Zoe C. Interviews Eli Roth, writer / director, about Borderlands

Introduction [Music] hi everyone I'm s reporting for kids first and today I have the pleasure of interviewing director Eli rot for his new film Borderlands from the video game of the same name his previous critics as an actor include in glorious bastards and as a director The House of the pocket at swalls and Thanksgiving among many others hi welcome to Miami it's such a Interview pleasure to meet you gracias nice to meet you of course this film is such a energetic adaptation of the video game I had such a fun time watching it I felt like I was playing the game while watching the movie amazing yes and so was it hard to bring the essence of the video game onto the big screen well every movie is challenging but you know I was I really great support from Randy Pitchford the Creator and I wanted it to look and feel like the game and we had this amazing art Department in Budapest they just on Dune so we could really really build this sets build the guns our our prop Department our costume Department um they were amazing so so we could really really bring it to life and I love that the game is totally absurd and ridiculous it's very much my sense of humor it feels like a lunatic created it so I wanted to make a movie like Fifth Element or you know when you watch Escape From New York the films I grew up on where you're like did a crazy person direct this and that sense of just silliness and Madness but also something that could bring younger audiences into the game you know if you have kids that are 9 10 11 year old they're going to go crazy absolutely and was it hard to create this world that I guess you want to make different for audiences like that we haven't seen before but also for the video game relatable for like the fans yeah definitely I think a lot of movies that are set in a future they make it very kind of dark and dystopian and that but I didn't want to do that for this story I wanted to really be colorful and Poppy like an acid trip movie um and so everywhere cuz these people are trying to make the best of the garbage in their world so it's just it was really really fun to put in pops of neon and color and really really make it I wanted the film to be visually beautiful and spectacular and every time you went to a new location you went wow what is this place and that's the fun of a movie like this is you just get transported into another world yeah I think that Jos of that like the color with also like just the essence of the world is so interesting to watch and you have a great cast and from so many different backgrounds how was it directing um you know this amazing Ensemble that you have you know it's fun you you you know I know them separately but you never know how it's going to work as you put them all together and they loved each other I had a feeling they would love each other like Kate and Jamie didn't know each other and then they met and they were you know instantly like sisters Ariana greenblat was 13 years old this kid was the funniest young actor I'd ever met and so we cast her and she's like the heart and soul of the movie so anchored around and and Kevin Hart brought his kids they became best friends so it it was just like this functional dysfunctional family everyone was so fun Edgar Ramirez was incredible Florian montino it was we were all together because it was the pandemic when we shot it so we couldn't do anything else so everyone just on set that became the reality of our world and then when you see them all fighting together it just they really really work as a group absolutely and I think this film also has so many amazing messages that can resonate with the audience so how important was it for you to deliver like a message with such a fun film as well well thank you I think that with a movie like this it's great I the first message is turn off your brain grab a bucket of popcorn and uh have fun like I want everyone to just go to have a great time and laugh but it I think there's a lot of things in there about finding your family and you know finding out who you are and and sort of the responsibility of like you know people that push away love and then finally accept love because they don't want to be vulnerable so I think the best science fiction in genre movies always sneak in those messages there and it is really a film about finding your family and embracing who you are absolutely I love the film I enjoyed it so much thank you so much thank you zo I really appreciate it of course thank you Outro all so much for watching make sure to check out Borderlands and theaters August 9th and if you enjoyed this interview as much as I did make sure to give it a big thumbs up and please check out some of our other kids RIS reviewers and reporters on this channel see you in the next one [Music]
