in 1970 GE began work on an order of locomotives for the New Jersey Department of Transportation operating over Eerie lacana commuter lines these engines called u34 CS are externally identical to u33 C's the locomotives are capable of producing 3600 horsepower but an alternator installed in the space reserve for a steam generator consumes up to 200 horsepower the alternator's purpose is to provide Hotel power for the Train's passenger cars the summer of 1994 saw the units phased out of service the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey sponsored a fan trip utilizing the big six-axle uots paying homage to their 24 years of continuous service [Music] [Music] [Laughter] the special train ran pull pull style with a u34 CH on on both ends of the SAR train after making a stop at Mountain Lakes the train is seen passing through Denville on its way out to netcon [Music] [Applause] the train passed a string of stored E60 electrics these GE built locomotives were new in 1974 to 1975 and were originally built for Amtrak [Music] while waiting for the Excursion to return to Denville a work train arrived with another u34 CH on it a string of ballast Hoppers is shoved out of the way so the crew can couple onto another cut of cars in the sighting in the meantime the special arrives back at Denville the train slows to a stop so that those on board can get a look at the u34 on the work TR that unusual car in the consist belongs to the urhs it's former New York central tavern Lounge car number 5450 and was recently overhauled by the society New Jersey Transit was extremely Cooperative with the sponsoring organization and even repainted both of the locomotives used on the trip the 4172 will be held for preservation at the proposed New Jersey Transportation Museum the rest of the fleet was sold to Mexico soon underway the Excursion heads back toward Hoboken on the Morris and Essex line the work train pumps air into the string of Bast cars and will soon be underway later at hokus the special heads out the mainline towards Suffern [Music] turn on the return trip the train gets underway at radburn after making a photo stop the UB boats really smoke it up as they accelerate out of the station [Music] [Music] oh [Music] the special Excursion concludes with a trip out and back on the pasac Valley Line and the train is seen passing through Emerson on the way out on the return trip we set up for a superb runby just south of the station at idell [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the era of the uots has come to a close on New Jersey Transit but the units definitely went out in style a special note of Thanks goes to the efforts of the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey and to New Jersey Transit the organization succeeded in honoring these classic diesels in a grand fashion
