and I can't imagine a better way to start the day so what is the attitude for southern Utah come to Utah are they ready to shock the world is there a little bit of trepidation is it all of the above is there a little mystery because in all this era there's so many transfers everywhere nobody really knows what's going to happen yeah I think it adds you know the the transfer portal that is an aspect of mystery to every or any football program that you know leans on it very heavily we saw that with Florida State over the weekend in Ireland you know on on paper they should have been much better than Georgia Tech at least on one side of the line of scrimmage and they just got absolutely manhandled on on both and you give credit to Georgia Tech's offensive line but that defensive line shouldn't have stifled that Florida State Run game on paper but on the field the results were were of course very different I to your first question the the mood around southern east uh I I think this is a really confident team and a confident program right now uh coach Vince has done just a a heck of a job he was rewarded with a contract extension well deserved in this off season you know he he's really turned the program around almost immediately I I don't know how much better of a job he could have done certainly he I'm sure he tell you there are games that and moments that he'd like to to have back but uh the the upward trajectory is very apparent and this is a team that coming into it second season in the united Athletic Conference and it's third with Coach Fitz at the hel is certainly expecting to be a conference title contender in a league that last year was ranked as the third best FCS conference in the country behind the Missouri Valley in the Big Sky so who's it going to be a quarterback I got three possible names you tell us yeah it's it's been a fierce battle uh I mean ever ever since the spring uh it has been an intense battle between all three guys they feel like they've gotten it down to two they expect both of them will play that'll be Jackson Barry uh who was on the roster last year as the third string quarterback and they feel has really stepped his game up in the off season and has improved himself tremendously amidst the quarterback battle and it'll be him and Bronson Baron you know they expect you might see all three quarterbacks last time Southern Utah was in Salt Lake City three quarterbacks took the field you might see all three but certainly they expect uh both Barry and and baron to to play and you know Bronson Baron is a guy that uh has got a lot of experience at the FCS level has been very successful at at Weaver State uh he's a Utah native and you know I'm I'm sure he's excited to be playing back uh in his home state once again and you'll see him tomorrow you'll see Jackson Barry who is uh a phenomenal athlete when you talk about what he brings to the table but they feel like they've really stepped up his uh his passing ability throughout the quarterback competition so uh both guys should play and I I I want some wouldn't be surprised if we see all three Kyle Whittingham was just talking about the positions that they've added a chief of staff a general manager as the staffs get bigger I get how some of these schools are tracking the potential transfers all across the country but I don't think southern Utah has those kind of resources and yes they're getting from BYU Weber State UNLV Utah Tech we get that but how do they how do they find guys from New Mexico Military Institute Frostburg State the University of soue Falls if they brought in staff from those places what is the connection it obviously seems to be working but it also seems borderline impossible yeah I mean they're uh is an element of mystery to me as well with the transfer portal with out of how does this guy end up there and you just go through different uh back Channel Communications of oh this guy got recruited by this position coach and he went into the portal and he was looking for a home and he texted this guy and I mean there are a lot of different ways those connections get made you mentioned Frostburg State where Delane and several of his came from when they got to Southern Utah they had a remarkably successful almost decade run uh back in Maryland at what is now division 2 school they made that transition from a D3 to a D2 and uh they were very successful over there so when you see a player at Southern Utah come from Frostburg State it was probably somebody who played for for Coach Fitz uh all the way back on on the east coast and you know I I think they've done a nice job in the transfer portal I don't think you can highlight the transfers they're excited about obviously you talk about the quarterbacks like Bronson Baron but I think Mark Bales at wide receiver is guy who has got some pretty big shoes to fill you know Isaiah wooden was an impact player for the last couple of years after he transferred over from Kent State and he and Justin Miller had a a big big part uh we really the driving force of the southern Utah passing offense particularly down the field but you know he was a Do-it all guy for southern Utah and uh Bales coming from division 2 seen Hill College had almost a thousand yard season last year and I I think they're really excited about what he can bring to the table and uh you know like I said he he's got some some big shoes to fill but certainly he's got the talent uh to to be part of a really really productive receiving court is Braden Whistler at running back almost 700 yards ready to take the next step and go over a th Y and maybe first team All Conference it looks like it's possible and then you also got Lamson backing him up so it looks like they're fairly solid in the ground game yeah they they are you know and this is a running game you know coach Fitz is an offense guy and uh if you get really specific he's a run game guy you know he he's uh going to have a passing element and you know be balanced on offense but you know like coach Whittingham he he wants to he wants to run the football or as Brent key at Georgia Tech might say run the ball and I I think that for for Braden Whistler if you look at the second half of last year it was completely different this was a running game that struggled in the early part of the season and then they found their footing and what do you know Southern Utah started playing their best football and they were pushing for for a conference Championship and playing with the best teams in the league and competing with those that you know went on to make the the FCS playoffs like Austin P uh who they lost to in a double overtime Thriller last year so uh I I think whistler's got immense potential um based on what he you know showcased in the second half of last year it's the offensive line that gives me a lot of confidence though I I like both running backs I think they're going to bring a lot to the table you can have games I I think where bra Whistler will look like the hot hand and you'll have games where targi Lamson might be someone you ride with I think they you know complement each other very well they're certainly different Runners lamson's a little bit more physical and whistler's a little bit more of a scat back and I I think both are very capable but they're behind four returning offensive linemen uh from a unit that was uh exceptional in pass protection last year and found its footing in the ground game over the second half of the Season even without their All Conference offensive linean ly Santos so he's back healthy and ready to go and you know I I think that that that ground game is something that southern Utah is going to be able to lean on more frequently than they did last year defensively uh correct me if I'm wrong but I think they led the conference in sacks and tackles for loss and interceptions uh that suggests that the defensive line is creating a lot of uh Havoc as some coaches like to say yeah I uh I like the defensive line unit a lot you know there there's a lot to like on the defense there's certainly a couple of of questions I don't think doubts but questions in the secondary losing guys like AJ Felton Jordan Washington who were impact players last year for for this team Cody Coleman as well they've brought in a couple uh secondary but the defensive line is where it all starts and Ryland suo was a big big presence in in the middle of that defense along with Payton Payne last year and they're both back you know you lose Robert horsey to graduation and certainly that that's a name that has to be replaced with with how good he was on the defensive line last year but I think that when when you look at what they have and what they are bringing back uh they feel good about uh their front seven in general you know and you got to mention Conor colore might be the best all-around player on on the southern Utah defense has just been a standout from the moment he he set foot on campus at the linebacker position he's not the biggest guy and you know he may not blow you away with uh Elite physical traits all the time but then you're going to look up at the end of the game and go wow he had a pass break up two tackles for a loss and and nine total tackles uh that's just the way the way that he plays so you know up front with with defensive coordinator John Kelling back for his third year and he's done a great job over the last couple Seasons you you have to feel good about what s has on that side of the ball also to linebacking reading what the coaches are saying particular the head coach delaye saying that they very excited about the linebacking core they feel like they have depth you mentioned cmore but also guys like uh whan and Dunn and uh stad they they think that and then there's a couple new faces with Rich and uh I think his name fizel uh they think they've got enough Talent there uh it looks like on paper that uh they can be excited about this group yeah Ricky Rich the newcomer of the group and then as you mentioned a lot of veterans you know I I'd look for a guy like Mason stad to potentially have a big season you know it'll come down really to to who else is going to get the majority of of reps you know alongside cmore because you know you lose a guy like Aubrey nellum who's a fantastic player from last year's team and much like Isaiah woodn't leaving on offense it it leaves a pretty sizable void but you have so much talent and experience that that is poised to step in and fill that sort of role and you know I I can't say without having watched them play a game you know who that's going to be but it certainly could be a Mason stad it could be a Trent R Trent whan or maybe Ricky Rich you know uh flies up the depth chart and and ends up making a big impact I I think they all end up playing uh and and having a role in some capacity on the southern e saw defense Josh Dunn another peteran guy who's been here for for the last couple of years uh that they they have every right to feel confident in what this linebacking unit brings to the table when an FCS teams trying to pull an upset usually you know they're outmanned along the lines but they make big plays sometimes in special teams this team got a knack for anything there blocking kicks blocking punts in the return game is there anything there where there might be an edge well I I think in in the special team's regard you know they brought in a new kicker the this off season and the kicking game not not just with the the kicker himself but it it had its ups and downs last year and La last time uh these these two teams played you know Southern Utah started with uh it an onside kick and uh I I have no idea if that's uh in in the game plan once again we'll just have to see come come Thursday but uh I look at Elias vigil the punter had a really good season last year and uh not not in the sense that you know you're just snapping the ball and having him throw a 30 yard pass but his ability to flip the field and be precise in the punting game was really really solid for southern Utah last year and I think any defensive coordinator tell you that a good punter helps your defense a lot you know pting a team inside the 15 or inside the 10 is is immensely valuable and limits the play calling at some level for an offensive coordinator compared to starting at the 20 the 25 or anything beyond that so uh I I think vigil is is a guy that they uh that they really like back there and and can have a good day on on special teams and yeah if you're going to go in there and shock the world you might need a special play on special teams how many Southern Utah fans do we expect to make the trip does Cedar City empty out oh gosh um I I I don't know you know I'm up in the I'm up in the Press Box last time I was there and everybody's wearing red down below so it all looks the same uh I I know that there are a lot of people excited you know about the opportunity to play Utah I'm a big fan of the instate matchups you know we played BYU last year for the first time in 20 2016 and I I thought that was a great environment to be in I know rice Eckles will have a great environment as well and uh you you'll have a handful of Southern Utah fans certainly that that make the trip because you know they're excited to to have the opportunity to play at Utah to be sure but really just to to get their first impression of the football team which you know coming off their first winning season in 60 years and having so much returning Talent as we talked about uh I I think everyone down here in Cedar City is is really excited I know a couple uh people within the athletic department or at the school that otherwise need to be on campus are finding a reason to go up and uh and attend the game and you know I think it'll be an awesome way to to kick off the season to play a team like Utah that you know has a lot of big preseason expectations themselves they're my pick to to win the Big 12 this year and you know getting that that first first that first paay the football uh I think it's got something about the BYU starting quarterback Who who's it going to be I think it'll be RL and you think this because I'm just reading the tea leaves there it is I think that uh rettl has had the job for Spring ball went into the off season and didn't really do anything to lose it and bowan and closed the Gap but didn't do enough to take it away not yet but obviously not ruling him out and and I very well could be wrong so I'm not reporting it absolute fact uh conversations have led me to believe that this is what's going to happen for the first game that's so that's exactly what it is for the first game and I guess uh bo Hannon had some cryptic post on social media somewhere uh what did he say y on Instagram I said like takes things a god takes things away to test I remember what it was exactly but it was it was cryptic it was right around the timeline you would have thought he maybe a decision had come doesn't it make sense if if the coaches are being honest with us that it's really that close when you go with a guy who has two years of Eligibility over the guy who has one trying to build something going forward no I don't think that's it because because they may not be here next year so so what do they give a crap if they win three ball games there's going to be significant changes again so no I don't think that's the line of thinking whatsoever well to your point though they they obviously don't they want to win game so one guy get him better chance they' start that guy but they keep telling us that they're about the same so they presumably then they both give him about the same chance to win a game so in that case yeah you might be gone next year but you also might be here next year and then the pressure's on them too you can stick to that line of thinking if you want but I'm just telling you that's not their line of thinking right now if you want to continue to think it have at it uh but I don't think that's from what I in my conversations I don't think they're playing a younger guy simply because he is younger uh in eligibility wise I don't I don't think that's where they're they're at right now I think they're looking at uh who they feel has
