[Music] hi I'm taba The saurin Welcome to our choose or lose election Eve special for the past 10 months MTV News has been covering the presidential election we've tried to energize young people about politics and get them to vote because in 1988 less than 35% of 18 to 24 year olds made it to the polls we want our viewers to choose a candidate or lose out on a voice in the direction their country is going since February MTV News has asked politicians to speak directly to young people something generally missing in mainstream media Outlets our mission this year was to cover the issues that young voters care about as a result young people have registered to vote in record numbers with MTV's help the music industry voter registration Group Rock the vote has signed up 750,000 young voters we're hoping all of them will make the effort to cast their vote this coming Tuesday our viewers said that issues are what they wanted the candidates and the media to concentrate on during this election throughout the year we talked to young people to find out what was on their minds here's a look back at what they told us the major issues were for them in January June and October of this year what issue matters to you most in this upcoming election what one issue uh I think the economy is very very important um as well as foreign policy the world's in a lot of turmoil right now healthare AIDS abortion um what else Child Care education the environment the economy the economy the economy always plays a big role in any election pretty soon my unemployment benefits are going to run out they're not buying as much they're buying in Necessities people are really hurting around here and um I've noticed in tips that they're lower there are plenty of guys with with phds out there flipping burgers at McDonald's here I have a degree and I can't even find a job I'm going for jobs overqualified for there are so many people who are graduating now who can't even use the degrees that they paid for they still have to pay back all the loans that they were able to get when I signed the papers for the loan I wasn't worrying about paying them back at all I thought once I graduate I'll have a job it'll be no problem making payments there were three different loans and some come from the government some come from the bank and about the total amount that I owe is about $10,000 C environmentalism is something that is mandatory I'm outraged with clear cutting I'm outraged with the ozone problem blindness skin cancer crop failure all things that are direct results of ozone depletion I worry about the ozone their wins get shorter and shorter and I remember when I was young there used to be snow piled up to like the windows of our car and it never happens anymore garbage is a big problem and that needs to be addressed like LA or San Francisco and they go and you can just see the thick brown smog I up here we don't see that I think when we know that it's happening for right now everyone's just concerned more or less with themselves it's the same old line the same rhetoric nothing's changed nothing's new how voter feel about those issues will determine which party or candidate they align themselves with the two major parties the Democrats and the Republicans are defined by their platforms here's an outline of each platform as adopted at this Summer's conventions to help you make up your mind about whom to vote [Music] for the Republican platform is decidedly anti-abortion calling for a constitutional amendment banning all abortions with no exceptions this proposal goes farther than even the bushes would like and has alarmed many pro-choice Republicans the president has made it quite clear what his position on this issue
