Aaron Glenn on the Detroit Lions Defensive Standouts

but I'mma have you back on this one you were talking about a defensive line and you were talking about a specific player player that's still on the board and that was Makai Wingo 2024 draft Aaron Glenn has some interesting things to say about player what you talked about CE that up for him for a rookie that you hardly ever see um the worth ethic that he has the um for him to change a technique and go out there and execute exactly the way the de line coach wants him to do it you said that to him so when I look at that Wing go this is what I said it doesn't matter what he do in life he's going to succeed because that's just who he is he could be a CEO of of a company he could be a big- time football player it doesn't matter he's going to be successful High Praise for your got maai Wingo Anon yeah that's I mean that's an absolute gift out of the sixth round we were talking during the break that we didn't think that he would be there we were live in here doing the show for the day three of the draft and when they announced his name I figured he was already off the board this is a guy that played in the SEC at a very very high level I think all of us expected him to go earlier but the thing that sticks out for me is everything that AG just said there is what they're looking for in terms of culture now with the Detroit Lions so this guy's fitting into their system culturally but he's making plays as well yeah and then M it comes back to you you've been talking about Tyrell Williams in addition him his coaching staff for a minute now he's got a rookie guy to M that seems to want to do it exactly as how Williams says what is that going to do for this young man I know man it's uh he's he couldn't be in a better spot he could not have been picked by a better team and he's not going to be coached by anybody better than what the Lions have in store I watched the hard KNX Bears last night I was a day behind but uh they got some stuff going on over there too man but it made me it made me yearn for the Lions Hard Knocks and when I watch that hard knocks man uh it gets you psyched it gets you so pumped up as a bear fan I would be really pumped up this hard knocks I I still enjoy it bro I know it had we had a lull remember we start getting a little bit bored with it and all but I just love it I love uh how they do it who they who they show you uh some of the guys trying to make the team and it it's it's it's hard man to make a team like this and as a sixth round pick besides Tom Brady you got to fight your way who wasn't really of course not you got to fight to make a team like this you really got to do cuz there's not a lot spots on this team how many are they going to keep how many defensive lineman are they going to keep how many linebackers how many secondary are going to keep are they going to keep three four quarterbacks two kickers running backs it's tough to make this team how many practice squad hopefuls are going to get scooped by other teams something that we had to do for what the last two decades picking guys trash and making them into Treasures for us there's going to be a lot of guys that we're hoping to squeeze over to that PS team and they're not going to make it yeah 100% you know the Lions have been one of those teams in the past you know where you're looking at the San Francisco who makes it I mean who didn't get picked up by San Fran who didn't get picked up by the Eagles who didn't get picked up by the Chiefs now you're one of those teams that people are looking to see what you guys uh didn't put on your squad these guys can play you talked about the secondary as well those are the two positions that we wanted everybody to get better at that's we wanted the Lions to upgrade that position we saw what the playoffs was as it related to the secondary and we saw how the end of the season was related to that def defensive line defensive line M Wingo now Aaron Glenn talks about a defensive secondary player in Kirby Joseph you always need a for safety anyway and most of those guys are special Team guys too so um the thing that that bejo brings to this team is um he's a very very heady player he understands this game inside and out he's almost like an extra coach on there so um when he's out there with the younger players he's able to like direct those guys and what we're doing and how we're doing and he's been here um for a good enough time to be able to understand that so he's done a really good job of making plays as we all seen in practice and in games um but that's no surprise even for that player he's a hey play number 40 Brandon Joseph he had a pickoff he had an interception in that game against the Giants first I see Joseph on the back and I'm like what the hell's Kirby Joseph wearing number 44 then oh n it's Brandon Joseph and here's a guy at Aaron Glenn's like he's been around here long enough that he becomes a leader here on this team and they love what he brings that's some great depth pieces in that secondary you lose a guy like Mosley unfortunately he's got the injury bug now you need a guy like here he is it's Brandon Joseph let's plug him in what I like about this Pete and what you speak on this is you you you don't see this anymore in the four major sports you don't have those guys at the end of the bench whether it's basketball where you have the older veteran guys like um y Udonis hasm or R Wallace did for a while or you know U Jamal Crawford and football you don't have these guys cuz every is Young everything is Young it's good to have these guys because they can help your team out especially when you're young as the Detroit Lions it's also good to have Aaron Glen really he mean we talk all the time about the cornerbacks well now let's talk about the safeties and there's nobody better that I'd rather have coaching these the secondary than Aaron Glenn and he really is the next NFL head coach out there and we are lucky that we were able to keep him during the off season with all the teams that were after him him and Ben John of course but Aaron Glen he really is going to be the key to the Lions winning the Super Bowl it all goes through the defense and it's going to come down to Aaron Glenn's game plan with that secondary let's sck in the secondary for a minute everybody talks on the opposite side on offense everybody's so excited to see Jameson Williams so excited about what they're hearing out of Camp uh and we've seen like yesterday he made a heck of a play and you know when you look at online the clips said unbelievable touchdown now come on calm down it wasn't that but it was a damn good catch he got his two feet in and got a knee in as as well and got a snow cone in afterwards and he just 100% he just looks comfortable that's the player most that we keep talking about there's a player on defense that I'm super and this is the catch Pete preach at you bringing that up and I look at the energy out of jamus I love this now I'm a coach you know what I'm not going to tell him to turn it down and the reason I'm not I want him to turn up because I understand that emotion I understand what he's feeling I understand he needs this season to happen he's been waiting for it he's been waiting to take off with the Detroit Lions so I don't even mind that but there's another player on defense that I'm eagerly excited about he's in the secondary he went to the same school and we haven't heard a lot about him so far in K it's Brian Branch it's Brian Branch the honey brancher it Brian Branch injury you can do so much with coming back from that injury which I still don't really have know what it still don't know what it was but that's a player M I know that's youry a lower body injury L by all we got Dr Pierce will be in today so maybe we'll get a get a read from him but uh you know and mass m I know that's your guy oh yeah you talked about him getting drafted that second day in stand so he can walk that stage he's a guy that I think they could do a lot with no doubt man I'm looking forward to him and he had his his coming out party remember last year opening day against the Chiefs who they play again on Saturday you know guys like him man they don't grow on trees they they know they do it Alabama seem that's what I mean but they know they go to Iowa let's pick two or three Iowa guys let's go to Alabama let's pick three or four Alabama guys let's go to Michigan let's pick a couple of Michigan guys the Lions the way they draft there is a method to their Madness finally after all these years there's no more reaches there's no more galani Tavis on the you know the second round or third round I forgot which round they that they reached and picked him not that he's not bad he's pretty good for the Patriots all these uh since he left since he left here and uh they even resigned him but there's no more reaches there no more shocks when ESPN is and NFL network is doing a draft they don't have to Scuttle oh who who's this guy that they just drafted no or be on commercial break if anything like you said with maai Wingo they steal players the guy that they took from Canada we'll see how he we'll see what kind of off was the one reach I felt that they made we'll see what the old we'll see what he does he's a big monster of a man but he's earned those guys have earned our confidence in guys that we're not familiar with so with Manu coming in this is somebody that most teams be like what the heck are you doing and now we're like I can't wait to see this guy me too and he was in on third he was in against the Giants every when he came in I had my eye on him on that offensive line know he's Lear straight pressures or sacks he's learning he's learning yeah he's pretty raw but he's he's got a he's got the size inredible football body holyo [Music]
