Marcelo. Fire officials say this fire broke out around noon today. But as you can see tonight, there's still a lot of smoke rising into the air. Now, they say at this point, they're waiting for the fire just to really burn itself out. That could take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours here. You can see flames emerging from the SDG and E storage container filled with racks of lithium batteries. The hazmat was determined that the best strategy was going to be to not put water on the actual fire. It would create a bigger hazard than just letting it burn. Fire crews contained the blaze to one container and sprayed water on the surrounding ones to prevent the fire from spreading. I mean, I work for an electric company so we do hear these stories, Mike lives in Escondido and works near the facility. You always hear about the Teslas how suns have to be submerged into water to make sure that they die off. So I understand like I said, you know, you cannot just throw water at it. You have to make sure that it dies. And then after that, I've heard like stories about how it would just come up. You know, again, you know, alive fire officials say lithium battery fires very difficult to put out and cause a lot of pollution. Those cells create so much heat when they light off on fire, they end up just light, lighting the neighboring cells on fire. So that's why they call it a runaway. They put off a lot of heat and they put off a lot of hazardous fumes. So you don't want to get anywhere near them. This past May we reported when a fire broke out at an energy storage facility near Oay Mesa, it took property managers and contractors more than 11 days to stabilize the batteries. And as far as evacuations go a commercial area around the facility that's under an evacuation order. But officials say there are not any homes in that area, there's also a shelter in place just to an area east of the facility and just over the past hour or so, we've learned there's also going to be schools canceled for tomorrow. This includes Carolyn Gilbert Education Center, as well as Del Dios Academy of Arts and Sciences Rock Springs Elementary School and limitless learning. They will be virtual but there will not be any on campus classes reporting live in Escondido, Jasmine Ramirez CBS eight
