uh she's going all in on this this is not just a for now kind of thing uh the NFL season begins this evening the Ravens and the Chiefs kick off the NFL season Adam tier ESPN Chiefs reporter was on Amber and Ian last night 7p to 10p Eastern time and had this to say about what happens if Kansas City does not free P this year as crazy as this might sound um you know if they don't go out and get their three peat it might be looked at as a disappointment after win in the last two you know so uh I think a little bit I think they've got the right kind of people to handle that kind of pressure so uh you know maybe if anybody can do it it's this group but yeah I do think it's you know they're they're they're going for history and I think everybody's going to look back at a disappointing season if they don't get it they've won two in a row are they playing with house money or is this a disappointing oh no no no no they're not playing with house money they're not playing with it I mean it it is on the board that this is the best team that Patrick Mahomes has had around him since he became the starter with the Kansas City Chiefs and the reason why I lean that way is because of how good the defense is now I get it they lost lerus sne but you're still talking about a top five defense from a year ago in yards and points they they still have two allpro players and Chris Jones and Trent McDuffy that that that that anchor that defense you look at the revamp receiving core they used a first round pick on Xavier worthy they got rayi rice coming back they've got Hollywood Brown once he gets Hy not to mention Travis Kelce and in the offensive line like I I mean Joe Toney Creed Humphrey Trey Smith they're all in the conversation for best at their respective positions so I I just I look at the totality of it and I do think that this Stacks up with some of the best teams that Patrick Mahomes has had since he's became the starter in Kansas City and through that lens I would view it as a disappointment if they didn't get back to the championship rounds and they weren't in the mix to get uh another Super Bowl and to actually be the first team in the Super Bowl era to three peat the more Su the more success that you accumulate the higher the bar is the standard gets raised time and time again we look at Lamar Jackson you've won two MVPs okay where's the Super Bowl we we view you differently if you don't match a certain measure of success the same thing with the Kansas City Chiefs yeah they won back-to-back Super Bowls but they have history on line now for the three Pat I think that we might not view them differently if they don't get it done but their standard is winning a Super Bowl and that's it we when we talk about them the regular season doesn't matter with Kansas City no we know that you just have to get into the playoffs we assume that the conference Championship game is going to continue to run through Arrowhead in the AFC and it's super bowl or bust for them so I think they actually have a tremendous amount of pressure on them knowing what's on the line see I I probably am warped by the Patriots belich Brady glasses that I look at things through but I actually think last year was the perfect regular season for them I think having those struggles in the regular season relying on the defense truly help them in the postseason MH I'm I am going to be actually nervous about Kansas City winning it all this year if they are too dominant in the regular season and I know that sounds ridiculous and I know they've been there and done that but if they have a 16- one 15-2 nobody's close to them kind of regular season I don't know that that always sets you up for the postseason I just don't I've seen it too many time like the years six of them that New England won the Super Bowl they weren't like dominant and perfect all the time in the regular season they used the regular season as almost training camp to get ready for the postseason now Kansas City may be so good and they may have the same exact approach and it just results in wins where sometimes New England would have a loss here loss there whatever it is or you knew that's not that's not what they're really doing that's just getting them ready for later you said that that Kansas City CC may have the best regular season team that they've had ever in the Patrick Mahomes era I want to ask you about your career specifically was the Super Bowl team you won with the Giants actually the best team you ever played on or the most accomplished no and the most accomplished the best team I ever played on was the 2007 Dallas Cowboys where they had 13 pro bowlers that was the best collection what Happ playoff that was the best collection of talent but we were one and done in the playoffs but here's the problem with the Kansas City Chiefs I mean when you look at some of the regular seasons that they've been able to put together the 2022 season comes to mind they went 14 and3 during that season had the number one offense in yards and points Patrick Mahomes threw for over 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns and they won the Super Bowl so like we've seen it when they they look like you know one of those teams that's a buzz saw ripping through the NFL during the regular season and they actually do that in the postseason as well so I get where you're coming from you want them to have some type of adversity you want to see some strain because that creates the type of the type of you guys four in a row but that creates the type of football the type of formula that a team can lean on once you get to the playoffs and you're playing against better competition right exactly yeah like it creates that Championship callous a lot of coaches talking about it that way like when you have that adversity so I get why you would want to see it yeah I'm just not sure it's going to happen with this Chiefs team because of what they've done this off season there are only two questions that I have two positions that I think could be sore spots for the Kansas City Chiefs one being left tackle they've got Kingsley Su mataya stepping in he's going to play he was a top top two top two pick for the Kansas City Chiefs and then they've got um the cornerback opposite of Trent McDuffy because they traded larus sne this off season they still haven't figured out how to fix that position they've been workshopping a lot of other different guys if they can answer both of those positions in the affirmative then I think them thre peating is not just a strong possibility it's an inevitability like those are the two positions that I think the Chiefs can get got but if those guys can step in and in short order prove that they're up to the job then I don't see anybody getting in the way of Patrick Mahomes doing what no other quarterback has done in the last 50 years in the NFL the flip side of that tonight is Lamar Jackson starts his regular season with the Baltimore Ravens I I was thinking about this and doing my notes for today's show I I think we've actually undersold the importance of Derrick Henry like I don't think we've actually talked about the fact that Derrick Henry is on the raven this year but all of it Smalls comes back to Lamar Jackson is it Super Bowl appearance or Bust or Super Bowl winner bust for Lamar Jackson I think we might have undersold the Derrick Henry acquisition by the Ravens just because the Run game was so solid for them last year it's not as if that was an area of need and they fixed it they just added to a strength so I think that we you're right we may have understo that a little bit but I think it's Super Bowl appearance or bust because you have to continue to take those steps if you're Lamar Jackson obviously if he gets there we're going to expect him to win it based on the Talent around him and the fact that he's a two-time MVP Award winner but you can't be in the AFC Championship game last year and then do anything less than progress if you're Lamar you're at that stage in your career where you've proved how great you are you have a head coach who's won a Super Bowl you have an immense amount of talent around you when you look at the Ravens there's not a lot of holes on that team and you expect him to be able to get it done that's what the great ones do is they're able to get it done I Know This Much offensive coordinator Tai monin better run the ball more than eight damn times with somebody not named Lamar Jackson yeah that's what happened in the AFC Championship Game there was no excuse for them doing that against the Kansas City Chiefs that was not their formula 4 success this is a team that runs the football and plays good defense that's that that has been what they they they Pride themselves on with John Harbaugh as their head coach uh Super Bowl appearance or Bust or Super Bowl winner bust I mean if you if you get to the Super Bowl out of the AFC you better win it when you got an opportunity to you've already beaten the best team in you better win it it' be it'd be a it'd be a shame to win the AFC Championship game against Patrick Mahomes or whoever is is is your opponent and then get to the Super Bowl and lose they they've got to take advantage of those opportunities because they're not going to come that often with number 15 from Kansas City still being in the prime
