the Deliverance is a new film directed by Lee Daniels on Netflix so today let's see if this film is worth your time hey everybody my name is Justin here I try to watch everything that hits theaters and on streaming services like Netflix if you guys are like me go ahead and hit that subscribe button down below and click that Bell notification for more up and coming content a family living in a home in Indiana discovers strange demonic occurrences that convinces them and the community that the house is a portal to hell you would think that a film that's almost 2 hours long with that synopsis would have a lot of terrifying moments and more of a focus on supposedly this portal to hell but it feels like that comes way too late in the film instead focuses on this family that is struggling with an abusive mother played by Andre day this is based on a true story she is violent to her children she snaps at them very quickly she finds it very easy in herself to hit her children she has three kids and also living with them is her mother played by Glenn cloes and there's just a really toxic relationship amongst everybody 2third of this movie is just looking at that relationship between the family and you have CPS involved you have her stumbling home from the bar and getting drunk not be able to pay for her house you see all of those effects on the children and how they want to be connected to their father they want to move away they're trying to save up so they could leave they're fed up with that relationship but throughout the film you have this relationship between Andre day and Glenn clo and how Glenn Clo's character the mother also treated her daughter like this now her daughter is treating her children like this so it's like a cycle that they often discuss you see a lot of Anger from Andre Day within this film like I said she's uh very Snappy at people she doesn't want Glen cloes her mother to help out at all or give any advice on how to parent her children the dialogue is very heavy and hard to listen to at times with all of the arguments between our characters but one of the biggest reason supposedly that everybody's acting this way is that there is this portal to hell that they introduce occasionally throughout this film or you see like a creaking of a door or flies around the house very cliche moments when you come to supposedly a haunted house but the whole idea of it all with this portal to Hell Comes way way too late in the film like you are so connected to the characters and their story lines that you're not even thinking about that synopsis for this film and having a hard time seeing how it's going to be integrated into the movie and come towards the end you're so focused on this toxic relationship between the mother and her children and the grandmother and CPS involved played by Mo'Nique and just all of the moments with the community it's so focused on all of that that it seemed like it just could be this drama about the family and not even having that portal to hell but it is based on a true story and so that comes way too late in the film and with Lee Daniels as being his first Venture into a horror film it doesn't feel terrifying at all all of it feels very cliche generic when it comes to the end have moments where the mother is tested and she realizes things about herself how she's treated her children but that like is the end of the movie and it doesn't have any buildup on all of that you're supposed to have these terrifying moments but what really is terrifying about all of that is that relationship with this family and how toxic it is and how abusive it is and and what the young kids go through but there is development for this family they realize important things about themselves and their family and they try to move past all of that like I said Andre day gives a really strong performance as this mother she uh is very angry for most of this film she's able to snap at somebody very quickly you see a lot of that hostile moments coming from her and it's very strong within here Glen cloes I I I'm not sure I'm not too sure on her performance uh she is somebody that loves to like hook up with anybody in the community she tries to give advice to her daughter and be able to be there for her grandchildren it's a little bit campy at times but I really did like her with in this film very strong performance from Monique she plays somebody that is check in on the mother and the children and seeing what's going on at the house she has a few lines that she expresses what her job means to her and being able to help families in need and help children and she is a highlight of this film she's not a major character in this movie but her performance stands out as one of the best we also have Caleb mlin from stranger things in here being the oldest child with in this movie he's able to realize things about his mother and what she goes through and how he can try to better himself and protect his siblings so he also gives a very strong performance honestly the performances are really good in here it just becomes way too late with that portal to hell at the end it's not terrifying it feels very generic there's no camera tricks that make it stand out there's nothing groundbreaking about the end of this movie so you have you're like this whole focus on this family and their relationship and the drama within all of that and then you quickly transition at the end to this horror film and trying to understand how this house has affected everybody and the young kids as well but it comes just way too late in the film and doesn't really have any effect on the movie or any depth added to it all it just becomes like a waste at the end everything else I think is pretty good in terms of the performances but it just feels really odd for Lee Daniels to have like a horror film when you see that he's more more in tuned with the drama and the the personal moments from our characters and the family relationship and not so strong when it comes to the horror aspect of the film at times I thought the performances were strong the storyline worked but on the other hand the pacing was off and you didn't have any terrifying moments at the end it just did not work so before I give you my score for the deliverence make sure to check out my channel here do
