PCL also called as posterior cruciate ligament is one of the most important ligaments in the knee joint it is there at the back of the knee joint it provides stability to the knee joint so how does a PCL tear occur most commonly PCL tear occurs in road traffic accidents or dashboard injuries it can also happen when somebody falls directly on the knee while uh walking down the stairs or uh while running it also occurs commonly while playing sports like football Cricket skiing Etc so how to identify a PCL tear whenever somebody has any injury to the knee joint and if he feels that there is pain at the back of the knee there is some swelling and there is instability in the knee that he's not able to run he's not able to play any sports he has pain and he has difficulty when he is walking downstairs while using a staircase he feels that the knee is not stable it is buckling giving way then you could be having a PCL tear how do we diagnose these PCL tears when somebody has this problem he has to consult an orthopedic surgeon then the orthopedic surgeon will examine and if he feels feels that the knee is not stable then he will advise some tests like X-rays and MRI scans of the knee joint so MRI is the gold standard for identifying a PCL injury so we will know in an MRI whether the person is having PCL sprain which is a grade one injury or partial PCL tear which is grade 2 injury or grade three injury where the PCL is completely torn or a grade four injury when PCL is associated with some other ligament injury inside the knee because usually PCL tears are associated with other injuries in the knee also like it could be a posterolateral corner injury or an ACL injury or a meniscus injury PCL injuries are less common when compared to an ACL injury of the knee if you take the overall knee injuries PCL injuries are less than 20% but these are very significant injuries because they make the knee very unstable so once you are diagnosed with an PCL injury so what is the treatment option for a PCL injury so if it is a PCL sprain or a partial PCL tear then just a good PCL rebound knee brace have to wear this knee brace for about 6 to 8 weeks minimum so this will help in healing of the sprained PCL or the partial tear will heal but if there is a complete PCL tear then that's when surgery is required so in surgery what do we do it can be done as a all inside arthoscopic PCL reconstructive surgery using uh internal B fiber tape so this is the latest technique which is available in which we make small tunnels or sockets inside the bone so so that it is more stronger than a regular PCL reconstruction surgery so the recovery after a PCL uh surgery is generally it takes about 3 months for somebody to recover completely after a PCL surgery but to play sports you have to do good Physiotherapy and good strengthening exercises and good rehab to recover faster and maybe you will be able to play your sport after about 9 months
