15-year-old killed in early morning shooting in Newport News

We come on the air this afternoon with breaking news out of Newport News. A 15 year old boy is dead after an early morning shooting. Of course, we're thanking you for watching us here 13 news. Now at noon we got Alex Little Hills who's there in Newport News right now with the latest from police this afternoon, Alex. What have you learned? Good afternoon, Ashley Eugene. Yeah, actually police officers just took off the perimeter tape less than an hour ago. So there is really not much of an active scene here. There is one police car, but that is a very different look from the large significant active police presence that we have seen all morning here on Garden Drive and 16th Street. So we have been talking to uh the neighborhood about this recent tragedy and what they tell us is that every morning here at the corner of Garden Drive in 16th Street, there is a bus stop for Menschville High School and about every morning, each day there are about a dozen, 15, maybe as many as 20 kids waiting to take the bus to Menschville High School. Again, this is a quickly developing story with a lot of new details coming just within the couple of hours. But here is what we know so far. According to authorities, a shot spot radar picked up the first gunshot. Around 630 this morning, officers arrived here on scene, they found a 15 year old boy suffering from gunshot wounds. And as you mentioned, we have now learned that that 15 year old, that teenager has died from his injuries at the hospital. Now, we can also confirm this victim is a Menschville High student because Menschville has principal notified parents this morning, quote with a heavy heart of this incident and said members of the division's support and response team will talk to students and staff today. So on the investigation side, as of 12 o'clock today, there is no suspect in custody yet. Newport News chief Steve Drew believes this was also not a random act of violence right now. Uh, the the family that's lost a loved one city who's lost a, a young man. My heart goes out to, to them individuals here in this community. Um It's just, it's just tragic. I I don't know, I don't know if there are words to describe it. Police chief Drew also mentioned that there will be some kind of police response here. A renewed support around four o'clock today. More door knocking more just again, community support for the neighborhood that is dealing with this loss of life coming up later tonight. You'll hear from some of the that live nearby including Newport, New City councilman John Ely. He grew up just down the block and he shares his insight about this most recent tragedy in Newport News.
