guys where I wanted to start today um was the Andy cotal Nikki experience as I like to call it now last year uh there was an emphasis by James Franklin there was an emphasis by uh the coaching staff and uh the the end of especially kind of towards the end of the Mike uch tenure uh where things maybe got a little stale maybe got a little repetitive maybe got a little predictable if you will um and and Penn State and James Franklin brings in Andy codoni to get the quote explosive plays going and that's what Andy koton Nikki was known for at at Kansas he brought a Kansas team that was 110th in yard in uh yards per game uh three years ago to back-to-back top 10 finishes in the the last two seasons as The Jayhawks offensive coordinator so guys we'll start with the the the basics the overarching stuff um in this first game everything seemed to go well maybe the eye test will tell you uh it was one game maybe you're excited about it but with everything that we kind of were asking for from and Andy kikki and Drew Aller the receiving core the great running back tandem uh what did you guys see out of this offensive group uh did you get the explosive plays you were looking for were you excited about what you saw in Morgantown last weekend yeah I mean I'll start I mean from the end of last season the entire summer you know I'm sure Jason we all were around the the football team a little bit and there was just such an excitement around you know not only you know Coach K which we like to call him but even you know Tom Allen and Justin running the Special Teams having three new coordinators we we all wanted this to be a new little team and they check for me checked all the boxes I mean the one thing I wanted to see was the ball going down the field a little bit more you know we got a great quarterback and Drew and at times last year you know we saw a lot of checkdowns we saw a lot of bubble screens and there wer there weren't those explosive plays that we all wanted to see and we saw that early on in this game you know they they surpassed my expectations and I temper them because West Virginia game last year if you look back at that game we had some explosive plays in that game and then it kind of tailed off throughout the season yeah there's a lot to be excited about I I mean I know we'll talk more about it throughout throughout today but I couldn't have been more excited from what I saw in game one from our niy lines I think when I look at this game and and kind of what coach Andy did I mean there's a lot to like um just from a standpoint of awareness level of with the flow of the game I mean you could see the maturity of the coordinator in that game in the very first quarter Drew kind of missed on a on a couple of kind of easy throws and then he said all right look I'm gonna give him a couple of free throws let me get this guy going boom we saw a couple free throws couple ding dinking dunk dunks to hitches for some Yak yardage and then boom he hit Harrison Wallace and over the scene 50 yard touchdown so you know things of that nature I felt like those kinds of element El were really missing in last year's offense and then when I look at the offense as a whole you know throughout this game you saw multiple Personnel packages you saw all kinds of formations you saw shifts a lot of pre- snap motion you saw wide receivers out Bunch trips super wide you saw condense set two by twos you saw the lion position come back that we haven't seen since kind of that Tomy Stevens era we have both Pula in there at at quarterback or in there at receiver doing a motion getting the ball you know so he was building a lot of plays off each other and kind of made the offense very unpredict unpredictable to me which I felt was a huge element that was missing last year yes so now I was GNA what Jason said with specifically about Bo you know when he came in the game last year we knew what it was we knew what was coming and when he he dropped back and through and threw that touchdown to Tyler Warren we're like okay I see what we got it's some you know some variety in this offense and we've all been yearning for that you guys you know the variety the the the schematics that you guys bring up um I I think the one thing that that was very evident to me right away was you know and and you talked about it Jason right off the shoot with the uh the yak yards and kind of building that that momentum right off you know right right middle of the second quarter uh guys seem to be schemed open yeah more than I have seen in a long time between the between the Wallace big play now he had a lot of you know a lot of yak yards after the play catch and run made a nice play Aller hit him in stride uh really happy with the fact that he he let you know let go of that ball before Wallace made his break just a good throw good read good good pitch and catch uh but between that play um the the the KRON Allen passing touchdown uh where he was uh you know kind of left untouched and then you know made a bunch of guys miss and made a really nice play at the goal line uh to score uh but to me it just felt like there was so much more open space in this offense you know in the at least in the first game and like you said Adam we'll take it for one game we'll take it for what it's worth but for a team that preaches um you know one game at a time right this is West Virginia West Virginia West Virginia um I I think that that was such a a critical step in the right direction yeah I think where you saw the biggest growth in Drew Allen where it was just super apparent was the end of that first half I mean last year that was not happening last year that drive ends with us taking a knee which trying to play it safe let's just get to the next half let's make our adjustments and let's just win by game plan instead of you know like I really felt like Drew hung his nuts on that drive straight up that ball to Omari Evans like he just let that thing go and said you know what I'm gonna give my guy a chance we didn't see a whole lot of that last year and that's kind of what their fan base was begging for all year like man just give these guys a chance where the trust you know things of that nature and then you saw it and then you see the fade ball to Harrison Wallace to end the first half I mean that just that was awesome to see and I think in general I mean you see Drew Aller he was playing decisively you know things weren't there okay I'm gonna find a way out of this pocket I'm gonna run you know he wasn't thinking too much man he was just out there playing freaking stiff arm the linebacker to the ground then coming back and talking a little smack you know like we didn't see that out of Drew so that energy that edge like man that's what we've been waiting for out of Drew so I think that's one of the most exciting kind of developments developments out of our offense and out of that game really is you know Drew's out there playing with an edge mate playing with a trip he's got something to prove that's big time I I love that man it was so funny because that last Drive of the first half I was getting up to get my halftime snacks I the ball I said hold on let me sit back down for a second because they look like they're about to try to do something here until your point he threw that pass to Omar and gave him a shot and then that pass that he threw to Trey to end the half that was I mean you like you say you wouldn't see that last year and the thing I really liked about Drew was if it wasn't there he he put the he he he used his feet a little bit you know he he knows he he knows he plays within his body he knows he's not going to blaze you know down the sideline but Pi up some nice first downs when the play broke down and again he didn't Panic that we probably didn't see that last year and he just looked like a confident poised quarterback uh in game one and that in the new system that's that's great to see
