Instant IOWA: Iowa State wins the Cy-Hawk game on a late field goal

reaction presented by Fairway meet and grocery from the channnel seed Studios this is Iowa everywhere um what the hell just happened at kinnick Stadium it is instant Iowa and we've only had a few seconds to try to stomach what just happened as Iowa blows a 13 nothing lead and loses the shawk game on a 54 yard field goal from Kyle conrardy in the final seconds it is a cyclone Victory I'm Chris Hassel here on instant Iowa presented by Fairway in the channel seed Studios uh Andrew DS is in the hospital right now recovering from colon Sur surgery uh I have a feeling he's going to be in the hospital a little longer than he thought after the way this game finished John Miller is stepping in for ad tonight John what are your thoughts on this absolutely gut-wrenching defeat I would say Iowa probably got what it deserved in the end um Iowa had Iowa State on the ropes early reeling and Iowa got cute in the red zone on two uh first down and goal to go from inside the 10 yard line one of them was at the five and they got cute a couple of times and they came away with just six points as opposed to either 14 points or 10 points and then they went for two early in the in the third quarter and they lose by one these there was a lot of uncharacteristic things that happened today there were a few positive flashes but I think the team that won the game deser deserved to win the game they never quit they never stopped they got dealing and Iowa was back on its heels playing from behind when they were ahead and they got what they deserved Iowa had a 13 nothing lead they had the football at Iowa State's 42 yd Line This was early on in the third quarter Iowa state had not shown that they could stop the run at all and what does Iowa do very first play they put it in the air Cade mcamera turns the ball over and and from that point on things turned and this was a game a tale of two games for both of the quarterbacks M Nea started this game seven of eight uh he was terrible the rest of the way from the second quarter all the way through the end six of 21 to finish oh and didn't even reach the 100 yard Mark throwing on the other side Roco Beck uh he played in that second half like the quarterback we thought he was he started 11 for 19 72 yards and a pick he finished 12 for6 200 yards and two touchdowns and John I 100% agree with you even though it's tough to say I would deserve to lose this game yeah they did H there's I mean I I don't know how you can think otherwise unless you have the rosiest of tinted glasses on Iowa was dominating this game in nearly every facet and and I'm going to I hate to say this cuz last week you were similar you you held yourself real well last week on social media by the way early on and then I came out and played really well in the second half it was a tale of two halves for Kade mcnamer wasn't even really A Tale of Two Hales for Kade mcnamer today because Kade McNamara didn't really play well at all I said this on uh Twitter earlier during the game I'm gonna use a baseball analogy um Kade mcnam I don't think's completed one high leverage throw yet through two games meaning a throw that he needed to make to perpetuate a drive or uh he missed the the Deep throw to Brown Caleb has so far this year even last week in the second half uh Less in the second half but certainly in the first and most of the day today he's making his throws and right after he's done releasing he's kind of leaning back that's a part of your release that's a part of your trunk and your foundation when you're trying to make a throw that's why he under through the ball to Caleb Brown which should have been a touchdown for I we don't need THB and almost ended up with a pick on that yeah and the pick that he did throw when he was trying to hit Lee and he threw into bracket coverage there was a Defender underneath there was Defender over the top and I think late in his release he realized that and that's why it was so badly underthrown and intercepted Caleb Kade mcamera has not looked good and so far when Iowa has needed him to make a throw he's over for the season and to that point uh Iowa had that great resp response where they ran it all over the Cyclones in that that drive that was capped off by the Johnson touchdown in Iowa went for two which I I don't know if it was the wrong call I know you lost the game by a point at the time I said I I was I said I I wouldn't have done it and I thought it was uncharacteristic of Iowa to do that because yes you give yourself a chance to still be tied if you give up two touchdowns but then a touchdown and two field goals can beat you and that's exactly what happened and John after that seven plays 79 yd touchdown Drive Iowa had the ball six more times three of them were three and outs they never gained more than 14 yards in fact just adding up the numbers here they totaled 23 yards on those last six drives after that great touchdown drive and when Iowa State made The Adjustment and said look we have got to stop the run now they finally are leaning on it we've got to shut it down they did and Kade mcnamer just could not make a play and you know say what you want about the Iowa defense giving up back-to-back 75 yard touchdown drives and then giving up the big play on that last drive and the field goal but they made enough plays I thought to win this game Sebastian Castro made two great tackles on back-to-back drives where they shut Iowa State down and then they get this one last shot and when you've got a quarterback that's that good and playmakers that are that good and a 68 tight end over the middle it's it's just a matter of time before these guys start clicking and making plays and Iowa State ends up winning this thing 20 to9 and the biggest comeback Iowa state has had in four years down 13 points to me I John I was very scared the entire fourth quarter but when Iowa had a 13 nothing lead and had the ball at the 42 yard line of Iowa State I thought this game was over what did you think yeah I felt really comfortable um a lot of part because what we had not seen Iowa State really do consistently and one of the things I wrote about um in my not really preview article this week for Iowa everywhere there was a line in it where I said one of the problems when you have a youngish quarterback that comes into kinnick Stadium is when Iowa's defense invites you to come across the middle they want you to come play in the Deep Waters there with them and that's typically where Iowa's zone defense is going to trip up quarterbacks that haven't been in that environment before I'm not saying Roco hasn't been in a great environment I just felt like that was going to be an area where Iowa State struggled and they did early on he threw the pick he came across the middle there Iowa State hadn't really done anything yet but Iowa State never gave up on its running game its running game was annoying and effective enough to set up some of the flat route passes in their RPO game now Iowa has a bit of an RPO game now too or they want to try to they're in the early stages of starting it it's not good it's DOA and I don't know if it was a cognitive cognizant decision or not Chris Williams made this tweet and I can't remember exactly the point it was but it was still Iowa still had four possessions left to go I think it's when Iowa State got within five he tweeted this you've got to address the Iowa Run game Kirk sees the shift on the other side he's going to try to milk this clock as much as possible you need to creep up the safeties more Blitz some linebackers one-on-one with quarterbacks and make mcnea beat you if he does he does brilliant analysis I retweeted it because that's the way that everyone should play Iowa and Iowa did what Iowa does I don't think Iowa state would have punted the ball back to any other opponent on their schedule with just three minutes left in the game and them trailing by two the way that they did unless it was Iowa because Matt Campbell knows Iowa's so predictably incompetent and inep on offense and that they're going to try to run the clock out and milk it and that's exactly what they did but I mean Iowa did run it down to not a ton of time left but still Iowa played not to lose and they lost they should have been up more than 13 to nothing they they when when we look back on this we rewatch the game I think you're going to see that Iowa would have put this game away early in the first half when they had two different times inside the 5 yd line of Iowa State and Cade mcamera threw the ball four times from inside the 5 yard line of Iowa State and he it amounted to minus one yard he he completed one of those passes for minus one yard going into that the drive where Iowa finally just ran the ball every play Iowa had SE uh 23 throws to just 17 runs even with that lead I just could not for the life of me understand why they kept trying to throw the football what what were they trying to do Iowa State could not stop the run they could not stop Caleb Johnson Iowa state was struggling on the outside you heard Gary Danielson talk during the broadcast and by the way CBS does the best job of televising College football of anybody on the planet I'm not just saying that because they're your employer they're incredible it's an amazing broadcast it really is but but Danielson brought up that Iowa and he he would have picked up on this in their meetings with the Iowa coaching staff that Iowa wanted to be like what masters of the sea masters of the sea gap which is running to the outside and we all saw that Caleb uh Johnson had a lot of success going to that right side outside seag Gap well when it became time that Iowa State felt that Iowa was going to come into this predictability funnel that Iowa always gets into and these two score milkers that Mark Morehouse always refers them as that Iowa was going to keep doing the same things Iowa wasn't going to try to counter off of what Iowa State's head-on Tendencies would be based upon Iowa's success Tendencies earlier in the game Iowa just kept running into that wall and honestly the only place that Johnson had consistent success in this game was in the seag Gap um there was one time where Iowa ran a Zone play to the field side Johnson was patient and he cut up the backside and it was about a 20 or 30 yard run to the left but that wasn't an outside SE Gap play that was a zone that was a Zone scheme type cutback Lane play that you used to see Terrell Terrell Davis do with the Broncos I I just think that they fell into past Comfort zones in these types of games they got predictable and Iowa State countered Iowa State started rolling their safeties over to the fieldside seag Gap and they shut it off for the rest of the game they that Iowa State made a very simple adjustment this isn't brain surgery what Iowa state did they just bet that Iowa would keep doing Iowa things and Iowa State BET right the Cyclones won this game on a 54 yard field goal in the final seconds by Kyle cardi who may have props to that kid he missed the 41 y at the end of the first half to keep the Cyclone scoreless he comes through in the second half with a 46 Y and a 54 y as the Cyclones go five plays 42 yards and 28 seconds to take the lead over Iowa and it holds up visit Freedom tire.com John this to me is one of the most disheartening losses that I can remember in recent history as as an Iowa fan a lot of the losses Iowa has had is just when you run up against a a great team or a really good team and you're just clearly not good enough you know you're not good enough against Michigan you're not good enough against Penn State where does this loss rank right now in terms of God you just you just gave it away you know I I think to answer that question for each person is going to be a a personal thing because it's also derived in based on expectations now obviously losing to your instate rival is always going to hurt more um just because it's Iowa State and a lot of you guys work together and you'll have to take stuff at the water cooler I'm glad I'm not in Iowa yeah because yeah absolutely for for and and neither are you but for for people uh that are it's going to be it's going to be tough because Iowa fans aren't haven't been used to this I mean it was eight of 10 going into this thing Campbell had only won one time and and is just John it was the way they lost the way they lost this game the the and I think that's going to be what hurts and sticks with a lot of fans more is the way they lost this game was reminiscent um of the way that they've lost games in the past by inept offense in the second half Matty van Matty van stats said the road teams won this game uh the last five games and I'm looking over at the second half Stats Iowa barely back to 100 yards in the second half they were up 13- 10 two-core milker as Mark morouse put it all right they're up 13 to 10 we've seen this before and it's just it's a similar pattern now they didn't get blown out the way that they did in their you know uh their losses against really good teams next season but this Iowa State team I don't think's going to be a really good team and I'm not throwing shade at them they got their linebacker situation a lot of issues there their offensive line they're thin and it's tough in game two even though they have an early buy coming up which is really good for them to kind of maybe boost your ceiling up a little bit but I give Iowa State an immense amount of credit in this game for their coaches not losing the players Iowa was bullying the out of them mauling Ming them and it Roco Beck looked like he had never played the position before in the first half I mean he was clearly rattled their punter couldn't even catch a long snap they had to bench their punter because he fumbled two long snaps they were committing penalty after penalty they really outside of a couple huge bow UPS on defense to hold Iowa to a couple of field goals Iowa State really could not have played any worse in that first half right yeah it was I mean you look at the first half totals um which it's Iowa state had 101 yards in the first half to Iowa was 196 Iowa state was averaging 3.4 yards per play to Iowa's 5 .4 you flip to the second half Iowa State goes for 260 and Iowa goes for 107 it just the script totally flipped I actually felt like Iowa was in a really good position to set Iowa State up for some big plays deep because of Iowa State's over aggressiveness against the running game which is what everybody does that's what everybody does to Iowa they had too they had it Kade undershot him yeah they should continue to do it but Kade mcamera uh is not big game Kade or big throw game yet at Iowa City he's 18 and five now as a starter really good record but he has not made a big throw when it counted in his career uh for the Iowa Hawkeyes and what is it now seven games that he's played and it's really disappointing because his mechanics I think it's a failure of mechanics he is coming off of another injury he's had a couple of knee injuries over the last year three years he's had to recover from maybe there is some Rust but uh whatever it is um he's he's not stepping up and making those plays and a lot of lot of Iowa fans are are complaining about everything right now including the defense and look you're not used to seeing teams put up those kind of numbers against Iowa's defense but you're also not used to playing teams that have a quarterback in wide receivers that are as good as Iowa States we said going into this game all week on Iowa everywhere that maybe outside of Ohio State this is the best combination of quarterback pass catchers that they're going to see all season long somehow shut them out in the first half M but again you give this team chances they get their feet underneath them and all of the sudden they're in the game and in the end they win the game instant Iowa is presented by Iowa Korn the Iowa Corn s Hawk series saw a bunch of the good folks from Iowa Korn out there around the the S Hawk trophy after the game filled up with unlet 88 E15 gasoline uh just kind of rolling the hundreds of comments that we've we've had in our live comment feed here and one theme that keeps coming up is the second guessing of the two-point conversion we've hit on it a little bit but I am not going to blame this loss on that decision right I wouldn't have done it myself I was surprised they did it but if they get that two-point conversion then Iowa state has to go down and what score a touchdown on on that last Drive correct uh if they get the two-point conversion then yes it would have been 21 to 17 correct so they have to score a touchdown on that last drive if you get it right if you kick a field goal they still would have tied the game the way this game was going the way this game was going though I my money would be on Iowa State in the extra session I I actually wouldn't have minded Iowa in a shorter field at that point in time they put the ball at the 25 it's not the obviously it's not look it's better than losing the game outright but I just for sure no I get what you're saying we're Parson Harrison going back and what's interesting to me is Iowa also went for two early last week uh in their season opener against Illinois State they didn't get it Kirk wasn't on the sidelines there and I wondered that had Kirk been there would they had gone for two because I believe that those kind of conversion decisions are solely at Kirk ference's feet that's that's my what my gut tells me that he makes the call on those so it is a little interesting to see them going for it early maybe there's some analytics that somebody brought to them before the season began that said the old thinking of don't go for two until you have to isn't is not the new meta I don't know but you're right that's not why they lost it I mean your five-star All-American safety Xavier Wampa how badly he got beat and how bad his feet were and his hips were when that guy ran right by him and Chad lysic code pointed something out um on his Twitter during the game is that Iowa was playing a bit more straight 43 in this contest and when they were playing straight 43 did it it get last week too they removed waa from the game and had entringer playe free safety and they move Castro to strong safety I think that play underscored why and I don't know how many more snaps the rest of the day that waa got I'm so pissed I'm so pissed because I could see that goddamn train in coming right in the first half when they were refusing to run the football they were just toying around early third quarter you're toying around you're trying to get cute and you know maybe in the back of their minds they're going to say yeah well that's you you the fans wanted it f you you wanted this out of the off no that's not what we wanted right that is not we don't want you to be stupid okay we want you to do things that work what did we say all week for both of these teams neither one of them did it very well well early on in this game Iowa needs to run the football keep giving it to Caleb and get out of the way until Iowa State can prove that they can stop it and they didn't stop it until close to the fourth quarter and for for Iowa State what did we say they're gonna have to make big plays to win this game they're GNA have to use Rocco and their and their great pass catchers and they they didn't do that in the first half I mean I this a couple of other things too Chris that not necessarily characteristically Iowa and and to be fair for beating up on them saying that they just got in a predictable shell I I want to point something out so it was Iowa State's first possession of the second half Iowa was leading 13 to nothing Iowa State didn't do anything and they had that shank punt right so Iowa has first and 10 at their own 42 now at Iowa State's 42 Iowa sorry at Iowa State's 42 now run the ball that's against the grain in that spot running the ball right there is Against the Grain and that would have probably been a good time to do it hell yes what's everyone thinking on their couch at home including me well they're probably going to try a deep shot here on a play action well they did but they didn't they did a moving pocket right maybe Cade's more comfortable with that had a little boot motion into it and that's the play where Cade came back across to his left to try to hit Lea in bracket coverage that was first in 10 Iowa at the Iowa State 42 that cost them points and at that point in time the Yang the end to the Yang move was to run the ball because they were expecting that they dropped several people back into pass coverage expecting that very thing to happen Iowa State played a better chess match than Iowa but Iowa also executed incredibly poorly in this game and that's what's going to haunt this team and a lot of fans maybe you included the rest of the season because Iowa lost the chess match and they should not the rest of the season a lot of people commenting about what this does to Iowa's playoff chances and the argument of you know Gary Danielson and Brad nestler talked about it a little bit during the game both of these teams feel like they've got an outside shot Iowa State probably has to win the Big 12 but with Iowa's schedule it looked like there was a pass even with what looks like a sure loss to Ohio State to get to 10 and two to maybe get in the playoff um this was a game they needed this this is arguably the second most difficult game they're going to have this season and where are the quality wins going to come from but I will also say this it's week two and Iowa has a lot of problems right now on offense still it I don't want to hear people talking playoff for at least until October okay now I might be forced to talk about it on Iowa everywhere but Iowa's not even going to be ranked they're going to likely have to either win the Big 10 or go nine and one the rest of the way with the one loss to Ohio State to get in the playoff yes it's it's fun it would be really fun if we had playoff discussion this is just this this does not look like a playoff team to me no and and and it was interesting because I was looking this up about the middle of the third quarter still thinking Iowa was probably going to win the game and knowing that you and I would have this conversation I and I felt it would be coming from a different emotional standpoint of you talking about hey Iowa still has a shot to the playoff let's look at their playoff path and what I was going to say which also couples into that question of you asking me how disappointed of a loss in this looking back through history I didn't come into this season thinking that this was a that the playoffs were likely or if it was playoff or bus you know what I didn't either but are you surprised at how many people including very well-respected journalists that we have on that cover Iowa on a daily basis like dran saying it's playoff or bust this dran out of his mouth I'm not saying he's I'm not saying he's wrong because it's coming from a different place I know you're not either but to me I look back at last season at the end of the regular season when Iowa was 10-2 getting ready to play Michigan in the Big 10 championship game you know what Iowa was ranked going into the Big 10 championship game in that week's college football playoff poll which was the second to last one they were 16 they were 10 and two yeah they were 16 that team last year no way they would have gotten it at large to the play not a chance not a chance so a couple things had to happen this year for this year's 10- two potentially which is what I thought they'd do to look better than last year's 10 and two one of them front and center was have an offense that wasn't a punchline right I don't know that they've answered that question just yet I'm a lot less confident now than I was last week even accounting for Illinois State I thought that they could be confident you and I have said the same thing for a long time just be the 99th ranked offense just be the 90th ranked offense in the country and you're and you might actually have a chance to not lose 35 nothing to Tennessee get your ass and bears to Michigan or everyone Penn State 31 nothing like last year but they I don't know that they do I think that this year's offense is going to perform better than last year's offense but I don't think Iowa has enough opportunities and I didn't feel this way before the season began to beat enough quality teams to have a resume that's going to look clearly better than another 10 and two team maybe from the SEC or somewhere so I never felt I felt that Iowa's playoff chances basically lived and died with going 11 and one and I personally feel now that 11- one is off the table so yeah yeah I I don't know how you see him beating Ohio state 10- two might not get you there you might have to somehow get into the Big 10 championship game and hope you don't play Ohio State which doesn't doesn't seem likely going to welcome in a guest in just a second but I I want to just put something out there that's that's very strange in my own head as I try to like uh grapple with this defeat is this is basically what I predicted would happen the score in the outcome I predicted an Iowa State 20 to 17 win I thought rck Ock and those wide receivers were going to make some big plays on this defense and even if Iowa State made some big mistakes that they were going to be able to win this game yet that is not how I saw it going down like not at all and we'll bring in a gentleman now who was just like everybody else and picked Iowa to win this game it's I did it's Chris Williams joining us now on instant Iowa I I'm sorry to Iowa fans for for bringing in a cyclone onow I'll be sufferable I promise I I think I believe I was the only Iowa every personality to pick Iowa State I'm not gloating here because again I didn't see it going down like this but Williams a as an Iowa State guy what are your thoughts after one of the biggest comebacks and one of the biggest wins that Matt Campbell has had well I'll give you first of all really like really proud of that team right like that they couldn't even get snaps off in the first quarter couldn't catch a punt they were rattled Rock was you know a yard off of everywhere he needed to be the defense you know I gave Tim Lester a lot of credit at halftime like they were going right at Iowa State's weaknesses and I thought that I my analysis on the game was going to be 100% correct because I didn't think Iowa state would be able to stop the run and for the most part they couldn't right and then Iowa so I'll give you my analysis on Iowa like I I cannot believe that they didn't try and run the football more especially when they had that first and goal I don't know where it was at in the football game Williams there there were two different times Iowa had the ball inside the Iowa State five and multiple Downs to work with and they passed four times over the course of two possessions and didn't score a touchdown on either one mamera what did he end up uh 13 of 29 and I would love to know what he was in the first quarter he started seven for eight Williams okay there you go this is what he started he started seven for eight 61 yards and a touchdown and I'm on Twitter being a jackass saying that this offense is borderline erotic I saw that and and the rest of the way the guy he was like six for 23 38 yards and a pick so if I'm an Iowa fan I'm just I rate about that because I'll tell you this as an Iowa State fan I was cheering every time MC Nera dropped back because I knew we had a shot every time 12 dropped back I knew we had a shot every time two got the ball my sphincter Titan just a little bit okay and you know Iowa State misses that field goal at the end of the first half where it felt like that could have been a real like but even with the Miss I was thrilled to be down 13 to nothing I felt like it should have been 25 to nothing it should have at that point right so I'm not going to be able to rewatch this game I'm not because I'm going to watch that first half and and early on in the third quarter and I'm going to say how is Iowa not up four scores and a game over that's what it felt like to me you know I I felt like I was beaten and bruised and that that we were going through a formality at that point but I did think man the fact that Iowa state was able to hang and the fact that this is just a two-score game and I I felt it in the third quarter you could tell I thought that Kirk fence kind of saw what was what was going on and I give John hok Iowa State's defensive coordinator a ton of credit because he their best players on defense are their safeties and those guys crept up and they are really good against the run when they aren't healthy they don't stay healthy very often they're like uh brittle Bob Sanders is how I would describe them to your Iowa fan base Bob didn't get hurt as much these guys hit and they go up and they can stop the run but they are very injury-prone but you catch them in week two they are healthy and they did just enough uh I I thought but yeah like so I give Iowa State Credit because they they outlasted you know that's just what happens in football right especially you're on the road and you got all this stuff against you and you started like crap and you have all these bad penalties that were just unforced and you kept doing it you miss kick and but they did they didn't make like the massive mistake that would bury them mhm but then Iowa like I felt like everything Iowa did well in that first quarter to take advantage of Iowa State's weaknesses they just completely went away with it I thought they got too cute which is very ironic frankly yeah when it comes to talking about Iowa's offense but I'm I'm proud of that Iowa State team though like I Rocco was bad early on and he he kind of hung with it uh but I again like I just if I'm an Iowa fan today it's like God you just you had so many opportunities to just step on their throat and they just they never did it and I would frankly be asking the question man if I'm Kirk fence right now I'm looking over at my offensive coordinator I'm being like godd damn it if you just would have done how I've done it the last 20 years you probably would have won that freaking football game you know what I mean John like you you're a bigger historian than I am if they just would have done what they do I it would have been unreachable for Iowa State it felt to me a lot like what we've just seen under Bryant's tenure as offensive coordinator he he ziggs he kind of Zig sometimes and we all thought he should zag and vice versa and I just felt like th those getting too cute down there in the red zone is something that's going to haunt Kirk quite a bit um and and it should and but timately I think this season you know however it ends up quarterback play was going to be the biggest uh issue coming into the season for how good this Iowa team can be I've seen nothing to change my mind on this the offensive line is good enough Iowa has a really good set of skill position players their receivers actually look like receivers now um the running back stable is incredibly deep it's quarterback I don't think Iowa has an upper what there 18 teams in the Big 10 right now I don't think Iowa has a better quarterback than room than maybe one or two of those teams in the Big 10 that's not going to change this is who they are this season and as I said before you weren't on here Kade mcamera has yet to make a high leverage completion as a quarterback for the University of Iowa I don't know that I see a lot of those happening going forward real quick question and I was just doing my cycle and fanatic postgame and I was trying to go through the box Lee did I miss something was he just he wasn't hurt was he I I didn't notice him out there he catch in the game oh okay I I didn't know cuz I was asking myself did he get hurt and I didn't realize it I didn't have him down as a catch and good again if you're listening to us uh via podcast either later on Saturday night or Sunday we we go up as soon as the game ends we're kind of in between uh the end of the game and the postgame news conferences so there's a lot of stuff that we'll learn okay moving forward one other one other point I would make for the Iowa audience and then I got to go do leadfield Post game um the the Iowa wide receivers they may be good going forward but I think that they got a little bit of a taste of reality today as well because Iowa State's got pretty good corners and they they were just you could tell that Iowa State's Corners were going to try and push them around and just out physical those guys and I thought that I thought that they really did that that doesn't mean Iowa's guys suck that's not what I'm saying I'm just saying there's a big difference between you know that Illinois state Iowa State clearly went into that and said we are going to try and rough these guys up if we get a couple penalties then so be it but we're going to be as physical as possible that's one of the notes that I took with for on my Iowa side of the page for this week I don't think that you're wrong I think that I haven't seen Caleb Brown necessarily fight through that yet vandery is so young and he he looked where last week he looked big and looked the part this week he looked like a freshman that needs more time in the waight room it's interesting how that can change from one week to the next the transfer that they had from Northwest actually is one of the best looking receivers I that I see for them on this team um it's just that uh I I saw several plays where Iowa's route trees and I gosh I've been doing this seemingly since me and Jim Zabo used to do this together Iowa's route trees once again on like third and six third and five you got everybody doing five yard curls or some type of uh variation thereof it's just it just felt like this was the stale Iowa football offense today and and they and Kirk has a tough time dealing with success dealing with Good Fortune he just gets into that two-score grinder mode and Chris your tweet that you made was perfect I retweeted it and I hated retweeting it not because it was you but because like hassle said earlier you could see the train coming and Iowa was not going to deviate from what Iowa does Iowa state knew this they gambled they bet and as I said earlier I don't think Iowa State punts the ball back to the opponent any other game on their schedule the rest of the year with three minutes left other than Iowa because Matt Campbell knew what Iowa was going to do and Iowa did what he thought they would do two minutes and 50 seconds no three minutes and 15 seconds left in the game when Iowa State punted it to Iowa and the Hawkeyes just uh they got one first down but but couldn't get that second Williams I'll let you get out of here to do your field duties thanks for jumping in good show looks like we have a huge audience appreciate everybody yeah paying attent I'm not trying to be I was trying to be not condescending it's a lot of Iowa State fans are listen it doesn't matter what you say today here your very presence is going to trigger yeah this is a safe space okay have a good show see you get out of here clone uh we're uh do anything before this show um the minute it's over I might go to the Porsche but I guess I've seen the movie so many times Chris and I don't want to seem disaffected or oh Jon's just so old and jaded now there may be some of that I did these postgame shows since 2003 up until last year all right and I used to get so sick like I would get almost G to vomit because the just knew I couldn't continue to do that but I think a lot of it again just comes down to what your preseason expectations were I didn't think this was a playoff team but I also thought they'd win this game am I I had them losing this game I mean I like again on paper you would think I'd be coming on here and I'd be like yeah it's what I I know I know I know look it it one thing objective analysis is one of the things that we have to do in the world that we live in but there's also in this world the sandbox we get a play in with with Iowa everywhere we can also be fans like we are on this show and we're you know we're kind of all commiserating together um I'm not happy about it it's just what is this year 25 of Kirk yeah right and I started doing this in Kirk's first year but I was Miller I drank the Kool-Aid last week the way the offense looked againsts team I listen to all the shows I listen to you guys I listen to murf and Andy so great to have them back I listen to it all and I was agreeing with everything I made my largest ever single game wager on Iowa to cover two and a half points now it's a wager I had from profit from last week's parlay so and Miller you were with the majority of the country about 90% of the public bets were on Iowa either minus two and a half or minus three everybody was picking Iowa they game day set earlier today they were like seven wide every single person picked Iowa and they were all feeling good two and a half quarters into this game forgot a lesson that we all learned and you talked about it too we've all been lulled into overconfidence in this rivalry oh Iowa State sucks against Illinois state in week one Iowa State sucks against Northern Iowa in week one sometimes they've lost to him oh Iowa State but when it turns the week two this game is a intense game and a lot of times mental mistakes wind up being the difference and that was the case today and how poetic is it for longsuffering Iowa State fans who have PTSD every time a place kicker runs out onto the field W one of their kickers kicks in a 50 plus yard field goal to win it this is how Iowa typically and Andy fails who was in the chat earlier even said he's like it's got to be you know unbelievable that Iowa State flipped the script and did to Iowa what Iowa does to everyone Iowa was out playing in the deep water they were playing their Anaconda game and Iowa State snuck free wriggle free got away and won the game and as we started this Iowa State deserved the win and Iowa played to lose and they got what they deserved I hate it I'm just not gonna throw or punch anything right now instant Iowa presented by Fairway meet and grocery in the channel seed Studios Chris Hassel and John Miller uh Andrew DS will be rejoining us next week uh after he gets out of the hospital he's finally put back together again like Humpty Dumpty and he's going to be 100% uh minus the fact that I know this this game is is killing him I mean just killing him a few people uh get down like Andrew does after a loss so I'm I'm sorry that uh maybe that could have been the best medicine for him but didn't happen today one more thing before we go do you think John that there will be Andor that there is a quarterback controversy moving forward because I have seen a lot of people in the comments and yes there are thousands of them and everybody's overreacting right now because we're all pissed off after that performance from Kade mcamera how much are we going to be clamoring for Sullivan moving forward I think there'll be a lot of clamoring from a lot of fans for Sullivan moving forward I haven't been at practice and I still cling to the old notion that the Iowa coaches put the players in the game that they believe give them the best chance to win so that necessarily doesn't speak a lot for what Sullivan does although I know you're really keen on watching Iowa quarterbacks who transferred out how they're doing the rest of the year hey deakon Hill threw another bomb today yeah how Joey do today I didn't see I that Deacon was the only one I saw it was 77 and then I checked in again and UNLV was beating him by like 70 but uh so Iowa Iowa plays Troy next week right yeah if you don't see Sullivan get any snaps in that game unless it's due to an you know not due to an injury if he doesn't get any non-injury snaps there won't be a replacement until at the least after Iowa loses by 45 to Ohio State that's going to be your tail if suvan gets some snaps next week and it's not because mcnamer is injured then that means the evaluation still ongoing in a big way but if you don't see him they're not interested in that Matty van Winks pulling up laus's stats today 12 for 22 uh 68 yards a touchdown and two picks and a blowout loss at FIU Jeff brings up a question about Sullivan why would we bring in Sullivan if not to be used well I never thought they'd use him this season I thought that they were bringing him in to be the starter for next season and I never really thought that he was in that race because of the amount of money that Kade mcnamer is getting and the the comfortability that Kirk has with him correct I think that Sullivan was brought in in case mcnam wasn't healthy that too the injury history with kid they don't have anyone else who's a big 10 quarterback based upon what I've heard from people that have actually had conversations with people that uh be careful let's just say I believe it in strongly enough who told me and where it came from that I'm saying it right now on this podcast I don't think that uh lionz is gonna he's not a winning Big 10 quarterback at this juncture of his career uh RAR they just don't have one they don't have one Sullivan was brought in as an emergency quarterback in case M dea's hurt and it ain't like M DEA I mean mamera may be driving the ambulance I mean it's not pretty so what do you see for Iowa uh the rest of this season John you still you said you had at nine wins coming into this season that's what I had did you really okay I I had him at nine wins I had this a loss I had uh UCLA a loss and I had Ohio State a loss I had uh them losing at UCLA as well and I had them losing at Ohio St I Kirk fence going on those West Coast trips you know he are it's already in his mind how much he hates it so I know that that's just not a good mental place even though Kirk doesn't play I I just am concerned now that not seeing consistency from an offense and again this is our level of consistency is just don't suck just be a 100 then I you know maybe they won't be 100 then I'm not saying that it's over canell Christmas this is an offense on par with last season's offense that was the worst of all time I do think this offense is a a pretty big step above last season's offense and the year before agreed so I still think nine and three is heck 10- two could be possible because that defense is still a really really good defense I agree I agree that 10- two is possible I've got him still at nine and three and although we are really pissed and devastated because they blew this game and they they never should have let Iowa State back in it let's also remember that Iowa state is a good team with a great quarterback and great receivers that has a chance to be in the running for a big 12 championship this is not a bad lost there's a reason why this point spread was two and a half or three even at K Stadium this was a tossup Vegas I sitting there all feeling good about it and then of course that's how it ends and you know what again I'm not just saying this I was you know the move to change your punter you ever see Kirk I mean Kirk changed a field goal kicker last year so I'll give him that but like you change your punter out Matt Campbell's team did not get spooked they they they didn't Rattle and if they did they didn't show it maybe Iowa choked too much in the red zone to allow them not to get the kill shot for the rattling Iowa scores one touchdown on those totally different feeling on that Iowa State sideline but they go to the locker room they're down 13 that is an Iowa State football program who has a healthy culture to be able to stay with it come back out fiery in the second half even after that first drive the first drive they didn't do anything they get the turnover they go up top and they make some big things happen so hats off to Iowa State Iowa has some regrouping to do and we all got to lick our wounds for another week if you uh joined us a little bit late and you're on YouTube or the social medias you can you
