a victory to end a string of three tough losses in my view Tyrone willingham's not in any kind of trouble but you hear rum Midwest Charlie Weiss goes in there and the best thing Charlie Weiss probably ever did was he almost beat USC ler going to try to sneak in ahead he got in touchdown FC and over on the noted a sideline wow what a tough way to lose the Weiss watch is finally over Charlie Weiss out as Notre Dame's head football coach after five seasons a 35 and 27 record with one bowl win not good enough for one of the traditional powers in the game of all the fan bases I think Notre Dame's just the most delusional I mean how many coaches do you need to see struggle to realize maybe it's harder to win there I am so honored to be the head football coach here at Notre Dame there's a football coach and then there's the football coach at Notre D Brian Kelly who has done an absolutely remarkable job with the five hourish when you sign that contract now at Notre Dame you know exactly what you're getting into I have to recruit players of a certain academic level and I have to be in the conversation for a national championship on a somewhat consistent level and the Fighting Irish have finished an undefeated regular season the last coach win a National Championship at Notre Dame was Lou Holtz and don't think that doesn't come up every single season even now that we're into the Brian Kelly era and fires in zone touchdown B oh my what a road kill and they continue to just embarrass this Notre Dame defense there's questions about Brian Kelly he's had opportunities to win national championships two of them down the seam open man Ross again touchdown and in both instances Notre Dame got embarrassed I'm surprised I thought they would be much more competitive than they were today and a lot of that falls on Brian Kelly so the question about Brian Kelly is can he get it done but the question moving forward is can any coach get it done can any coach measure up to the legacy of all those coaches that came before them who won national championships what's unfair about the comparison is that college football today is so different than it was back in the 1920s 1930s when Notre Dame was rising up there are now 29 college football programs playing on the FBS level the recruiting base has shifted away from Notre Dame's region into the South into Texas into California and the money has changed there are now programs in the SEC that are making upwards of $40 million a year in Revenue so as the game has changed and as the game has shifted it has become much more difficult for Notre Dame to win national championships but of course those those facts don't matter when we're talking about the head coach who's being judged against whether he can win a championship or not I got this $1,000 camera for only $41 on DEH dealdash.com Online Auctions since 2009 this PlayStation 5 sold for only 50 this iPad Pro sold for less than $34 and this Nintendo switch sold for less than $20 I got this kitchen AIDS stand mixer for only $56 I got this barbecue smoker for 26 bucks and shipping is always greate go to dealdash.com right now and see how much you can save oh and I need these items printed with our logo by Friday certainly are you for imprint certain well we are for imprint certainty matters like the certainty of finding the perfect promo gear for gifting at for imprint exclusive items and quality Brands to wow your clients your customers and your team delivered on time go to for imprint.com and find some wow now go Blue go Blue you can sure tell who aren't thank you you sure tell who aren't the Notre D yes you can I think I contribute a lot of the hate because of the way I would say different things I see an individual and they say he went to University of Michigan say oh you couldn't get into Notre Dame huh you know I was recruited by Notre Dame hey I make play that's All now I remember walking around with the other recruits and uh remember I was humming the Michigan fight song like that's what I remember about Notre D I don't know if it's anything that I particularly despised about him at the time but when I find myself humming the Michigan fight song I Knew I'm not going there the mark of greatness is not just how many people love you how many people hate you because they're just sick of hearing about you they're sick of seeing you be successful and Notre aim is the greatest example of that in college football history as somebody who grew up in South Florida in the 1980s as somebody who is a Miami fan you were taught right away that you're going to hate Notre Dame I had a chance to go and see Notre Dame play Miami in the orange Bull and all I was there to do was not so much cheer for Miami but boo Notre Dame people think that Notre Dame thinks they're too good Smart Guys and all this kind of stuff so you know you got guys who just hate that they hate the fact that I went to Penn State Penn State is an incredible academic University you know I went to uh you know even Oklahoma all these you know have great academic reputations but when you say notame athlete everybody's like oh my God he must be a very smart and you just don't get that from other colleges man and people hate it 2017 Forbes made its list of the best academic universities that play major college football Notre Dame was 11th maaf he's going to score we've seen Stanford compete for a national championship title Texas one of the great public universities has won a national championship since Notre Dame did college football in general is a lot more comfortable with academic achievement than it ever has been strike wide open against the zone defense gall breaks a tackle comes free heads in zone forget about it you old SI columnist made the case Notre Dame is not nationally relevant Notre Dame is absolutely relevant even if they're having a down year they're relevant because people want to watch fans in South fans everywhere they may want to watch cuz they're root for Notre Dame or they want to see Notre Dame lose badly sharply pulls away hands it to Travis Thomas runs it right side he'll be stopped and so will a 43 game losing streak for Navy against Notre I don't think that you could take a school like University of Washington or even Georgia and people don't get that worked up about it they want to see Notre Dame lose badly if they hate Notre Dame what kind of schedule is Notre Dame getting away with you might be saying well Dan Notre Dame is an independent team the perception from the outside is that they're above the rules of college football they don't have to play the way every every body else does they don't play a conference Championship game going to catch him and they get their spot without being in a conference and it drives people bananas and Notre Dame fans love it and here come the pinstrip dius being independent has not hurt Notre Dame yet and the reason I say that is because Notre Dame got to play in a national championship game in the BCS against Alabama and they made the college football playoff in 2018 Notre name the first independent team to make the playoff those are two instances where they were not affiliated with a conference didn't have to play a conference Championship game and yet managed to either finish in the top two or the top four Notre Dame should be banned from college football you want to prove yourself join a conference we could go to California compete with Southern cow go to Texas that's why we will not become part of a conference because then you become Regional however we we had to have a place for the non-revenue sports to compete for the championship whether it be in tennis or track or golf that's why they had to have an identity with the ACC Notre Dame has agreed to make a commitment to the Atlantic Coast Conference they're just not getting fully married I think unquestionably in a host of Sports uh this is the best Athletic Conference in the country and we will the I35 Showdown deep in the Heart of Texas has drawn a capacity crowd and it features a pair of old Hometown friends going head to-head as the UTSA road runners out of the American Conference visit the Bobcats of Texas State University from the sunbel conference and welcome everybody to San Marcus Texas along with tyoka Jackson I'm Doug Sherman so glad you're here with us and not only is this a ride R game it is basically a game with a chance to keep alive hope of getting into this year's expanded college football playoff I know it's early in the season but both of these teams could track all the way to a spot at the table in the final 12 yeah to me this is a playoff Eliminator when you have outstanding teams playing in the group of five going against each other there's no question in my mind that the loser is out of that playoff hunt and so the intensity is going to be high I expect a hard hdden Affair here in Texas well we've got a couple of featured quarterbacks starting with Owen maau he's a Colorado transfer a left-hander who is dynamic and can be a big difference maker for the road runners well listen ow maau has great Bloodlines and we'll talk about that later but he also has everything you need to be a successful college quarterback he just needs reps now the problem is he's going to get reps against a very tenacious Bobcat defense he had an outstanding game last week but he's going to need to be better in week two than he was in week one meanwhile on the other side Jordan McLoud is in his fourth stop as a college football player first at USF then a couple of years at Arizona last year he blew up as the player of the year in the sun Bel conference at James Madison but now for his final year of Eligibility he has brought all of that dynamism here to Texas yeah when you usually see four programs on a players resume that's a bad sign red flag not with Jordan McLoud he's an outstanding quarterback and they love his ability to carve defenses up from the pocket you better get him moved off his spot or it's going to be a long long day the coach of Staff says that McLoud has instilled a ton of confidence this entire offense because of his presence in that huddle and one of the other big storylines here coming in the two coaches know each other from way back in the day GJ Kenny was the star quarterback in high school for Jeff trailer and now they go head to-head well first of all Gore High School outside of uh Tyler Texas is the real winner cuz they're going to win no matter what these both of these guys are alumni from that Squad and so how many times you can say that about a game like this in college football but two outstanding coaches that know each other very well no surprises today they're going to have to go out and execute to get this win no those two guys talk all the time this week though it's been a little bit different they put their friendship aside for the rest of the afternoon a rivalry game the I35 show kicks off when we come back to San Marcus Texas the ESPN is a spot for all your sports for the Saints and the cers for hot takes hell yeah and high stakes for breaking news breakaways and broken records for the W's and the for MLB SVP welcome this is Sport Center all in your TV if you can watch it year watch ESPN app one app One Tap get up what a it's so on if there's a chance for what you hope for and you dream for and how can you stand back in San Marcus Texas moments away from kickoff between UTSA and Texas State a couple of teams both receiving votes again this week in the National polls this is a non-conference game but a rivalry game to be certain and with the possibility this year with the expans college football playoff now with 12 teams and a team from the group of five getting a seat at the table tyoka this is a huge game I've heard ridiculous stuff like every game doesn't matter anymore in college football because of this playoff structure I say hogwash every game does matter and this is an example of that a lot of intensity and electricity in the air right now Texas state will receive the opening kickoff off of the foot of Tate Sandell and this is a dynamic return team for the Bobcats they led the nation in kick return yardage a year ago and both Cole Wilson and is miti had kicks returned for touchdowns on this Breezy afternoon here in Texas the football goes flying off the te and so one of the Special Teams players one of the cover players will hold the football in place for Tate sandal red shirt sophomore from last week week one he was five for five with touchbacks and with the wind he is six for six on the year and so the 2023 sunb Bel conference Player of the Year Jordan McLoud has switched teams within conference what a fun afternoon this should be watching Jordan McLoud play for the Bobcats I mean it's so crazy to see a POI Player of the Year transfer in conference I mean just imagine the type of culture you've got to have at Texas State to be to lure that guy away in terms of GJ Kenny and what he's building but again instant credibility instant confidence he brings into this locker room and I'm looking forward to watching him playing a new uniform yeah he replaces TJ Finley who was actually honorable mention all sunb conference last fall to the air a completion to Conor Fox the red shirt senior tight end Elliot Davidson the bound safety coming up to make the stop so M Leftwich the offensive coordinator does a great job of getting an easy throw from mlau to get him lathered up early that's bad news for this UTSA defense well they're going to have to keep an eye on number 21 ISM MTI the Junior from Murphy Texas gets the handoff and has nowhere to go stacked up and pushed back for little to no gain maybe he picked up one before ow and PeeWee coming off a big game week one against Kennesaw with his first tackle of the day that's the type of penetration you going to need against this run game because the Bobcats are excellent at running downhill with a big physical offensive line let's see what the defensive line dials up as Cyrus Simon Brandon Brown Joe Evans can wreak havoc on Third and long McLoud steps up fires in and out of the hands of the receiver and intercepted picked off at the 40 yd line by Zack Morris the first big play of the day is turned in by the road runners defense well just a dig route everything was great about the protection the ball was on time and on target but you got to catch it two hands on it that's all on you tip drill great job by Zach Morris seeing the ball grabbing the ball turnover early for this UTSA defense and that's a bad sign for the Bob catch Jaden Williams the Boston College transfer was the intended receiver coming off a terrific game week one against Lamar and so now we get our first look at Owen Macau Richard sophomore from Russ Texas as a true freshman a couple of years ago actually started three games in Colorado but when they made the coaching change he put his name in the portal before coach Prime got there and he is so happy to be back in the state of Texas and getting things started today for the road runners handing it off on first down bouncing it outside and stepping out of Bounds at about the 32 yd line is Robert Henry Jr a pickup of eight so this is the early key for this UTSA offense can they run the football effectively can they be efficient they want to be balanced they want to run the football didn't do a great job last week they're going to have to be better this week than be able to move this ball consistently play action Robert Henry is wrapped up immediately upon catching it and actually loses about four yds thanks to the excellent defense of Ben Bell well Ben Bell is a terrific pass rusher he can get after the quarterback but guess what he can also cover manto man coverage in space doing a great job of breaking down and bringing him down third and long keep an eye on number three Devin McKuen at the bottom of your screen he is their top receiver coming off in 11 catch performance week one empty backfield this ball should come out quick watch with stick routes and this defense last week had seven sacks they don't get home but the defense holds the pass from maau broken up by Bobby Crosby so defensively that's that's where you just lock him down Doug you know they have got to come out quick with that empty they know exactly what a first down marker is tight man coverage well on fourth down the offense stays on the field at the 38 yd line interesting very interesting a lot of confidence in this young inexperienced quarterback empty again Robert Henry motions to the far left timeout Tas St called by the Bon the first half 30 seconds do you think that was just a bluff tyoka or they going for it on fourth down I think they're going for it I you know that looked like they were going to try to do something again at the sticks from empty I like the timeout though from the Texas State Bobcat coaching staff because you get an opportunity now to talk this over this is a turnover if you can get us stop defensively pretty good field position so early big play in this football game well Jeff tayer now in his fifth year at the HM at UTSA and what a marvelous job he has done a 56-year-old native of as we mentioned Gilmer Texas he played at Steven F Austin back in the late 80s but uh he is one of the rising coaches in this conference and then his former quarterback who made it all the way to the NFL was on the practice squad of the New York Giants Philadelphia Eagles and now we are set for fourth down UTSA was one of one last week on fourth down five Bobcat dine should be one-on ones everywhere Macau gets rid of it it's CAU lean toward the sticks and he's not going to get there about a yard and a half short was Devin mckuin and that pass rush is so tenacious and maau has watched them on film all week he understands he understands that ball has to come out quick because you got all one on ones up front and that is a great operation nice route nice pass but you don't have enough time to run it to the sticks because if he holds that ball he's going to get hit Caleb Colt strong safety on defense and Dexter mcoy senior's defense gets the football back for the offens of Texas state Jordan McLoud who was intercepted on their first possession completes the pass tackle broken across Midfield Cole Wilson with his first reception of the afternoon transfer from Incarnate Word there's a lot of Incarnate Word transfers on this team because the old culture staff is now the new coach of Staff with the Bobcats Wilson had seven catches against Lamar last week is first here today hole up the middle for a nyd gain for is miti what you see is tempo from this Texas State offense they love to go fast primarily an 11 personnel one running back one tight end three wide receivers flying with Tempo they mark it as a seven yd pickup all day to throw McLoud has a wideopen receiver at the 30 Chris Dawn Jr picks up a first down for Texas state so what I'm seeing early right now is this offensive line at the Bob catch is humming and they're not allowing any type of pressure I told you early on Jordan McLoud if his feet are set in the pocket he will carve you up like a Ginsu knife after the 16 ydd pickup Texas State knocking on the door showing pressure UTSA they bring four picked up McLoud dumps it off to running back mty makes the man miss inside the 15 yd line and he High steps Out of Bounds at the 13 if this is your first time seeing ismile Marty you're in for a treat if he has space in the open field the first guy will not tackle him I'm guaranteeing you just a beautiful job of throwing a check down when you don't have deep receivers and why not throw that check down to the best most athletic ball carrier on the field torren Burgess Jr a junior running back into the game for the first time today he's wearing the number 22 today that's a switch for him this week they hand him the football Burgess tries to cut it outside maybe pick up of two yards as the excellent nose tackle Brandon brown with the first pressure there he's the two-lane transfer out of Katy Texas so his Road Runner defense if you're thinking right now we gave up some plays we've allowed the drive now if we can bow up here in the Red Zone we can get out of this thing without a whole lot of harm and force a field goal opportunity Cloud taking his time play Fox still has six seconds Burgess bounces it outside tripped up at the nyd line perhaps a touchdown saving Tackle by Ken Robinson so that's really good job of Vision by Burgess and I love the job by the Road Runner defense everybody's in their Gap it looked worse than it was but everybody showed up where they supposed to be almost broke the tackle but didn't now third and five can you get off the field defensively for the road run Runners do you bring pressure because we know four have not gotten there yet and if this guy again Stands Tall with nobody in his face look out McLoud plenty of time again on the slant incomplete trying to find Jaden Williams but he was covered like a blanket by Owen Peewee yeah that's a that's a coach of tape right there that's how you play Man coverage without fouling didn't Panic beautiful slant across the middle but even better job of covering up that slant now you know obviously you got a wide open receiver and hold your best most reliable receiver but listen he had a guy with a step in pee over the corner but just a beautiful job by Pete we of not given up on a play so a 26- yd field goal attempt for Mason Shipley the Oklahoma State transfer and First Team all Sun Bel conference kicker who was perfect last year we got flags down should be a false start I believe now you don't like kickers tyoka I don't but he was 15 for 15 last year I like that wait a minute I do like efficiency I just don't like how they stand on the sidelines and drink Gatorade on is that what it is yeah I've never gotten over that one well they uh really love this guy range well past 50 yards reliable from short and long first team All Conference he is once again on the L RZA award watch list just like Chase Allen both of our place kickers in this game I think tyoka back at Penn State on the defense have and still remain for down whoa so now that changes the equation it does now I guarantee that thinking and talking about should we go for it here you go from fourth and probably seven to now fourth and one and A2 if even that I think it's less than fourth in a yard wow and so the field goal unit heads back to the sideline the head coach GJ Kenny trying to quiet down this capacity crowd Dion henkins the utap transfer into the game number 33 well he's their big tough short yardage back wouldn't surprise me at all if they give it a chance to henkens to get again less than one yard like you said heavy personnel tight end in motion Titus Lions go up the middle and they get the first down it'll be first and goal for the Bob Cats that's trust in your offensive line dck when you feel like you can line up an 11 or 12 Personnel at least a 12 Personnel formation and run the ball right down the throat of the defense you feel really good about your offensive line well they had six offensive linemen so the numbers were in their favor and now this season Texas state is two out of three converting on fourth down down and so they stick with Dion henkins the 6 foot 228 lb red shirt senior running back from El Paso now looking at this spot I I don't think he made it you know initially up here I thought he got enough for put the line the game but uh and I still do but I agree it's it's a lot closer than I imagine wow he's short yeah how about that the UTSA defense bends but does not break by an inch or two with booze cascading down from the stands here at UFCU Stadium a defensive battle early in this I35 Showdown still scoreless in San Marcus at Papa John's we start with better like our fresh never frozen dough made from six simple ingredients and our dough can save you dough get two or more Papa parings favorites for just $6.99 each order now on the app from Papa John's Calm before the storm no thank you this is Jim's time to shine and Mike's and Jennifers helmets check drones check checking that on my shoulders and we were watching the fireworks show I would always see these dads with the kids on their shoulders and almost like a full circle moment now I'm getting to do this with my daughter and it was just really special to share that moment with her to see her face literally light up when there's a boom of the fireworks something I'll never forget to be a father that takes their kiss to Disney is so special to me Old Trapper beefs one upping I love Old Trapper I love how tender it is don't forget the wood smoke flavor Savory beef quality ingredients I'm their biggest fan old tra what's your beef sometimes Jonah wrestles with falling asleep so he takes zil the world's number one sleep a brand and wakes up feeling like himself get the rest to be your best with non-habit forming zql better didn't earn enough miles for my vacation are you crying no are you crying because of that other card no there's no crying in baseball or with the capital 1 Venture Card because it lets you earn unlimited double miles on every purchase every day and you can use those miles on any travel purchase and you know why there's no crying with the Venture Card what's in your wallet let's play ball to Charlotte for Collision yeah that's how I get which team walks away with the upper hand that's how I get by coming up tonight on ABC at 7:30 Eastern number 14 Tennessee takes on number 24 NC State in a big early season test for both non-conference Showdown SEC ACC of top 25 teams Wolfpack going to have to play better than week one when they overcame a scare against Western Carolina the volunteers looking to go to 2 and0 as well so with most of the football field staring at them from his own End Zone Owen maau has his pass dropped at the 28 yd line by Willie McCoy that would have been a huge pickup to get out of danger for the road runners yeah I love the call and i' love to throw even more maau was dead on with that back shoulder but the catch failed I mean that's that that should have been a first down easily that ball is exactly where it needs to be Willie McCoy's got to make that catch he was working on the Missouri transfer Chris Mills could have been a big play instead it's second down and 10 from their own four- yd line Robert Henry Jr with both tight ends in motion almost a guaranteed run in this situation first and down first and 10 incomplete pass you got to come back with a run and see if you can pick up five and make the third down manageable obviously Texas state knows that looks like he got a change call at the line of scrimmage this is the loud end of the field for a visiting team nowhere to go a loss on the play back to the two yd line as that defense for the Bobcats bowed up Jordan poke the star was the star that time well that's a great job by Dexter McCoy the defense of coordinator he understands football played in the league he knows when you get a first and 10 incomplete pass most coordinators are going to come back and try to be balanced with that run game call made have called a load up on that run now you got a chance to rush this pass this ball better come out fast Robert Henry the running back on third down and 12 again look at that line of scrimmage by Texas State there going to be lot of one-on ones if they all come and again the noise at this end of the football field at UFCU Stadium a problem for the visitors trying to communicate yeah this atmosphere is electric and that's what you want defensively it it's starting to be like a Title Wave it's going to be very interesting to see what this call is offensively I don't believe you want to go with just five a fivan protection situation cuz you're going to be looking at a safety to try to throw this football they better Max protect and give their Young quarterback time if they do throw it PR is End Zone maau gets drilled is it intercepted It Is by Chris Mills another big takeaway by this Texas State Defense you cannot overstate the value of rushing the passer any type of quarterback I don't care who it is one of the greatest or not he's going to be uncomfortable look at the beautiful inside move right there to get a hit on that quarterback and force an erron throw nobody wants to deal with that type of pressure let alone a Young quarterback khil Alexander creat top a one-onone pass rush yeah the red shirt Jor from Charlotte came steaming in to apply that pressure and force the interception but again Doug this is what coach mcco the the Deep coordinator for Texas St said that we we are we're a rush and cover defense the rush needs the cover and the cover needs the rush they play hand in hand and that was a great example but right there getting a hit on the quarterback forcing an interception and a great job of not dropping the layup making the catch so now tyoka each of our standout quarterbacks have been picked off today but on the stat sheet it's a little different than if you pull back the curtain a little bit because they didn't get help from their teammates and those turnovers were forced by the opponent yeah no question so it's going to be really interesting to see who settles down first and I say when I'm saying who settles down I'm talking about from that offensive line I'm talking about utsa's ability to give some time to their young quarterback and I'm also talking about Texas State's offensive line to rely on their running game it's clear that they've taken over the line of scrimmage can they keep that going no need to put the ball at risk if the running game is Unstoppable Jeff trailer letting the officials hear it you this is a 30 time out well these two campuses are only about 60 M apart their athletic departments have been longtime Rivals but since UTSA has only had a football program since 2011 it's still a young rivalry but make no mistake about it this is a heated rivalry that's only getting hotter here this afternoon one in four vehicles will need a new battery this year don't wait until yours dies to do something test your battery regularly and if you need a replacement Napa has you covered with a full range of long lasting high-performing batteries designed to keep you moving on a tense fansville by Dr Pepper holy smoke State one and the fans are going wild Deputy Ur quick call for Backup backup yes Deputy Quinn yours we don't need any backup I got this call backup I'm sorry did you say you wanted a Dr Pepper is a backup look we don't need any backup even if he has great hair and famous relatives I think we're talking about two different things here college football it's a pepper thing you know how minut it's a playoff without any backup I get it there are many ways to dress your McDonald's hot crispy fries but which is best is it with ketchup sweet and sour dare I say or natural life doesn't stop for a cold honey honey DayQuil severe honey powerful cold and flu symptom relief with a honeylicious taste DayQuil honey the honeylicious daytime coughing aching stuffy head fever power through your day medicine okay everybody got their dosei playbooks good there's only one play go for dose that means we get a chance to go big we take it let's roll some tape two seats in an okay position but the front row would be a huge score the Usher is playing lock down deep watch how they execute with the deis vent ER as lead blocker sneak scramble take it to the house Flawless that's how you help your family warm up to mornings with the protein to help fuel your day wake up to the goodness of Jimmy Dean ESPN college football is gred by McDonald's and G there's only one coach back in high school the one on the right Defender he was his the ball going to the ground therefore it is not an interception incomplete pass it'll be fourth and 13 at the one yd line the ball belongs to UTSA so there you go the explanation of what has transpired during the timeout the interception by Chris Mills which would have been his first is wiped out they say he did not secure this catch tyoka well I gave Chris all the credit by saying he didn't drop the the layup and looks like he did he missed the layup right I mean that's that's a tough tough catch had to come in and try to scoop it off the turf but bullsh I think the message still has been sent by this Texas State defensive line they are humming right now they can be very intimidating especially for a Young quarterback now the pressure is on Kale Hogan the Junior putter from Australia whose heels are on the back end line Cole Wilson stands at the 45 yd line the punt is away Wilson has to back up and what a punt it was with a wind at his back Wilson able to get back to the 45 yd line Elliott Davidson in coverage with the tackle well as we've talked about these two schools are not that far apart and these two coaches are very very close there was a wonderful story written this week in espn.com by Dave Wilson wrote about the background of their relationship and how they've bonded over food tyoka certainly something that you can relate to oh yeah that excites me you know that and you know we heard from both coaches about their relationship obviously their sub coast and I asked you know GJ Kenny did you hear from the opposing coach your dad-like figure and Jeff trer he said yeah I heard from him heard from him earlier today that was yesterday and he said it was about Water Burger you getting a triple water bger today McLoud gets rid of the football with blockers making a man miss what a run after the catch for a gain of seven yards by christon Jr well that's just effectively an outside run and when you run those tunnel screens you're looking for blocking not only from your offensive line but from these receivers and they take great pride in being physical on the outside and blocking for each other Dawn picks up seven keep it on the ground for another first down move the chains on the Run by is MTI the Jr from Murphy Texas who began his college career at Houston Christian he might have an NFL future time yeah he's got great quickness and vision he runs harder than his frame says he's a third down back in the NFL in my my opinion there he is making the first man miss able to turn positive yardage out of what might have been a loss on the play tyan Milton finally tracked him down and pushed him out of bounds and say what's interesting we talked to the staff about the type of player ism is and they said look we want to get him up to about 20 carries that's about right for him we got we like all of our backs they got about four backs they play them all but to keep him as effective as he can possibly be they want to keep that number 20 or less and he can really do his thing Joey hobbert on Kobe Wilson the three receivers to the bottom of your screen McLoud keeps the play alive and now gets tripped up from behind taken down by James Wally Jr the red shirt freshman from Missouri Texas with the sack well that's good for him a good for wle because initially the rush wasn't there his a first move didn't get him there but you got to be tenacious and it looks like Texas State hold defense we're going to have a flag for defensive holding I believe yeah automatic first down for Texas State our our referee Steven Robinson devastating penalty and this is two times in a row now defensively they shot themselves in the foot with penalties getting close to the end zone that that sack was important because it was going to get this team off schedule well that's a tough penalty right there hard to believe we're got to move the chains guys got to get the chains moved hard to believe we're only about halfway through the first quarter lot and I know it's still scoreless but we have had a ton of action already yeah a lot of stoppage in play as well with reviews with the chains now in place first and 10 Jordan mlau the red shirt senior a plant High School in Tampa Florida calls his own number breaks outside and he will score a 17 yd touchdown run to get the Bobcats on the board first it was the eye candy duck the Eye Candy of the Jet Sweep look fooled the entire defense just enough great block to Spring him I missed the number but we we just saw a pancake block by an offensive lineman that sprung the quarterback and Dorian strain I'm looking at you and saying kudos to you sir cuz you made that touchdown happen four plays 44 yards it took less than two minutes to put that touchdown on the board to bring Mason Shipley back on of the field shiffley splits the uprights to make it seven nothing sometimes you got to trick him Doug and that's a great job of ball handling and look at the outstanding block and I guarantee you one thing Jordan McLoud knows exactly what to do when he gets into clear you've got a pep dild predicament Ace you overdid it on the loaded eyes and now your gut is in the gutter undo it with Pepto fast melts so you can keep on rolling when you overo it Sunday NFL Countdown 10: a.m. eastern 7:00 a.m. Pacific on ESPN and the app and then we can't wait for the 55th season of Monday Night Football to kick off next week with Aaron Rogers making his highly anticipated comeback from last year's Tor Achilles leading the Jets against Christian mcaffry in the 49ers 8 Eastern five Pacific on ESPN ABC ESPN Deportes and ESPN plus with pton and Eli back on ESPN 2 and ESPN plus as well with 12year NFL veteran tyoka Jackson I'm Doug Sherman back in San Marcus Texas as the home team in this I35 Showdown has taken the lead and is kicking off into the wind on a breezy afternoon and in spite of that wind it is a Touchback connections for Texas State they've got four of their Bobcats whose fathers played in the NFL yeah and a couple of them I played against and and played with most notably Josh macau's dad or Josh Macau is the dad of Owen Macau but I play with Josh in Detroit um also who else Ray Ray obviously is still in the league right now now with the fal Billy Joe the former quarterback I think I played against him Roy Williams was my teammate in Detroit so man this is a lot of fun to watch and I feel all by the way Doug you are will Henderson the third on the receiving end another short pass from Owen maau so I I like the job there getting the ball out of young O's hands that's what that's what Owens dad calls him own so nice job of getting the ball out of his hands as you see defensive coordinator dexon McCoy who I think is doing an out outstanding job one of those again another one of those guys under 40 years old young but with experience and a lot of energy maau wide open tight end he's in the clear Houston Thomas a huge gain and a flag comes down at the end of the play Darius Jackson at 62 195 was trying to hang on for dear life against Thomas who is 6525 looked like baby grank right there my goodness you see that stiff arm pining the flag but that's a huge play but again look at the ball come out quick that's what has to happen Justin Burke the offensive coordinator done a great job of adjusting on the Fly getting that ball out of M's hands personal foul face mask offense number 88 15 from the in line remain first down that was Thomas right yeah yeah so that that stiff arm and I love to call honestly because they don't call it enough there it is right there that's a stiff arm into the face mask now look I that wasn't the most egregious I've ever seen but he did gain an advantage with that hands up in the face and it could be very dangerous obviously with the eyes watch the stiff arm very good of pushing it out there but got to get off that face mask still it's the first first down for this UTSA offense that again needs to establish the Run Taven Coleman on the stop of korian Barnes but you know last week in spite of the win there were issues for the road runners acknowledged by Jeff trailer they averaged only 2.2 yards per carry against Kennesaw and this is behind a veteran experienced offensive line and with their inability to be efficient in a run game it hurt their pass game because then Kenesaw was able to tee off and maau took some hits in that game last week Macau rolling left fires on the run it's a first down second first down of the drive and the road runners are Marching thanks to Devin mcan's catch with Ryan Nolan in coverage if they can keep him upright I'm telling you macau's got the goods as you look at the the routes outside great bench rout on the outside I like to see him come out of that break a little stronger a little harder but the throw threw him really open great job of maau getting on the outside making an accurate pass and run and back at the line of scrimmage Taven Coleman is yet to get up the senior from Umble Texas a Utah State transfer seconde Bobcats starter who is one of the disruptive members of that front line he had three and a half sacks a year ago but uh he is being treated certainly hoping he gets up and leaves under his own power 61300 lb but that's the bad news the good news is that they have a lot of guys they've got a lot of dudes that they can play and they have no problem going two and three deep especially in this front seven they got a lot of confidence in their depth and looks like Tavon is walking off real strong I like it yeah normally we say it's a two deep depth chart for Texas State it's four deep across the front yeah and then they take great pride in it and look they did a great job of hitting a portal I mean these guys last year it started last year they were sort of they did the Colorado deal and they were better at Colorado uh doing Colorado's deal than Colorado was bringing all of these these transfers and it got them to a bowl game they did it again this year a lot of talented players there's one thing to get guys but they went and got guys who can help contribute and also are good guys in the locker room pass complete to the tight end Patrick overmire a see langy has comeing to replace at the nose tackle position Taven Coleman who went out in the last play we talked about the tth the depth of Texas State well guess what these road runners have a bunch of tight ends and they use them all set up the screen and it looks like they're going to have another first down move the chains one more time on the reception by Devin mckuin so they went Tempo and got the ball outside really quickly again that's like an outside Run play when you're having trouble running the football in a traditional way between the tackles you do anything you can to manufacture easy run and in this case it's an easy throw and run for first down UTSA still without one of its top receivers JT Clark who had to have a second knee surgery they are still hopeful he can come back this season Barnes Falls forward to the 11 yd line good run until Aussie langy brought him down and there is a uh bobcat in the end zone slow to get up Josh eat the Oklahoma transfer officially that's their St starting Corner Eaton and again just as we mentioned before they got a lot of corners and this looks to me all right doctor yeah be careful now Dr Jackson be careful well of course on a hot day not sure if we've gotten up into the '90s I think we we were supposed to but it's a hot warm day even though we've got the breeze so every time someone goes down you hope for the best and hope it is cramping but we certainly don't know what's going on down there that's right but we have had multiple players go down with this capacity crowd on hand 86 degrees here in San Marcus feels like 90 and now he is up and walking off under his own power thankfully I don't know if that well I'll say this when I lift my leg like that on the field for me it was always cramping but as he as he walks he's getting a little bit easier a little less gingerly I'm guessing when you were a Buccaneer in Tampa Bay that must have happened to timer too well look the the thin guys the guys with low body fat they cramp easily a guy like me didn't cramp very much all right but but every now and then so trees Moore the UTEP transfer comes in to replace Josh Eaton big stick that's one of the bruising running backs in this stable of three guys for the road runners korian Barnes and he was chopped down and that'll ring up third down well I I give credit to this offense and Justin Burke the coordinator sticking with this run you got to continue to call it you got to let the defense know we're not afraid to run the football and that will pay dividends with play action pass down the road but here now on a big third down in short it's going to be interesting to see if they put the ball in their young quarterback's hand and let him make the decision now Barnes likes to run between the tackles going to take another shot just lowers his shoulder and picks up the first down inside the 5 yard line it's first down and goal it's very encouraging very encouraging for this offensive line they're starting to get heat up as well we talk about quarterbacks getting in a rhythm and running backs and receivers well offensive lineman they get in Rhythm too especially when you call run plays they begin to feel good about themselves great job of blocking and finding it by Barnes now Robert Henry comes in at running back the senior from Lumberton Mississippi last year scored 11 touchdowns still on his feet maau try to make something happen and he gets leveled at the three yd line by Ryan Nolan another big play for the sophomore from Gainesville Florida yeah excuse me Doug I couldn't tell if that was a broken play or just a lot of penetration up inside but it whatever it turned out to be when it got outside he was in no man's land and he took a hit and and honestly I'm surprised that taking a look at for targeting cuz we saw some helmet to helmet he is a a runner though maau to the end zone had a man with a step trying to find mchan but he overthrew him and so McAn will stay on the sideline with third down and goal upcoming so huge play you got to be able to win the moments this is when one of these situations if you're UTSA where you got to win the moment on the road in a big game what do you dial up how much do you trust your Young quarterback do you turn back to this new found running game flag before the snap all start offense number 53 five penalty from the commodity that is an atmosphere in front of your home crowd making it tough one the visiting team there is no price you won't pay for it third and goal but backed up five yards empty back field for Owen maau whenever they've gone empty the ball has to come out quick cuz the rush is coming he gets rid of it throws a strike but it's incomplete the defensive back recovered nicely and looked like he got a hand in there to poke it away incomplete James Neil in coverage the Mike linebacker staying with a tight end Patrick overmire oh that that coverage was beautiful I mean you had a oneone little seam route balls where it needs to be but the coverage was tremendous and sometimes your position Doug forces a perfect throw that's sometimes all you can ask for Force the quarterback to be perfect forc the receiver to be perfect and that just didn't happen right there and a Chase Allen his coach is confident he can work through some struggles he has had this a good opportunity from the right half and it is good a 26 yd field goal a 13pl drive comes up with three points great job by Allen I mean I look you got to give him credit he he was down last week but this week pretty good as you take a look at some of the highlights and there's the Miss Q right there off the fingers butter hands you got to squeeze that football when the ball where it need to be and just a lot of things happening that were kind of weird a little bit of this and a little bit of that some missed opportunities from both teams but at the end of the day it was the Run game the quarterback run game for Texas state that settled them down and got them their first score all right so tyok I ask you this this is a showdown an I35 showdown between Regional Rivals but it is it really a rivalry until one of the teams beats the other because state is 0 for five against UTSA yeah I think it still is a rivalry because recruiting I mean these guys are usually in a fight for the same guys around the state of Texas but also in the portal so yeah it's a rivalry to me and you can best believe that the community believes is a robry as well Kate sandal kicks Cole Wilson will watch it sail all the way out of the end zone boy that was a smus BG in that first quarter right sure was a little bit of everything some mistakes miscues some big time plays offensively defensively a little bit of everything we shouldn't say past 10 still got a minute 43 to go here in the first some of the games coming up tonight on ESPNU all corn state in Nashville to take on vanderville we've already talked about the volunteers in the wolf pack a big SEC ACC game in the Arizona State a member of the Big 12 Conference now taking on Mississippi State how would you do tyok if I quized you with no notes on wh every school is with the latest realignment do I get the phone a friend yeah okay I might do pretty decent I mean my good Arizona State in a big 12 your nitty lions are now League Rivals with Oregon how about that McLoud completes the pass Joey hobbert first time we've called his name young man who started his career at wazu spent a couple of years in the Pack 12 Conference he was born in Indianapolis while his father Billy Joe was playing for the Colts offensive coordinator Mark left with says he has the best hands I have ever seen wow on second down McLoud throws it high sails his intended receiver Chris Dawn that'll bring up third down big play here now for UTSA if this road runner defense can get off the field put their offense back on the field you begin to sort of tap into those reserves for Texas State defensively and run the plays up so it's little opportunities like this don't let them get any yards get a decent Punt and get your offense back on the field with some momentum three receivers to the bottom of your screen including the running back is MTI nearest to the sideline pass for R Us has been non-existent let's see if they can Dow something up on this play McLoud looked left now throws right near the sticks and that's going to be enough for a first down yards after catch Joey hobbert able to move the sticks before brevan Randall brought him down love the Hustle by Randall but what you're seeing is defensively a story of two different defenses UTSA is unable to get a pass for us without bringing people that leaves one-on-one on the outside F the hand off to MTI inaccurate pass one more time trying to find hobbert who at 5'11 went up but couldn't come down with it that's supposed to be the hands guy but but again a little quick with that pass but back to the point got about the pass rush when you can Rush four in play coverage man it does world for your defense as a whole confidence-wise puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback when you got to bring people it makes it easy for the quarterback to read out and get the ball to the open man keep in mind accuracy not a problem last year when this young man was the sun Bel conference player of the year he hooks up here for a big pickup Chris Dawn Jr inside the 10 tripped up at the one yard line by Ken Robinson a 60yd catch and run and once again Texas State knocking on the door so Dawn gets the headlines but it's the outstanding blocking as you see him reach for that touchdown now I think they should take a look at that now this is close enough let's see I he's ruled out you see Texas state is taking their time I I think this certainly deserves a look why not but man the blocking on the outside the perimeter blocking by the offensive line was terrific to Spring Dawn up the sidelines and now perhaps they will take a look tyoka did Chris joh Dawn Jr the sophomore from Dallas out of mosquit Horn high school did he make it all the way to the end zone show me some Wheels right there now they've got big playability Joey hobbert had a couple of long touchdown catches last uh last week against Lamar we see the big play possibility there Dawn on the so the call on the field was that he stepped out what that means is the official needs to see undisputable Visual Evidence that the call on the field is incorrect that's the only way this thing gets overturned so far the angle I saw made it look quick questionable that's why I want to see it again but can we see a definitive step out that's the question and I don't believe we're going to get it from this angle his his right knee I think was down right there before the football got near the pylon that's a good point I was looking at toes and if that knee hits obviously this is college football is down right there the official is all over it he's right in terrific plays give him credit for hustling to be where he needs to be this angle won't tell a story yeah I saw that that right knee looked like it may have been down as well I just don't think there's enough here say that the call field was incorrect the field stands that the runner was down at the two yd line first and goal and you notice he use the the term it stands instead of confirmed right they couldn't confirm it one way the other but what they could see was there was nothing there enough to overturn it and so the call in the field stands and so the 60yd pass play to Chris Dawn has Jordan McLoud and the offense at the second yard line or two yd line on first and goal against six offensive linemen with a heavy set and the big back Deion henkins back on the field oh this is Texas States this is what they do this is their brand they want to bloody your nose at the line of scrimmage quarterback keeps and walks into the end zone a two-y touchdown by McLoud he went in untouched so like the first touchdown there was I candy with the Jet Sweep this time it's I candy with the option look but at the end of the day these are offensive linemen in the three-point stance and mashing the defensive lineman so it doesn't really matter what you run if you got a lock and strangle hold on a line of scrimmage it'll all work now the junior Place kicker from Liberty Hill Texas Mason Shipley boots it through 143 Texas State and we still have time on the clock here in the first quarter I just want you to watch the line of scrimmage just get moved forward and that that is just a beautiful job of collapsing an entire side of a defensive line and so I mean maybe Doug Sherman could have ran for that touchdown I mean maybe cuz I I've seen your Achilles it's very tight Achilles on both feet but maybe you could have got in there maybe I'm not as quick as Jordan McLoud a true dual threat quarterback who last year at James Madison when he was conference player of the year had eight rushing touchdowns to go along with the 35 throwing touchdowns again only 10 interceptions I mean that that's pretty good so the guy can get it done as to your point through the air and on the ground and he's shown down for two touchdowns in this game so he hit the transfer portal and did what was once Unthinkable transferred within conference it still is very odd that the conference Player of the Year wouldn't stay in place or go to another conference but when Kurt Signet left JMU for Indiana he wound up going into the portal and leaving for Texas state for his final year of college eligibility and I'll tell you what folks here in San Marcus are thrilled to have him well he lost one great quarterback and he get to replace him with another and I I think it speaks to GJ Kenny and his culture just think about is the head coach offensive coordinator Mark Leftwich and then defensive coordinator also indexa McCoy They're all under the age of 40 they speak the language of these young people Willie McCoy watches the ball sail over his head and out of the end zone for a Touchback well one of the questions coming into this game can the UTSA offense catch up with its defense and special teams that's been the trend here in the early going this season and so far the answer is it's not really I mean defensively they've had some issues stopping the run so you would hope you travel with the defense being at its best so they haven't helped their offense out a lot what I've noticed that the offensive line when they give this quarterback time this Young quarterback in Owen Macau time he can find people it's just been an inconsistent pass blocking situation the running game is starting to to show up can they establish a run game and play action pass maau tries to set up the screen but very well defended incomplete as the pass was thrown into the ground Tav and Coleman with the pressure well Coleman got the pressure But Ken Hayes no no grounding but Kenan Hayes really hugged up his man and didn't allow maau to throw it to the outlet they were setting up a nice screen and they had room to run but number 14 Hayes was Johnny on the spot cardinus in motion they throw the other away big stick at the 28 yd line to drive the receiver mchan back forward progress will get him out to near the 29 yd line but that was Bobby Crosby the senior from Fort Lauderdale coming in hot yeah hot is Right Z Zone coverage so the balls being thrown in front of you you put your foot in the ground and you drive on the ball again the four down pass rush is really controlling this football game and making it easy for the Texas State Defense the first quarter was in the book time out Texas state in this rivalry game Tred to beat its rival from San Antonio for the first time in program history off to a good start here today in San Marcus this $6 meal deal is here it starts with Duncan's legendary coffee a toasty melty bacon egg I35 in Austin thrilled about how the Longhorns went to the big house and pushed around the reigning National Champs today and for our audience here you've got to keep track of the other group of five teams boisey state is at the top of the Heap for now but once again as we talked off the top tie both of these teams have very realistic chances if they run the table to make it into the expanded college football playoff this year yeah Jeff trailer said listen every game matters especially for us the group of five we can't afford to lose any of these games because it's really going to be one slot for the entire group of five so games like this they're playoff games that we talked about before and speaking of some playoff game Boise State obviously taking care of business but how about the statement game from the Longhorns going in the big house man they mashed them on fourth down the punt is away it's a short one and will fall at the 49 and take a Road Runner's bounce so once again the group of five has a whole different Outlook coming into the college football season the American the Sun Belt Conference the Mountain West Conference USA the Mid-American Conference those are the odds coming into the year at which League out of the group of five would have a chance to get into the college football playoff yeah I think that's about right 39 and 38% I I think the American and Sunbelt are pretty much even I me in terms of the talent and quality of play I've seen those conferences a lot over the last few years and and they've got some terrific players a lot of players come out of those schools going into the National Football League this is going to be a lot of fun to see how this thing shakes out as we move through the fall torren Burgess back in at running back Conor Fox the motion man stays in Block McLoud who has been responsible for so much of this offense with the short pick up to Burgess little over 170 yards of offense for Texas state so far McLoud responsible for all but 22 of that 130 yds passing 19 yds rushing his two touchdown runs today matches an individual single game career-high scored a couple of touchdowns in a game last year for JMU Crossing pattern dropped put right on the money but Jaylen Griffin the red shirt senior from Huntsville Texas could not hang on this is the second one right in the hands that we've seen today I mean that ball could not have been any better if McLoud walked down the line of scrimmage down the field and handed it to him you got to make the play mty goes in motion second team All-American a year ago an allpurpose player Dynamic out of the back field and on special teams he is split wide to the top of your screen on on third down mlau going to tuck it and run he's got a first down and more slides safely to the 47 yd line move the chains Jamal Lian there on the slide and Lian is a name the terrific Jack we've not called yet today and he's a tackling machine but so far not today but what I'm impressed with is Jordan mccloud's decision making not the biggest strongest and fastest no no 6' 205 but his decision making is Elite and with he saw there was coverage downfield he felt the pressure he doesn't look at the pressure he felt it found a void in the line and took off tucked the ball away got a first down they marked it at the 49 yd line 11 personnel out there for the Bobcats again plenty of time from M Cloud who put some air underneath it had a in but just overshot his intended receiver is another opportunity as you mentioned they Bliss the play before they got picked up they haven't been getting any kind of pass rush from just a fourman what do you come up with if you're def defensive coordinator Jess lip well you've got your second string defensive line Ronald triplet chadera o22 Christian Clayton trying to provide that pressure nobody gets there and the pass is complete again another Bobcats first down and more Chris Dawn Jr with another touchdown for Texas State a 46 yd strike and the Bobcats are in complete control again the decision making they brought pressure from the outside but they just couldn't get there because Jordan McLoud sees it and gets rid of the football on time and on target six plays 61 yds just over 2 minutes for a 20-3 Texas State leag the favorites in the Sun Belt West Division try to make a huge statement in this non-conference showdown out of the hold of David NES Mason Shipley lines up for the point after 213 Bobcats with the lead Jordan McLoud once again finding the right man and his receiver making a big play Chris Dawn Jr all the way down the sideline for a huge Texas State league did you know Nationwide is so much more than a great insurance company they're one of America's largest financial services companies too just like I'm so much Doug Sherman on a beautiful afternoon for football here deep in the Heart of Texas we are in San Marcus at a sold out UFCU stadium for this rivalry game these two schools are about an hour apart and at this rate the trip back down 35 South to San Antonio will not be that much fun for the road runners time now for the All State player check in and no surprise where we're going with this Allstate player check in tyoga well he's not th known as a as a dual threat guy but his decision making allows him to get where he needs to be just enough quickness and athleticism but the blocking has also been stellar the passing has been pinpoint but again the decision making very decisive that is his superpower they talked about it the coaching staff said when he's decisive he's excellent when you make him think pause and Pat the ball that's when he's no longer Superman but he's showing today why poy is on his resume and if he keeps playing like this he'll be the play of the Year again on first down positive yardage for UTSA gain of nine going right up the middle for Robert Henry Jr just going back to McLoud for a minute you know if your younger brother plays linebacker at Clemson as his does Kobe McLoud and your older brother Ray Ray was a wide receiver at Clemson and plays in the NFL chances are you've got enough athletic ability to get out there and play quarterback Henry stuffed that time by Max Harris well Max Harris a great job of running your feet on that tackle that's how you do it but yeah ml's got the blood lines as we talked about a lot of players in this game today have the blood lines but it's one thing to have people in your family getting it done it's another thing to do it yourself lot of really friendly competition and I love it Henry can't catch the screen was it a forward pass he picks it up to make sure and with no whistle the play continues make that korian Barnes smart by Barnes go ahead and get on it no matter what the officials will sort it out but you just keep playing football and as you said play to the whistle that's football ball one1 nice job I have no idea if that was a lateral or not but you pick it up and play and let the official sort it out horns met at the 35 yd line by Dominique Ratcliff the red shirt Jr from Conroe Texas who spent a couple of years as a rage and cinjun at Louisiana now a third-year bobcat excellent at stopping the run last year and again this year 63 295 lbs and he is a load inside and this is where you don't want to be if you're on maau Third and long against this pass rush and they'll talk about it come out Texas State this is their second timeout the defense uses a timeout 30 seconds on third down well what they've been doing on defense on third down has worked UTSA tie just one of five here ever bowl game won their first ever bowl game and looking to beat their Rivals from San Antonio for the first time ever here today changed the culture immediately in one year went from multiple losing Seasons to winning a bowl game wow third down pass a little too tall for Patrick over me who took a lick and couldn't hang on to the football are you going to take the hit Patrick either way see might as well catch it surprised they didn't take a look maybe for targeting trayon Payne was the defender just a slant over the middle wide open and I think he took his eyes off the ball Doug frankly to look for the defender you can't do that you have got to stare at that football squeeze it and take the hit yeah that's one of at least 532 reasons why I never played college football they'd have called me Gator don't send me over the middle a gator the punt drives the Return Man all the way back Cole Wilson though able to make a little bit of positive yardage before being tracked down by marcelus Wilkerson one of the money backers playing on special team coverage here today thought we might see a horse caller there but I guess it wasn't enough to bring the flag that can be a very dangerous play for the return man but no harm no F and I think I was being kind to myself saying only 532 reasons why I never would have played college football well I started to triple it but I'm like you know what let me be nice to my partner he's being nice toight so far so far the day is still young is Jordan McLoud and this potent Bobcats offense back out of the football field from their own 22 yd line mty vacates the Back Field McLoud on the slant able to find Jaden Williams he falls forward to the 36 yd line with Jamal Lian and Cyrus dumah in Pursuit so that was a pass all the way but interesting enough you saw the offensive line cut the D line that gets their hands down so that your sixo quarterback can throw the ball over the top to the 5' 11 receiver from lugerville Texas former Boston College Eagle now they go the other way and it's another first down for Texas State this time it's Joey hobber out of San Juan Hills High School in San Clemente California very tough player first of all I love his hands give me a receiver that's going to catch everything thrown to him and then second of all he just enough wiggle understands how to play the game has great body control not afraid to go over middle he's a guy that's a slot guy would be shocked if he makes it as a free agent typee in the NFL that was a 16 yd pickup the seventh play of 15 or more yards today nearly another one right there pass a little too far out in front for Cole Wilson that'll bring up second down and 10 if you're UTSA again you got to get an opportunity to get to Third and long it's been too many third and short for this Texas State offense they are 60% on third down that's not going to cut it tell you what Texas state is doing much better so far today than they did w week one no penalties mhm mty had nowhere to go Ken Robinson who was the week one tackle leader against Kennesaw State with another tackle here today well Robinson said you know what I can make the one-on-one tackle in open field that's a great job that's a great job of not standing where you don't want to dance with a dancer as a defensive player you got to come up be aggressive make your play know your leverage so if you do miss the guy you turn him back to his other guys now here's your opportunity if you're the Road Runner defense you have got to find a way to get off the field as I said Texas state is 60% on third down you can't win like that you need to set up your offense Now by getting this ball back let's see what the OC ma left witch dials up here m out runs through an arm tackle gets back to the line of scrimmage and picks up some positive yardage but it's big defensive play by jamori Robinson the will linebacker finally you got some pressure that's what pressure does for you we have two players slow to get up one for each side I I mentioned they had 16 penalties week one zero so far what is that conversation like when you have such a breakdown from week to week between the coaching staff and the players that following week well it's contentious yeah and it's a lot of yelling and uh and I'm sure you there was some all first of all all penalties aren't the same right there are effort penalties and then there are penalties that are bonehead penalties whether that's pre- snap penalties or you lose your Poise penalties they had too many lose your Poise penalties dead ball penalties those are the ones that you you get yelled at for no coach worth his salt is going to be angry at an effort penalty you know you're trying to make something happen and you accidentally get the face mask or you as to accidentally hit the guy a little higher than you should that sort of thing too many penalties that are preventable and correctable but it looks like so far they've got them corrected good to see Martavius French the Tennessee transfer get to the sideline he's the middle linebacker for UTSA Dorian stra was up first the left guard who was down for Texas state so if you had one of those bonehead ones what do Joe paternal say to you on the sideline oh my gosh first of all you're going to run every morning for the next two weeks at 6:00 a.m. regardless whether you have class or not then you're going to go to your lifting and all the other assignments but yeah we're talking old school as it gets you're going to run and that pain will remind you never to do it again little nowadays though you you run kids a little too much now they run to the portal Chris Carpenter with a flag down at the line of scrimmage punt returner lets it Go and the coverage team got to it at the one yd line wow pending the penalty that I mean that is tremendous punt coverage great job of Kicking It Up High so your guy can get underneath but judging from the way the punt team is walking backwards we might be looking at a re kick illegal formation offense five more in the back Field Five y penalty reick in spite of that I still can't help but immediately think something you've talked about with us for years in terms of an Avenue into the NFL that punt coverage by Joey hober he's a wide receiver y if he wants to find his way onto a roster in a couple of years that's a good way to get there it's an old saying in the NFL the more you can do the more you can do the more valuable you are most of the players on this field and in the group of five they play they their way into the league by playing special teams they'll get to playing their position eventually and that will allow you to hang in the league and show guys you can actually play receiver or running back or whatever it is but a special teams will you make your mark early so now David Nunes and his punt coverage team trying to do it again but this one much shorter and the fair catch is made at the 15 yd line so that is a net positive of 14 yards for UTSA with this offense coming back out of the field down by 18 points here are the featured college football games on ESPN plus tonight ninth ranked Missouri host Buffalo Florida host sford at 7 Eastern 6 Central and number 18 LSU host Nickles at 7:30 to get ESPN plus go to ESPN plus.com or download the ESPN app with tyoka Jackson I'm Doug Sherman here at UFCU Stadium in San Marcus Texas in a game that has been all Bobcat so far and I'd like to see Justin Burke go back to those tight ends he's had some success with their tight end passing game over the middle and through the seams get something positive on first down so you can set up this offense to continue to move the ball good to see will Henderson the promising true freshman back out of the field flag comes at the end of the play on an end round that wasn't going anywhere this Texas State Defense is fast it's hard to go Coast to Coast all the way around the corner and turn it against the speed of this defense Ryan Nolan with the tackle there as the referee St Robinson so they picked the flag up no foul so right now UTSA is 20% on third down and why is it so bad because they haven't been efficient on first down they're staying behind the change in the early down and trying to get it third and long on third down and that's the toughest possible way to try to keep the football move and this is an experienced o line over 120 combined career career starts among the most in FBS and yet still they've not been able to control the line of scrimmage really either of their first two weeks little trickeration with another flag behind the play and a big hit at the 14 yard line Dante Thompson the red shirt Jr from Pensacola Florida now that's how you tackle if you weren't awake before you're awake now that's running and hitting but again we talked about the speed of this defense UTSA continues to try to test the edges they found something with the running game late in the first quarter Doug they should try to continue to try to run that football and then the play action pass to the tight ends I think that might be the formula to begin to get around ring offense number 53 that P by third down so these long plays coming all the way across the line of scrimmage it forces the offensive line to play longer against Athletic guys see they're trying to get off the block they're trying to run to the football it forces your big guys to try to have to run with them and in inevitably you're going to get a couple holding penalties maau still looking downfield draws the defense and throws a strike out to the 35 yd line DJ Allen found himself some open space and the red shirt sophomore from Gladewater Texas in the pass from maau well you asked me earlier to compare o to his daddy and I said he's not quite as good an athlete as Daddy I might be wrong I mean he looked like his father Josh right there great job of getting out of the pocket Escaping The Rush and throwing an accurate ball on the Move that's a tremendous job of feeling it getting outside and delivering a catchable ball across his body that is beautiful stuff somewhere right now Josh is saying yeah that's my boy they are working on Jolan Landry a red Shar freshman defensive end out of CE King High School in Houston yeah Owen Macau 61190 I did ask you before the game what similarities do you see with his dad who was a longtime NFL quarterback and he's not as big as his dad yeah not as big in his fast his dad is a tremendous athlete uh but for him he's great from the pocket I think he's a little ahead of his dad as a passer and and the to run through his reads I'm not sure that Dad was this proficient at it as you see the two on the screen but what an unbelievable relationship to be able to share the love of this game and I talked to his dad about it and he said listen what I'm most proud about about my son is his toughness and that's what his dad was his his dad was tough as now you got to be tough to play the quarterback position first and foremost his son Owen Macau red shirt sophomore fakes the handoff his pass just a bit behind the tight end Houston Thomas who who appeared to be coming open but defensively Darius Jackson the former Missouri Tiger with the pbu well that's the play action pass trying to hit the tight end over the middle that I was talking about earlier but obviously Darius Jackson was thinking the exact same thing that's how you play a trail coverage and make a play on the ball without getting a pi keep it on the ground on second down and that Texas State Defense does not allow for any room to run so this has been the the recipe for disaster in this first half for this UTSA offense inefficient on first and second down setting up third and long dealing with this pass rush and this pass rush is exceptional they're going to have to block him up give that quarterback a chance maau trying to find mchan couldn't do it pass was behind him and another failed attempt on Third and long for the road runners it was there not sure if the route was run properly or if it was just an errand throw but yeah mchan had what he wanted across the middle he was a really good job of running a post route that ball was behind him I'm going to have to believe that it was just an inaccurate throw and a missed opportunity and Cole Wilson the dangerous Return Man from Katy Texas transfer from Incarnate Word down in San Antonio won't get an opportunity a bad punt that he Fair catches at the 39 yd line great field position for the bcats offense to take over one more time 644 remaining in the first half here in San Marcus hi can I really do this it's what everyone asks at every new stage of life we say yes Sandy Spring Bank isn't just you stand for it's so on welome welcome Big Time Players Big Time plays and Big Time personalities Sunday Night Baseball Sundays at 7 on ESPN the new 12 team college football playoff begins December 20th on D just back in San Marcus first play of the drive for Texas state is an incomplete pass tying Milton with the deflection as he broke up the pass one of the few things not going right for Jordan McLoud who is now 12 of 20 passing today for 209 yards he's also the leading rusher so far for the Bobcats four carries 31 yards couple of touchdowns and Chris dawn has been his big play receiver today keep your eyes on number one they run it this time through a huge hole to the 45 yd line before Ken Robinson made the tackle Osiris Simon Dorian strong making a big block up front it's the eighth play of 15 or more yards from scrimmage for Texas state today yeah they used the pin and pull scheme on that one they just blocked down on the strong side of the formation pulled the backside guard and tackle and opened up a huge hold and you saw a burst from Burgess there now well he played the last two years for the UTEP miners but now under the guidance of his offensive coordinator ma Leftwich who himself played at UTEP Leftwich was a quarterback where he coached three All-American quarterbacks during his five years down in San ant anonio at UIW and so he has helped to bring some of that offensive potency along with Coach Kenny here to San Marcus and right now he's having a field day with his call sheet because his offensive line is humming you and I talked about this whatever offensive line was going to control the line of scrimmage that was going to go a long way to deciding this game and obviously we got a lot of football left to play but Texas state has been the most consistent of the two they've done a great job in pass Pro and they opened up some huge holes in this run game and when you have it like that it becomes like Burger King on that call sheet you have it your way coach whatever you want it's there for you I see you working food back into the broadcast man I want a burger right now I'm just you know I'm just saying another former Incarnate Word Cardinal Elliot Davidson was the injured player replaced Now by Jirus Lewis McLoud turns tail fires and finds his running back mty and he's got open room to run inside the 20 down inside the 10 another huge chunk play until Ken Robinson tracks him down okay M left witch now you in your bag now again whenever an offensive line is dominating you can do what you want how about a roll away throwback and again watch big guys blocking downfield and another explosive player the most explosive all of them a he knows exactly what to do when he gets a crack 37y pickup great blocking by the center Chase Todd maybe the best offens defensive line this year in the sun Bel conference this team averaged nearly 37 points per game a year ago among the best in FBS to the end zone contact and the flag will come tyan Milton was in coverage but the Junior from lawrencville Georgia making contact early with Jaden Williams yeah that's unfortunate because he was in great position and I'm not in total love with this call I mean this is Defense number 15 In The End Zone about be placed at the 2 yd line first and goal I mean to me if you if you look at it the offensive player reaches out and makes contact before the defender does I mean that's just two athletes going for and playing hard to make a play I I just don't know how you can penalize the defense like that in that situation the offense initiated the contact just play on so again the heavy package out there inside the 5yd line six offens lineman and Dion henin stands alongside Jordan McLoud the quarterback no trickery there in the front line for the road runners led by the Jack linebacker Jamal Lian was ready for that play yeah Lian only a few tackles away from moving in second all time in in program history but this is the type of response you need from the Road Runner defense you got to say enough is enough you've got to figure out who wants to fight on this defense and start making plays and starting to be more physical than they have been and start imposing their will in the offense 11 personnel McLoud all day to throw incomplete but another flag comes and again it's Jaden Williams the intended receiver this time it's going to be Denver Harris the LSU transfer so that that was a foul I don't I don't have any Pals with that was the ball catchable number 21 at the distance to the goal first and go well he was draped all over him he was and they got him with holding so that changes everything I thought it was just going to be pass interference but number 29 half the distance to the goal automatic first down so obviously again if they if they're going to call holding then it really doesn't matter I thought it was going to be Pi that ball looked to be a little uncatchable to me but you know again I think that's the right call from the official and by the way if you're going to get beat for a touchdown you should hold henkins straight up the middle touchdown the fifth year senior from El Paso Texas finds the end zone as the Bobcats extend their lead to 273 well the road run the defense is demoralized from the two penalties they were playing pretty good red zone defense up until that point but once you get that close again with the offensive line being as dominant as it has been really you got no shot to keep him out well this Tempo used by the Texas state offense has been tough to keep up for the UTSA defense Mason Shipley kicks it through 8 to3 the GJ Kenny era here at Texas State continues to thrive yeah the offensive line again no one's getting off blocks you can get blocked as a Defender but but show me someone who's getting off the block you got half a man left getting blocked while trying to make a tackle that's just too hard but again the the problem with that drive really showed up with the two penalties and allowed this offense to get in Point Blank Range do you feel or sense a shift as Texas state in this Regional rivalry is making a real statement here I mean they battle for everything for recruits for fans for everything this seems like it feels like to me so far a seismic shift I do think that I mean if you just look at the style of play the physicality from the home team it's been there UTSA has had moments but they haven't been able to sustain it not because they can't sustained it but because of what the Bobcats are doing they're imposing their physical will offensively and defensively and it's shown up in the scoreboard Willie McCoy back deep standing at his own two- yd line ball once again gets blown off the te but to put a point on this thing you Texas State hasn't beat themselves with penalties so you got to give them credit for that so they're playing well but they're playing smarter they're not be themselves and so this is the potential of this squad when they don't set themselves back with silly penalties they'll bring it out to the 25 yd line after another Touchback so now this is big with 439 remaining before halftime utsa's offense is desperate to hold on to the football and put together a scoring Drive well I think they've done a couple cple things that they can feel like they can hang their hat on the running game has showed up a little bit I think you've had some success with tight ends in one-on-one situations you've just got to meet the moment and then when you do get in third down you've got to protect the quarterback he's shown his ability to make plays for you I think the five out empty sets on third down probably not the way you want to go with this pass rush so let's see what Justin Burke the offensive coordinator does with UTSA right now Robert Henry the running back trying to keep up with this Bobcats offense on the TOs sweep a huge hit at the 25 yd line Ryan Nolan once again Caleb Culp also in Pursuit this is a fired up team on both sides of the football yeah the perimeter Run game has been non-existent because these guys refuse to loaf Texas State defensively are running to the football and when they get there they're getting there angry a gain of one hardfought yard Owen maau extends the play pass incomplete trying to find Robert Henry who adjusted got his left hand on it but could not haul it in so that time it was the coverage we talked about the pass rush helping the coverage and the coverage helping the pass rush that time the offensive line of UTSA stood up and gave their quarterback plenty of time but the coverage was outstanding there was nobody open he tried to find a late leaking guy and threw an inaccurate pass and once again tyoka it is third and long for the road runners two of eight so far in this game that's not very good Macau the former Colorado Buffalo completes the pass but going to be nowhere near the line to gain Josh Eaton comes up to make the big stop and so once again it's a three and- out forced by Texas State his defense is humming the sidelines is humming they've going to have field position and I expect them to be aggressive Cole Wilson the uh Return Man had five punt returns for 53 yards with a long of 18 yds a week ago this another huge opportunity for Texas state with three 55 remaining in the half takes a UTSA roll to the 46 yd line but still a short field for this Bobcats offense that has been scoring quickly and scoring in bunches I would not be surprised if Texas State tries to take a shot here you got a little bit of a demoralized Sidelines over there from the guys in white this is a an opportunity to me in this area of the field got great field position wouldn't be shocked if you see a play action pass and try to go up over the top and catch the defense licking their wounds and get another score I know this is only the sixth meeting between these two Regional Rivals but Texas state has the most first half points in this rivalry they've ever had against the road runners and looking to tack on UTSA has never lost to to Texas State torren burges junor the running back Fox motions left they keep it on the ground straight up the middle untouched not until the third level my goodness another big gain on first down until Z Frasier made the tackle and he was met one-on-one with the safety and the safety whiffed and burges has some explosion we talked about that earlier but he's also got some wiggle in those hips how often are we seeing these backs though through the second level like you talked about before without being touched Chase Todd the center has been leading the way on second and a short three they come up about a yard short so it'll be third and one Ronald triplet red Shir Jr defensive end from Houston on the stop that entire offensive line are transfers none of them signed out of high school to play for the Bobcats yet they've come together and found some cohesion though I mean this is a very cohesive unit and the left side came from Incarnate Word the center from Houston and the right side from ULM and from Colorado not a guy in that group under 315 lbs now think about it where's the holding calls haven't seen a lot of holding calls right very very sound up front and we are nearing the two-minute time out and indeed we have gotten there one of the new rules of football here in 2024 we'll step away for the two-minute timeout 283 Texas state at crucial stages business owners ask themselves how am I going to do this it's not about doubt it's ABC all season Welcome to our Sunday night Booth welcome Big Time Players unbelievable Big Time plays and Big Time personalities welcome to the show Sunday Night Baseball Sundays at 7 on ESPN welcome Big Time Players Big Time plays and Big Time personalities Sunday Night Baseball at 7: on ESPN ESPN plus it's the spot for the NCAA MLB UFC ESPN plus it's in the ESPN app the scoring Improvement has been dramatic since Gary Joe Kenny III GJ Kenny came from Incarnate Word along with his offensive coordinator M left witch last year and Tyre Jackson they have picked up this year where they left off they put 34 on the board last Saturday here against Lamar in the season opener and they're well on Pace to go flying past that today well coach Kenny is the student Jeff trailer is the teacher and right now the pupil is taking it to the teacher and it's good to see Lincoln Perry Break Free the Arkansas state transfer who has come over injury with the 47 yd touchdown run going untouched to the end zone untouched is correct that's a one-on-one battle and it appeared to me that the secondary Defender whether that was the linebacker or the down safety picked the wrong hole that's running with vision my friend you slide you find it slow to the hole fast through it pick him up and put him down Lincoln Perry beautiful job you deserve that touchdown run once again Mason Shipley boots it through all Texas State 353 and how about Lincoln Perry who missed all of 2023 with a knee injury I'd say he's back yeah see I I just saw a Defender tried to take the wrong way left the Gap open but Perry give him credit a lot of backs don't run with their eyes my friends they run where they were tght the hole was going to be Perry did a great job of cutting the ball back behind the blocking found the seam that he needed and obviously he has the speed to go to distance they say he's a very reliable guy he can do a little bit of everything he'll Block in pass Pro he can catch the football and as you saw he can run it as well they feel very very comfortable with all of their backs and Perry's one of them and he's the fifth running back we have seen today and yeah his two years at Arkansas State caught four passes for touchdowns ran for a couple a versatile weapon out of Houston High School in Germantown Tennessee yeah he's a plug and play guy you don't have to worry about what the play call is when he's in the game because he understands he can do a little bit of everything I mean it it's just really an embarrassment of Richard in the back field but again it doesn't matter who's running it when the offensive line is clicking at this level and once again the two-time NJCAA All-American at Kilgore College Willie McCoy with no chance to make something happen on the return as that football goes sailing out and through the end zone one more time I'm going to be honest with you I didn't see this coming I didn't see 35 to3 in the first half in this game not with this rivalry not with this history not with these two coaches and how well they know each other Texas state now has 10 plays of 15 yards or more the chunk plays alone canb for 284 yards of total offense alone canbin for 284 yards of total offense here in the first half that's staggering wow maau Under Pressure breaks a tackle now takes a pretty good shot at the 28 yd line by Max Harris the middle linebacker out of Mansfield Legacy in Alabama yeah you you ever seen a pack of wolves no well you just well you just did you just saw a pack of wolves they just happen to be wearing bobot jerseys maau gained three yards that pass uncatchable as Houston Thomas went to the turf unable to grab it UTSA loves to use its tight ends but they have not been able to get them going Oscar Cardis Houston Thomas Patrick over they are usually much more productive they've had a moment or two but what you saw in that last play was a young quarterback who's been feeling the heat all day and pulled a string on the pass when there was no pass rush that's because he's been used to getting hit used to getting chased that's what a four-man Rush does for you again it's in valuable for a defense and now let's see if they can get home here again on third down and long pass gets thrown near sideline and it falls incomplete JJ Sparkman the senior who transferred in from Texas Tech was guarded well by the Oklahoma transfer Josh Eaton Ben Bell the excellent Edge rusher again creating pressure so I like that Justin Burke kept the back in to give a little bit more time so that was enough time but there's no rhythm to the offense and so when you throw a 50/50 ball like that without any rhythm going into it it's not shocking that that was an uncatchable ball that just no one's comfortable in white jerseys on offense and so you know that that's just a really tough situation but again for Justin Burke what do you call Wilson has to go back to his 26 yd line still on his feet makes another man miss and that is a heck of a return I mean he only got eight yards on it I say only but he did really well to get those eight before marcelis Wilkerson dragged him down yeah you ask punt returners to to beat one man you got to make one man miss well that time he made multiple guys miss you got to give a lot of credit to this entire special team's unit they Pride themselves on Punt and punt return and that's how they feel like they can flip field position and give hidden yardage to both their offense and set up their defense to not be in bad situation so multiple times throughout the conversation with both of these coordinators but especially defensive coordinator to the 35 yd L the previous play is on the video reviewer looks like they're going to review the spot if I'm not mistaken well even though they are accustomed the Bobcats to getting that quote hidden yardage and big plays out of special teams they've not needed it we just showed the graphic of all of the chunk yard this offense just continues to pile up tyoka yeah again I I know I sound like a broken record and these skill position guys deserve a lot of credit don't get me wrong motty Jenkins Burgess Perry they've all been great out of the back field the receivers have made their plays and had their moments obviously Jordan McLoud has been lights out and playing like the player of the year he is but when your offensive line gives you the ability to do whatever you want to do it makes the game look easier than it actually is well as it stands this 32-point deficit would be the largest halftime deficit for UTSA since they trailed Baylor back in 2019 35 to nothing they lost that game 6314 wow again I'm stunned at at this after watching the tape talking to these coaches you know I just did not see this coming and I don't think it was UTSA not being ready to play when they got here I didn't see that at all I I saw great body language the feel like the receiver's knee was down when he caught the ball at the 26 yd line the clock will be reset to one 12 and be first and 10 all those beautiful mes it didn't even happen partner unfortunately we saw it but it didn't happen we saw it it happened it just isn't official it's not going to count okay I think they said his knee was down when he caught the football so before what we're just seeing here yep and so they've got to put time back back on the clock and spot the ball back at the 26 yd line where his knee went down right there great great job great job by our camera folks to catch it great job by the officials to be on it again this college football as soon as your knee down you're down Texas state is up to 368 yards of total offense thank it's second most in the first half against an FBS opponent in the last 20 years wow I think they're looking for more points you think mhm the offense back out there with a minute 12 to play with McLoud tucks it wrapped up at the 28 yd line and the clock will run jamen buckton sophomore nose tackle from New Orleans wrapped him up 61 325 lbs came down heavy on McLoud I guarantee you McLoud didn't like that very much much at all he's going to be like coach let's stay away from these quarterback draws could have dumped it down to Perry instead he goes down the near sideline and has a man Joey hobber big play another chunk yardage play Zack Morris in coverage but GJ Kenny team once again on the Move well so yeah he he had to check down available like you called but why check it down when you got that much time he he has confidence in his offensive line and that's a deep comeback by hbert offici so 17 yards yeah that's better than a check down yeah I agree but when your offensive line again is just humming you got the confidence to hold on to it play a little Sandlot football run around a little bit and find a guy well when you've got the experience of Jordan McLoud three years at UCF including a starter in 2019 and 2020 then a couple of years at Arizona as a backup last year the conference Player of the Year in the Sun Belt at James Madison University where he had three times last year Tai six total touchdowns in three games you can see that presence you can see the calm going through his progressions when you when you go into the portal often times you're looking for Diamonds in the Rough right guys that looking for a better situation looking for opportunity looking to maybe get coached up they dipped into the portal and got a readymade diamond shining blue and bright I mean it just doesn't happen very often and kudos to them and I'm happy for them and him did you go a little Rihanna there did I it's close I didn't sing it though I know better thank God Perry takes a couple of Defenders with him to the 45 yd line a gain of three Martavius French among those in on the stop time out Texas State this is their third and final timeout in the first half their time out of the half we should mention that uh this UTSA defense playing without one of its better players their money backer Don Taylor they are hopeful that he'll be back next Saturday in the big game up in Austin against the longhorn 7:00 eastern on ESPN but they are playing without one of their starters but uh no matter how good D Taylor could have played today it's not going to make a difference the way it's going not because of the offensive line that's why I mean Taylor is a terrific player I mean he plays that sort of hybrid Sam linebacker safety type position again like you said they call it the money position because he can do a little bit of everything and when you play that well playing a position that versatile you can make some money so I get why they call it the money position but yeah I mean hopefully they can get him back quickly but I don't think it would have really made the difference difference today so far just because the line of scrimmage is where the game is being lost right now for the road runners Cole Wilson split wide to the top of your screen trips to the bottom of your screen Lincoln Perry again the running back getting an opportunity here late in the second quarter he'll stay into block McLoud spins out of it he's got options dancing around the line of scrimmage and eventually goes down everybody was covered down field went to a prevent defense they understood the situation he was going to be looking for the hail Murray it's the best you can do in that situation defensively this I35 Showdown rivalry historically has been all UTSA 5-0 all time against Texas state but the script has been flipped through the first half here today Texas State the Bobcats making a major statement here at halftime back with our halftime report right after this this it's a big match for the national women soccer league and only the best will welcome to the 2024 NFL season what what are you doing seriously these are my buttons only I press these buttons week two in full swing we've got a great slate of games tonight how about both LSU and Clemson in action looking to avenge week one losses and then of course there is the Marquee matchup it's the top matchup of Trevor's Trio Tennessee and NC State tonight the vs love to get up and down the field Trevor the wolf pack much more deliberate both teams great quarterback play and Kevin part of the fun of this game is the contrast in quarterbacks for Tennessee Nico IAM malava is a young guy who's got amazing Talent last week in the opener against Chattanooga he threaded the ball into Tight Windows even when he was under pressure and he showed a knack for being able to hit receivers on in stride so that they could be heroes after the catch well that's a young guy in NC State Grayson McCall is a grizzled veteran he won't try to win with amazing physical Talent he'll win with deception and experience and treachery and Tennessee has a very young secondary that's set up for a guy like Grayson McCall to be able to exploit 350 miles separate the school should be a great one tonight speaking of quarterback matchups there you've got the Superstar freshman Dylan riola at Nebraska the grizzled veteran at Colorado shador Sanders how do the Huskers win this game tonight well this is another Young quarterback that doesn't really know how much trouble he's in he's too young to understand it yet but Dylan rayola was magnificent last week in the opener against UTEP once again Under Pressure dropping dimes down the field if you do it once maybe twice it might be luck but he kept doing it over and over again he would do well though to avoid Travis Hunter the Dual threat from Colorado on offense Hunter makes his Splash plays these are the ones that show up on Sports Center's top 10 but on defense he's one of the best cover corners and one of the most physical tackling corners and so I would think that while we're watching Hunter catch balls rayola should be watching where Hunter is on the defense so he can stay away from him he'll be on the field all game long as he was in week one and then one of the outliers from last season USF and Alabama this was a 33 game in the third quarter following this game Jaylen milro really took off where do he need to go to get to the next level he needs to improve his intermediate passing we know that he is a terrific Runner a terrific deep thrower but when you throw the ball deep you don't really need to read the defense or have nuanced trajectories and velocities you just he it over the top of everybody those intermediate throws require you to know what the defense is doing and to layer the ball and to have a lot more subtlety as a quarterback that is where he needs to improve this year and if he does watch out for Alabama because that will make him one of the top quarterbacks in the nation game two of the kin deor Arrow one of the three games in Trevor's Trio to keep an eye on tonight and your second half is coming up next at crucial stages business owners ask themselves how am I going to do this it's not state was a thriller Trevor this is ton green hooking up with Luke HW he was a revelation for the Razer backs over 400 yards passing in this game tied at 28 but back come the pokes under two minutes to go Allan Bowman to Brennan Presley yeah Oly Gordon their great running back was ineffective in this game Bowman brought him back they would kick a field goal take a three-point lead just before the end of regulation Kyle Ramsey from 45 to go to OT in OT after two missed field goals here's Oly Gordon yeah that was his best play of the game he only averaged 2.9 yards per carat and then on fourth and one look at the Tackle by kendle Daniels stuffing the run and the pokes win it 3931 K State in two lane what a game from deri and Mena here to Alex Bowman he was lights out again K State could not stop the two-lane quarterback in this game closing in on 8 minutes to go tied at 27 the K State Defense makes a big play Jack fabis the scoop and score right this is one of a couple of massive plays where K State's defense carried the day for it was not easy on the road but the wild cats Come Away with a 34 2 s win at two lane welcome into our college football Studios BYU National Champion Trevor match Kevin Connor is here with you week two of the Season best game of the day at noon at least on paper going in was Texas on the road in an arbor taking on the reigning and defending national champions Michigan if Quinn yers and Gunner Helm were nervous Trevor it certainly didn't show right this was the payoff of how they started this game they throw wide left wide right wide left wide W and then they went vertical you making it 7 nothing there here to make it 24-3 to Matthew golden and this was again what Quinn yers was able to do they found the one-on-one matchup so much for that rushing game not being there for the horns look at Ryan Wingo that was so well blocked they've got offensive lineman 20 yards down field running around looking for someone to hit and then the same Drive ERS to Jaden blue 31-6 Texas in front at that point it was not even as close as the final score indicates 31 to 12 what a statement Texas snaps a trio of long Michigan win streaks the Wolverines had won 23 in a row at the Big House entering play another 28 straight at home in August and September Trevor Texas went in and dominated a Michigan defense that was supposed to be the strength of this team how did they do it that was the big surprise right they did it in two ways Kevin one the Texas offensive line which came into this season expected to be one of the most experienced and best offensive line of the nation at Key moments dominated the Michigan defensive front that featured a couple of future first round draft choices the other was the way the plays were designed and called by Texas coach Steve sarkeesian and his offensive staff they were able to spread out the Michigan defense and then hit the seams when they decided to go vertical and over and over again it seemed like the Texas had the right play call on for the exact play call that the Michigan defense presented them this Michigan defense is legitimately one of the best in the country and Texas just toyed with them you know October is going to be the big month for Texas but so far September is off to a pretty good start the 3112 win on the road Bowling Green gave Penn State everything they wanted and more pick it up in the second quarter 10-point Falcons lead this is Drew Allard to Omari Evans and this is one of the few long passes they had they didn't really try to throw the ball down the field very much Penn State well you know what they were able to run it and they were able to get a nice play out of the backfield from Nicholas Singleton there first lead of the game for the nney Lions and then Trevor this one to Singleton kind of put it away it did and this was a long run and it seemed like this is what Penn State wanted to do just pound the ball play bully ball they ran the ball almost twice as much as they threw it in this game which surprised me a little bit I thought they would want to keep that momentum in the passing game going from the open pen State the narrow win Georgia Tekken Syracuse on the day they honor and retire the number 54 a Football Hall of Famer Dwight freeny such a great lineage there at Syracuse this is Kyle mccor to aand gadston this game shaped up as a a matchup between the passing of McCord and the bully running of Georgia Tech Georgia Tech down 10 they recovered an onside kick that's Jamal Haynes the touchdown run but under two minutes to go mcord to gadston how about the orange right and gadston one of their great receivers one of the best in the nation was injured for part of last year in the chemistry with mcord in this game was phenomenal the Fran Brown era off to a 2 and 0 start when we come back we'll look ahead to a big one in Lincoln tonight shador Sanders in Colorado off the win a week ago set to take on the dynamic freshman Dylan riola we'll talk about it in Trevor's Trio next did you know Nationwide is so much more than a great insurance company they're one of America's largest financial services companies too just like I'm Rival on September 14th at spere the greatest live sporting event of all time let's go baby welcome Big Time Players Big Time plays and Big Time personalities Sunday Night Baseball Sundays at 7 on ESPN if there's a chance for what you hope for and you dream for and for how can you stand for a the I35 Showdown has been all Texas State 353 our scores we get ready for the start of the third quarter here at UFCU stadium that uh did not have an empty seat at the start it'll be interesting to see if some of those road runners fans are already back on I35 heading back down to San Antonio my goodness I hope not wow with tyoka Jackson I'm Doug Sherman so glad you're with us here on ESPNU for what was expected to be a highly competitive showdown between these excellent group of five teams but it's been very one-sided and the reason is because the guys at home bought their offensive line and their offensive line decided to take over the game and that has really been it in a nutshell and my favorite play is the second play you're going to see the entire side of the defense get crushed down and listen we came in thinking that we would hear a lot from a guy like Jamal liins who's one of the top tacklers in the history of this program he's got one tackle in the first half as a linebacker because the offensive line is really wreak inhabit with his defensive line and so really there's a lot of stats a lot of Big Time plays being made by little guys but it's the big guys who are winning this game for the Bobcats well defensively for the Bobcats Jordan pul leads the way with six tackles Ryan Nolan has five tackles offensively Jordan McLoud has been in the middle of everything 14 of 22 passing 270 yards and a touchdown he's also scored a pair on the ground he has been the straw that during this draam you're right he's been the decision maker because the offensive line has given him the opportunity to see what he wants to do in a passing game situation and is giving him running Lanes he's not known for a dynamic run up the score high efficiency Runner but his decision making has allowed him to be efficient in the Run game and that's why he scoring touchdowns and he has spread the love seven different receivers have caught passes for Texas State led by Chris Dawn four receptions 129 yards including a 60yd touchdown Joey hobbert has caught four passes but it's UTSA that has the football first to begin the third quarter Willie McCoy picks his way across the 25 yd line dropped at the 29 yd line where this baguer road runners offense will come back out Tres Moore in coverage with the stop so right now if you're UTSA you're not trying to get anything all back in one drive all you're trying to do is get a first down and then get another first down and stack a play here and a play there then and see what we're doing Eddie Lee marberger is going to get the started quarterback in place of Owen maau who was 10 of 23 passing for 105 yards in that first half and so they changed it up to the fourth year Road Runner a red shirt junor from Mission Texas on play action completes the pass Devin mccuan what should we be looking for from Eddie Lee marberger well he's a little bit more of a mover um they're a guy that there he's comfortable they're comfortable with but he can move with his legs you're going to see them move the pocket I believe a little bit more and throw some more off platform throws with number nine in the game well he played quite a bit last year got into 11 games made a couple of starts complete pass a flag comes in maybe a late hit Steven Parker I think was the defensive lineman who got home and he is going to be penalized here we talked about the emotional penalties last week for this Bobcat team they don't want to get in that situation personal foul targeting zero of the defense with the clown of the H the previous video review so the 64 red shirt senior from Dallas South oakcliff High School who has NFL Scouts paying attention may be done for the day so would when we see this replay there's going to be a couple things you want to look for first of all understand that the quarterback is a defensive player he's not a runner so any kind of forcible contact above the shoulders is going to be a red flag for this officiating crew now they talked about crowning a helmet are we going to see an indicator of where the defender dropped his helmet and hit with the top portion of it and I think he's a little off to the side to be quite honest with you now you know that angle is not the greatest and so maybe from the other angle from The End Zone maybe you could see that the crown of the helmet makes contact because that's what they called him for and the back judge is right there you see the yellow flag the back judge is right there so clearly in his mind there was real contact made to the face mask area or the head area of the quarterback by the defender of the crown of the helmet again that's the top portion of the helmet when you drop that helmet that's bad news and you know that extends to the neck as well trying to protect the defenseless player it's it's it's always so it is it's marginal and and again the whole idea is to protect the player safety and I get it I'm all over it but to me that's just a little nitpicky a little too marginal I don't like it hopefully they change it we'll see what happens well they are taught to throw the flag and then go to replay so that they can make sure yeah because you can't go to video if it's not called initially and again a dangerous hit involving launch upward thrust or severe strike it's a 15yd penalty and disqualification for the player with either forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent after the video review there's no file for targeting with the crown of the hel the B we place at the 31 yd line third down and T i' like to say we saw that they adj adjudicated it properly however we have thought before that it was going to be called off and it wasn't so it's really hard and and it just you know it's some icve it is you know and and I would say this Parker to me made the effort to hit with his shoulder and not his moment there was not a launch and so there was no real indicator for targeting korian Barnes the running back back into the game for UTSA and again the backup quarterback is in Eddie Lee bar marberger made a couple of starts last year for the injured Frank Harris throws it down the sideline a one-handed grab was he inbounds no DJ Allen with a spectacular catch with Josh Eaton step for step but he could not make the play inbound we talked about it earlier a lot of playing man coverage is being in the right position Joshua Eaton being where he was forc this throw to be nowhere but out of bounds a tremendous effort to catch the football make no mistake about it but it is all out of bounds so it doesn't count at all again Cole Wilson ISM MTI couple of dangerous return men both in the kicking game and in the punt game Wilson back to receive the punt and it's going to head out of Bounds at about the 38 maybe 37 yd line they're going to mark it at the 38 and so once again the Texas state offense comes out with pretty good field position and what can Jordan McLoud do in the second second half to try and keep Pace with what he did in the first just a terrific first half and it was chunk plays all over the place tyoka a lot of TDS on that screen and as a Defender you don't want to see that one punt the entire first half that that that is amazing offensive football not a lot of penalties for the most part took care of the football and just almost a perfect first half Joey hobbert in motion the hand is off to the allc conference tailback ismel MTI second team All-American last year for ESPN he led the nation in all purpose yardage as a kick returner punt returner receiving and inrushing the football he was productive off to a good start again here this season and they really haven't relied on him very much today you know last week he got off 28 carries 156 in a touchdown but today he's just been a complimentary player to the quarterback well last September at UTSA down at the Alamo Dome he was held in check in a game that the road runners won but like you say they've got so many other weapons clicking that they don't need number 21 ISM mty to go off right now that time he was found with a checkdown we talked about the decision making of Jordan mlau that that was a a beautiful Rush by UTSA one of the few times today they've gotten into the back field got into the face of McLoud but instead of trying to do much heit get his check down so often young quarterbacks don't understand the value of checking that ball down and moving it Forward McLoud sets up the screen it's motti dropped at the 45 yd line by Martavius French and that'll bring up fourth down and three I like how the team in white came out to be honest defensively they showed a lot of hustle a lot of fight they're not looking at the scoreboard that was a really outstanding play by the entire defense to Rally to that football and get off this through on third down starting center Chase Todd who has had a terrific game so far has just hobbled off the field and is headed toward the Texas state bench with one of the medical personnel David Nunes on to punt one more time just the second time actually just the second punt forced by this UTSA def defense end overend and fair catch made at around the 10 yd line by Chris Carpenter time out early third quarter can UTSA start to chip away here in Stan Marcus okay can I really do this it's what everyone asks at every new stage of life we say yes Sandy Spring Bank isn't just in the community we helped plus it's in the ESPN app feeling so F and ready to win better step back don't box me in please stand down please sit down please step back I will step aside cuz I own it yeah I own it when I the I the road runners stick with their backup quarterback here for their second possession of this second half Eddie Le marberger who completed 54% of his passes in limited play last year as Frank Harris's back up how about the story of Frank Harris over the last was a decade and a half at UTSA however long he was there my goodness he uh was unique in college football his former backup with a flag coming in hooks up with Willie McCoy brono Griffin has come in at running back the Vanderbilt transfer as well I think he have pass interference there I think the defensive player wrapped at back arm if I'm not mistaken pass was completed in regardless but that's the defense 15 yards correction as a spoted the fou automatic first down just again the wrapid of back arm by the defender is what a call was made that's number 27 very close though very tight coverage right there that's the free safety Bobby Crosby out of Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale marberger moves the pocket and hits his receiver Roco Griffin in stride out of rink and georia Jordan pulk in Pursuit with the tackle good job by marberger throwing a catchable ball on a move and a lot of times when you go to your backup quarterback is not necessarily what the starter did maau you want to give your offense a spark see if the second guy can do something they give the rock back to William Anthony Roco Griffin Jr he's one of six kids mom is Tiffany of course his dad William senior he was a three-star recruit coming out of South Effingham High School the uh military wanted him but he went to the SEC instead D Vanderbilt spent three years with the commodor and started some games a broken tackle here and a chance for a big play Chris Carpenter out to Midfield Bobby Crosby with the tackle well Carpenter is a Colorado transfer and luckily they coralled him when they did because that guy can fly you see another injured player come out official Tavi and Coleman down on the field second time Coleman has been slow to get up but just a slant the ball's where it needs to be in a Miss Tackle by the defender if you're playing man coverage and you don't make the tackle it can look a little ugly Dante Thompson with that missed tackle and so once again Coleman all 300 plus going to use a little help getting up tough dude right there second-year starter for this defense had seven and a half tackles for loss last year three and a half sacks he's put in a day here today when you got a 300 pounder who can get in the back field like him he had a half a sack last week he's active get a hurry half a tackle for loss he just stuffed the stat sheet you love to see big guys be active and as tough as he is it wouldn't shock me if he came back again before this game's over maybe here be able to hear the wind on some of our microphones it's been a breezy day here in Texas we're about halfway between Austin and San Antonio in San Marcus Alex Merritt the former Eastern Michigan Stand Out has come in to replace the injured player plenty of time to throw and a beautiful strike to Willie McCoy the senior from Houston on the crossing route able to get free of Caleb culpin coverage well what I'd lik was the adjustment from Justin Burke they went Max forch they had 12 Personnel in the game two tight ends they lined them up on the wings and they assisted the offensive line and as you said plenty of time to throw the football fake the hand off oh big hit and he threw it away picked off by Bobby Crosby and he's going to get some yardage after the interception still on his feet out to the 48 yd line and finally dropped by Chris Carpenter well maybe that will continue to spark after the push by Dominique rat he was all over the quarterback Eddie larger and forced that interception officially carford just saved the touchdown there's no question about that that was going to be a house call and just as marberger was getting into a little bit of a rhythm starting to feel good about himself the pressure showed up again and forced an Aaron throw that created the interception and it's Crosby who is being treated now by the medical staff he feels that pressure I guarantee you folks I mean quarterbacks have that sense to feel pressure from the backside he throws the football and What A Catch I mean he wasn't expecting that football to come to him that quickly great job by Crosby and look at the running after the catch not sure where the injury came in I think it was on the celebration with his teammate oh wait a minute wait a minute he ran into CJ James the center for UTSA yeah a little bit of an extra there I mean understand it looked like a little bit of a chicken wing but when you're 310 lbs like CJ is that's all it takes and excuse me for bringing up food again but is that number four how many is that who's counting me well listen everybody on the crew all I know is Crosby is up so I can have fun and say I would love to have a 300 lb chicken wing any day to week and now the uh celebration for the takeaway to the crowd in front of us here at UFCU Stadium what's he holding up there was that like a a turnover chain or something going on it seemed like it to me I was trying to Fig figure out exactly what it is it looked to me like a chain there it is look at that big Medallion looks like some of your gold that you wear around your neck you know that's not true so the offense for Texas State looking to do more damage running the football torren Burgess Jr again I I'm I'm I'm impressed I'm going be honest with you I'm impressed with utsa's defensive mentality and no quitters out there and I respect that fake the short pass McLoud again all day flag comes in the defensive back field and so mlod just throws the football away the offensive line is continuing to do their job so they didn't leave their game in the locker room the question is was the reason he couldn't find anybody open because there was some holding going on in the defens of backfield I think that's going to be exactly what happened 21 defense 10 y penalty on the previous spot automatic first out that's Denver Harris who just couple of years ago was raid as the 25th best recruit in the country coming out of Northshore High School in Houston it's amazing how many ESPN 300 guys from the last couple of years are on this UTSA roster and he's one of them but he started his college career at Texas A&M then five games last year at LSU and now in his first year with the road runners committing that penalty hit behind the line of scrimmage but it doesn't matter Burgess from perin Texas bounces off and picks up positive yardage the initial push was made by chadera o22 one of the true freshmen actually in the rotation up front for UTSA and Doug the penalties are starting to mount for the road runners remember last week 16 penalties against the Bobcats that was a point of bis is going in the week looks like that's been solved now unfortunately UTSA is shooting themselves in the in the foot with untimely penalties is miti back in at running back replacing Burgess he gets the call straight up the middle not touched until he was three yds four yards past the line of scrimmage Owen Peewee with a tackle what kind of luxury is that to be a to to roll in a a bunch of backs have your quarterback run the football and now the best of the group get the ball whoa and he was hit hard there though yeah no hole that time filled by Brevin Randall the Louisiana Tech transfer Standing Tall this is the the problem this defense had all day it's been third and short and third and manageable it's just hard to stay get off the field excuse me it's hard to keep the offense off the field if you're in third and short situations they just haven't had enough first and second down efficiency defensively to stay away from these third and short opportunities and give credit to Texas State because they've converted on a high clip which is the opposite of the other side of the football that UTSA has been behind the sticks all game Conor Fox first down Texas State Wally and Davidson The Defenders Texas state with its 20th first down of the afternoon continue to be impressed by L M left witch and his imagination and play calling it's really get it's really hard to get a beat on what he's doing I mean he's he's he's mixing it up very nicely and his trigger man is on fire two years ago at Incarnate Word they had the most potent offense in the country in FCS down the seam he's got a man that's a touchdown by Chris Dawn Jr he finds the end zone one more time reception second time he's gotten a touchdown one-on-one coverage and is as basic a route as you can get it's a post route and if that Defender allows you to get inside there will be an opportunity to catch the football the ball was a little high and behind them but you saw beautiful body control and an adjustment from dawn Jr in the air that was a thing of beauty yeah the defender Zack Morris was with him stride for stride but the ball was put where only the receiver could get it that's right he did a great job of setting a route up to get inside and once you beat him inside you just need a catchable ball and finish the job and young Mr McLoud did exactly that the point after by Mason Shipley extends the lead to 423 another big play by Jordan McLoud and this highly potent Texas State offense can I really do this it's what what everyone asks at every new stage of life we say yes Sandy Spring Bank isn't just in the community we helped build it so we've got you covered if you want to buy a house a kaleidoscope of experiences if you're looking for that soul that unbreakable Spirit you've come to the right place the US Open August 26th through September 8th on ESPN ESPN college football is brought to you by Ram trucks built to serve upside Ty Jackson I'm Doug Sherman some of this capacity crowd has left the building as the home team has been completely dominant right from the start in every phase ty not a whole lot you can say other than these guys came to play from the opening kick Texas State they've been dominant they've been more physical they've made less mistakes and you know this is not the UTSA team we saw on tapate and I think it's because of the opponent well after after their win last week Jeff trailer clearly wasn't happy with everything let's take a listen you know you coach at a really good place when you win and your fans aren't happy your coaching staff's not happy your media is not happy your players are not happy my wife's not happy Izzy's not happy I mean you know is our fourth birthday yesterday and I mean Izzy didn't even want me to be there to blow out the candles I mean she's I'm I'm in the dog house with her too that's a bad feeling so his wife Carrie the dog Izzy not happy last week after winning a football game it was not terribly impressive taking down Kennesaw State 2816 and again this is a young program that has a rabid and growing fan base in the city of San Antonio and they have high expectations based on what the coaching staff has built there so now if you don't win by three touchdowns every week against opponent you think you're supposed to you're going to have some unhappiness so is it going to be markedly worse with the way things are going here today in that household and is he going to really be unhappy when coach gets home today yeah I don't want to see Izzy at this point I might have to I might have to look up the nearest hotel 6 or Motel 6 or whatever it's called but this is not the standard these guys have set a standard of Excellence and obviously today is not that the good news is just one game official there's Jeff trailer heading out to attend to another slow to get up offensive lineman there's he coming up tonight in Prime Time Vanderbilt will play elorn state right here on ESPNU over on ABC the big one Tennessee and North Carolina State and on ESPN late night Arizona State home against Mississippi State I got a sneaky feeling about that wolf pack at home I don't know the volunteers better be ready to play the ACC could use it they could you know that's right hasn't been a great start for him it is remarkable how the college football landscape has shifted so heavily to the SEC in the uh Big 10 conference ACC wants to be able to hang in there but it really does feel like a power two Oscar Cardis comes to the slot he's a big clutch performer we've yet to really call his name today Ed Lee marberger going to run out of Bounds at the 35 yd Line Jordan pul giving Chase and and that's what I thought about marberger has a ability to make some plays with his legs and we talked about the off platform throws we've seen a little bit of that and it's a really good job of not trying to be too cute seeing Green Grass and taking it one of the few first downs they've had all game play blown dead before the pass to Chris Carpenter first start offense number from the previous spot so they're four for 13 on third down and here's the reason why I mean this they're they just keep getting behind the chains whether it's an untimely penalty whether it's a tfl against them whether it's a no gain on first down there's been multiple reasons why they've gotten behind chains and that's really been the story of the game four for 13 on third down you just can't get any continuity and Rhythm on offense when you're that bad on third down marberger goes head first toward the 39 yd line takes a bit of a shot from James Neil he pops back up tough guy marberger but you don't want to do a whole lot of that you want to make sure you're sliding feet first more often than head first showing pressure on the edge still 17 on the play clock marberger and his intended receiver never turned around Willie McCoy had no idea that was not a run yeah he's stalk blocking with the ball in the air he he actually could have been called for a penalty I mean that technically to me was offensive pass interference Because by the by the rule by the of the law you can't go hit a guy blocking him when the ball's in the air so the officials let that go but yeah just two guys not on the same page and it appeared to me that the entire offense except for Willie McCoy was looking for him to get the football third down six yds to go the 45 is the line to game here comes the pressure marberger under Fire and he's going to go down multiple Defenders were in on him in a heartbeat to Mei adelei former Texas A&M Aggie former Michigan State Spartan making the play When the road runners have gone to empty on third down it has been basically a disaster this pass rush is too athletic and too quick off the ball there aren't any running rooms for any kind of draws quarterback draws there isn't enough time to get back and be efficient throwing the football I again I just would stay away from emptying third down it's just been no good for you and now their place kicker Chase Allen is going to punt for the first time this season little Australian style there and the fans here for the Bobcats couple of them booing cuz they wanted to return flag down I think they're not happy about that that rough and the punter call as well they wanted to see a return and they didn't want to see that flag thrown run to the kicker on the return team number 26 remain fourth down so when you're trying to rush that punter you want to pick a spot three yards in front of her and that's not it and that is incredible acting job Chase Allen you might get an Oscar for that one buddy Chase bod or Michael Bodwin rather Michael Bodwin II is the one called for that penalty here's the question though with that penalty do you go for it on fourth down I mean why not yeah I don't see why not now what I wouldn't do is go empty which at the moment they are not 0 for one so far let's see if they can pick this one up got to get to the 45 yd line rolling right throwing has a man it's a first down well-designed play to pick up that first down you called it why was it welld designed because you put your quarterback on a move which is playing to his strength but it also gets him away from this pass rusher you do not want to be a stationary iron deer in the front lawn against this front Patrick overmy gain of seven go back to another tight end this one is JJ Sparkman senior from long viw Texas Bobby Crosby the free safety again in coverage good job by Patrick overmy as the lead blocker blocking him man coverage allowed that to be a successful play hasn't happened often UTSA now on the other side of the football or football field excuse me and another nicely thrown football from Eddie Lee marberger and another first down Chris Carpenter on the receiving end another transfer from Colorado but what I what I saw there by marberg is the ability to extend the play he just sort of slowly trotted outside wasn't a lot of pressure but Trot it outside to official the official timeout just Tred it outside to buy a little time to allow Chris Carpenter to clear 18 yd gain by Carpenter and so the officials call timeout we'll take a break with him our score 4 23 the greatest live sporting event of all time let's go baby let's hear it for the biggest stage of all a kaleidoscope of experiences if you're looking for that soul that unbreakable Spirit you've come to the the right place the US Open August 26th through September 8th on ESPN so on and now let's take a look at this week's college football playoff rankings brought to you by verbo and of course you got to look at Notre Dame losing to Thomas hammock Northern Illinois Huskies for the Fighting Irish does that mean they are kaput when it comes to the expanded College footall football playoff wow wow is Right pass incomplete trying to find Willie McCoy down the sideline the Fighting Irish losing to a Max school by two points that is incredible so this is where not being in a conference hurts a team like Notre Dame yeah if you're in a conference and you drop a game like that like my NY Lions almost did to Bowling Green you still got a pass because you can come back and win your conference to me if Notre Dame runs the table I I I don't know how you put them in after that loss no disrespect to Northern Illinois and hey they might be a great team and they might find themselves in the in the playoff all I know but I'm just saying right now today that looks like an O game for for Notre D and all I got to say is look out Ohio State and look out Missouri because you've got Mac opponents on your schedule tonight the Mac is on fire again we Penn State almost lost to Bowling Green at home that was a seveno Bowling Green punted one time in the first half wow they had to lead in Happy Valley they could have won that game so yeah the Mac is on fire right now the injured players Dominique Ratcliffe Richard Jr from Conroe Texas and so you know the the Mid-American Conference is the fifth of the group of five typically and certainly it's been more pronounced in recent years but can a team like Northern Illinois make itself a case if it winds up being the dominant team in the ma this year using a win like that could they get into conversation there's no question about it that type of win will now validate if they in fact go on and win a Mac title and assuming Notre Dame just has a blip and then goes on to have a good season then that makes them look great and you're going to have a huge argument so I I just think the the way this format has been put together is brilliant yes I think it's going to create a lot of controversy in the best possible way all across the country so again Toledo is expected to be the team to beat this year in the max the league with an 11% chance to make the college football playoff but those are just percentages and numbers I mean Northern Illinois if we had the expanded 12 team uh playoff 10 years ago whatever the numbers they've had years where they would have absolutely been in the Mi no question about it they put multiple NFL players in the league so uh the history of that of that program and the entire conference though is Rich will Henderson the true freshman from Gilmer Texas same Al mam Mater is both of our head coaches in this game again Jeff trailer was also the head coach there when his opposite number today GJ Kenny was his quarterback marberger doesn't have to get this all in one down they got two downs here third down and eight hit from behind on the release of the football is it a fumble Patrick over picks it up and gets tackled at the 14 yd line one of the B cats ran into the Umpire and they are both slow to get up Ryan Al is up but Steven Parker who is a much larger man was slower to get up and now he is going to limp his way to the near sideline all right just how about the play by overmire though that that might have been the best play all day for UTSA I mean the quick quick scoop first you going to see the rush and then the ball comes out watch the quick scoop I mean that is brilliant right there hustling to the football scooping up that ball how many times you've seen guys bend down kick the football boot the football yeah I mean picked it up scooped it up and immediately got up fied and got more than first down yardage speaking of rumbling bumbling and stumbling is there video of your one of NFL interception in your 11 yard return of course there is I got to see that and that 11 yards was Dynamic took you 12s seconds to get there but on first down to the end zone oh little separation but out of bounds goes the intended receiver JJ Sparkman with Josh Eaton all over him what an effort by SP on the field as the receivers out of bounds when the call was made in complete pass 6'4 225 lbs and that was an absolute thing of beauty had one foot been in that would have been a sports center top 10 well he had a combined three touchdowns the last three years when he was at Texas Tech trying to get his first as a member of the road runners here goes marberger He plows forward again head first inside the 5 yd line very near a first down before Manny nuny the former Florida Gator makes the Stop and this is what marberger brings to you that's a little bit different than M we talked about maau as a guy from the pocket who can beat you but in this game they needed somebody who could move because his pass rush has been all over him from the five headed towards the goal line and he's going to be just short Roco Griffin couldn't quite get there because Jordan pul dragged him to the turf one-on-one confrontations even though it's 22 men on the field generally it comes down to that that's very close to Breaking the plane they go with tempo once again the defense stiffens up against Roco Griffin we've called Ryan Nolan's name an awful lot this afternoon and you know every time I think of it we are in Texas his name is Ryan Nolan Nolan Ryan how about that but he's from Florida and I understand it wasn't a thing it just happened to be that probably Mom liked the name Ryan eight tackles a loss by the way by this Texas State Defense and that might be nine yep going nowhere fast well they have been winning in the trenches all afternoon Ty unbelievable on both sides yep and as much as the game of college football has evolved with the Innovation the spread the air rate and all of that it usually comes down to when there's similar talent to the confrontation at the line and scrimmage the team that dominates that on both sides will win the football game and just think though this was first and goal after that stuff at the at the goal line now they're down to Third and goal Griffin back alongside marberger going to try to throw for it incomplete the receiver was right around the goal line and if he could have pulled it in McCoy might have had a touchdown instead it'll bring up fourth and goal yeah I really believe when you're a backup quarterback one of the things that you're behind the eightball is timing with your receivers you just don't get as many reps with the front line guys I I think there's an opportunity for the road runners to run the football with the quarterback I I think if they go in heavy personnel and use marberger as the runner they might be a to outnumber this defense in the box and get in for a touchdown on fourth down marberger it is caught touchdown what a throw Willie McCoy adjusted and found the hole and that's the first time the road runners have gotten into the End Zone today that throw was Sensational I have no idea how he was able to fit it in such a small window watch how tight this is wow that's against the grain that's against his body's M emotion that boy that's something right there put that on the tape you you'll remember that one marberger Willie McCoy star in last year's win over Texas state with a 20yd highlight touchdown C catch he's got a short touchdown catch on fourth down to get the road runners to within 32 with only two seconds remaining in the third quarter well in this situation you just want to put together something positive on tape so that you can look at for the next week and UTSA are realizing now they've got a backup quarterback that they can turn to and rely on who has a little bit different skill set than Owen maau he's a little bit more with the moving with the legs and so when they get in a situation like this where the pass rush is creating problems for them they can feel good about turning to number nine well Owen maau in the first half was 10 of 23 for 105 yards here in the second half it's been Eddie Lee marberger show and he just guided a 19pl drive 75 yards took over seven minutes off the clock that'll build confidence for him and the staff in him and there will be better days for count he he did not play terribly he just didn't have much of a chance because his offensive line was getting dominated but I think being able to move the pocket and have a quarterback who can make plays with his legs and extend extend some of these plays to allow this tight coverage to break free has been really good for this offense today are we going to see an onside kick here I wouldn't I I would kick kick it deep and challenge my defense to start playing defense they they've been better in this second half they gotten a three and out I would kick it deep and play defense kick a ground ball over near the sideline picked up big hit near that sideline Drew Donley one of the backup wide receivers on that return and that is the end of the third quart that's the end of the third quarter well Signs of Life for UTSA in that third quarter they controled the football but they've got to score much more and much more frequently in the fourth quarter to make this a football game every business is special to its owners clients and Community but your business is specialized so at Sandy Spring Bank you have a banker and team devoted to you we know the this fight the trilogy fight to end the Rival on September 14th at spere the greatest live sporting event of all time let's go baby the US Open men's championship matches tomorrow at 2 Eastern 11:00 a.m. Pacific ABC and ESPN plus American Taylor Fritz takes on the number one seed Yanik Center Fritz is trying to become the first American man to win the US Open since Andy rodic 21 years ago coverage begins with a men's preview show 1 Eastern 10 a.m. Pacific that would be quite a story and it's been far too long for the American men to win a major championship with tyoka Jackson I'm Doug Sherman back here in San Marcus Texas and we continue to see more of the reserves but GJ Kenny continues with his allconference quarterback Jordan McLoud the protection's been outstanding I mean it's not like I'm feeling nervous I mean just think that last week they gave up one sack and 30 pass attempts that's incredible and today it's one out of 26 so out of the first 56 pass attempts only two sacks that is truly amazing Lincoln Perry who already has a touchdown today gets the carry he gets near the first down marker out to the 34 yd line and they are going to move the chains just from some context any offensive line coach in America would take one out of every 25 if you if you're giving up one sack out of every 25 attempts I mean you're probably the best pass blocking team in the country and right now they're far exceeding that big tle lock at the Right Guard you saw there number 73 most recently played at ULM this time great penetration by the defense Martavius French out of White Haven High School in Memphis making the big play for the tackle for loss well if fans are wondering why didn't a Road Runner defense play like this earlier well it's a different game now you understand that the Bobcats are trying to run the football and now you can Blitz to stop the run bring people off the edge and screw up the blocking schemes and that's going to allow for tfls post Sparks Jaden Williams the receivers to the bottom of the screen on second and long McLoud at time keeps the Play Alive gets rid of the football takes a big shot and that is why you would think as Brevin Randle slammed your All Conference quarterback to the turf a flag is on the field before long Jordan mccloud's day is going to be done yeah now that will get him out of there quick because I think the hit initially was good that was a little extracurricular after the hit that created the penalty and obviously that's just sort of a bush League Play by Wilkerson second straight week UTSA is had double digit penalties on Sportsman line number 12 defense 15 y in the previous automatic first down this is number 12 inial hit was good on Sports light conduct foul yep yeah the push to the back of the head I mean that that's ridiculous I mean you're in open field you're going to push the quarterback the back ahead because you're upset because things aren't gone your way to minut that's in that's that's just ridiculous he understands that and he'll hear all about it all week yep selfish Wilkerson the senior from Fort Worth and so it's first down McLoud hands it off this time hole on the right side opens up for Lincoln Perry to get five maybe six yards and into UTSA territory it's incumbent on both of these teams for the rest of this game to respect the game by playing it the way it's supposed to be played hard physical but legal regardless of what's happening on the scoreboard play the game the right way this is still a privilege that we have to play this game there are a lot of people unfortunately inflicted with a lot of stuff that won't allow them to play this game there people in young people in wheelchairs who would love to be out here playing this game respect the game play it the right way Sparks in motion going to run behind him not much room to run there wrick coming up from his free safety position to be on the stop see Owen Peewee come uh coming off a nice game in week one got the start today in place of Da Taylor and he has been in bolv for utsa's active player I enjoy watching him play plays hard he's had a nice game today and he's put together two good backto back weeks playing that money position that we talked about before and when Taylor comes back I I still suspect number nine Peewee will be on the field because he's earned the right to play No Doubt can't have enough uh depth can't have too much down up the middle did he get there Lincoln Perry did get a first down so again this abundance of running backs for Texas State ism motti is clear the headliner he is an All-American allpurpose player but behind torren Burgess Lincoln Perry Dion henkins we have seen seen heavy doses of them today and don't forget about Jaylen Jenkins the Washington State transfer there is a lot of depth in that offensive Back Field yeah gone to the days of the one guy carrying the ball going for 1,00 yards and really you only see the backup when he gets tired you need multiple guys to be efficient in the Run game in today's college football and that's exactly what Texas state has now Perry again coming back from a big knee injury showing that little bit of Wiggle to get himself another first down it's early in the season it's a long season and then if you're hoping and wishing to get in the playoff it could be even longer so the more guys you play early on not only does it keep your main players like motty who's the tip of this running game he's the tip of the Spear of this running game so you keep him fresh but also it gives experience to these backup players just in case something does happen crazy to any of these positions you got to guy with experience cuz you played him all year long and again motty ran for 156 week one against Lamar so again he is the headliner but he's got a lot of company back there including Perry takes the hand off again kicks it outside and he's got open space heading toward the end zone for a touchdown second long TD run of the day for Lincoln Perry that one covers 33 yds the bottom line is it doesn't really matter who you hand it to there are to run through and he barely got touched through the initial line of scrimmage and he's got enough speed to outrun the secondary a tired dejected secondary I like the slide at the end real cool doesn't increase the score a touchdown but no it'll give you some love back home I like it Mason Shipley the former Oklahoma State Cowboy so good kicking that football with yet another another P 49- 10 with 943 remaining in the fourth quarter a onesided I35 Showdown can I really do this it's what everyone asks at every new stage of life we say yes Sandy Spring Bank isn't just in the community we helped build it so we've got you covered if Big Time Players Big Time plays and Big Time personalities Sunday Night Baseball Sundays at 7 on ESPN let's check out today's best moment brought to you by AT&T 5G and for that it's not a moment it's moments for Jordan McLoud yeah big chunk moments they have been terrific with big play plays obviously the Run game has been great form two rushing touchdowns two passing touchdowns but let's just think about these chunk plays when it comes to passing that's 15 yards or more when it comes to rushing it's 10 yards or more they had they've had 14 chunk plays total that's an amazing job big plays can really swing momentum and obviously as you see swing that scoreboard yeah those two touchdown passes both to Chris Dawn and those were both big chunk plays he has been that guy here today Eddie Lee marberger who has had a good second half at quarterback connects on his first attempt here on this possession it's hard to manufacture drives it's hard to go the Long Way play in and play out series and series out so you need those big plays to set up certain things it's just too hard without screwing it up with penalties and such so big plays are very important for offense not just for the obvious touchdown reasons but also to create confidence get you in a rhythm and when you make big plays and score it avoids those series killing penalties drops and interceptions that you might get when the play count gets high after the catch by Jace Wilson the Run by Bryson Donald now the completion to the outside to DJ Allen but the ability to void continues to show up I mean this is just really a tremendous effort to get away from a rush that's been in everybody's face all day long but marberger he's got great legs and he's got a little bit of a steiness to himself as well marberger avoided the pressure coming by khil Alexander and that nearly completed the pass out near the 40 yd line but it'll bring up second out of 10 it takes some heart to hold on to this football against a rush like this and you holding the ball you're a mark man and he's doing a good job of invading holding the ball and trying to get it to receivers as they break free growing up in DC did you guys play kill the quarterback no we play throwback tackle or throw up tackle you throw the ball up and everybody whoever whoever catches it the entire group is going to get him and if you get tackled you got to throw it kind of backwards but you got to throw it up and there were business decisions being made if you want to touch that ball once again a miscommunication DJ Allen was going on a fly never turned to see the pass was behind him yeah just the Reps the Reps aren't there it's hard to have continuity between a trigger man and your receivers when he's usually throwing against the scout team defense or throwing with the second and third wide receivers third down and 10 setting up the screen bobbled and not caught looked like he might have had a chance to make something out of nothing but unable was the true freshman will Henderson the third to make that play yeah they they like him a lot they think he's got great upside it could be a tremendous player he's the second or I should say State runner up in the 100 meter dash R 104 and when you second in the state of Texas in the 100 meters you can run pretty good yeah and so he had an opportunity there but that's kind of been what the day's been like for UTSA almost kind of but not quite Cole Wilson back to receive the punt which is a good one fair catch at the 14 yd line and so the Bobcats will come back out well in the Sunbelt conference this year app state is picked to win the East Texas State picked to win the west and the Bobcats have certainly had that look about them well we are going to move over to ESPN news in just a few seconds cuz we want to get you to the start of the Vanderbilt All forign State game on time so will'll send you to Dudley field at First Bank Stadium Kevin Fitzgerald and Charlie Strong will have the call for you once again for us if you want to watch the end of the game switch over to ESPN news welcome to ESPN college football Prime Time presented by Dr Pepper you are watching the SCC on ESPN and welcome to Nashville and First Bank Stadium home to the vanderville comers they're feeling great after a giant week one win they host alorn State out of the swack today in Nashville and we are glad that you are with us welcome upstairs with the former National Championship wood and Coach Charlie Strong strong Kevin Fitzgerald with you so it was a statement win for this Vanderbilt team they beat a very quality Virginia Tech program last week in overtime they hadn't beaten a power Conference team with the noncon in seven years they did that last week coach and there is a palpable excitement now surrounding the program well it was an exciting win for them and you look at it you talking about a team now with a whole new attitude a whole new belief they'll be fun to watch tonight the belief is the mindset around here after that 34 27 win in overtime against Virginia Tech so Clark ley's Squad is feeling really good there is a freshness as you mentioned surrounding this program today it faces alorn State that's its week 2 challenge out of the swack this Braves club piloted by first year head coach Cedric Thomas projected to win the west division in the swack they certainly have their hands full today so it's a Touchback and all corn State the one the toss selected to receive begins on offense we are glad that you are with us today in Nashville and so the quarterback who makes a second straight start for these Braves that's Tyler Mak coach he's a red Shure Jr started at Missouri the St Louis native is a starting QB for the first time in his career it really is and the good thing about him is he can move the ball with his legs and then you're going to see dun also come in they will likely use several quarterbacks today to your point the first down handoff is to their starting tailback that's jakorian Su high expectations for the red shirt sophomore he was taken down by Brian Longwell so making in that week one loss to uabb only threw seven passes and ran for 37 yards on the ground of the three quarterbacks at all corn state will likely play today he might have the biggest arm of the bunch no gain there on the second down keeper well you look at this defense and it's they just coming back from last week they just adding on to it cuz there's a big play right there a tackle for a loss A Vanderbuilt defense that played with great physicality especially up front on the defensive line remember they held Virginia Tech to just 75 yards rushing last week and so making in the shotgun now there comes Longwell on the blitz making able to get that one away to the tight end tarius Griffin picks up a handful but sets up fourth and long well you look at the back here coming on the pressure and it's one thing about this defense it's going to make you you you're going to have to find the checks you're going to have to try to find where they are cuz they're going to bring pressure each and every play and they're going to force the quarterback to get the ball out of his hands so Elijah Gorman the sophomore from Wisconsin who punted nine times last week and that lost to UAB ready to send this one away Martell height is going to be vandy's primary punt return man this season and so the commodor will set up shop just across the 30 yd line and so it it's been a whole lot of Pavia pandemonium pandemonium I should say Diego Pavia is a starting quarterback this year for vanderbild coming out of high school he was a state champion wrestler had zero FBS offers winds up at a junior college in Roswell New Mexico after leading them to a Jo National Championship Jerry kill over at New Mexico State takes a chance on him brings him in two-year starter leads him to 10 wins a season ago and Clark Lee and this Vandy staff brought him in after he hit the transfer portal this off season the fifth year senior from Albuquerque New Mexico has a proven track record of winning where he has been over the last few years as you saw first out carries to Cedric Alexander for a gain of three what you think you like about this offense Kevin is it's an option offense so they going to put a lot of pressure on the perimeter and they're going to you got to be option sound where you talk you got to take the dive you got to take the quarterback you got to take the pitch and a lot of times it's going to be with the motion and PVE uh has no problems keeping it you see how Ive he's been 55 touchdowns in his 28 games as an FBS quarterback on the ground last week they ran for over a 100 yards Pavia straight ahead on the keeper that time picks up five good job of keeping it and then dipping back up inside but you see their motion coming around from the top and that was going to be his pitch man but he cut it back inside coach look what he did on the ground last year as a senior at New Mexico Co State fourth most rushing yards of all quarterbacks at the FBS level so you know he has that toughness and he don't mind pulling the ball down and taking off with it he is proven to be a Fearless playmaker and he did just that and the significant win against Virginia Tech last week Cole Spence came in motion Pavia Sid steps one and he Jes his way across the 50 yd line gain of 13 just stay on schedule you know that's a third and one the offense stays on schedule and you're going to get to short yardage H the play right here it's good by H Pavia and the ends up cutting it back behind the linebacker oh you saw the athleticism there that Juke to free himself up for a few more yards couple of tailbacks on either side of Pavia AJ Newberry into the game as well he's on pavia's right hip Pavia keeps and he gets leveled after a very short gain just a backer being aggressive running downhill running behind his backs there a good job by Edwards just coming down hill yeah that's staman Edwards the senior from Hollandale Mississippi IPP laid a hit on the fifth year senior so Pavia and Vanderbilt are out across Midfield second and 10 coming up for the captain the third here's Alexander Straight Ahead off the right side and he gains six so now you got you go third down here so it get you allow you two downs to get the first down and look where the ball is Vanderbilt moving a little quickly here play action to the boundary and there's Quincy Skinner Jr who caught a touchdown pass in the win last week well you look at it's it's third and five you got to be able to close the cushion there Skinner sits it down hobby makes the throw a good catch and then he turns to get back up field for a few yards yeah Skinner was Pav's favorite Target a week ago he targeted him six times caught the touchdown in the first half of that game remember Vandy they jumped out to a 17 nothing lead in the first half ultimately took a 17-3 lead into the break against Virginia Tech that was critical and helping him start one and0 Chase Gillespie now into the game he's behind Pavia one of the many tailbacks we'll see so here's that option look Pavia pitches it oh a dangerous pitch but Alexander is able to go up for it and haul it in but but that's what happens in the option game it's just numbers and he had he had the the pitch open so he made the guy who's responsible for a quarterback took him and then he pitches the ball but like you said he's just got to be a little more crisp with that pitch so remember both of vy's quarterbacks last year AJ Swan and Ken seals they hit the transfer portal immediately after the season finishes up so Clark Lee's got to overhaul the offense a little bit well second and short here you may want to take a shot here you got second and short Kevin May well get on top Pavia 12 of 16 through the air last week from the 24 fandy moving swiftly on this drive Pavia spins across the line to gain and a whole swarm of Braves are able to finally throw him down but it's enough to move the sticks D and mckelton combine on the tackle Vanderbilt last week coach they possessed the ball for nearly 35 minutes and that's exactly what Clark Lee wants to do with this offense first year offensive coordinator Tim Beck they want to choose some clock and that's what this offense allows you to do where you can eat up the clock and keep the ball away uh from the from the opponent's offense there goes Alexander and a whistle and a timeout taken by all corn state with 738 to go in this first it is their first so Vanderbilt on the Move driving deep into allt State territory on their first offensive Drive every business is special to its owners clients and Community but your business is specialized so at Sandy Spring Bank you have a banker and team devoted to you we know the ins and outs of the many Industries here in the DMV we'll customize your Solutions whether it's financing and The Unbelievable welcome to the 2024 NFL season Jason seriously I feel like we're living in a movie love you guys Formula 1 is go oh it's contact Formula 1 at his absolute finest oh my Lord this is Formula 1 this is Formula 1 Welcome to the best season of the year football Welcome to the comebacks the Stars the exclusives the comedy and the best booth in the game is that a new tie sure is welcome to a dynasty in the making a simping rivalry for the ages welcome to the 2024 NFL season what are you doing seriously these are my buttons only I press these buttons quite a great deal of excitement on the west end here there's Vanderbilt's campus off to the right downtown Nashville in the distance after vandy's week one win over Virginia Tech an emphatic statement Victory they are on the move here on their opening drive with all corn state in town ninth play of the drive is coming up first ever meeting of these two teams by the way all corn stayed visiting it's second of a back toback here against FBS opponents opened up last week against UAB here's a first and 10 for Diego Pavia he is the SEC offensive player of the week who guided Vanderbilt to that Victory last week it's a short gain of three Cedric Alexander on the carry if you look at keev every play they're moving somebody so they're trying to distract to put the defenders in a conflict with just motion so Cedric Thomas's team they certainly have their hands full today Thomas took over as a head coach replacing Fred McNair in in the off season that's Steve MC McNair's brother by the way spent eight years guiding this program LED them to great success they tied for first in the swack West Division last year although the two parted ways Cedric Thomas takes over after spending the last couple of years as the defensive coordinator there's another short gain on second down Pia found Alexander out of the back field well you look at coach Thomas and the record that he's has a track record where he's been and he's done a good job everywhere he's been and right now It's All About Him developing these players and I know this is going to be a tough game for him tonight but you like the challenge a a head coach once again you're right on Coach he was the head man at Arkansas Pine Bluff for a couple of years and then afterward at Mississippi Delta Community College as recent as 2021 and even considering the head coach change he retained many of the coaches and coordinators wanted to keep some staff continuity after a fine set and four season a year ago on Third and six Pavia pitch it out to Alexander keeps his feet but only momentarily and he's going to wind up a handful of yards short of the first down so it sets up about fourth and five that's a really good job by the defense I mean they brought pressure is third and six in that M middle and here here comes the pressure right here the guy does a great job of playing the quarterback forcing the ball with pitch and the pursuit getting to it yeah that is the challenge today identifying the pitch man if you will so here's Brock Taylor who nailed a 53 Y and a 43 y last week in the win against Virginia Tech he's got a big leg and the sophomore has got a 35 y here to put the commodor on the board so a fine opening drive they choose some clock they move it nicely and with 515 to go in the first Clark Le team has a three nothing lead every business is special to its owners clients and Community but your business is specialized so at Sandy Spring Bank you have a banker and team devoted to you we know the ins and outs of the many Industries here in the DMV we'll customize your Solutions whether it's financing and acquisition commercial mortgage or equipment because ultimately business banking is personal when what's your next the US Open August 26th through September 8th on ESPN can't the WNBA on ESPN and ABC all season you feel that that buzz yeah you can't get enough the undeniable electricity baby it's the Talk of the Town you got to love it the WNBA is back and we can't get enough the WNBA on ESPN and ABC all season ESPN college football prime time is presented by ice cold Dr Pepper college football it's a pepper thing and in part by McDonald's so Vanderbilt gets the scoring started they use up almost 8 minutes of the first quarter clock 12 Play 53 yd drive that ends in a 35 yd field goal for Brock Taylor this is a coach you mentioned it before there's a lot of freshness surrounding this program in terms of personnel maybe expectations there were some coaching changes that Clark Ley made in the off season as well so now the very thoughtful insightful intellectual 42-year-old from right here in Nashville and his fourth year as a head coach at his Alma moer he takes over as the defensive coordinator he's called the defensive plays this year coach and you look at last week the way to the defense performed it's all about his personality when you're a defensive coordinator you want the defense to take on your personality and that's what this defense is doing right now he taking on his personality last week he really praised the physicality of his team's defense and it's he said it's reinvigorated him taking over the DC duties but it's certainly it's a challenge it is balancing both duties if you will it's a major challenge cuz when you're a defensive coordinator you're standing there you're trying to call the defense you concerned about that so you want to make sure that everybody's the line right so this is alorn State second offensive possession Tyler Mak is still operates a quarterback for the Braves and that's a gain of nearly 10 on the play he found his one of his favorite targets it's Tavarius gri Griffin who's the top returning receiver for this allar State team this year just to leak out into the flat quarterback runs a naked boot throws it out there toing Griffin is very Dynamic he's going to do a lot of damage in the swag the All Conference veteran has his second Catch of the Day in a lot of speaking of Defense in a lot of ways that allord stayed holding Vandy to three was a big defensive win as well big defensive win for for all hold him to three points there Mak to his tail back and nowhere to go in the back field Brandon fontanet with the stop let's flash it back to a week ago this Vanderbilt defense where they uh tipping balls and if you look at that defenses they're coming from everywhere and they're showing pressure getting knocking the ball out of a getting sacks and that's what you really like when the defense it's Up Tempo now and and guys are making plays that was Glenn SE Brooks who picked that pass off L of zunk had a couple of sacks they held Virginia Tech to just 75 yds rushing that's it so on second and 12 what does mon do here the red shirt Jr from St Louis uses his legs picks up about six he had to on that play cuz everybody was covered if you look down the field no one was open this what we you know that's what we call a coverage sack when he he took off running with the ball so sets up third and manageable for all corn state that had to replace a whole lot of production on the offensive side after the seven- win season a year ago third down now you always expect pressure here now it's third down play clock training Mak stepping up Mak is he feeling the pressure intercepted CJ Taylor carrying a man with them taken down inside the 20 VY in with a great field position after the pick just look at the backer here ke come on the Bliss he jumped over the back he jumps over the back right down the middle coming right down the pipe here he comes right here he jumps over the back hurdles it calls his pressure the ball is tip goes up intercepts it takes it in for a score really good job CJ Taylor that's your guy the senior Captain with his first interception of the Season he picked off two last year and you think about ronal is like their nickel guy he comes in on the nickel package just an incredible athleticism that you spotlighted there from raldi and mon just did not escape the pressure in time all right we going to have a little pass here to the end zone it's caught Cole Spence on the receiving end of his fellow tight end Eli Stowers the former quarterback into the end zone for six what to play it in the Red Zone you're going to get some type of trickery it's usually where you get the double reverses and everything so's a there's a pass right there double reverse pass thr guys wide open into the End Zone on the first play after the interception it's Eli Stowers again he had a 42 yard catch last week the tight end it was a converted tight end he used to be a quarterback hit Spence for his first ever College reception it's a touchdown take a look at this Taylor is the man on the defensive side who picks the pass off and it sets up stour to spits vanderville into the end zone up 10 nothing they your the they by can I really do this it's what everyone asks at every new stage of life we say yes Sandy Spring Bank isn't just in the community we helped build it so we've got you covered if you want to buy a house or improve the one you've got let's grow your business because that helps the all these great doctors are on Zach do Dr Taylor's a great listener me well who do you like Dr Stafford is available today super understanding and girl he has seen way worse thanks rash you've got more options than you know book now I feel like we're living in a movie love you guys Formula 1 is go oh it's contact Formula One and his absolute finest oh this is Formula 1 he you can't get enough the WNBA on ESPN and ABC all season next Saturday the SCC on ABC college football triple header it features LSU in Columbia to take on South Carolina Texas A&M at Florida follows at 3:30 Eastern and then Georgia now winners of 41 straight regular season games they're Lexington to face Kentucky here in Nashville Vanderbilt is ahead 10 zip after a marvelously executed trick play coach tight end to tight end here what did you see well what's happen with the option game you put so much pressure on you put so much pressure on the on the Defenders so here he comes right now he he slips down then pitches the ball and it throws into a wide open stop I mean he sitting there well style was throw at dispense and touchdown Eli Stowers remember the former quarterback he and Diego Pavia they were recruited to New Mexico State ahead of the 22 season they're both quarterbacks Tim Beck the offensive coordinator he goes Stowers he's just too athletic to back up Pavia to be on the sideline so they transition him to tight end but he's still got a great arm new quarterback for all Court State that's Xavier vaugh short gain on the handoff pick up of maybe three so coach a quarterback change here for all corn State we expected this and so now you have vaugh in there well you expected but you didn't expect it so early you look you're still in the first quarter and then you make the change but they got to somehow generate some offense here and try to move the ball down the field vau a 6E senior last last year was a starter at a division 2 school that's Lincoln University in Missouri so he has starting experience handoff up the middle and a gain of one for jakorian Su that's well we talk about how aggressive the defense is just build a wall that's all we're doing right now the noart just building the wall up front with that front four there you go third down so a big down you want to get off the field on defense offense need to find somehow find a way to get a first down to keep the ball moving yeah and and here I mean I mean I may disguise it I mean fake the Bliss and then run out we'll see what we get here they're starting to pinch in yep they do fake that pressure so a lot of time here for vaugh who's open throw is high and incomplete flag came in there from the near sideline our head referee is Daniel drro today prior to the pass holding Defense number 30 10yd penalty from the previous spot automatic first down and so that holding penalty on trudell Barry is going to move the sticks here for allor state if you watch Barry he's right here the receiver is coming off the ball and and now here he don't have to grab him at all there's no way for him there's nowhere to throw the football and he gets his hand on him to get a hold and call yeah you saw him hooked the receiver there with his right arm vau was looking for Diablo McGee that time he finds him here M trying to shuffle away from a couple of jerseys gain of one and again the the vanderbelt certainly has the athleticism advantage today and so that'll be the challenge for the Braves fast quick aggressive on defense look at there you throw you throw a just a bubble screen out there and I mean the defense is all over it second and seven for alorn state VA last year threw for more than 1500 yards in 11 games at Lincoln University rifles this one that's caught over the middle and Caleb Anderson is taken down very close to the line to gain as the first quarter comes to a close so the commodor feeling really good after that weak one win against Virginia Tech they're off to a 10 nothing lead a field goal and then a little tight end to tight end touchdown pass the exclamation point the first he may not turn out to be a black belt or play Carnegie Hall he'll take the chicken finger but with the money you earn from your PenFed checking and savings accounts he's growing up look at him your goal of supporting his dreams will always be worth it I got it for with Chevy trucks be ready for adventure with power you can count on capability that doesn't compromise a hard working EV with more range than any competitor and the potential to take you anywhere it's Chevy truck season get 1.9% financing plus make no monthly payments for 90 days on all 2024 Silverado 1500 pickups chevret together let's drive ESPN plus it's the spot for the NCAA MLB UFC ESPN plus it's in the ESPN app I'm on own it yeah I own it welcome to the best season of the year football Welcome to The Comebacks the Stars the exclusives the comedy and the best booth in the game is that a new timee sure is welcome to a dynasty in the making ass simply rivalry for the ages welcome to the 2024 NFL season what are you doing seriously these are my buttons only I press these buttons you're watching the SEC on ESPN welcome back to ESPN college football Prime Time presented by Dr Pepper one quarter in the books Vanderbilt with the 10 nothing lead Twilight here in Nashville back at First Bank Stadium good view here at some of the renovations that are ongoing on the opposite side of the field the South End Zone that one is one is finished over on the other side and alorn state takes a timeout before their third and one play so it's the second timeout Cedric Thomas has had to use today how about this for giant upsets Northern Illinois with a stunning KO of Notre Dame they hold the Irish coach to just 14 points it's the program's first win against an AP top 10 opponent first ever well you look at Notre Dame last week that go to A&M and beat them and then then they bounce back at home and lose the NIU yeah that is that is stunning Riley Leonard again the transfer from duke he threw two interceptions alln State's going to be stopped here on fourth down on third down I should say that'll set up fourth and three and if you look at the the backer shoots through same thing backer blitzes through it's third and short and they throwing for a loss it's a really good job by Coley this Vanderbilt defense that lost a few starters from a year ago brought back a handful of others there are plenty of returning commodor that are elevating into starting roles and we were talking to one of them that's Langston Patterson yesterday says there is just a different feeling with this group this year compared to the year prior flag on this punt Height's going to let it bounce and alorn state it's going to let it roll down as far as it possibly can and down at the half yd line we'll check on the flag though well you got to feel that punt I mean you're standing there on the T you got have to feel that punt cuz look where the ball ends up but depending on where the flag is where it may come back but look where the ball ends up how about a 53 yd punt as it stands now for Elijah Gorman coach after all that additional yardage and like you said additional yardage yep where it should have never happened illegal formation kicking team number four went from covered to uncovered 5 yd penalty from the previous spot fourth down and so that's going to unfortunately for Elijah Gorman that's going to nullify the 53 Y and he's going to have to head back out there and try and do this again so a do over perhaps for Martell he so you look at number four right here he's on he's on the line of scrimmage so he covers up the guy and then he he legal formation he's got to move up on the ball so nice job from our officiating crew to recognize that one so a do over for height Gorman gets this one away there's the sophomore from Rome Georgia takes it straight up the middle it's a couple of blocks now cuts out the numbers heid he rolls through the punter gorin though is able to ultimately force him out of bounds but look but look how many yards he saved right there Kevin he saved 54 yards because he returned it we got a punter making a tackle after a 36- yd return this at crucial stages business owners ask themselves how am I going to do this it's not not about doubt it's about Clark yeah you can't get enough we plan on putting on a show the WNBA is back and we can't get enough the WNBA on ESPN and ABC All Season the WNBA on ESPN and ABC All Season the US Open August 26 through September 8th on ESPN time sh scor M go if there's a chance for what you hope for and you dream for and for how can you stand for all right let's take a look at our fansville college football update brought to you by Dr Pepper Quinn ERS and Texas walking of the big house coach and KO 10th ranked Michigan 31 to2 ERS was on the money today largely Texas has an excellent football team and ERS has been there he's been in the system and he knows how to move the ball score points so vanderbild out across Midfield at second make it third offensive possession Diego Pavia improvising here it's the SEC player of the week and he finds his Target on the sideline that time that's Daren Wy who was injured and missed the opener last week his first catch of the year well he and he makes a fake he gets outside the defense and anytime a quarterback gets outside the defense their percentage goes up and in a hit I mean the guy comes from the backside and gets a good hit on it and that is what Pavia can do he can improvise he can do things off script just like that Wy in motion now to the top of your screen AJ Newberry is the tailback Newberry a patient run and he picks up a handful gain of six good job by the guard pulling to the outside right there blocking the backer and the back just hits it back up inside yeah Newberry coach he's the sophomore from Texas only one carry in the opener he is certainly aiming to take a step forward in his sophomore season with Alexander it's a younger running back group with that duo but what you like here the offens is stand on schedule that's second short now they're back to First and 10 from the 33 looked like there was some pre- snap movement and likely a false start here on the offense offense number 52 5yd penalty remain first down so that's Keo Wesley this is an area where they excelled last week no no pre- snap penalties of the win against Virginia Tech and and if I want to make it right I think koo's a quick guard that's what's different about this offensive line you got guard quick tackle strong guard strong tackle so that way when when they line up somebody's going to line up to the tight IDE and that you could switch your lines so they're not always right and left they will be switching Personnel on that line this season Pavia keeps it Pavia rangle down after a gain of six on the play but but when we talk about that offensive line while go cap there not many teams do it because usually when usually with the offensive line the guys are always going to say my right tackle is my right tackle my left tackle is my left tackle but by switching it you allow both play both sides and you can you you bounce it's all balanced and the defense can't get a hit on you it's Unique it's not that common very unique yeah Pavia today he thrown three passes he's three for three 26 yards on the ground Pavia fires to the outside that pass is caught by lock fungi the first year comador with his first Catch of the Day no it that's a great job of him getting rid of the ball cuz you bring bring outside pressure the pressure is coming and he releases with Edison coming see the pressure then jav that's a good job of him staying in there making that throw he has staying in there and taking a hit after the play well his toughness and his his competitive Spirit it is praised by seemingly everybody every one of his teammates as coaches under Center here hands off to Newberry Newberry has enough for the first down and so Vanderbilt moves inside the Red Zone but you look at right here you go two tight ends you go eye backs I mean how much do you see eyeb backs you you thought about eyeb backs so you know that ball is going coming down H and you're going to be physical up front and that line up in it again Newberry the tail back once again Newberry escapes one Newberry on his feet inside the five and so they go back to back there like you said under Center and a hand off to Newberry and and you know what we may get the same formation so you get unbalance to the to the left side to the right side of the offensive line same thing here it goes again and I backs you don't you don't see this in college ball not many teams after a gain of 13 they fake it to Newberry PV nobody to beat it's a touchdown the fake out leads to the Diego P at touchdown and a little Commodore leap cuz you you know what happened you had it all set up everybody you can't you ran it twice bam power downhill then all of a sudden you run a naked boot touchdown his rushing touchdown a week ago in overtime proved to be the difference that's what put Vanderbilt ahead for good against Virginia Tech his second rushing score of the season oh they kept it on the ground effectively that drive and Tim Becky engineered a fine touchdown drive that time well you're looking at Kev it's just downhill physical ball and P uh just nobody to beat on the way into the end zone for his second rushing score of the Season at crucial stages business owners ask themselves how am I going to do this it's not about doubt it's about opportunity when you have the right partner at Sandy Spring Bank we celebrate entrepreneur big you know you get up there got there pretty easily Diego Pavia the fifth year senior from Albuquerque New Mexico he is having a whole lot of fun here these first couple weeks as Vanderbilt starting quarterback there's Terk Le on the return so remember week one of the NFL slate it starts tomorrow we got Sunday NFL Countdown kicking things off for you at 10:00 a.m. eastern time keep in mind Troy Nashville you see the reflection off the building just very pretty it's beautiful so Rogers of course back under center after taking just uh playing four four plays last year in his Jets debut all corn state back on offense here ex Xavier vaugh under Center for a short gain though trouble some openers evidently for Rogers the last few years you like you want him to bounce back because you like to see the Jets have a good year and also you like for for him to have a good year also so is going to be really fun to watch well high expectations for Bree Hall by the way in that back field yeah cuz you look at the Jets they have a great defense well both of them have a great defense here so it's going to be really a fun game the Jets will be here facing the Titans week two incomplete pass that time V was looking for om Maran Blakes over the middle little unsturdy pass that he couldn't quite handle it as he was sliding down so third and 10 for the Braves well it's just hard for Alor to get any type of rhythm going at all and now they just as third down so here we come with our with our dime package so this is the pressure package here so you're going to get coverage and pressure getting the third down noise here it comes hey everybody's getting the chair and up on the feet play clock is winding down they recognize it and Cedric Thomas uses his third timeout here of the first half with 831 to go the Braves need a minute they've got a third down on the other side here after the timeout at crucial stages business owners ask themselves how am I going to do this it's not about ever again in your life it's a one ofone on September 14th at spear the greatest live sporting event of all time let's go baby ESPN plus it's the spot for the NCAA MLB UFC 30 for 30s all your favorite teams on any screen anywhere you need ESPN plus it's in the ESPN so this season all stay will celebrate every field goal and extra point made by participating universities by making a donation to The University's General scholarship fund so thank you all state since 2005 Under The Lights First Bank Stadium Nashville Vanderbilt with the 17 nothing lead approaching the halfway point of this second quarter Xavier vaugh rolling the pocket and that pass is dropped you had tarius Griffin there on the sideline and so fourth down coming up well even when him sprinting out here and trying to get a ball to Griffin in the flat they wouldn't have had enough yardage to even get the first down because the pursuit was coming from the VY defense and so Elijah Gorman is ready to punt this one back to mortell height okay third punt to the day for Gorman height return room 36 yards this last time on the field height spins away from a couple of men and crosses the 35 so there's a 30 yd return for the sophomore from Rome Georgia so this vanderbild offense if they're up 7 nothing remember the excitement a week ago it's an exciting time and an exciting game ready to rock SP it down and intercepted Glenn sebr Pia with a shotgun Hees it toward the end zone oh he was there for the touchdown to the front pylon in another touchdown what Diego pav is doing you cannot coach Pia the keeper to the edge cuts it back for the touchdown he it to the end zone at the back and it's incomplete Vanderbilt with the upset in week one the 3427 overtime win against Virginia Tech it was one of the more significant wins for the program in several years pav on the keeper for a handful there on first down I mean that that in a lot of ways it could very much wind up being a season alter ing win for Clark Le's team last time they beat a A ranked opponent was two years ago against Kentucky and so look at that game in 2017 the 14-7 win against Kansas state that was the last time Vandy had beaten a power Conference team in the non-conference seven years had passed and Clark Lee talked quite a bit in in the days following about his team's fight and resilience after they fell behind late in the fourth quarter here's Stowers who threw a touchdown pass now he's got his first Mak a second Catch of the Day gain of seven well you talk about ke they fell behind so they were up 17 then they go down seven and then they missed a a field goal to go win the game then they had to go in overtime but that just shows you the resiliency of that team there was just a different feeling and energy on that sideline we talked to pavio we talked to a couple of players that this was that was not a game they were going to let slip away you know a lot of that belief it it starts and ends with their starting quarterback Alexander able to swing around a couple of blockers picks up eight say second is short here going bee of a change but when you talking about just the team you you think about what P he they all gravitate to him yeah yeah voted a captain his first and only season here in Nashville this is Alexander trying to weave around a couple of tacklers that's enough to pick up the first down do is the and to tackle him move the sticks you know when the ball gets down in the Red Zone I I always think about the quarterback because he comes alive look at the last touchdown the quarterback he runs a naked Boot and scores but he it's you you don't want a lot of people touching the ball because you don't want any turnovers so the quarterback especially with this option game he's he's a guy that comes alive and a guy you have to really watch proba a last here at New Mexico State threw for nearly 3,000 yards rushed of course for almost a th000 he is a playmaker up the middle and there's a flag near the line of scrimmage if you look up they got their heavy Personnel in so now they got three tight ends in the game so it goes with their heavy personnel and they're just going to come off and just power and just run the ball personal foul blocking below the waist Defense number seven the penalty being forced half the distance to the goal automatic first down and that was Kavon Henderson the sophomore from Antioch Tennessee take a look at the left side here look at the left side of line here it is is coming downhill he ends up cutting back underneath it and and secondary end up making up tackle so now it's first and goal for the commodor asz they are trying to go up big here late in the first half look at the formation yep Pavia under Center again the tail back is Alexander plows ahead for the touchdown Cedric Alexander finds the end zone once again his third score of the Year well you look at you go high backs again while they go they wearing the neck and boot this time they just run a lead play full back just goes right behind him Alexander gets downhill runs behind his pads touchdown here it is right here coming off kicking out back gets his pads down runs through the defender touchdown good job by Alexander big big block there really really good block just come coming downhill right now and so after Alexander coach found the end zone twice last week he's got his third touchdown of the season and Vanderbilt has a 24 nothing lead with 502 to go in this first half they have controlled just about every aspect thus far what the L not getting the credit that was Wesley right there pulling around and and and uh having a kickout block look who's on the sidelines by the way this season coach it's Jerry kill who was hired after he retired after guiding New Mexico state to a 10- win season a year ago Clark Lee adds him to the staff he's a offensive advisor so he coached Diego Pavia the last couple of years and so he is he joined him yeah Jerry and I go back to his Southern Illinois days he became the head coach there and he he's had a great career as the head coach was at New Mexico and he was his he he he had pby there then he ended up coming here and then you know Lo beh hold you know a few months later pby ends up there but he's a great person and and you know the he's done with with Clark is that he's been a guy Clark needs somebody to bounce off him he bounces it off with Jerry Clark was telling us about his relationship with Jerry he's been an encouraging voice I'm not sure I saw a fair catch signal here from alorn State and so they're going to have to set up shop here at the 5 yd line stop break there for allc state to be backed up now look where this bounces didn't he fa catch it and he just didn't catch the ball yeah I I I don't know if I saw the fair catch signal and so therefore alorn state has to start their Drive well
