[Music] former Canadian fashion Mogul Peter nyard has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of four counts of sexual assault and attacks on women in his Toronto office building during a 6-week trial the Ontario Superior Court heard testimony from five complainants who said during a period between the late 1980s to around 2005 niggard had attacked them in a private bedroom suite on the top floor of the building a Toronto jury found nyard guilty last November the 83-year-old was acquitted of a fifth count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement Justice Robert Goldstein said Monday that nyard quote used his wealth and his power to commit the assaults Crown prosecutor Neville golwala and Justice Goldstein sentenced Mr nyard accordingly and found him to have committed these sexual assaults uh in a way that makes him as we have been saying uh recognizes the description of him as a sexual predator that is the bottom line that is the story Canadian police arrested nyard in late 2020 at the request of the United States where he was accused of using his businesses to lure women and girls to sexually gratify himself and his associates Toronto police laid their own charges about a year later nyard also faces charges in Manitoba and Quebec and is fighting extradition to the US where he faces federal charges in New York for nine offenses Survivor Jennifer Hoff men called for charges in Canada and the US we all need to be on the same team and we need to eliminate Predators like this from continuing to hurt women and and girls and human beings period niggard became one of the wealthiest people in Canada while running his namesake clothing company the 11-year sentence is reduced to take into account time he has already spent Behind Bars niggard has about 6.7 years left to serve and will be eligible for full parole after onethird of that it was a very validating judgment from Justice Goldstein validating vindicating um the giving voice to the to the suffering of these women these are the these are the v's that need to come forward and be be the norm for victims rather than voiceless and violated and vulnerable which is what they have been forced to be for so so long we know our system our justice system is a very broken system so while we can celebrate some a partial win today this is a historic a historic ruling um it should set precedent yet there is so much work to be done he's not coming out of jail he's still got if he's hopefully going to Federal he still has to go to Montreal you know and the thing is is that he's been so cushioned in Winnipeg he had extra beding extra everything he's never been in general population and with everything inside of me I'm hoping that he will finally get to general population and then I can feel like there's Justice cuz right now there's been none because he's been so spoiled and so pampered I'm sorry that is absolutely our government should be ashamed of themselves on how spoiled he's been niggard will never get out of prison he is not going to get out of prison here in Canada he will likely never make it through extradition to the United States but we know today that he has been sentenced he is 83 years old he will likely be 89 when his sentences here is finished but there are many more sentences to come and we are not giving up we are standing together we're going to continue to fight we need to make changes here in Canada we need to continue to make changes in the United States we all need to be on the same team and we need to eliminate Predators like this from continuing to hurt women and and girls and human beings period uh he understands the judges reasons and he understands the basis for the judges reasons uh while he certainly doesn't agree with everything that uh justice Goldstein says he respects the judge's right to make the findings that he did and uh I won't say he accepts the sentence because he most certainly will be appealing it there's a lot of moving pieces to all of the different prosecutions for Mr nyard uh he has uh an appeal to file in the in the Ontario Court of Appeal he's got ongoing uh first instance cases in the Manitoba Provincial Court as well as in Montreal as I understand it although I don't act for him on that matter and uh yeah so he's just going to continue to uh defend himself where he can appeal where he can and continue to maintain his innocence in all of these matters the complainants in this case came forward and stood up in front of a jury and explained what happened to them many of them decades and decades ago and the jury accepted what they had to say he was found to have done what they had alleged and Justice Goldstein sentenced Mr nyard accordingly and found him to have committed these sexual assaults uh in a way that makes him as we have been saying uh recognizes the description of him as a sexual predator that is the bottom line that is the story
