Insects, mold found at Virginia Boar's Head plant linked to deadly listeria outbreak

Alexa Liacko in for Alex Livingston, the nationwide listeria outbreak involving Boar's Head Deli meats is being traced back Spurs Virginia. >> 9 people are reported dead in over 50 hospitalized due to contaminated meat. >> National correspondent Jamal Andres joining us now, the latest on the are really scary A scary scary story here. And a well-known brand and design things are contained just yet. What do we know this morning? >> Yeah, Disturbing as it gets. Not only because of the graphic details inside of that plant, but also the period of time between when some of these issues were discovered and when this plant was shut down, give you some background. The boy plant in Jarrett, Virginia, as you laid out, found their first instance of a federal rule violation in August of 2023 Net Plant wasn't shut down until this summer over that period of time. There were 69 instances of federal violations in terms of the conditions that you are supposed to keep that food. And this is where you get some of those disturbing details that you probably over the course of the last 24 hours. Discolored meat, insect infestation inside of the plant, black patches of mold. Late it smells inside of coolers inside the plant and even blood buildup in some places. All of this, of course, leading to those 9 deaths and over 50 hospitalizations and 18 states across the country. I want to show you this map. This is the large scale outbreak affecting mostly the east side of the country. States like Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New York, several others across the country. The company ultimately recalled more than 7 million pounds of meat products. Even though they did. vast majority of the issue seems to be with the liverwurst product. And here's some things that you should look for. If you are concerned that you have contaminated borth it inside of your refrigerator, elected grocery store. The first product label, 1, 2, 6, 1, suit limit that number 1, 2, 6, 1, If you see that, don't pick it up. Throw it out if you've got it in the refrigerator. Also products produced between May July. 29, if they have assailed it October of 2024. Again, that is safe than sorry in terms of using that kind of product. And point is closed for the foreseeable future. They will open again until they can prove to federal regulators that they can produce a safe product. But here's a bit of what the company boys that had to say about lethal infestation, that they have this outbreak that has made its way across the country. Quote, We are conducting an extensive investigation working closely with the USDA and government regulatory agencies as well as with the industry's leading food safety experts to determine how are liverwurst produce. Jarrett Virginia facility was adulterated and to prevent it from happening again. Just as overall point. Listeria infections affect about 1600 Americans every year about 260 people die every year. According to the CDC from these kinds of infections. But really important to remember if you are over 65, that is when you are most at risk for dealing with one of these.
