um we have a new Luke Simon um Champions League draw which we saw yesterday um it took a bit getting used to but I could see where they're going with it um many more games and quite a number of more teams more clubs in it um incidentally the Europa League draw will start in less than eight minutes it it takes a while to really rev up but will be across it Andy brassel will be with us for that and the Europa conference League draw we'll start that bit later at 1:30 but as for the Champions League draw yesterday um this new expanded Swiss format the amount of teams participating went from 32 to 36 the current eight groups of four no longer instead all the competing clubs put together in one big league one huge League each Club will now play eight matches in the first phase instead of the current six in previous times instead of just three different opponents twice home away teams will face a different team in every game there'll be 189 matches in the competition up from the previous 125 I don't know if you caught any of it Simon it looked complicated it's not really it's just different yeah and then people will get their head around it I mean if you've got the first in the league format without teams playing one another it almost makes it a non- league format because you're only playing eight teams but in the league format the first eight teams in League positions get through then the nine to nine to whatever it is 24 play one another in knockout games to get to the last 16 and 25 and Below go out I it's not to me first and foremost the champions league is nothing but the Champions League because they AR champion because they're in the champion so it's become a participation tournament about money it's just about money participation is the key component in it um and they've now evolved it again from what was a format that people like Sues and his predecessor Emin Hughes lift European cups where they won it in a tournament where only the Champions played and they played in a knockout tournament to now a a situation where it's not Champions to now another permutation of it which is more games because there's more money yeah and whether I whether I like it or I don't like it that's what they've done I'm not sure if I'm I like it because you're not playing teams home and away you know if you draw if you're fortunate a draft to play a tough side that's a less a big side at your ground rather than your their ground it neutralizes some of the outcomes to some extent that's right I don't understand the of a league competition that's my point Martin how do you like the sounds of this and for everybody listening this morning and watching on YouTube and Facebook we're trying to get heads around it it doesn't take a lot this is how it breaks down the new lot champions league as in the Champions League as in the Europa League as in the Europa conference League 36 clubs in each of the three competitions right we've got that one to8 in this league format go straight through to the round of 16 16 teams between 9th and 20 4th will play in a knockout phase for they plays in the round of 16 teams between 25 and 36 goodbye you're out it's as simple as that Martin but where it is good is bigger teams will play bigger teams more regular Simon that's how it breaks down we'll see more of the big boys play the big boys in a weighted way wasn't that the wasn't that a very the very principle of the founding fathers of the European Super League is that a back door Super League wasn't that their premise and of course they where they felt of it was the lack of meritocracy and the relegation promotion of things this doesn't have that challenge because it wouldn't dare but isn't it more about playing the bigger sides to one another because that's the underlying argument that's the argument that they have in Europe which is people are bored of seeing domestic football I I don't think people are B of seeing domestic football but the European powerhouses that believe that they've got the the ears of the broadcasters yeah and the commercial advertisers suggest that if Bayern Munich are playing Liverpool the audience figures are going to be significant the advertising revenue is going to be significant and clearly with the increase in revenues that this is going to bring because you've got 50% more games yes yeah you you've hit right up on it Simon is it a backdoor Super League Martin that's what that it looks like it smacks of it certainly a different format I it creates a little bit of extra interest J as well you I think maybe you're going to have to win about three matches as the statisticians are suggesting win three games and you're pretty well guaranteed to go through um my biggest beef would be why have we waited you know all summer to go and and and do the draw where the clubs and the fans have just been again I think it's disrespectful you've got what are we now 16 17 days away from this we don't even know the the fixtures yet so we know the teams but we don't know where the games are being played I think you're going to have faced with fans over the weekend I think the Arsenal situation they're going to have to buy their tickets while they're watching a game but isn't there the EM aren't there still I mean with all fairness to their argument which I think is a reasonable one but isn't there still teams waiting to be in the final part of the competition because you've got the playoffs going into the Champions League yeah but this is later than last year this is three or four days later than last year for instance when it was done so I I think maybe this should all be moved forward a bit quicker so that you can at least organize your travel and you you know where you're going at the moment we still don't know it's a bit of a lottery isn't it would you want to leave it this late as a I see where's going with that if I'm a supporter I don't know where my club is going to be playing in 2 E when when um yeah I get I take the point when when was the last part where the final teams qualified to be part of the Champions League I think that was only recently M so once you've gone past the all the component parts cuz you can't have a TBA can you you can't have XYZ plays a TBA draw the draw for the Euros in the summer was done with the expected teams wasn't it you know winner of X Y and Zed plays so why can't you do that that's that's that's a close use of one-month tournament this is a six-month tournament with a variety of fixtures involving countries and teams still a bit late yeah aate if the argument from the F point if the argument is four days difference I mean yeah doesn't really make that much difference I know well it's it's here they've changed it and it's here to stay not just for the champions league but for the Europa League and the draw for that starts in in a couple of minutes Andy brassle will join us for it but we're right across it it'll take ages to get revved up as I said so we will re rejoin it when it gets mey and meaningful in the final hour and then the draw for the Europa conference League gets underway at 1:30 and they're all the same 36 clubs in each of the three European competitions and the same metri applies will keep across it uh many people get in touch about your memory of sellur Park sellur Park 100 years old today uh Clinton
