the NC State students have returned to their seats and you talk about some early winners and losers on the night there's some mural athleticism there even Dave D was out to greet them as they returned with t-shirts and more so we'll kick it at 7:32 here on acc network with number 24 NC State and Western Carolina now back to the ACC road trip NC State Road Trip Man rileigh North Carolina beautiful day for practice it's the first day of August but it's day two and for the pack on the grass and let me tell you something man NC State Nation is fired up and rightfully so look at the transfers here Grayson Mall we're going to talk to him momentarily transfers from Coastal Carolina Noah Rogers doing his thing Jordan Waters we've seen him enough at Duke he is going to be a problem for the rest of the league and Justin Jolie man a tight end is going to be really good too listen NC State's got weapons they're going to be dangerous and with all that said man they cannot wait to show it off all right Grayson McCall joined us hey Grayson last week it was Charlotte suit and TI now you you really have your business suit on boy you picked a nice cool morning to get to work yeah man it's been hot out here but uh always good to get back on the grass the guys were excited fire up to to be back out here Grayson something that was so evident yesterday when I was able to come by see practice you've got a receiver room I mean you you've got some real guys out there's the some additions that you've made some guys that are coming back tell me a little bit about that room and maybe who has elevated this offseason yeah a bunch of dudes I mean obviously the guys you saw from last year deari Collins and KC conception and then you bring guys like Noah Rogers and then Wesley Grimes and then you got young guys um like Keenan Jackson and Terrell Anderson so a bunch of dudes around me man they work hard really bought in this spring to getting on the same page with route Concepts and timing and things like that so uh we're in a good spot man got you know 20 practices out here um but it's about time to go so a lot of dudes around me make my job a lot easier but love working with those guys yeah it's kind of awesome too because I you didn't know all those guys were going to be here when you committed I would assume you knew what you had but what was it about NC State that you said hey I need to go to this spot yeah I think just what you know they've been able to do over the years you know coach Doran has a very strong culture here and someone he's built for a long time um a team that's been you know right on the edge of winning 10 games and really winning the league so um something I wanted to be a part of something that I was extremely intrigued in whenever I was able to come on my visit and um the people are great here it's a family identity and and everybody's Trea me like that and uh it's been awesome man really really excited with the decision I made and just so happy to be here that's how did how did they show that right you know people talk all the time hey we got great culture and different things and that's a great thing but how do you see that in a day or two right yeah I think it you know it was immediately when whenever I put my name in the transfer portal they showed a lot of interest they showed me that they wanted me and uh really cared about me throughout the process and really you know kind of gave me time to explore other schools and and do the whole thing so and then whenever I was able to come on campus just the way they treated me um you know I I I was here to to learn football learn the guys I didn't want to you know necessarily do the photo shoot and see camps and everything like that I wanted to sit down with the guys and learn ball and and they respected that yeah respected and they were awesome and the coaches here they really care and a lot of really good coaches in this building so you know it was kind of a no-brainer for me when I got here that's awesome Grace it's only the second practice but what about the leadership the voice on the offensive side do you take a sense that hey I'm the guy let's go yeah no doubt I think you know it kind of comes with the position it's something that uh that I've kind of always embraced um and then you you bring a guy like Zeke Carell and a guy that's you know a four-year starter um in Notre Dame that's played a lot of football played a lot of big football games and um he's really turned things around having him out here um this spring has been awesome he really you know leads the charge up front and he's done a phenomenal job so um and then obviously Jordan Waters in the backfield it's like having another quarterback back there with me so um th those guys really you know kind of take the weight off my shoulders but um you know I I try to be the leader the best I can I tell you what we're going to let you get back to work I know you like to be chilling out with us but you got to get back to work yep no doubt thank you guys for having me uh go pack a lot of work to to put in but we're excited to be out here and can't wait to get this thing going you got What's happen year 24 a year two um I would say that I'm trying to go for a th000 like receiving yards um I'm going to be doing some punt returns so I can I can get in some more yards there um trying to go for overall like around 15,500 1700 yeah 10 10 to like 12 touchdowns come on we got it laid out we got the blueprint laid out I mean it's it's right there for the taking uh we were so impressed with your year last year brother the the way that you did it the amount of pressure expectation at the end of the year everybody knew 10 was getting the ball and they couldn't stop it what what was that like for you as a true freshman having all that kind of placed on you honestly it was it was honestly crazy you feel me but but I mean I have my teammates that I can lean on I have my I have my coaches that I can come to talk to every day so just so just so just leaning on the guys around me just like just like made it better for me yeah and I think my you know I'm a former linebacker and my favorite part about watching you was how guys couldn't take you down right you weren't running out of bounds you were lowering your shoulder into guys you were making guys miss you were consistently fighting for that extra yard just have you always had that mentality was that instilled in you here at NC State a dog a dog but um I would say that I would say that um my uh I feel like I feel like my my uh dad he um he uh drew that into me while I was younger so um so so I feel like I just always had that dog in me since I was young and then I just brought it to the coso you seen any more dogs come in this wide receiver and tight end room and running back room in the past year tell me about these guys ooh hey hey let's go we got we got Noah from from Ohio State dog we got Wesley from Wake Forest we got my high school team may Hollywood in here I know yeah how crazy is that man it's going to be man we got Grayson in here we got Justin Jolly like this this offense this year is about to be crazy yeah well I know this much the shades I know that wasn't intentional because I know folks will be like oh man's going Hol this could be a new marketing campaign you know that yes sir hey holl throws it up for grabs incomplete ball of the tur Dave Doran 77 wins in NC State he ties the legend Earl Edwards for most in school history I love these guys and I'm proud of them I wish more people had faith in him I sure as H do and tell Steve Smith in the studio this ain't a basketball school he can kiss [Applause] my one of the all-time great lines and you know did they show the Clemson just because of me and you there was that 100% person deal there I thought that never good when the last play says up for grabs never good especially when it's not in the end zone I tell you what is going to be good is this offense right I me again we were going to touch base on the number of guys coming up but nevertheless I think NC State offensively in 24 much better than what you saw last year and this was a team that won a bunch of games and the the biggest reason for that is they just have weapons and I think you have a very Dynamic quarterback that's coming in in Grayson McCall so to me you know Distributing the ball is going to be at all-time high yes we know what 10 is going to do the exceptional explosive ability that KC concepion has and was really forced into you know action of being the guy last year I mean he was it you know we we've talked to multiple coaches and and just saying hey at the bye we just flooded the the the game plan with 10 how can we get him the ball this year that's not going to be the case they've got a ton of guys Noah Rogers is going to be a superstar a guy that went and started his career at Ohio State now he's back Wesley Grimes yesterday and practice guys Shifty as all get out I can't wait to see them side by side uh and then the the big tight end which you like a lot yeah Justin Jolie it from Yukon I really like him and I love I love his physicality I love his speed combination it's just he's a very prototypical like you move tight end in the pros but think about this right Casey concepion moved almost every play last year right they always trying to hide him and move him now they can use Jolie as some of that move Guy where you get Casey you can hide him you can move him in motion you can do a bunch of different things and The X Factor of all of them is Robert and I right I mean when you talk about like like mad scientist offensive coordinators look at what he did with Brandon Armstrong who I I think Grayson McCall has better physical talents than Brandon Armstrong look what he did with Garrett shider right at Syracuse he took a guy that you know was a former wide receiver turned him into a really good quarterback and so what he's going to be able to do with all of these pieces like to me that's the most exciting and you're never going to have the same game plan week in week out and on top of hey we should have a run game like that's been something that has been the Achilles heel of this team taking that next step in my opinion because they haven't been able to do it and they've had first round draft picks at offensive line they've had great running backs that are in the UFL NFL that just they haven't been able to take that next step Jordan Waters does that having a potential first round draft pick uh in Anthony Belton does that but the biggest difference as what you just said there in coach Robert and I life football offense is about mismatches and they have all the pieces to do that yeah that's why there's so much enthusiasm about this team and what they can possibly pull off for the upcoming season it is going to be great see what the schedule is with notable games you got a couple big ones early Tennessee and shot the road trip down to Death Valley we're going to know a lot about NC State early in the season there's no question about that no question at all I mean you're talking about week three week four we're going to know exactly who this team is yep no question is right uh by the way speaking of road trips we're having a good time here in Raleigh North Carolina but guess what we got a bunch more coming up we're heading back out to the Left Coast Cal tomorrow and then it just keeps on rocking and rolling for the next couple weeks again it's August boys and girls check the upon us how lucky are we in the ACC we don't have to wait till Saturday because Carter Finley Stadium is ready to rock tonight as NC State host Western Carolina Dave Dorn's wolf pack is ready to go with pretty high expectations into the 2024 season we're already in midseason form here with the ACC Wolfpack who is in the house here and you're probably wondering why we're inside we'll get to that in a second EJ Manuel form a Florida State quarterback first round draft pick Clemson Captain offensive lineman Eric mlan former Virginia Tech well current Hall of Famer Eddie Royal nine-year NFL vet I'm Taylor tab bomb and we are ready for a fun season with you now the reason we're inside is cuz our credentials didn't cash we got kicked off the field access yeah they wouldn't let us in the field so uh we had to be in the building no unfortunately we are in a rain delay right now we are set to kick here we were at 7:00 has been moved to 7:32 so we will be with you until then the rest of the way as we get ready just some lightning in the area no real rain what are you counting down till kick off like we got a long show don't we we got a long show but that that begs the question for you guys who all played this game and you know the feeling of week one after you've hit your teammates for several weeks in Fall Camp you're ready to go out there and hit somebody else and now they hit you with a weather delay what's going on right now downstairs in the NC State locker room well it it it throws off the routine because we're creatures of habit former players because you get used to the warmup you get used to then I'mma do this then I'm going to eat that I'm going to review my plays for a little bit longer so it makes you a little bit more nervous you're trying to stay loose uh you want to review your plays you're probably overpreparing now mentally uh so for those guys man they're just anxious to get out there uh and so to get going I I kind of feel bad for him at least and it's game one right better uh this week than next week though you know when you look opponent and things like that nature and this is where we lean on our coach man we got to have him to you know really tell us the the game plan there but you've got to find a way to to keep everybody loose to keep everybody kind of going it's when you rely on your big strength coaches let's go back to it let's do everything over again it's a little condensed now but you got to get ready to go well usually this happens in training camp at some point now I played before we had a indoor facility at Florida state so they had that luxury to be able to go inside but again if it happened in training camp you know your body is already sweaty and you get cold sit you sit down in locker room end up telling stories and jokes so the big thing before an actual game is just to get locked back in mentally I know as a quarterback I start going through the script talk to my receivers hey what do you have on this play talk to my offensive line just make sure everybody's mind is in it because the last thing you want is to not be sluggish because of this weather delay yeah again not a long delay 7:32 is the new kickoff time so we'll be with you until then but just enough to kind of throw off your Rhythm but NC State this school in general the Athletics program in general has been on a role they've been in Rhythm all of 2012 24 so we're going to show you all of it how about gymnastics the women took home the ACC Championship in the sports first season back in the conference since 1984 by the way they also won it that year too so I guess you can consider it back to back men's basketball team how about this five games in five days they won in DC in the ACC tournament to punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament and then they made it all the way to the final four under Kevin Keats women's team also found success in March and into April reaching their first final four since that 979 season losing to the eventual national champ South Carolina West Moore had himself a season and then maybe the craziest one of all Abby lampy she's now the two time world champion of the annual Cooper Hill cheese Rolling competition this is a sport you guys that like a stunt double thing or something a she rolls down hill and how about baseball be careful making it all the way to the College World Series in Omaha fourth time in program history and it was awesome so now um hey no pressure on the football team now as they get ready to kick off this season and there's Dave Dorne heading into his 12th season 9 and4 overall record last year just shy of that double digit win season and you know that's something they're still very hungry about and they got a new man under Center a guy named Grayson mcau you may have heard of him before coming over from Coastal Carolina a three-time Sun Belt player of the year over 10,000 yards passing in his entire collegiate career and this guy ACC Rookie of the Year Casey concept Shion he terrorized defenses last year H he's coming back to do it again with the wolf pack so I mentioned the word expectations quite a bit because there are expectations in this building externally nationally when it comes to the wolf pack this season so if I ask the question from you what are your expectations for the pack this season they are what EJ well when you make investments in the transfer portal like they did you have to take that next step you know it's to me all an All or Nothing type of situation especially with the age that you have on this team a lot of seniors a lot of guys like Grayson McCall who's played a lot of college football so there's no excuse now and they not that they've ever made excuses but I think that coach Doran saw an opportunity and said hey look I have some pieces coming back if we can add and fill some voids and some spots and add some H octane to this offense because that's all they need they've always had defense the defense always keeps them in the game they have an offense that can go out there and be a lead of this team that's when NC State can take that next step and get the Charlotte I don't think there's any question about that and it's almost a situation where all the stars are aligning it's that you know planetary lineup where okay this is the time because we have all this talent coming in we have a quarterback that we feel so good about we got receivers to now compliment casy concepion oh by the way the schedule we love it let's take advantage of that and how are they able to do that uh is going to be fascinating to see I don't think I'm quite ready to say Championship or bust because I think there's a lot out there for this team and a lot of things that they can accomplish but and here when you look at it obviously Tennessee and Clemson early after after that let's run the table and you you finish at Georgia Tech at North Carolina which we know always difficult but that's the goal and and I would say at a minimum Eddie 10 wins is the basement of what this team is hoping to acquire wow yeah I mean they finished the season hot one five of the last six you're coming in with confidence already and then you add those pieces as well this is pretty much a warm-up game before you get going that Tennessee game is going to be a huge one and then you got another week until Clemson so two of tough challenges within the first four weeks get by those and maybe take one of those win one of those games and then you're in a great position but you're right I mean this team doesn't have many excuses anymore the quarterback position is solidified with a guy who's proven at the college level you add it to the running back the offensive line is stable so it's go time for the wolf pack all right so the offensive coordinator here is Robert anay and you guys keep talking about weapons and we'll get deeper and deeper into that as we get closer to kickoff now under 40 minutes but there he is as he's a pretty happy man right now probably with the amount of weapons they added through the portal yeah and he should be uh because it's not even just the talent it's also the experience and play callers want guys who know what they're doing like when you call a play you want to be able to trust this and that is going to get done and when you have players that are played a lot of college football uh that's to be expected but I also want to see how does he expand on this offense too in year two you got a lot of offensive lineman that have returned uh and I feel like he's always had an explosive offense and now you have the pieces to really run that kind of offense yeah I remember talking to to Robert and I last year when we would have meetings before the games that we had on the ACC Network Prime broadcast and he would say look we've invited wide receivers to the party we're just waiting for some to show up outside of KC and now it doesn't feel like they're going to have that problem and a big reason for that is cuz the guy who's going to be throwing them the football in one Grayson McCall as I mentioned three time sunb player of the year has a ton of experience collegiately last year's season cut a little bit short as he dealt with injury but still a successful season nonetheless he is healthy and he has all those weapons at his disposal and Coach Robert and I did say of all the first year quarterbacks that he's had to coach when he's gotten them for their first year he's been the best in terms of what's between the ears picking up what he has in store for him in that Playbook so excited to see Grayson McCall who's going to have the keys to this really really really nice shiny new offense here in Raleigh so he swapped out the guys for a guy we know very well here in the Atlantic Coast Conference that's commissioner Jim Phillips who just got back from overseas guys uh Ireland was a really good time fancy meeting you here just saw you there uh not too long ago I know I know where are we where are we I what time is it nobody really knows when you think back at the weekend that was between Georgia Tech and Florida State and everyone taking over Dublin what's your reflection on it it was amazing yeah I mean as you look at maybe 18 months ago when we were trying to set the the game up what we felt it could potentially do and and what it ended up being reality was even far greater you were there I think having a chance to talk about the ACC all last week in week zero um the center of college football's attention to have college game day make their first trip outside of the US uh you saw the numbers 5 million viewership incredible there we are look at us EJ Manuel there too I think that was before uh and or after your dance lessons you and EJ yeah you're next promise one day you'd die anyways it was uh it was spectacular it just was and what it showed uh a few things the ACC plays great football that game was as good of a game as you could have scripted and it came down literally to the very last play and um two great teams Florida State phenomenal team Georgia Tech phenomenal and um gets us ready for tonight which I'm excited about and I and I will say something about this group here uh tonight in NC State um the last four years in the cfp there there's only seven schools m in the country that had been in the top 25 all four of those years yeah two from the SEC two from the Big 10 Notre Dame and two from the ACC Clemson and NC State yeah uh I think at times in our league NC State doesn't get nearly enough credit but that's a that's a perfect example of if you were to ask everyone or a lot of people in the country that maybe weren't as knowledgeable you know who would those seven teams be I don't know if NC State would be part of it but they are I mean great coaching great group of young men and uh I'm excited to see them play tonight cuz I think they could be a really really good team in our league I think we all do credit work credit is due and that's a testament to what Dave Dorne has built here in Raleigh I think another thing we learned this past weekend in Ireland and after that game is is depth here in the ACC and it feels like more than ever this league is wide open five six seven teams who could potentially hoist a trophy uh when we're in Charlotte in December and and I think we need to look at that as a positive thing competitive depth here in the conference commissioner no question no question last year you remember we had 11 teams qualify for bowl games out of 14 uh best percentage of anyone in the country I think that speaks to the level of what you just described I don't know if anyone knows who can win this league you know people talk about this school or that school in the and that's that's the beauty of the conference that any given week anyone can beat anyone else but as you go through the year there are going to be some teams that maybe you didn't think preseason were going to be quite as good as they are and uh and I'm I'm really I'm thrilled about that cuz I think that's what makes our league really special and has made it special over the years and we talk whenever we're together about narrative right a national narrative and the ACC has a massive opportunity this weekend to begin to write that narrative early in the season with a lot of of Now power four matchups uh really all along the coast and West Coast too right you and I have talked about this and this weekend is one one but we have 27 games this year in non-conference in the ACC that we're playing Power for uh other you know other power for uh programs as well as Notre Dame and and you're talking about if you look at the top 25 and others receiving vote votes that's what a majority of those games are against last year we finished 11 to9 against the SEC and the Big 10 those are good football conferences but you think about the games we won last year that helped create the narrative throughout the year we need to do the same thing cuz whether you think it's fair or not the perception is how do you do against other really good conferences in the non-conference and that starts to kind of trend towards how people feel about your overall League oh well we're happy that you stopped by even though I know there's weather outside but making some time for us here and I know this is just the beginning for you this weekend we're going to be all around the country and so will you making your Rounds Around the ACC um yeah shortly after 7:30 here at Carter Finley and I'd say the toughest part of the night is now for both Kerwin Bell and Dave dorant Tom because now they're playing a waiting game of something they really wanted to start at 702 which means all the more for hydration and and you know it's 90 plus out here you're in the evening time you've been working the last 2 to 3 days to make sure you've got enough fluids they're in that room it's salt pets it's pickle juice right it's orange slices and there's a lot of ice on a lot of bodies so they're just going to make sure they're hydrated we don't want to be cramping out out here tonight all right both teams have come back out to the playing surface here in Raleigh the natural grass we didn't get any rain here at all there was no lightning in the area but within the 8 miles of course that's the uh procedural piece that has to take place so how the teams been spending that time downstairs where we get to welcome Dana Bo to ACC Prime Time come on West and luk we don't got pickle juice here we're classy in Raleigh North Carolina we got smoothies I spent some time in the NC State locker room they stayed loose but hydration was a key it's 93° down here on the field like you said Tom no rain but they stayed loose lots of music laring from the locker room but hydration is going to be huge their assault pellets given out and they're just trying to stay loose but the team's excited there's nothing worse as an athlete than the hurry up and wait game but they seem excited and Western Carolina used it as an advantage they also spent time hydrating staying loose and foam rolling but the real MVPs are Taylor tanom and the Huddle crew who hustled inside you guys staying cool and dry out [Music] there we are absolutely cool and dry in here which is the benefit of being kicked off field no I'm just kidding our our credentials are are just fine it's nice and by the way the facilities are awesome and we appreciate NC State for accommodating us moving all the furniture out so we can uh move on in but but guys it is it is hot out there and they mention juice you big pickle juice guys no only when I had that's old schoolo kind of mustard for the cramps yeah a little bit of salt cuz it has hand pickles in there true didn't know that that's you wouldn't cramp I didn't Superior like was responsible yeah respect I'm a salty sweater there's nothing I can do it's like a magnesium so let me so let me ask you because obviously the expectation is NC State walks away with a win tonight what do you want to see from NC State tonight when they do walk off this field them to be clean I I wanted to come out the offense to be sharp no turnovers I to see the offensive line dominate up front uh get Jordan Waters going get some confidence in some of the new guys and the defense to to be outout be what NC State's defense typically is stop the run and then let these cornerbacks lock up on the outside I'm excited to see these wide receivers man are they as good as I kind of expect them to be you know there's a lot of talent some talent that came in obviously the Freshman Phenom from Ohio State uh I think he's going to be absolutely electric with Noah Rogers and then of course you have Grimes coming in as well from Wake Forest to add to Casey concepion on top of joliee coming in the tight end so those guys are are loaded to me how good are they going to be I can't wait to see I want to see Rhythm and that kind of goes along with what Eddie said about being clean but with rhythm use this as a preseason game no disrespect to Western Carolina it is what it is you have Tennessee the next week of course don't look too ahead to that matchup but Tennessee is potentially a top 10 offense in the country so you got to be able to put some points on the board so I would say tonight get some Rhythm on offense feel good about yourself going the week two I lied too I I did the IVs I felt guilty I wasn't going to say anything but I was like he did something special I was like I just Li I do the B12 shot in the IV yeah yeah same same I would probably need all of the above all right obviously we are in a weather delay here also for North Carolina they will be kicking off late tonight in Minnesota was supposed to be 8:00 has since been pushed back to 9:00 because of weather up there in Min how you that was actually a pretty good accent so let's dive into Carolina's offseason storyline Summer started with a three-man quarterback competition Max Johnson Connor Harold jacobe chrisell he transferred back in decision now between Johnson and Harold a familiar face though it doesn't matter who it is going to be handing off to running back Mari Hampton who returns to Chapel Hill after earning First Team all ACC honors last year and this is a familiar face as well Jeff Collins this offseason hired as defensive coordinator for the Tar Heels and he has some big dogs coming back in power eeko there in the middle and up front Cayman Rucker who had a great season last year and I just talked about it with the commissioner but want to hammer this point home again because these non-conference games here early are important last year the ACC 11- n against the Big 10 in SEC you see the breakdown there and uh tonight it all starts with UNCC and and Minnesota how important significant is a game like this for the league but also really for North Carolina moving forward this season it's really important for North Carolina because you want to start out fast and Minnesota's a good football team uh but you want to find out who your quarterback is and and that's going to start week one whe whether it's Max or Conor Harold somebody needs to come out and take over the job and so both of them may play uh you know what you have in the running game uh this offensive line is big they got bigger they got a 68 tackle they got a 67 tackle but can you play the whole game can you dominate the line of scrimmage from the start to the finish uh and so I'm I'm interested in seeing that but uh it's really important for North Carolina to get back on track yeah it really is and and the interesting thing with the quarterback situation e to me you've got a opposite guys completely in my opinion where you have a guy that is very experienced has played in the SEC has played in Crazy environments has great stats as well a guy that has really done well when he was available not hurt and then you have a young guy that is so explosive maybe runs a 4-3 can kill kill you in a bunch of different ways but has no experience on the road first game I'm going with the guy I'm going with the old if they're even I'm going with the older guy and then we can reevaluate week two and see who gives us the best chance I find it very odd if a Coach playing a nonon good opponent this would be a different if they were playing the FCS team or again no disrespect to Western Carolina it's completely different game you need to beat Minnesota especially if you want to have a Resume Builder toward the end of the season if you want to be that runner up to get in the playoff or the champ but I feel like it it should be Max Johnson just because of that experience he's played in big games before um I would feel the most confident going in with him just because of what I've seen on tape but on the flip side Connor har has been there he knows his team he knows the offense so you would assume like he would probably take that step and training camp and if he haven't made that decision to go to Harold that means that they're probably even but do you even bring Max in if you knew that he was the guy I don't you exactly and then the nil uh investment too like you still paid the man so right at the end of the day I need to see you know mean otherwise what we paying you for the S Seline and but at the end of the day whoever the quarterback is hand it right hand it left get out way get out the way I mean amarian Hampton's going to eat but it will be interesting because this is a big 10 team that they're going to load up the box when I think big 10 I think hitters little bit slower but they're going to load that thing up and play defense well e I'll add this real fast before you go Eddie because Florida State probably thought they could run the ball right and left as well Jordan Tech has seven eight guys in the box and so teams like Minnesota are going to do that against Amari Hampton just out of respect to him as a so last year when they played he only had like 46 yards so they stopped the run last year so it is going to be important for some quarterback step up yeah and you had Drake May and so if Max does start Conor Harold he can come in and be like that spark plug six man almost to give the offense some juice I mean it like I don't like it I like you like to just go with one yeah just pick a guy to me but if he's not playing well or it's not going well the offense is stagnant you need but don't you think in a game like this you you should know who guy is well how about this though if if he's just so talented it's a package it's wild cat like let him you get extra hat you get extra hat you're running them I'm just I'm not doing I'm not doing series I'm not trading series but you know if you got a Tim TBO on the sideline you're going to play Tim when he's a freshman not saying that that's the same thing but situationally let's find a way if he's deserved that if he's earned that well we we'll find out shortly who it is going to be at least starting the game under Grayson McCall yeah QB W here three times Sun Bel Player of the Year at his time there in Coastal Carolina really put Coastal Carolina on the map in my opinion but this is a quarterback that has a great pedigree a ton of experience he's ex he's accurate with the football does a great job also with decision making and now you unlock him in this Robert and not offense you got a ton of receivers to throw to one of those guys KC concep on so we'll see how often he'll get that ball to KC yeah and I'm excited to see this running back right here Jordan Waters he's a guy that man I think can fully unlock the Run game from NC State that is something that has been a little bit lacking from this team not even a little bit quite frankly it's been bad but guess what he's here to save the day this offensive Line's going to be the real deal I think that's honestly Eddie what has been holding these guys back he's going to unlock it fully for them yeah I'll tell you a guy who has not held back this offense and that is casy concepion this dude reminds me of Percy Harvin the former Florida great he could do it all hand it to him with a hand off you could throw him a screen pass or he could take it deep the next thing for him is to improve his route run he's got the mentality that you need he's got the skill to be a potential first round draft pick he's going to put on the show tonight yeah this corner right here Aiden white I'm sure he went back and forth with Casey concepion in practice and he's a long rangey corner a guy that can run the ball especially excuse me run down the pass when the ball's in the air I'm expecting him to have a big year certainly will be a draft pick at the end of the season but if NC State wants to be elite they have to get some great play from Aiden white especially out there on the edge on the island how about this guy right here Davin van they say his blood is in the bricks that's what kind of leader he is that's how long that this guy has been here he is an absolute weapon for NC State when you talk about leadership when you talk about veteran presence but also what he does on the field we sat here in Raleigh for the Road show and kind of asked him his goals he said double digit sacks quite frankly and uh I'm I'm really excited to see how can he take that next step uh because he is a war Daddy on that defensive line here's what I took from this little field pass experience they have some dudes on this NC State team which is why the expectations are so high now we do want to know they lost a dude in Payton Wilson who got drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers and we know everything he's done over the course of his career here in Raleigh last year ACC Defensive Player of the Year B nck and buckus Award winner best linebacker in the entire country and people had to find out the hard way when when they played pton Wilson so this begs the question how do you replace you're not going to replace Payton Wilson the person how do you replace the production well and that's the great point because I I think that um people can get a little bit too caught up with who's replacing pton nobody's replacing pton but who's going to fill that spot who's going to play that position now that's the interesting thing to going to be production wise who's going to be able to step up there I think Shawn Brown I think he's going to be a guy that that steps up moving him down from safety so his instincts are going to be good he's he is fine playing closer to the ball and honestly talk with Coach Gibson he say he might be a little bit better pass rusher which that's fun because they're blitzing right they're bringing some heat there I'm fascinated to see how much like is there Growing Pains is is there an absent leadership void or does the team rise up yeah well I think you can also replace it with scheme and uh you can hide hide some of those things if you do have some deficiencies but you know ultimately I'm sure coach Dorne you know coach Gibson will probably say we got other guys that can come in that were able to watch pton Wilson go through his time here at State and then come in and still get that type of production I don't think they need to have a guy that's getting 120 130 tackles a game but I think by committee this team has enough experience and more than enough Talent it still be good this year too collectively they're going to do it because you if you watch the tap Payton's running in front of everybody making plays well there's other guys there so they're they're all in position make plays so this is going to be a great defense because they're going to play together as a team that's what coach Dorne preaches coach Gibson they preach it's a family that defense is going to play like one and emch you were here on the road trip and I know they were really high on the secondary here brought in a couple of dudes in the transfer portal including a name we know in the ACC and Jihad Carter uh the expectations High there in the back part of that defense there is zero question I mean they expect that to be an absolute strength of this team you look at the length you look at the size uh it probably starts with Aiden I mean a guy that is electric I think he has a chance to be the best corner in this conference right there with Dorian strong going back and forth who's going to do it each and every day and then you you mention the safety play that we're going to see the experience that they have if you have a guy number one in Aiden white that can shut down the side of the field and then you have a hard-hitting guy uh at the safety position or the other cornerback that's able to to fluctuate or move around maybe have a nickel that slides in there it solves a lot of problems so when you have that type of secondary maybe there's a little buffer for the defensive line a little buffer for the linebackers we'll be fun to see what that tells me is you might end up getting covered sacks too exactly because if you have corners that are doing their job again I cannot speak to how important it is to have experience for this football team that's why I like them to really make a run potentially to get to Charlotte and if you have corners that are staying with their man you know this when you break the pocket as receivers and quarterbacks we thinking scramble dill and I feel like these guys are used to that type of offenses within the ACC and hopefully that helps some of those defensive tackles get home for a sa yeah I believe and with coach Gibson scheme the pressure when you could play press manto man coverage and you trust those Corners it frees him up to dial up even more blitzes they were already aggressive but if you feel good about your Corners you can be that much more aggressive and that's what he said he said that's what it allows me to do because I don't have to worry about Zone coverage I don't have to worry about trying to hide or protect anybody from that standpoint in the secondary we can go we can be as exotic as we want not even look on the edges I'll tell you what when this defense reminds me of the old school Miami defense because they l up and played manto man impressed you and you knew that it was going to happen but it was nothing you could do about it and so this defense reminds me of that yeah Tony Gibson the defensive coordinator has one gear and that's all the way there's no doubt about that and we're looking forward to seeing what they put on the field if my math serves me about 16 minutes away from kickoff I was not a math major but I think I got that one right kickoff set for 732 after a short weather delay here because of lightning oh about 15 minutes I'm getting in my ear from the for this NC State game against Western Carolina let's talk a little bit about The Playmakers dive a little bit deeper because we've alluded to the Arsenal being stacked this year give me the playmaker you want to see the most I know easy answer might be KC concepion but there's a lot of new names here it was but Noah Rogers is the guy that's jumping off at me right now he had a great spring game he's going to be that guy that's running those end Cuts catching those tough passes over the middle uh but he's also got the ability to take it deep and make plays after the catch show he's going to be crucial for the success of this offense because everybody ke or Casey they're going to need another guy to step up let me tell you a little fun story about my first time seeing Noah Rogers here in Camp one-on-one with Aiden white blows the doors off right by him very next time they go at it again Aiden white wins so you have that good on good all Camp I mean to go against that a guy like that is such a luxury uh but I'm excited to see Joe Lee too I mean we we think back to Robert anai coach Robert anai and the offenses that he had at Virginia and at Syracuse he had dynamic tight ends guys that could really make things happen or a dynamic just X Factor guy when you think back to the things that they did with multiple quarterbacks on the field there so excited to see how much of a weapon will Joe Lee be for these guys I want to see Jordan Waters go off uh ran into him in the elevator trying to go down into the field he said he was nervous but I think really what he meant was he was excited you know he was been playing at Duke for a long time got his degree from duke which I thought was awesome that but also now you know this was a business decision to come here to NC State he probably saw the writing on the wall hey there's probably a better opportunity for me to get more carries at NC St need back exactly and his coach was out so it's a good spot for him and I'm sure NC State's fans are going to bring him in with open arms and uh you talk about no Rogers these other guys as as far as getting production out wide they need him to play Elite if he gets a th000 yards this team will for sure be close to winning 10 games if he can get a th without a doubt the crazy part about him is that his best football is ahead of him he last year he only had one game where he had 20 carries and that was it the rest of them were 13 12 they shared the ball at Duke so here it's going to be different you got to run that off through him I know that they got a lot of Talent on the outside and some new weapons but Robert and I hasn't been one to run the football but for NC State to be good and to be where they should be potentially in Charlotte you have to run the football and I think the The X Factor kind of within the offense too is is just going to be how much does Grayson run because at at Coastal Carolina he ran a good bit now he was injured last year and that obviously affects numbers and averages and all that but he's a little bit more athletic than people want to give him credit for I think that that will be the piece cuz it's an extra hat and it's a guy that you have to pay attention to every time I'm F we probably won't see it today but week two that could be a massive piece yeah no doubt Grayson McCall is a gamer but that that's perfect to tee you up emac on this offensive line cuz that that is a strong point coming into this season and they went into the portal added a center and obviously uh they have some talent and and experience coming back it it was such a privilege for me when we were at camp we we got to see the things and Coach 2J invited me into his room and said hey let's watch some film watch some tape with us see how these guys do and to see big Zeke the transfer you're alluding to from Notre Dame command the room I mean he he's a brand new face but those guys just respected him so much and he would he would be coaching up a young guy coach would ask a question he not that he wasn't paying attention but he was helping somebody else he would look at it analyze it boom had the answer immediately and I mean that that type of leadership that type of ball player cuz he's killing dudes out on the field too is exceptional and then you have a a left tackle who they call Escalade in Anthony Belton who is so big and Nimble remember Escalade street ball Man legend RP uh but he he is a guy that I think can really Elevate and I think back uh to to Louisville what's my guy's name played left tackle for Louisville drafted by the Jets oh maai beckon maai beckon he can be that type of guy cuz he's just huge you can't teach that type of size I think we see him shoot up the draft boards this year all right that's High Praise uh for this offensive line so we'll see what happens uh this place is a really tough place to play Carter Finley Stadium and good for them because they have a great schedule this year I know tickets have been sold out since like June 3rd uh and you see the numbers here we know how hard it is for teams to go into Death Valley at Clemson and win it it's tough here too what makes the environment here so difficult to play well the fans care about this football team and and really if NC State's great or if they're not that great the fans still show up like no matter what kind of season they're having and also the way this St stadium is built in Carter Finley the fans are right on top of you that that bizard sideline it's tight like you can hear every single thing they saying to you some of them is not so nice to be honest you you want go home and say that to your mom but I will say like the fans go hard for this football team and you know I think this team also understands and Coach Doran talks about all the time like pack Nation all that kind of stuff they want to provide a product for those fans to be proud of and if they can really hold their attention cuz like I said they already show up if they're really good they really going to show up you have some sellouts out here I I never got the privilege to play at Lane Stadium played at do do this place was the second hardest place I ever played in the ACC exactly what you just said it feels like they're just over you and the way the the things set up there uh with the new sound system the new Jumbotron it's even better it's unbelievable I make it I think it makes it tough when the defense is good when you're playing against a really good defense and they get loud on third and fourth Downs it makes it hard impossible to communicate hey I'm looking back like what' you say what you say e what was that but then also you throw in the color scheme actually actually the uniform when them boys walk out of that tunnel in all black or a nice selection and the Wolf Pack you throw in a wolf pack and intimidating mask changes everything matters when you're talking about intimidation Factor my high school color is shout out Cooper City Cowboys uh real quick we have about 90 seconds left this is week one your greatest memory from from a week one game you have one you're playing yeah I bought out I bought out against Western Michigan I believe it was we beat him 63 to nothing how I'm praying that this game goes uh two touchdowns did my thing yeah yeah else uh I mean my first time senior year you know as as a true starter throughout on on you know that was cool that was wow we had it ready we had it ready why you do that boy like that Eddie yeah he know he knew and warm up imagine he watching the show right now he's P catching the Stray catching straight uh but it's always fun you're always excited uh College we always played not very good teams in the first game so nothing that I'm going to go Crown home about we we supposed to beat people 63 you are I was a freshman then though so I was hyped yeah ASO was in the league but yeah week one is a big deal you just want to get those Jitters out there just go play tired to play your own team go play somebody else and we've reiterated just how big this game is because you never want to overlook your first opponent but Tennessee awaits on the other side for NC State as they have a season where they hope last year finished nine wins they hope to get to that double digit win season for just the second time in program Conference a fascinating story as the Okala junr Cole Gonzalez Tom and he is a gunslinger in every sense of the word he's one of those guys that may not wow you with all of the physical attributes of a rocket arm or great size great speed but he knows where to put the football he has the intangible traits of anticipation and decisiveness I'm really excited to see him in this highflying offense Branson Adams is his running back in motion you see Calvin Jones Gonzalez to throw hit as he does and it's batted Away by Kaden forom the linebacker to Marcus kulie T-Mac was in pressuring the but they're not capable of doing that they they are getting punished on the line of scrimmage and again it it is like a curse at this point NC State cannot establish a run now listen it's one half and maybe they get woken up in the second half cuz they need to cuz it's embarrassing when you look at the potential that they have on that offensive line with that big old running back we just saw a fourth in one play from shotgun essentially outside Zone that's crazy crazy that's a terrible you know just position to put your guys in slam it up the middle get on your Center hand the ball out it's a six-year quarterback he can't take snaps under Center like what are we doing there I I didn't like that at all hopefully they come out with a whole new energy because that effort was was horrendous well you m before they ran that play we were talking about it I was like they're going to get stuffed because you got fourth and one you're already six yards behind the line of scrimmage but every coach is different the the other part to this and we talked about this in pregame uh the the tough part in college you don't don't have a preseason so you don't know what your team is really going to look like on paper against your defense and the scrimmage yeah it's great everybody looks awesome right but then when you actually getting live bullets how are guys want to respond is it ugly yes it is but the good thing is you have a whole new second half you want to be optimistic about it they have to come out with a sense of urgency protect the football and get the Run game going that's felt like the times where they pressed there was receivers from Western Carolina they couldn't get off the ball that quickly so then that leads to coverage sacks as well but the other part offensively for NC State you cannot turn it over against this team we talked about in the pregame you give them confidence and what do they have right now confidence and so if they can try to shift that momentum you can hear a pin drop in here right now it's not that loud yeah so NC State's offense has to come out here firing in the second half and you know Dave Dorne I'm sure is giving a nice fiery speech Tom listen this is you know was it pretty at all times no are we going to see a ton of that this weekend yes very few te teams are immune to it no preseason games you're I don't care who the opponent is there's going to be a lot to clean up from week one to week two Dave Doran clearly has a lot of work to do he knows it staff knows it but they found a way to win and they found a way to play well hard fought Victory but a win in nonetheless Taylor tanom sitting alongside former Florida State quarterback first round pick EJ Manuel former Clemson Captain offensive lineman Eric mlan Virginia Tech Hall of Famer 9-year NFL vet Eddie Royal uh and I credit Grayson mcau because he fought through adversity uh his accuracy's normally there the first half wasn't him the fact that he stayed in was tough kept those receivers in that and that offense intact and and focused on the right goal I give him a lot of credit for bouncing back yeah a couple of things number one casy conception Bonafide Superstar I mean just when he touches the ball his explosion is so much faster than anybody else on the field I mean the burst is incredible uh and Jordan Waters loved what I saw from him in the fourth quarter specifically I was begging and pleading for some rushing yards it took literally four quarters of football in and again when you're playing a FCS team that wear and tear is going to happen really quickly that is not going to be the case against Tennessee you're going to have to start so much faster but a W's a we lessons in a win are much better than lessons in a loss no question no question when you go back and watch the tape tomorrow as a team sure there is a ton for them to fix and again they don't have preseason games in college football uh so this is to be expected but nonetheless KC concepion is the reason why not only they won the game why they were in the game truthfully because Western Carolina had them up on the ropes like they were in a boxing match you have thought man is is this a are they the ACC team like you know what I mean like that's how bad it was in the first half so this is something I'm sure Coach Dave Dorne is going to look at and say hey guys we have to have an edge moving forward against Tennessee because if we don't we're going to get embarrassed on that I'll tell you what Western Carolina executed so well I mean they look really fast very physical and obviously hung in this game for well coach as well very well coach that's what you get from teams like this who come into this house wanting to knock off an ACC opponent in their first game of the season we'll dive much deeper into the game but let's show you what panned out here at Carter Finley Stadium over the last couple of hours NC State ranked 24th in the country hosting Western Carolina it was packed season tickets have been sold out really since the beginning of June so people are hyped for this season big reason is because of this guy Grayson McCall new signal caller late in the first quarter NC State down 7 nothing Mcall to Casey conception for the 17 yd touchdown Eddie I mean Casey what can you say yeah you got to find the best player on the field and you want to get him the ball as much as you can great job fighting through contact being to go down low and make this play he stepped up all night and NC State needed every ounce of it all right second quarter we go NC State down again 14 to7 McCall pop pass to who else but casy concepion for the TD Max KY left KY right shades of last year this won't last too long but again special player Casey all over the board tied 14 at halftime then third quarter we go NC State with the lead but not for long here as Western Carolina takes it back Branson Adams up the middle they lead 2117 Tony Gibson not loving what he's seeing from his defense there upset alert uhoh and Raleigh but energy still good fourth quarter second and 10 from the 35 mall to conception EJ stop me if you've heard this before absolutely look NC stays down in the fourth quarter but Casey concepion you put the ball in his hands he makes positive things happen he is a savior in this football game you have a playmaker like that EJ at your disposal man what does that feel like as a QB yeah was it's great just keep throwing him the football again I mean you're down to Western Carolina in the fourth quarter he bails you out yeah Grayson McCall fired up NC State back on top 24 to 21 8 minutes to go now in the fourth same score State Driving McCall we talked about all the weapons they have Justin Jolie 22 yard game and this is the type of stuff he can do I mean he's rolling to his right sees his tight end it's kind of an overhead pass but at the end of the day give it to your running back and get out of my way Jordan Wat would not be denied this is huge for his confidence especially going into the next week yeah he was not going to be denied on that touchdown so NC State increases their lead they put a little pad on it to make sure they could breathe at the end of this one in the end 38-21 the final for NC State uh Jordan Waters again continuing to do his thing and uh I don't know what more you can say about this guy because he was solid in the second half after he started off the game with an almost fumble so why not finish it off with a couple of TDS and there you go a nice statistic for you 9 and0 in season openers at home under Dave Dorne 11 and one overall in home openers under his leadership after the game you you talked about number seven guys Jordan Waters caught up with Dana Vo Jordan first game in the wolf pack red how does it feel to come out with the win it was fun man it was real fun slow start but it's not it's about how you finish and fanish strong you said it's a little bizarre still seeing red how does it feel now amazing we got some of the best fans in the nation they welcomed me they kept me up when I was down this game and I love it you told me this week you're bigger and stronger here in the wolf pack red talk about the pressure now that you have so many more eyes on you how do you deal with that uh I think that what's happening today man I I was so anxious and excited to come in and I just want to play my game I was not myself and I had to go in the half time luckily my teammates kept me up talking talking me through it and um we came out and finish you had a hack of a game keep shining thanks for the time thank you have a good [Music] one yeah Jordan Waters in that second half 101 yards on nine carries after they struggled a bit running the football in the first half EJ if we are to walk away positive from this game give me something positive after you watch this finish well the second half was improved on the on the defensive side too because the defense had to come up with some stops uh there was some big gaping holes against their run game uh the the secondary was missing tackles out on the edge guys were open on easy out routes like really if Western Carolina paid attention they could have just kept banging out routes when they played soft coverage and went up and down the field but nonetheless you have to be happy with a victory even though you didn't play your best football and it can't keep harping like they didn't have preseason games man this is a rough Rusty kind of performance and thankfully they won it it is I mean we've talked about it you know it feels like all day you really don't know you don't know cuz you you know we rarely tackle anymore we rarely do scrimmages there's so many rules you can't do two a a all these things that you can't do that is football it's real man and when you get out there and it matters and you haven't hit anybody uh you know in a long time it it's very hard to do I was encouraged with what I saw in the fourth quarter but again I cannot stress and maybe maybe they were looking forward this is great this is fantastic look at the rushing yards y'all first three quar 79 rushing yards and then they just put it on them yep and and you that's what we want to see emac to me that's that's a a FBS team wearing down FCS that's that's what that's still alarming but it still happened yeah and it did it did happen but you know now you playing backups from Western Carolina you supposed to put up 100 plus in my opinion how much Eddie do you think were they trying to be vanilla were they looking at next week how much did that have to play with this second half early the first half may be trying to be vanilla but then they brought out the the trick play which got called back because of a penalty um but scheme as well Robert and I is learning this offense as well they new pieces and and you feel like they should be great from game one but he's got to learn what this team does well and he's going to learn hey maybe on fourth down you don't run it sideways you run at this team and so that's an adjustment that coaches can make as well so they're learning along the way I'm intrigued because there's so many plays to be made there were some great calls out there and Grace Mcall makes a better throw it's a big play and and and it's not as close of a game but the fact that they missed on so many big play opportunities probably would have been a touchdown screaming down the field Noah Rogers over the middle Casey conceps on a couple times you hit him and stride that's a touchdown so the film's going to be ugly and it's not going to be fun whenever they do watch it but they're going to learn from this a lot to be encouraged by because as we've noted uh next week you wake up tomorrow okay you turn the page Tennessee awaits you in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium all right so you're going into that game what can we anticipate from NC State after they watch this film head into playing a really good vs team well a motivated team um they're going to come out and the first quarter I expect them to be on fire to play to play like the NC State Defense that we're used to seeing and Kaden forom being out that first drive they lost their middle linebacker the first drive hel talking people didn't talk about that enough you lose your leader the first drive that kind of shakes up the defense and so I expect the defense to play better I expect them to be more sound communicate a little bit better Western Carolina did a great job scheming they ran some pick plays against manto man maybe disguise it a little bit better and so there's some challenges for that defense I do want to see him tackle better but just start faster one thing that is going going to be really a massive point of emphasis is you better not let Nico Run free I mean he he is much more athletic much more Dynamic than this guy that they saw tonight and he was Blazing I mean you talk about that manto man against Iowa that guy got loose which is one of the best you know defenses in the entire country he is a big tall athletic dude that is going to try to get his and so what's the plan of attack what are you going to do are you going to spy do do you have you know Shawn Brown sitting there mirroring him every single move uh that he makes there because that young man is looking at this game like okay like there's a lot that I can take from this um but again was it on purpose was it vanilla it'll be interesting to see good thing for Coach Dave Dorne he has something to get mad of right like when he goes into the film room and they get back to practice Monday Tuesday Wednesday there should be an edge of like hey guys we got to dot all our eyes cross our L's man because we can't take anything for granted any rep for granted and we cannot have a slow start or early turnovers against Tennessee team you'll look up you'll be down 20 I mean this could be you have that mentality it makes it hard to stop you especially when you got a A coordinator like Robert and I diing up plays for you it is so much fun to watch you can try and stop 10 but uh good
