[Music] [Music] hello my name is Danny Tilman and I am president of the board of education for the San Marino City Unified School District hello to the parents students and all the District employees I'm talking to you pertaining to the fires that are surrounding us at this time on Monday uh I toured the district U from uh east to west to get an assessment of the air quality and got some expert numbers from our safety uh at that point it was determined that we would open schools on Monday um uh the thought being that uh we would have students indoors in the air conditioning providing the best environment uh possible we knew that the smell of smoke was still in the air and Bonnie old didn't open because it was in the evacuation area we have decided now to also close torronto because the spell of the smoke was so strong so today's air was better than yesterday's and to tomorrow's air is projected to be better than today's therefore we are planning on opening the schools tomorrow also remember we understand there are unique circumstances so if there are students that you know uh because of health reasons should not come to school because even getting to the school through the air is not a good thing for them we understand they'll be kept home and the same thing for our employees we realize there are some employees because of health issues or because they have to stay home with a child may have to call in sick the district would do everything to mitigate those circumstances today we had over 40,000 students attend school today and and that was because we had the teachers and classified employees that showed up to make sure they were going to allow our Stu students to get educated in the best environment possible I went to Roosevelt airview in sanino high school was born and raised in sanino and still live in sanino have been here my entire life so I understand the environment very well I grew up in a house on 1212 West 17th Street where we didn't have air conditioning we had a swamp cooler and I remember the fires in 1969 and other years the worst thing to have was a swamp cooler because it brings in the smoke from the outside so a lot of our students still live in those circumstances and the best place for them to be at this time is at school sites so I can't thank the employees enough to for providing that opportunity for our students it's I know was causing a lot of pain and concern for a lot of our parents students and staff and I hear you uh we're going to continue to monitor the situation to to make the right decisions for all that doesn't mean that all people are going to be happy trust me my phone is blowing up I'm getting text messages but I'm taking in all the information before we make the final decisions so as of today um September the 9th tomorrow September the 10th we will have school and based on the circumstances tomorrow that will dictate what we do in the future but in the end I just want to thank everybody for your patience and let's continue to work together to do what's best for our students thank you very much [Music]
