offered up a silent prayer for help it had been foolish to venture to an unfamiliar place that some Deandra all told her about without doing more research Riley would flip when she learned that Tess hair against her face and into her eyes she blinked a few times to clear the stinging would you like a ride Caden shouted over the wind she giggled incredulously at the absurdity of the situation and how Caden was acting like this was everyday business if it's not too much trouble Tess responded then winced not too much trouble really they were desperate for Cadence's help she tried to process what was happening had he followed them here to Goat Island yes she was almost positive he had had he rented a kayak when he realized they wouldn't be be able to get back across the rain was coming across one at a time Caden said in a non-nonsense tone let's take you first big man he reached for Noah's hand helping him get seated in the front of the kayak uncertainty clutched Tessa's stomach as she looked across the water at the deserted Beach will Noah be all right by himself wek be able to see him the entire time Kaden assured her he'll be fine she bit her lower lip wanting to protest but knowing there was no other alternative she'd been such a nitwit to get them into this situation she nodded all right Caden gave her a re re assuring smile I promise I'll take good care of him thank hopefully her phone would be okay Tess couldn't worry about that right now she just wanted to get across the water and back to Noah she wished there was more than one paddle so she could help Kaden shoved the kayak into the water and got in behind her the kayak tilted with his movements moving Tessa's body with it finally they were in the the water the current was strong threatening to pull them out to sea but it was no match for Kaden's strength as he sliced the paddle through the water in smooth rhythmic Strokes Tess didn't realize she'd been holding her breath until they reached the Sandy Shore of the beach she exhaled in relief as she got out of the kayak surprised to learn that her legs were shaky Kaden pushed the kayak onto the sand as she grabbed her things she looked at Noah are you okay he nodded but he was shaking all over his lips blew we'll be warm in the car soon she turned to Kaden thank you so much I I don't know what we would have done if you hadn't come I'm glad I Tess paused her hand on the door handle as she tried to compose herself she opened the door a poised smile forming over her lips hey her breath caught as she did a little hiccup laugh Kaden looked fantastic in linen pants and a black button-down shirt he dressed up wow impressive she wondered if the outfit she'd selected was too casual Caden scoped her up and down a faint crease forming between his eyes sorry I'm not dressed yet she stepped back and waved come in I'll be readying a jiffy hey Caden Noah said in a Bor tone his eyes remaining glued to the TV an amused grin quivered at the corners of Kaden's lips that must be some TV show I'm not even sure what he's watching Tess admitted SpongeBob SquarePants Noah supplied in a tone reminiscent of a teacher enlightening dimwitted pupils Cadence's smile widened my favorite cartoon Noah scrunched his nose assessing Kaden with a Keen Eye to see if he was sincere really you bet Noah's face brightened as he looked at Kaden through Hawaii and the tipped ends had grown light in the sun she rather liked the effect large hopeful golden eyes fringed with thick lashes stared back at her you're such a sucker for a good-look guy she said nastily to her reflection she could no more divert her attention away from Caden than a moth could ignore the lure of a flame the big question was would she end up getting zinged by the flame and crumble to dust or would Caden turn out to be the very thing the innermost part of her heart heart had been yearning for chapter 5 Tess dressed up her outfit by adding a chunky necklace and dangly earrings also she put on heeled sandals even though she was only 5' 5 in tall it was crazy the number of guys she towered over when she wore heels she tried to be cognizant of that on dates especially when going on blind dates with guys she met online men often fudged their hide on profile Pages much like women did their weight with Caden however the height thing wasn't a problem right at 6 ft tall Caden was perfect well at least his height was anyway his looks were a 10 and then some his inner qualities were yet to be determined but he did get brownie points for the kayak rescue although Tess needed to get to the bottom of the following her around thing she assumed that in Cadence's profession he did lots of surveillance he probably didn't think twice about applying that to his personal life but it was a bit unusual interesting how the term stalking correlated to the degree that she liked Kaden had another guy followed her around the way Kaden had Tess might have found it creepy but with Kaden she found it flattering Caden's intent seemed to be to keep her safe also he was chaz's brother and an O'Brien the O'Brians were an impressive family Tess loved the association with them such appreciation when he saw her that it sent a bubble of satisfaction over Tess you look fantastic thanks she said demurely batting her eyelashes and then lowering them so that they brushed against her cheekbones the gesture had a 99% success rate of having the opposite sex eating out of the palm of her hand Caden gave her a funny look are you okay she tensed in Surprise yes why it looked like and fun not to mention drop dead gorgeous in a natural Golden Girl way Tess was the patch of clear blue sky and an otherwise Bleak landscape if only he could hold on to these magical moments before the stink of the past seeped in like rotting meat and tainted everything kissing Tess had been a spontaneous gesture one that arose out of the space inside him that he thought was closed off forever satisfied with his life and career never thinking that he would ever wish to be dead however when he lost Becca life as he knew it came to a screeching halt Kaden experienced such dark feelings of Despair that he wondered if they would consume him while he was ashamed to ever admit this to anyone he had at his very lowest wished for death he didn't know how much of his feelings stemmed from the love he lost and how much was plain old guilt knowing that he might have saved her Tess nudged his arm there you go again back down the rabbit hole her voice was teasing but he caught the faint undercurrent of reproof beneath he offered an apologetic smile I'm sorry I guess I'm not the greatest company do I dare ask what morbid thoughts were swirling around in your head Tess had asked the question in a teasing manner but she couldn't have guessed how close she came to the mark morbid was an appropriate description he shuttered grateful that Tess couldn't read his thoughts otherwise she'd realize how broken he was and get as far away from him as she could had he been a better man Kaden would have held strong and kept his distance from Tess knowing that he couldn't promise her any kind of future he didn't believe in dating for the sport of it his motto had always been to never waste time on anything that didn't have the possibility to yield fruit then why was he here now with Tess because he was weak that's why he was wildly attracted to her and didn't have the strength to keep turning her down this isn't going to work his heart sank as he spoke the words even though he knew it would be unfair to string teson why was it so dang hard to do the right thing he half expected her to sulk or get angry but her delicate laughter caught him completely by surprise he gave her a miffed look why are you laughing she shook her head I'm not asking for a kidney or even a ring I just want to go up to the North Shore and see the turtles maybe grab some dinner it's certainly going for home plate the sky was an endless expanse of azure blue with a few toughs of puffy clouds it's it's nice nice she grunted out a laugh that's like someone being handed a new Ferrari and saying it'll do it's incredible and you know it a lopsided grin lifted a corner of his lips Tess's enthusiasm was infectious all right it's great great she exclaimed throwing up her hands it's incredible she rolled down the window and unbuckled her seat belt a trickle of alarm ran through him what are you doing she stuck her head out the window this place is glorious she yelled Paradise she sat back down and buckled her seat belt then pushed her fingers through her hair which was all over the place he laughed you know you really should have your head examined she clucked her tongue yeah that's what all the bores tell me hey he protested I'm not a boar he glanced her Direction her hazel eyes sparkled with daring prove it what he laughed hesitantly feeling somewhat offended I don't farther up the North Shore and stopped at a couple more beaches before ending up in the quaint historic town of haliva where they browsed the shops and got some shavei at a tourist packed shop they took their shave eyes to a nearby beach park where they watched the pink and fiery Orange Sunset next they went to a trendy open air restaurant for dinner where Tess made good on her promise and ordered a large filet minan with a loaded baked potato and salad and a side of lobster now that her stomach was full a warm mellowness settled over Tess thank you that was delicious the flickering flame from the candle in the center of the table emphasized the hard Plains of Cadence's rugged features he was 100% American male with his closely cropped deep auburn hair and light dusting of freckles over his nose Kaden's eyes flashed with a hint of amusement it's hard to believe that a woman your size can put away so much food hey she protested her lips forming a petulant pout no fair you shouldn't judge a woman for what she eats on a date I'm not judging you he said quickly it was a compliment really warmth spread like a ray of sunshine through her as she grinned absolutely I love Grant so it's an older movie yeah but it's been colorized it's amazing you should really see it he sat back in his seat his hand absently fiddling with his napkin all right but only because you
