7 and 1 half and run the ball downhill so got to be a little creative with them there are the offensive coordinators hey reminder we are brought you in part by Teton wealth Ethan Millard with Teton wealth will be live in studio with Hans and Scotty G Monday to help you with your retirement plan tune in or visit reti ton.com coming up next Barry traml is talking Big 12 Football stay with us DJ and PK proudly presented by our title sponsor Black Desert Resort Utah's Premier golf resort we're joined Now by Barry traml ready to talk all things Big 12 he's a sports columnist for the Tulsa World Barry good morning how's it going in Salt Lake gu I hear it's hot up there it has been hot little smoky too fires in Idaho and Oregon blowing smoke in here yeah yeah I think it's going to be hotter in Salt Lake than in Waco on Saturday weird that's not what we would assume very weird very weird this is a big weekend for the Big 12 a league that has been pegged as the third or fourth best league in a two League World so if the Big 12 wants to make a splash they're playing a couple ACC teams three big 10 teams and three SEC teams setting aside Houston and Oklahoma that could get ugly very quickly do you expect some of these teams to break through and and have big wins uh three opportunities to win against the Big 10 could they could they go two- one or three and0 there well you know I'm not too confident in Iowa State they've I love the Cyclones but they've just been very uh sort of pedestrian against Iowa for about eight years you know Matt campell's only beaten the Hawkeyes once yep he's the most successful coach in Irish State history and he's beaten them once um Anything could happen in Lincoln with Colorado Nebraska so I think I think you had have to say that's a that's at least a chance and then I think Kansas ought to be Illinois so I mean I think they got a fighting chance to uh get the jump on the Big 10 and when you get to the SEC Oklahoma State ought to beat Arkansas um Houston's not beating Oklahoma and then Arizona State Mississippi state is uh strikes me as sort of a tossup game I didn't think sundevils were going to be any good at all but they look good last week so they got a Fighting Chance uh none of these games are what we'd call I don't think nationally Marquee or nationally relevant Colorado Nebraska is sort of a you know Carnival Sideshow type game but it's not terribly gerain to the end of the season season so it's not like you know if this was if this was last year and Texas was playing Michigan that would be a you know sort of a Bedrock game for the Big 12 but it is good opportunity and they need to take advantage of it because it is a weekend when a bunch of these teams could win I was listening to a national show and they were having on the uh people from uh Arkansas and they were really pumping them up over they scored 10 straight possessions against Pine Pine Bluff for what it's worth but they're talking about patrino being there and building them up uh green the quarterback who we saw over here at Boise on our side of the country is now there they have a running back Jackson who played at the U and the offensive line Pitman went and revamped that and I guess from where you guys are or we still water it's only three-hour drive to where they play at uh Arkansas and but it's the first time in 44 years that they're playing and it used to be a rivalry they said listening to what they were talking about and it's from an Arkansas perspective but they felt like they had a shot as far as going and beating the Cowboys I'm wondering and you thought that it that the Cowboys should win do you think it' be an opportunity there for I guess maybe you can consider it an upset as far as Arkansas because I think it's a it's a it would be a blow to the big 12's image if they lost that game yeah no I do think Arkansas can win you know they they went 4 and eight last year two straight winning seasons under Sam Pitman I think nine and four seven- six then they fall to 4 and eight last year but they played five games that went to the wire right they got beat 24-21 at Alabama they got beat by three at LSU they went to Old Miss and got beat I think it was seven so they clearly had a pretty good team they just got lost a lot of close games um so they could win this game I think and of course with the portal who knows but Oklahoma state is so veteran and so well drilled that it would be a massive disappointment to forget the Big 12 to OSU if they lost this game so um I thought OSU looked good last week South Dakota State's a real team it's a real program um I bet they had I bet they had uh 4,000 visiting fans from South Dakota state that's more than TCU or Baylor or all kinds of people bring um to still water so everything about them the Press Corp was bigger than this was not a onea you could tell this was not a onea program this a legitimate uh program so ohu dominated the game controlled the game so I thought that was a really good sign for the Cowboys but Arkansas is going to be a step up in athletic ability and and lots of things and it won't be I don't think it'll be easy so it would be a nice win any chance you get to beat the SEC the the Big 12 needs to capitalize the ACC and the Big 12 fighting for the right to be number three and SMU is now an ACC team that's I'm going to I'm going to need a minute to get used to that but they're playing BYU who's a big 12 team and I've had one year to get used to that can the Cougars go in and win at SMU what do you think I think they can I watched SMU maybe all the most of the die hards College Football watched SMU play Nevada we thought we weren't getting any games in week zero we got two good games and that was one of them um don't I will say this this will not be no matter what happens this will not be as good as that 1980 or 81 Holiday Bowl with SMU and BYU when the Cougars I think it's 46 45 I think if I'm right yeah so um it won't be that good but I'm not sure that SMU as good as everybody thinks they are you know a couple people said hey they're a dark horse to win the ACC which um maybe they are but that's because somebody's got to get to Charlotte you know everybody looks bad except Miami so I going into the season I thought well that's that's an L for for BYU but now I'm not so sure so I'm uh I'm willing to give the Cougars a chance down there I think they're going to have to play well smu's quarterback Preston Stone does not look as good as we thought we saw him last year in Norman and they played pretty good against U but they didn't look the same against Nevada now Nevada went and beat Troy at Troy last week so I think Nevada's better than we thought one of those portal teams that that may have struck struck at Rich yeah but I like I like uh SMU to win but I'm I got more hope for the Cougars now than I did two weeks ago based on last week or based on SMU or both based on SMU yeah based on SMU okay yeah I don't know anything about I didn't put much stock in the you know the Southern Illinois game right you know I I cut BYU some slack for not blowing them out because I mean you guys help me in my memory I don't think BYU ever blows out one of those one doublea opponents they never beat somebody 62 to7 you know it's always 31 to9 or 35 to 11 or something so I'm not holding that against him I'm I'm the jury in my mind still out on BYU sure yeah I think that's an accurate assessment that's why it's a big game for them and they're they three non-conference games obviously they already played one and then because they had such U uh outstanding contracts uh not great but literally outstanding with the uh Independence they have two Road games and they play at Wyoming next week which is not ideal uh for a team that's trying to get the bull eligibility we'll see what they can do as far as that goes but there's no question the jury is still out and this is a game that will provide some more evidence for the jury to make their decision uh to stay yeah I like now I will say this the schedule's lighter than I thought when I saw that I thought goly well smu's tough and nobody really wants to go to laramy but SMU is not as good as I thought and Wyoming clearly has all kinds of issues so I think you know if BYU can can win this game I think they're going to be three and0 going into the Big 12 and then all of a sudden you know they got a they got a pretty wide open uh landscape there to get some things done is there anybody in the Big 12 that has really changed your opinion of them with their performance week one For Better or For Worse or or maybe you just see them differently um I was not crazy about TCU at Stanford the other night um they won I was pleased they won but I didn't think they looked very good they kep unless Stanford's done a makeover I thought the frogs should have handled them a little bit better uh let's see I actually you know I know Arizona putting up all those points and McMillan and and F TAA and all that I know faf I know they the the offense is unbelievable but I thought screwing around with New Mexico was not necessarily a good sign and I was a little disappointed in West Virginia I knew that would be tough um but I did they didn't put up the fight against Penn State I thought they would and I thought Texas Tech was just an Abomination not being able to slow abalene Christian down at all um so those were the ones I thought you know Kansas state was messing around with Tennessee Martin but that's K State they often in September they often get off to a slow start that's just what they do so that didn't really bother me too much um that's the those are the ones that come to mind I guess and with the portal and the new way football is developed probably shouldn't probably should be very guarded against quick reactions because you're going to have some games like that I I assume as it stands right now there's no big 12 team that is ranked in the top 10 do you think that's an issue I don't think it's an issue um you know here sometimes people still think the AP pole I still think it's 1974 we got to live and die with this AP pole we do a we do a video show with the Tulsa World staff and one of the questions this week reactions to the to this week's AP poll and I remember thinking holy crap what do you mean my r i I haven't even looked at the AP pole I don't care what the AP pole is and I think Utah OSU K State whoever you know throw a lot of teams in there if they take care of business they're going to be in the top 10 pretty soon um I would have guess the Oklahoma State Utah winter is going to be in the top 10 after September 21 right if the winner of that game wins the next week I think that's the week Utah plays Arizona and OSU plays K State if if OSU or Utah if one of those goes two and 0 in those two weeks I mean they they could be in top seven or eight yeah so I don't think I don't I think that'll take care of itself I really do the pro the key for the big what the big 12 needs is they need two teams to really sort sort of you know brand themselves as Elite and brand themselves as National contenders and those things that would raise their chances of two teams in exponentially so that's what they really need you know in other words here's an example OSU Utah loser they need that loser to go on a big winning streak right you know get to Mid November at 8 and one or something that's what the big 12 need they don't need a bunch of six and3 teams in mid November yeah I totally agree with that but I thought you contradicted yourself a little bit there and I thought your second point was stronger with than your first one what I thought you said that was really on point was about getting the second team in and if they don't put any in the top 10 I don't see how a team that loses one of the handful of big games in the league is going to move up I think they're going to get punished this feels to me and you didn't go through it so that's probably why I see this different this feels to me like what the Mountain West went through in between 2000 and 2010 TCU Utah and BYU could all be good but none of them got ranked and the team that won got pumped up but meanwhile the Pack 12 or the Big 12 or the SEC teams when they lost like well they can't fall very far I mean they lost to the third team of the country how far are we going to move them down and it feels like that's what they're going to do with the SEC this year it feels like this sets the stage for how the SEC gets at least three if not four teams into the playoff and it's not on the AP poll but it feels like the AP poll sets the tone and the committee will make some changes but they're largely going to follow it yeah I now I disagree about the AP poll's relevance to the committee I don't think there's any in fact I think they sometimes look down at it mockingly even because because um the AP poll you know the AP poll forever looked really good only because it was compared to the coaches poll you know that that's where the AP got its standings because the coaches were even worse but now you got something that actually you got a lot of things over the years in recent years from computer rankings BCS all that stuff but now with the committee rankings it's really a it's a compilation where people whether you like it or not they disgust it and they sit around and they vote and it's it's something that's at least thoughtful and considered the AP poll never has been that it's 60 something guys or gals voting and on their own and put it together I don't think that the AP poll will have a big effect on that I think you need you need a couple of teams like I said to do well go into November strong and then you got a fight and chance the other the other way you get two teams in is if a Utah OS UK State whoever goes into the Big 12 title game yeah pretty at 11 and one ranked eighth or seventh or ninth or wherever they might be ranked I don't think the committee will knock them down if they get beat by a nine and3 Arizona or whoever because we've got a little bit of history on that you know TCU 12-0 in 22 gets beat by K State in the Big 12 title game not only did they make the play off they didn't even fall in the rankings they stayed number three they went in number three they stayed number three and I I think the committee is going to give some favor to highly ranked teams that lose in their conference title game because that's an extra game that they played that other people didn't have to play so I think I think the big 12's got two fairly narrow but at least two Avenues to get two teams in and the way this season's gone so far it's looking better because the ACC is such a mess that they're not really fighting the ACC for a second burst I don't think other than Miami if Miami happens to lose in the title game I mean I I don't see a team outside of Miami that could anybody could even think would be elite in the uh coming out of the ACCC he's Barry traml he writes for the Tulsa World he joins us every week to talk Big 12 Football Barry thanks a lot thanks for coming on we appreciate it we'll talk to you next week all right guys see you next week DJ football and talking Utah State and USC he's going to be on the call on that game on the Big 10 Network Yogi Roth next djpk it's 975 The Zone we are joined Now by Yogi Roth you used to know him as Yogi Roth of the Pack 12 Network now he's Yogi Roth of Y option.com and Big 10 Network analyst and it's part of his work with the Big 10 Network he's calling the Utah State USC game this weekend Yogi good morning it is a beautiful morning in Southern California and I'm sure it is where you guys are as well I miss you I miss that sound of that Stadium but I got a little taste of the state of Utah this weekend right in in the game that you just referenced exactly the Aggies and the Trojans and speaking to a couple of uh former agies here and about the game this weekend all they did was shake their head and say did you see that LSU game it looks like SC might have fixed some of their problems and then they had no further comment on the game yeah I think that's fair to say I mean I think I'm not a big rankings guy early in the season but if you did like a power rankings in the Big 10 which is basically you know almost half the football uh with with 18 teams in that League at the at the power level I'd put SC at the top like Ohio State struggled in the first half Penn State looked good against a West Virginia team on the road got to give him credit there Michigan struggled offensively in the passing game like SC had the most complete Game it wasn't perfect I mean they're not perfect they'll give up some stuff on Saturday night but they are a dramatically improved team a more physical team a more connected team and there's a there's a bunch reasons why that we'll talk about on Saturday night I'm happy to talk about here but yeah this is uh this isn't Pete Carrol's Trojans but it wasn't last year's Pack 12 Trojans either that uh you know only won a handful games yeah you talk about not being last year's SC team was a bit of disappointment no question about that and I got to admit Yogi when I turn on the game and I see LSU on the first possession go right down the field I'm thinking oh here we go again now obviously they didn't even score any points I think SC got a fourth down stop in inside the 10an or somewhere uh remember I can't remember specifically but until that point it looked like LSU was rolling and then you I I expected Moss to be good uh the thing that I took away was individually as you talk about not being last year's team at least in one game anyway the defense looked a lot better what's going on there yeah it's a it's a great Point uh we're going to meet with d Lyn the defensive coordinator tomorrow morning I'm going to ask him and Lincoln Riley about that drive because felt IL to you as the game was as that drive went on I kept imagining like what is going on in Mason Cobb Eric Gentry Jamal Muhammad like the players that were there last year what's going on in their head right they got six new defensive starters that all came through the portal but there's another five guys that started that were there last year part of that defense that that M struggled all year and gave up a ton of explosive plays and you drives like what we saw on that opening drive and I asked one of the players on Tuesday I was at of practice and I said said did you ever you know what what was the vibe like I asked Kamari Rams he's one of the new players there at the starting safety and he goes you know I don't know about the guys in the past but the guys that were here were just kept saying hey just keep believing in it and I personally think that if they give up a touchdown there the vibe on that sideline might be a version of God I don't know if we are as special as we think we are I don't know if we're as improved as we say we are when they get that stop I think immediately go from hoping your defense was better to at least as a player you know you are and that's a big difference you know coach Carol taught me that 20 years ago of like the great teams that's the difference hoping versus knowing and I think that first drive had a huge part in the rest of that side of the ball's confidence all day um I probably wouldn't have made her break broke the game dramatically but I do think the psychological element was was massive it was a huge stop uh and they kept doing it right and I think they adjusted that first drive I was charting this morning I they Blitz four out of their first I think seven or eight plays and then they don't Blitz a lot the majority of the game because they were getting beat you know they just couldn't get home they they were you know giving up obviously uh completions with there's a lot of cushion and I think you saw Danton Lynn and that scheme evolve as the game evolv the funny thing is I think that it was more about SC being big and big moments than it was about SC dominating and limiting the yardage and all that but it didn't translate to points and there were other times where you'd look at them and think well they're pretty ethic they're pretty good and and then a Crossing route I will never forget money Park seemingly running through the whole secondary and nobody putting a hand on him in that conference title game a couple years ago and here even though LSU piles up the yards in the big moments the SC defense delivered something they just it always seemed beyond their reach yeah well I think you know what you didn't see a lot of you didn't see a lot of unforced Errors right calling a bunch of the games last year and I know the player referencing with money Parks it felt like guys were sometimes out of position right or they were going for a big hit versus you know just a short tackle and I think that's a big difference for this team and they're going to get challenged again on Saturday night I mean Utah state will use every blade of grass at the Coliseum splits will be wide they'll really challenge the eyes with the Run game of sc's Defenders it it'll be a different game you know I'm not sure necessarily what'll happen to quarterback yet for Utah State but I I think that'll be a challenge they have all year long like I I don't expect them to be a top you know 10 defense in America like they're not Michigan they don't have those players um in my opinion but they're going to be dramatically improved I mean they should be a top 30 defense and if they are with the weapons they have on offense to your point like they're going to score Miller I mean he he's in the conversation among best quarterbacks in the country I mean you can't argue it anymore like it felt like he was kind of a you know part of the country felt he was a flash in the pan and it's like people forget that he was also a fourstar recruit and a huge get for SC same class as Caleb Williams same Elite 11 classes those two guys so I think they're they're real um I don't think that they're necessarily Ohio State or Oregon right now roster wise but God they'll be competitive in every game and and this is a team that could compete for a for a playoff BR for sure this is a general question and we were talking about this you know we watched U Florida State and dju as they call them and we you know on his third school and we saw him overthrow the Kid In The End Zone by it seemed like it was 15 yards over his head and and you're involved in this why do you think there's as many kids who have a nice High School career a star ranking all that stuff but yet they don't pan out at the college level yeah it's a great question it's a big reason why I wrote the book five star QB um and you go that look at that research there's up to today there's been 145 star quarterbacks the ranking started in 1999 only 20 have ever been drafted in the first round only seven were the number one overall pick and only one ever won a Super Bowl on his second team in year 13 and that was Matthew Stafford I say all those numbers because the definition of a fivar quarterback is you're going to come in and you are going to change the landscape of a program or a franchise and the reality is just it's just doesn't always happen that's just a fact doesn't mean that you're not a really good player doesn't mean you're not a great player in college but very rarely do these quarterbacks like dju meet other people's expectations and and they never ask for them and that was a big part of the book is just try to like showcase a little empathy like nothing bothers me more when I see all these memes of him on the internet I'm like well everybody typing like probably could throw the ball couldn't couldn't dream to overthrow a guy in the end zone let alone make it accurate so there there's a part of that that I think is a little frustrating I also am a big believer that like accuracy is is something that really can't be altered you know you look at the majority of quarterback there's been one guy that I've ever seen that's really changed his mechanics and went from being an inaccurate quarterback to being extremely efficient and he starts for the Buffalo bills right and you know and Josh Allen most guys struggle right Christian Hackenberg is an example wasn't a high completion percentage guy in high school um it's kind of struggled in that regard at a lot of places there's a million of examples in that regard and we said Tyler help me I guess grow would be a nice example for you guys in your backyard but most quarterbacks that's hard to do and for DJ in that program I'd imagine there's so much pressing happening now like the expectation the standard what they did last year uh and I think what we're seeing is kind of the truth around that team right now through two games is they're just an okay team you know I don't think they're a world beater they're not one of the top 30 teams in America right now I hope Mike norval gets it back on track but what we've seen in two games is that they're you know they're highly competitive but when they have to execute they just struggle there I don't think it's all on him you got to run the football you got to help him out you have to be complimentary and I think it's a really good college player we saw what he did last year at Oregon State under Jonathan Smith but I think from from the very beginning the expectations on most quarterbacks including him are are often ludicrous just because the number bear out that it doesn't happen what everybody thinks it's going to happen Yogi Roth joining us Big 10 Network and Y option.com tell us what you're doing with Y option.com you're into the season now a little bit you're probably getting a better feel for it uh what can people find there oh thanks man yeah we're we're loving it um you know when the Pack 12 kind of fell apart uh I I just kept going around the campuses you know us saw included and asked how you going to tell your players and your team stories like there's no big 12 Network for instance and and everybody agreed with the with the concept of we don't know and I just I think there's a window here for for us to kind of create something unique because I didn't want to abandon all the relationships that I had created over my time in the Pack 12 i' spent almost 20 years in this league and I had an inkling I was going to go to the Big 10 and I didn't want to just you know say goodbye to you know eight of them so or 10 you know whatever and I I just started competing and started thinking about what what could we do and I said all right these schools need options I need an option I need a job uh I love the concept of why option because it's one of the oldest West Coast offens principles and my name's Yogi so I called up Jim thorby who you guys know and hey do you want to start something unique and he jumped at it and Away we've gone and and the whole goal is to have conversation in college football through the lens of the West Coast so today like we've have conversation with Brian Howell who covers Colorado as well as anybody in the world to talk about the Nebraska game you know we're going to bring on you know I think uh you know Trent Bray Jake Dicker next week in advance of their rivalry games you know we'll get Cam rising out we'll get players and coaches from Utah on um just just to kind of celebrate the game and a if a team Pops in the Mountain West like we'll bring their coach on things like that just to kind of I think drive drive dialogue from this part of the country because I think the reality has been for my career you're often responding to narratives from another part of the country and they've never been out here let's just look at fine bomb in the South he goes off on Lincoln Riley all summer long it felt like and I'm like did that dude ever go to a practice like can he name more than five players like I I don't know maybe maybe he goes all the time then I'm not aware of it but the idea was the West Coast needs a lens and I hope that I'm trusted by that sandb and uh and I wanted to have create some agency and and you take control of my career a little bit and try to see if I can build something and it's been awesome man I gotta be honest like it's it's fun it's it's a lot of work uh a ton of passion and I hope people enjoy it if not I'd love your feedback and if so let us know what you enjoyed and we'll give you more of it I wish they would have made you commissioner of the Pack 12 maybe we'd still have our conference Yogi uh but uh they that didn't happen and and way we go I will say here locally I've listened to several because they come to my email so when I go to the gym I just click them on it's like a routine now and the Jake heaps one and obviously he has a connection here in more ways than one and that was just fascinating listening to him talk about growing up about going from Seattle to Portland to have a quarterback coach about his parents involvement and you know having known the story we know the story uh covering BYU at the time with the parents and all and being able to read between the lines or in this case listen between the lines of what he was saying I would I would advise all and any any fan doesn't matter but especially BYU fans to listen I actually listened to it twice just so I could make sure that I caught on what he was trying to say I thought that particular one that that podcast you did with him should be played in high schools and parents and colleges and listen to what the young man saying about what he went through because I thought it was really educational and in in some ways it was profound yeah thanks man uh I've known Jake since 09 when he was in high school and was the Elite 11 MVP and I think you're right he's uh his wisdom his ability to reflect and then share it's the reason why he's the head coach of Elite 11 now and impacting the game you know through you know his lens but also the the wisdom and the lens he's gleaned from so many others so I'm I'm fired up for him and and yeah I think I've heard a version of that with a lot of our episodes whether it was Pete Carroll or khil Tate talking about you know nil and and you know he's going to have to get paid now like H how does that even work and how did he deal with his own identity when you know his career was booming and then when he met you know the adversity that he met and and so on and so forth I mean we sat down with Miller moss and Dylan Gabriel and those are two of my favorite conversations just because of the humanity they both showcased and for Miller you know staying at the school that he loved and and we're keep doing that I just think that there's a home for thoughtful conversation and Sport I mean we created a whole media company it's called Best Coast media and our first offering is this year and it's y option but the idea would be like in three years what if we became a version of you know there's a lot of these whether that's cowards company or bar stool you name it but it's founded in thoughtful conversation versus I think oftentimes like screaming and yelling and things aren't based in fact first that they're only founded in opinions it's not a lot of a foundation and I'm going to try it you know I don't know if it'll work but it's been really fun so far and and we're kind of putting our heads down and I hope to pick it up and we're at a playoff game and you know the Big 12 Champion utel youths are playing the Big 10 Champion Oregon Ducks and we just have a heck of a Pack 12 party together man I do think that the way the media has gone that hot taks get clicks and they get viewers they get listeners and even the interview sessions have changed now you don't get to have a conversation 101 it's in a group somebody yells last question after 3 five or 8 minutes depending on the school or the pro team and you don't get the backstory and that matters because moments don't happen in a bubble there's stuff that leads up to them and newspaper writers and magazine writers used to write those features and tell those stories but how many players today even know what a newspaper or magazine is so many of those have gone away or if they're exist they've been greatly diminished so any chance you give to tell people a story and I think the first people to hit on this this is what ESPN's 30 for 30 are the backstory that sets everything up and the the Nicks Pacers rivalry why did that turn into a thing with Reggie Miller and Spike Lee we all know the moment Spike standing up and Reggie the choke sign but like that's so many people and they did such a great story my kid our old's kid wasn't alive for that he's a huge sports fan and he doesn't sit still and watch long like a lot of kids of his generation doesn't sit still and watch stuff but we were like 10 minutes in he goes Dad this is so good because it's that human human element there's still a moment to sing and guess a play call but there's also a chance to sell somebody's stories I think the more you do that uh the more you fill a void that's out there yeah I appreciate that I mean a huge part of um what I do when I talk to teams and locker rooms I do I was just down in Tucson doing kind of a media training talk with the team with with Brent Brennan's new Squad another big 12 team that is coming to town in the next couple weeks for you guys and I reminded them the same thing I tell everybody which is number one recruits are seen as athletes who have wear helmets so most people don't know what guys look like to your a ranking and now For Better or For Worse I think probably for better but you're seen as a transaction which is great because you're getting paid but I believe this and I said this on coward the other day I said all of us have to compete to take the off and humanized players where I felt like I've hopefully always done that in games but now like your your point is is so well spot on and people need to hear that because there there I think needs to be more access to players to a certain degree because you know people aren't going to be paying for interviews I think that was a trend early on in nil like I don't think you know the industry is built that way uh and we need to make sure that we're telling their stories I talked to Brian how about it on the podcast of Colorado you know players aren't really available there and I get it because they want to control the narrative and it's all going on their YouTube channel and and there's a there's a system behind all that that makes sense but in the same vein I only know three players on Colorado's team you know and it's you know the three that I'm referencing because they're always the ones that are out there I think there's something to be told or or to be said about telling other people stories and I think the same thing across the country around media availability like just sc's game I love what they've done at SC I mean there's probably 10 to 12 players available every week you know and you're just unearthing different stories and that's to the General Media and when you're calling a game kind of get everybody and Utah's always been great with us that goes to the Wayside especially now when you look at rosters in so many new faces coming from so many different schools you just got no shot and you're just call it's just number one he's AER transer from you what you know you know is a guy story he's got a family he's got a backstory and I think all of us it's kind of on and on the schools to make sure that they're available and on the players to know that that's how they get their stories told this is free media I tell them all the time I said hey I have to pay for PR sometimes and that's expensive like you guys get it for free so so make sure you take advantage of it Yogi we appreciate the time we're late we got a run but great having you on we look forward to talking to you again and we'll listen to you on the call Saturday night yeah hey good luck Baylor it's going to be a fun one this weekend cannot wait to tune in yep Baylor in Utah 1:30 Utah State and USC on the Big 10 Network with yogi at 9:00 mountain time when we
