came to call sinners Christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us Lord have mercy May almighty God have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray oh God who filled the priest and Martyr St maximilan Colby with a burning love for the immaculate Virgin Mary and with Zeal for souls and love of neighbor graciously Grant through his intercession that striving For Your Glory by eagerly serving others we may be conformed even until death to your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit God forever and ever amen a reading from the first letter of John beloved we know that we have passed from Death to life because we love our brothers whoever does not love remains in death whoever hates his brother is a murderer and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him the way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers if someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion how can the love of God remain in him children let us love not in word or speech but in deed and Truth the word of the Lord precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faith ful ones I believed even when I said I am greatly Afflicted I said in my alarm no man is Dependable precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones how shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me the cup of Salvation I will take up and I will call upon the name of the Lord precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones oh Lord I am your servant you have loosed my bonds to you will I offer sacrifice of Thanksgiving and I will call upon the name of the Lord precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones hallelujah hallelujah hallelu hallelujah hallelujah hallelu if you hate your life in this world you will preserve it to life eternal hallelujah hallelujah [Music] hallelu the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to John Jesus said to his disciples this is my commandment love one another as I have loved you no one has greater love than this to lay down one's life for one's friends you are my friends if you do what I command you I no longer call you slaves because a slave does not know what his master is doing I have called you friends because I have told you everything I have heard from my father it was not you who chose me but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain so that whatever you ask the father in my name he may give you the gospel of the Lord prise to you Jesus Christ love the Evangelist I believe Paul tells us no it's John I believe tells us God is love that that's what he is he can be nothing but he is all-encompassing love and he and he's telling us Jesus tells us like at The Sermon on the Mount for example he says about the two great Commandments he says love your neighbor as yourself as well as loving God he says love your neighbor as yourself now in this in today's reading which is taken from the high Priestly prayer that Jesus prayed in the Holy Gospel according to John he's talking to his disciples giving them his final instructions and what he does here is he raises the bar on love so this is my commandment love one another as I love you so he's defining what is that love that we offer to our neighbor it is the love that God offers to us he's asking us to pay forward that love that we receive from God to others and if we look around we we should be able to see no one undeserving of that love everyone we see everyone is deserving of that love from us and Jesus go goes on to elevate us to his friends or his brothers and sisters because we love others as God loves us and then he says something rather interesting near the end of the reading that's really important for us to understand because we often wonder with this love that God has given us how how do I use this love to help spread the word what is my calling and the calling is not something we come up with ourselves it is something our Lord gives us he says I it was not you who chose me but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain very important that we understand that our Lord calls us to love as he loves us and he calls us to do the will of his father father in he of Our Father in heaven to follow the calling the path that our lord has laid out for us the path that will guarantee us the most happiness in our life and the path that will guarantee us a home in heaven with the Lord living as the Lord being Jesus to Those whom we encounter always always greeting people with a smile especially those who don't want to smile back we always need to be we need to be spreading our love to others and and there's no exceptions to this I I I say this so many times in so many homilies and it's so important for us to understand it but there are no exceptions to our mandate to love as God has loved us and what does that mean for us well what it means is the forces in the world that seem to be enemies of us we should be praying for because we should love them we love our enemies and we love our friends the Lord said love your enemies do good to those who persecute you now he's defining it as he would we should do and finally Jesus explains the nature and the limit of that love so no one has greater love than this to lay down one's life for one's friends and shortly after this little sermon Jesus did just that he demonstrated the love that he's telling us about because we are to lay down our lives for our friends we are called to do that because we are called to be like Christ praise be Jesus Christ calling on our Father in heaven we offer up our prayers and petitions to a father whom we know hears and answers all of our prayers for the whole church that the members of each household in her ranks may choose with all their hearts to serve the Lord in gratitude for all his gifts we pray to the Lord Lord he and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all
