And we begin tonight with our ongoing coverage of decision 2024. Thanks for joining us. I'm Mark Curtis. I'm Jonathan mccaul. In tonight for Karibe Arizona State University could be in the running to host a presidential debate. Should there be another one? A SU would partner with CBS News to stage the debate between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump. 12 news, political journalist Bram Resnick taking us back 20 years to the first time as you hosted a debate in Tempe, Bram and Jonathan, there is no guarantee a SU will get a debate but the university says it is ready to be a host. Former Tempe mayor, Neil Giuliano pushed for that first debate in 2004 for 12 years. Right off the top. I'd like to single out one person. Neil Giuliano got the idea almost 50 years ago as an Arizona State University freshman, Barry Goldwater and Ted Kennedy both spoke on the A SU campus on the same day and I got to shake both of their hands and it just kind of inspired me. In 1992 the future Tampa mayor began his quest to host a presidential debate kind of like bidding for an Olympics. And I thought, you know, Arizona State University in Tempe should host one of these. So I started pitching it. And in October 2004, Republican President George W Bush and Democratic Senator John Kerry took the stage for their debate at Gamage Auditorium. 12 years ago, former mayor Neil Giuliano first contacted the commission about the idea of bringing a debate to this city and here we are. Giuliano was co-director of the debate. They did them on university campuses to get students involved and there were courses that were taught and they were just community outreach. That's not where we are. That's what appealed to Giuliano this cycle. That's what, that's what you're missing. You're not getting any of that. The presidential nominees today would show up for a made for TV. Production on the upside. Um Everyone saves the expense and the work. And Arizona State University spokesman provided this statement. If there is a debate that CBS sponsors in the spirit of the national electoral process. A su would be privileged to help the university has site options. We would be happy to provide democratic presidential nominee nominee Kamala Harris says she's ready to go for a second debate.
