this was after months of speculation the success of the Angry Birds tune series according to roio employee John Le validated the idea of creating a feature film the first image from the film was revealed in October 2014 with Jason sudakis Josh Gad Danny McBride Bill haer Maya Rudolph and Peter Dinklage revealed to be part of its cast Gad at first refused to star in the movie feeling that it was too similar to his role as Olaf in Frozen 2013 but the director eventually convinced him to sign through a 30-minute visual pitch the film's budget is estimated at $80 million $75 million roio and Sony Pictures announced that they would spend roughly € 100 million for the marketing and distribution of the film giving it the largest budget in the film industry in Finland out valuing big games 2014 8.5 million despite the massive budget roio CEO Mel headed stated that it is the one that I don't ever lose any sleep over calling it tremendously strong as a story during August 2015 roio announced that they were expecting to cut 250 jobs equaling 40% of the company the only sector spared being Personnel working on the movie when multiple major Studios approached roio to discuss the production of the film adaptation in 2010 had eventually decided to have roio establish its own in-house Animation studio and have it work on the film rather than risk losing creative control in allowing a third-party Studio to produce it David masel the founding chairman of Marvel Studios offered to help headed and roio produce the film as well as John Cohen from illumination entertainment and Katherine Winder from lucasfilm who later served as the film's producers animation Services were handled by Sony Pictures image Works in Vancouver while Skywalker sound handled audio post Production Services The Angry Birds character were not depicted in their anthropomorphized cinematic designs until the film's announcement so as to avoid spoiling it for audiences marketing the film's million reception on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes 44% of 160 critics reviews are positive with an average rating of 510 the website's critical consensus reads The Angry Birds movie is substantially more entertaining than any film adapted from an app has any right to be which may or may not be much of an endorsement Metacritic which uses awaited average assigned the film a score of 43 out of 100 based on 27 critics indicating mixed or average reviews audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of B+ on an A plus to f scale Lindsay of the Associated Press gave the film a positive review by writing ultimately The Angry Birds movie does a decent job exploring the merits of anger it's no inside out but it has heart and life which isn't too shabby for any film app or not variey guy Lodge called the film a fast fizzy and frenetically entertaining extension of the manic gaming franchise that at its Zenith had children of all ages glued to their smartphone screens while Rafer Guzman of Newsday found the film's plot to be pretty thin GRL he thought the script was quite funny and that the animation was brightly colored and appealing Glenn Kenny of the New York Times gave the film a negative review writing the kids of today deserve better so do I come to think of it in his review for thp Alonso deraldo wrote Let's be clear then the Angry Birds movie isn't pointless because it's based on an app it's pointless because it's pointless sequel in August 2016 roio had begun working on a sequel to the film the sequel titled The Angry Birds movie 2 was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on August 2nd 2019 and later on August 14th in the United States coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the original game it was directed by thurop Van Orman and John rice Cohen returned as producer with Peter acrian Isle podal and Jonathan e Steward as writers sudakis Gad hater McBride Dinklage Rudolph hail and Padilla return to voice their roles with Mickey Minaj Rachel Bloom Sterling Kay Brown Eugenio durbz Zack Woods Aquafina Lil real howy Dove Cameron Beck Bennett Tiffany hadish Brooklyn Prince and lesie Jones joining the cast The Angry Birds movie movie review I am a grown woman who has played a Facebook version of Angry Birds since its Inception judge me if you must but suddenly that wasted time has come in somewhat handy now that the inevitable The Angry Birds movie has landed I compete against strangers in weekly tournaments by launching flightless birds of varying shapes Hues and special combative Powers via a slingshot and aiming them at snorty green pigs if you ask me which one is my favorite bird I would pick bomb voiced by Danny McBride in the film because you know explosions and I become an angry lady whenever my ranking slips from the gold league to Silver do I care if the birds have personalities or Back stories not really I just want these Furious fowl to smash into the obnoxious little green porkers while racking up a big score it's a very shallow relationship but probably the longest one I have had with a game since I spent an entire summer try trying to beat my friend Angela at lawn darts The Angry Birds movie isn't a total turkey the animation itself is okay and I did laugh out loud once when a poem written by bomb rhymed hate with detonate but it sure has a surfit of derivative stuffing amid all the Frantic chaos in an attempt to distract from the fact that there isn't much that's inventive or even funny here instead of Simply catapulting Myriad puns bathroom related jokes and a hodge PGE of soundtrack songs a Limp Biscuit cover of the who somber Behind Blue Eyes and ton Lock's sexy Wild Thing alongside Demi Lovato's spritely rendition of I Will Survive and a brand new Blake Shelton ho down number onto the screen the makers of this glorified promotion for a phone app should have followed the Let's Go Crazy model set forth by the Lego movie instead of elevating The Angry Bird's concept to surreal Heights of insane genius the filmmakers settle for a tale bogged down by familiar themes plucked from much better films in the Scrat inspired Opening Our Hero red Jason sudakis speaking for the game's most ineffectual Pig attacker races through a jungle on Bird Island carrying an egg-shaped object that holds a cake while encountering obstacles that inflict bodily abuse turns out he is a party clown for hire with a short fuse who misses a deadline for delivering the hatch day treat he gets violent ly mad when his customers aren't pleased and the law gets involved sentencing him to you guested an anger management class it's there where he meets bomb and Chuck a speedy big beak yellow bird Josh Gad AKA Olaf the snowman from Frozen and Terren the game's rotund red bird who mainly elicits guttural responses in the manner of lurch from The Adams Family TV show that this round mound of moroseness is voiced by an actor with a rep for hot headed outbursts Shawn Penn is as clever as the Angry Bird movie gets we also meet the token lead female character the game's butt bombing white bird known as Matilda Maya Rudolph a Comm zen-like instructor who will eventually summon her Inner Warrior meanwhile we learned that red was subjected to cruel mockery as a child much of it aimed at his Eugene Levy siiz bushy black brows his downbeat attitude doesn't help him fit in with a cheery flop block of fellow Island dwellers who shun him as an outsider his skepticism reaches New Heights when a pair of pigs the smooth talking Leonard Bill hater and his piglet siiz sidekick Ross Tony hail arrives in a pirate-like boat while the other birds buy Into The porene Intruders offer of friendship red goes into Chicken Little mode as he realizes the pigs want to kidnap their eggs in other words their children but everyone else is having too much fun partying down with the Intruders to notice that is a rather grave premise to stick into the middle of a movie aimed at youngsters but perhaps even more concerning is a comic low light involving a washed up Mythic figure and one-time hero known as mighty eagle Peter Dinklage he's a wizard of A's type whose rep for greatness is currently undeserved his most memorable contribution a rather off-putting depiction of the Aged bird relieving himself for what seems to be an eternity into a lake where bomb and Chuck have just been frolicking much to their disgust the finale results in a free for all that basically emulates the actual game in frenetic fashion but the real assault is the number of lame word play gags aimed at the audience when a fish attaches himself to Reds behind he issues this insult bottom feeder when an endless line of hatchlings fill up a crosswalk and block Red's way his response is have you ever thought of bird control then there are the jokes that pop up in passing a poster for Kevin Bacon in Hamlet a book titled 50 Shades of Green a ham radio a sign for free rage chicken a pig version of the twin girls from The Shining and the all to expected green ham and eggs reference as well as a side mention of John Ham however the Angry Birds movie did leave me wondering if something deeper was implied as the birds are eventually won over by r and adopt his get mad stance as they finally fight back is the film attempting to do to anger what inside out did for sadness in other words legitimize the emotion for children maybe especially when a scene materialized at the end that suggested a sequel is possible now that really fires up my ey red is a grumpy bird who often lets his temper get the best of him this anger leads to a court ruling that requires him to attend Ang management classes where he meets a bunch of other ill-tempered birds and he has to commit to calming exercises while the other patients are eager to socialize red would prefer to keep to himself pushing away new potential friendships one day a community of pigs dock off at the bird's Island introducing themselves as harmless new friends but really they want to steal all the bird's eggs red is the only one who sees through their sham even though everyone else is convinced that these swine mean well so The Feathered Grouch has to convince his fellow birds that these Piggies mean trouble I've only played an Angry Birds game once it was 3 or 4 years ago I can't even recall which game it was so I'm no expert or loyal fan but one doesn't need to be when it comes to critiquing movie adaptations a film is a film regardless of what inspired it the Angry Birds movie is certainly high-spirited with its boun Wy paced comedy and colorful character designs but as a movie it's pretty myth its story is as predictable as they come we know that the pigs are really up to no good we know that they'll reveal their true intentions eventually and it's more than obvious that the birds will seek revenge once the cat is out of the bag until then we're playing the waiting game counting the minutes until the Rouse is exposed with nothing much happening besides the pigs dist rting the birds with dance parties and it's all pretty much filler to say the least to also pass time red and his friends venture to find the legendary Mighty Eagle which leads to the cliche plot of discovering that a hero is a let down who wastes his days doing nothing and it's up to Red to motivate the eagle back into action how many times have we seen this plot maybe in nearly every average animated kids movie and this is what's going to keep us entertained until the finale thanks I don't like it the humor is hit or miss a few lines and gags hit the mark but this wasn't a consistent laugh Riot for me the film is clearly struggling to keep the comedy alive so it reaches for easy gags in desperation the kinds of jokes that are obviously going to make small kids giggle no matter what from pigs slapping their butts at the camera to an awkwardly long urination scene this potty humor is just tasteless and gross a lazy attempt to be funny without taking risks or being inventive The Angry Birds movie is at its most imaginative when the birds finally attack the pigs in a climax that resembles the playthrough of the original video games the very thing that fans came to see the movie for this is when we get to see each bird displaying a unique power crashing into Towers in a satisfyingly destructive fashion all while the villain runs around in a panic unfortunately this sequence overstays its welcome overdoing the novelty of watching Birds smashing into buildings and even young kids might get tired of the repetition red himself is the only character I enjoyed watching a cynical bird who makes the most sense out of everyone he keeps others at a distance while yearning for company making for a relatable lead he might be a grouch but hints of a nice side are sprinkled into little moments and he does eventually let his guard down once pushed into the role of leader proving that he is capable of empathy if others trust him the lesson he learns is surprisingly unconventional too teaching that anger can be justified when the situation calls for it but controlling your temper is just as important that's a pretty risky Philosophy for a kid's film the idea that what you do with your anger is your real test of character what can it be translated to how much of it should you let out Ang is a complex emotion it's refreshing to see a children's film address it without saying bottle it up inside the side characters though they're pretty one-dimensional and annoying including bomb the whiny bird with the one trait of exploding Chuck the super fast bird that is only defined by his speed and hyperactive personality imagine hammy from Over the Hedge just unfunny and less sympathetic Terren grunted by an underused Shawn pen which is admittedly funny is kind of endearing in his own gentle giant sort of way but I can't say that he's a well-defined character Beyond his grunts the villain Leonard is far from threatening or clever being not exactly subtle about his intentions he's just lucky that these birds have been written conveniently dumb enough to fall for his plans to conclude The Angry Birds movie does have a pretty solid lead character vibrant cartoony visuals that are decent to look at plus a rather complex view on the emotion of anger that's quite refreshing but overall it's cliche predictable uninspired and not as frequently funny as it could have been I wasn't exactly let down as I was never an Angry Birds fan in the first place so I can't say that I'm annoyed at my experience but I also can't say that this is a film I'd be eager to watch again other information about this film agreeability gets you so far in life but when the chip are down it helps to lose your temper sometimes that's a pretty unexpected moral takeaway for a kid's movie and it's just one surprise of many in The Angry Birds movie a fast fizzy and phenetically entertaining extension of the manic gaming franchise that at its Zenith had children of all ages glued to their smartphone screens establishing a basic psychological motivation for the fiery disposition shared by The Feathered folk of Bird Island this irreverent origin story takes an appropriately loose elastic approach to its larger narrative with frequent detours to fill in dafier details of its mad mad mad mad story world the result machine tooled and technically lustrous as it is more or less matches the bouncy anarchic Spirit of the game debuted in 2009 by Finnish Corporation roio entertainment while not quite as inspired or subversive as the Lego movie it's a comparably cheering standout in the generally cynical gallery of product inspired product at every creative level it certainly knocks the fluorescent spots off the harmless but charmless Ratchet and Clank video game adaptation that recently hit theaters for first time feature directors clay Cates and fergo Riley both longtime Studio animators with major Disney and Warner Bros credits to their names it's an impressive step up to the plate from the reach out and touch the screen PL Ness of theonomous creatures plumage to the carefully considered 3D design the film is a frequently dazzling feat of craftsmanship saturated in tropical oil pastel Shades if the Angry Birds movie arguably arrives a couple of years past the pop cultural peak of its source material the finished film justifies roio's avoidance of a quicker cash in effort brightly accessible to viewers who have never so much as tapped the app it could easily found a big screen franchise of its own if anything the high gloss beauty of the production sits slightly at odds with the gleefully Scrappy approach of writer John vidy The Simpsons Alvin and the Chipmunks whose hell for feather screenplay catapult fires a barrage of stray media references coarse sight gags and deliciously terrible puny at viewers rendering the game's simple Birds versus Pig's narrative motor practically incidental a break neck pre-edit sequence Zips through the Lush iridescent foliage of Bird Island a Peaceable Kingdom of complacently flightless fowl introducing its hapless heavy brow hero red sparkly voiced by Jason sud's mid assignment as an inauspiciously cranky children's entertainer an ensuing bout of Aven rage against his employer lands the apply colored red already a social outcast in his otherwise Jolly community in court where he's handed the islands maximum penalty anger management classes with new age why therapist Matilda Maya Rudolph she builds herself as a free rage chicken if that tickles you prepare to Guff a consistently for 97 minutes there red aligns with characters who will be familiar to viewers of spin-off TV series Angry Birds tunes hyperactive [ __ ] of the Walk Chuck Josh Gad potentially explosive dim bulb bomb Danny McBride and menacing in articulate lok's Terrance given a low steady growl by Shawn Penn the Prest casting pick of the film's allstar voice Ensemble their combined Antics consume a fun but somewhat distracted first third greater focus and tension arrive with a ship full of visitors from distant piggy Island bearing slingshots fruit baskets and a penchant for Blake Shelton music these green skinned porkers claim to come in peace with only red unpopular questioning their Goodwill experienced Angry Birds players will know he's right to be wary more than anything these grunting Invaders crave a delicacy that a dyslexic doctor seus might pair with green ham eggs though Bird Island is already heavily anthropomorphized complete with woodcarved selfies and mother chick yoga classes the mutually marauding Antics that ensue pit the pigs as vulgarly humanoid egg guzzling antagonists to their unspoiled Idol there's an environmentalist allegory to be drawn from their Showdown not that the filmmakers are overly concerned with such subtext given such a merry array of oneand done jokes and equally disposable plot aides to charge through the Angry Birds movie knows it's about the candy colored details rather than any bigger picture viewers May well have forgotten what even happened before the closing credits diversions suitably soundtracked to Demi levado Sugar Rush cover of I Will Survive are through but the most outlandish gags will stick longest the best of them all inv involving a doing mama bird regurgitating food into her children's lunch boxes at least injects a modicum of biological accuracy into this high-f flown fantasy at least a few worthwhile life lesson however survive this otherwise infectiously inconsequential Whirlwind not least its defense of the occasional black mood amid a riot of color why do we have to agree red pleads with his Stepford Sunny bird Brethren why does it matter that we're not all the same such statements combined with a Ry subplot involving gone to seed bird leader Mighty Eagle Peter Dinklage that warns of the dangers and disappointments of hero worship make a welcome stand for individual thought and expression hardly the first outcome you'd expect from a film based on such a hypnotizing gaming phenomenon impressionable Tikes can do what they will with such messages some parents should be warned may never eat scrambled eggs again positive elements red and the other Angry Birds do bravely save some eggs that the pigs plan on gobbling and once they get back home we see how the eggs hatch into scores of cute little chicks reminding us that every life is valuable the bird Community responds by welcoming the ostracized red back into town after his heroic turn spiritual elements a councelor uses the spiritually minded word neast a bird makes a quip about cardinal in sexual content after the town's eggs are stolen Chuck suggests that they should replace them while thrusting his hips and saying ladies get busy there are several other similar sexual innuendo quips in the mix and then there's this a pair of toilet bowl plungers are used as a bikini top of sorts for a partying Pig celebrating pigs slap backsides Chuck imagines a hero called the Great Eagle as a male stripper the camera swooping in on his flexing backside the Great Eagle uses binoculars to spy on an older woman taking a mud bath violent content the pigs repeatedly talk about wanting to make omelets and other egg Delicacies out of the stolen eggs it's a travesty made all the more uncomfortable by the anthropomorphized nature of the birds and their cute little hatchlings there's also quite a bit of cartoony slapstick humor throughout this pick red is bashed and pummeled from beginning to end and other birds are battered as well the birds also use their ability to take a thump by hurdling themselves via slingshot into and through the pigs buildings the pigs return the favor by throwing dynamite in the end the pig city is decimated by an enormous explosion and the bird town is pretty much burned to the ground crude or profane language otherwise innocent words such as flock and pluck are substituted for some pretty severe swears at least twice the phrase son of a is left just unfinished the same goes for what the fart face is written on a pig's stomach we hear butt dummy and heck a running joke features repeated uses of oh my God as its laugh line other negative elements toilet humor gags are tossed about willy-nilly for example a character urinates as part of his morning routine into Lake water that others gargle with somebody shoots Fireballs out of her backside and a motherb bird regurgitates for her children's lunch sacks red cries out about his aching giblets when hit in the crotch conclusion the things of Life can make you angry so you should use that anger to get revenge that's the lesson Angry Birds has in its cinematic beak and it's a fairly mly one if you ask me especially when you're handing it out to kids who already have a natural tendency of wanting to thump anybody who swipes a toy or two on the playground but what more were we expecting from a cartoon based on a phone app that shoots myff birds at pigs sure this chucka chick kid's pick is colorful and it launches some cute characters at the screen and some folks will be able to see some sort of anti-bullying statement in it if they squint their eyes and take just the right aim but well I tend to get a bit grumpy about Kitty movies that feature cartoon characters using adult word puns as their main source of Giggles such as this pick's use of a fierce call out for some Angry flocking Birds or the discouraged sigh pluck my life can't I at least cry foul over that more details there's some real nice texturing that's what there is I mean real nice Textures in the extreme close-ups of the birds bodies of which there aren't all that many but enough to make the point you can see feathers that have been individually delineated and even barbs that have been individually delineated all of them moving slightly differently which I guess isn't texturing technically it's even more impressive than Simply Good texturing but anyways you could get lost in those feathers it's miraculously good right up at the level that any studio in the business of 3D CGI animated movies in 2016 is capable of God bless those feathers and I'm spent that's all I've got that's nice to say about the Angry Birds movie based on the 29 smartphone game that was all the rage in 2010 and 2011 The Angry Birds movie would have been terrible even if it managed to come out during the period of time when Society might have been interested in it instead it's both terrible and deeply pathetic the script by John vidy a veteran of not one but two mvin and the Chipmunks pictures so he knows what's upd draws from the deepest well of cliches of what children's Cinema can be and do marries that to for the parents gags that are objectionable in every way and naturally enough drags itself to the point where it recreates the gameplay of Angry Birds in something resembling an appropriate narrative context I'm being harsh truth be told the point at which the film spends about 6 or 8 minutes recreating the game is done pretty substantially well well in the disreputable anals of movies based upon video games I can't offhand think of one that recreates the specifics of its source material with such happy Verve nope there sure as hell is a giant slingshot and birds are launched from that slingshot towards a series of rickety wooden structures full of green pigs destroying the structures and clobbering the pigs some of the birds have unique abilities like blowing up or shooting luminous egg like projectiles the film is content not to explain why the movie is in effect a prequel to the game there is an Island full of birds bird Island where everybody is tremendously happy The Only Exception is red Jason sudakis not trying in the slightest a sullen misanthrop mavian who lives alone on the beach and responds to the endless cheery exhortations of the other birds with withering sarcasm and self- superiority you could almost go so far as to call Red an Angry Bird if you don't have no fear the movie is indecently happy to do it for you red has a job as a children's clown of course because he's Sullen nihilist and one particularly unpleasant runin with a client lands him in court where the owl judge Keegan Michael Key apparently the only representative of any sort of government on Bird Island sentences him to the most severe punishment available in that Society anger management class he here red meets four of those novelty Birds yellow Chuck Josh Gad moves fast Black Bomb Danny McBride explodes when he gets angry and Terren sha Penn for the tiny number of non-verbal utterances the character is given is enormous and Surly the class is taught by the overclocked White Bird Matilda Maya Rudolph please understand this whole entire Act of the film exists solely to motivate the title when the time comes to save the day outcast red will have to find a way to use the exact trait that makes him an outcast in order to inspire the rest of his community to follow his lead against their common enemy that whole boilerplate bull crap I don't suppose that the whole the thing that makes you different from other people is actually what makes you important line is necessarily awful though Lord knows it gets trotted out far too often in far too many generic Kitty flicks but when the specific argument is in favor of being ill-tempered and prone to Violent outbursts it's weird I sh call it bad but it sure as hell is weird So eventually Bird Island is visited by a mechanized pirate ship full of green pigs led by the charismatic bloard Leonard Bill hater and everybody but red greets them with open arms he alone thinks something reeks to high heaven and of course he's right and here's the point where your personal politics along with how uncharitable you want to be towards the movie dictate whether this is a metaphor for immigration or colonialism either way the pigs are bad news and when they obcon to piggy island with all of the birds nests it's up to Red to save the day by making his ridiculously cheerful neighbors learn how to be Angry Birds this is all utter trash of course far above and beyond how lifelessly formulaic it is the humor is repulsively bottom feeding lots of snot gags including one of about people sneezing right into your popcorn and all over your face at the movies which seems like literally the worst possible joke to put into a project that people are going to watch at commercial movie theaters a lot of it is about sex in a really elliptical but tremendously gross way you know for the parents frequently the film jams on the brakes for a musical interlude Andor Montage including a mystifying Cowboy themed review the pigs put on for no obvious reason other than because the producers had arranged for country artist Blake Shelton to contribute an original song and something needed to motivate it that's still closer to the best song cue than the worst in a soundtrack that includes sound of doiss and Rock You Like a Hurricane this movie was made for Pines in 2016 the worst part of it all is a cover of The Who Behind Blue Eyes recorded by Limp Biscuit that has existed for 13 years and yet I was completely unaware of it until Angry Birds came along to despoil my innocence [ __ ] Angry Birds hardly any member of the cast gives a [ __ ] the reliably shrill Gad is the only one of the leads who feels like he's putting any effort into his character's personality and the only actually good performance is by Peter Dinklage as the brag art demigod Mighty Eagle the film also manages to waste a whole lot of TV comedy ringers Hannibal buus Kate McKinnon Jillian Bell Tony hail tittis Burgess and Ike baren Holtz all pop up to voice characters with as few as two or three lines still and all the film is derivative crap with no intentions but to insult the audience of the children stuck watching it but it looks okay it's a collaboration between Sony image works and the newly formed theatrical animation wing of roio the company that made the game in the first place and while it's obviously the case that roio isn't making another movie ever again because in a kind and loving Universe there of course will not be a sequel to this film shut up I'm trying optimism I can't say I'd mind if there was the film has bold attractive colors and interestingly varied character designs on the birds the pigs are ugly as Sin but even they're kind of well animated all squishy and rubbery I mean to say by all of this the problem with the Angry Birds movie isn't that it's ugly it's actually pretty solid animation that is all it is but it's something let me preface this review by stating that I hold no disdain towards the Angry Bird movie because it's based on a mobile game I know most reviews of the film will be cluttered with complaints and snarky commentary on how Hollywood has run out of ideas and is turning to mobile games of all places for inspiration I honestly don't care at this point where Hollywood gets their ideas as long as they produce something of quality for example The Lego Movie sounds like a wasteland of creative bankruptcy yet it was one of the cleverest creative and Charming films to be released in years The Angry Birds movie doesn't come close to reaching the dizzying heights of The Lego Movie at its best it's a mild diversion from boredom at its worst it's a repetitive slog of puns I like puns just as much as the next person but a 97-minute film can't rely on them to provide the bulk of its jokes simply replacing a common term and making it foul grows tiresome very quickly birthday becoming hatch day natural child birth becoming natural child hatch and birth control becoming bird control are worth a chuckle but nothing substantial to rely on constantly John vidy is credited for writing the screenplay though I reckon Becky Lynch was a ghost writer the only other humor comes from the anger of the protagonist red Jason sudakis granted he comes off as mildly annoyed as opposed to angry most of the time but he has his fits of Rage after losing his cool on a family that won't pay for their gluten-free hatch Day cake red accidentally cracks open one of their eggs prompting their newborn to mistake red for its father the town judge Keegan Michael Key orders him to attend anger management this is where he meets Chuck Josh Gad a hyperactive bird version of Quicksilver bomb Danny McBride a bird who literally blows up when angry and Terence Shawn Penn a silent Menace who secretly has a heart of gold and a crush on the instructor the direction by fergo Riley and Clay Katie is aimless for a while banking on bird puns and jokes at the expense of Red's anger to carry the film it's once the green pigs arrive that the story finally picks up the pigs convince the town that they're explorers looking to make friends with the birds red is suspicious and tries to convince the town that they're up to no good but to no avail despite his rude dismissal of the two Chuck and bomb accompany read on his quest to track down Mighty Eagle Peter Dinklage a mystical bird that is the only one on the island that can actually fly Mighty Eagle is entirely pointless to the film serving only as a false idol to Red the lonely and bullied red grew up idolizing Mighty Eagle despite children picking on him for believing in an urban legend it turns out Mighty Eagle is real but is a wackadoodle as red puts it while the actual purpose of the character is for red to find the hero inside of himself the real reason seems to be to have a lame musical number where he dances around like a buffoon there's also a gross out gag that feels more at home in neighbors too than in Angry Birds where Mighty Eagle is caught urinating in the water that Chuck and bomb were previously drinking out of it's a gross gag but it made me laugh so it's got that going for it Riley and kades eventually get the film back on track and reveals that the pigs are secretly stealing the bird's eggs for a big Feast they sail off to their island with the eggs and toe leaving the town's Birds to apologize to red and beg for his help he concocts a plan to build their own boat sail over to the pig's Island then launch themselves at their base in in order to retrieve their eggs it's at this point the film finally becomes the tower simulation game that it's based off of and it is admittedly Charming albeit brief each bird finds their own ability to exploit with the anger management instructor having the best and most random ability she can fart out fireworks how long until the Avengers recruit a superhero who can fart out fireworks I mentioned The Lego Movie earlier as an example of a license property being adapted into a smart and uplifting story The Angry Birds movie never quite reaches its potential but at least there's an attempt where the director struggles to create a worthwhile and engaging story he does his best to instill heart and a message into the mix it's not revealed until the final act so it doesn't resonate as strongly as it should but at least there is one that message being that one must manage their anger and use it to their advantage all the while working with and trusting others it's not a wholly original message but it's a serviceable one The Angry Birds movie is a 2016 animated comedy film based on Roo entertainment's video game series of the same name produced by Columbia Pictures and roio animation and distributed by Sony Pictures releasing the film was directed by Clay Cades and fergo Riley in their feature directorial debuts from a screenplay written by John vidy and a story by Mikel headed Miko Perle and co-producer John Cohen it stars the voices of Jason sudakis J Josh Gad Danny McBride slingshot but red becomes suspicious of the pig's motives and sneaks into Leonard's boat he finds more pigs hidden below deck contradicting Leonard's claim that he and Ross are alone when he returns and shows everyone the other pigs the birds accept Leonard's explanation that he only lied to see if Bird Island was safe for his simple-minded cousins still suspecting that there is something off about the pigs red recruits Chuck and bomb to find mighty eagle bird Islands missing protector and the only bird who can fly they find Mighty Eagle on top of Eagle Mountain but he has become an overweight self-absorbed slacker who has not flown for years red discovers the pigs planting Dynamite around the island he realizes that the the pigs are planning to steal the bird's eggs while the the city's Castle most of the birds miss the castle but destroy other buildings red Chuck and bomb are successfully shot into the castle the pigs plan to lower the eggs into a giant pot cook them and eat them Mighty Eagle arrives to retrieve Red's group and the eggs having had a change of heart one egg falls out of the net and red battles Leonard for it but learns to control his anger and distracts him long enough to retrieve the egg after they fall into a dynamite room Leonard accidentally ignites the pig's reserve of dynamite the giant pot in which the pigs had intended to use to cook the eggs collapses Falls and lands on top of red the dynamite explodes destroying the city but red and the Egg he was holding are shielded by the pot all the families except for one reunite with that they could lose faith in him and find faith in themselves and takes credit for saving the eggs red discovers that the other birds have rebuilt his house in the center of the village the pigs survive their home's destruction and Leonard plots a new plan voice cast Jason sudakis as red Aiden McGraw as young red Josh Gad as Chuck Danny McBride as bomb Maya Rudolph as Matilda poppy Shawn Penn 2012 although I noted that this was after months of speculation the success of the Angry Birds tune series according to roio employee jamy Le's validated the idea of creating a feature film the first image from the film was revealed in October 2014 with Jason sudakis Josh Gad Danny McBride Bill hater Maya Rudolph and Peter Dinklage revealed to be part of its cast Gad at first refused to star in the movie feeling that it was too similar to his role as Olaf in Frozen 2013 but the director eventually convinced him to sign through a 30-minute visual pitch the film's budget is estimated at $80 million 75 million EUR roio and Sony Pictures announced that they would spend roughly € 100 million for the marketing and distribution of the film giving it the largest budget in the film industry in Finland out valuing big games 2014 8.5 million EUR despite the massive budget roio CEO Mel headed stated that it is the one that I don't ever lose any sleep over calling it tremendously strong as a story during August 2015 roio announced that they were expecting to cut 250 jobs equaling 40% of the company the only sector spared being Personnel working on the movie when multiple major Studios approached roio to discuss the production of the film adaptation in 2010 had eventually decided to have Rio establish its own in-house Animation studio and have it work on the film rather than risk losing creative control in allowing a thirdparty studio to produce it David mael the founding chairman of Marvel Studios offered to help headed and roio produce the film as as well as John Cohen from illumination entertainment and Katherine Winder from lucasfilm who later served as the film's producers animation Services were handled by Sony Pictures image Works in Vancouver while Skywalker sound indicating mixed or average reviews audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of B+ on an A plus to f scale Lindsay bar of the Associated Press gave the film a positive review by writing ultimately The Angry Birds movie does a decent job exploring the merits of anger it's no inside out but it has heart and life which isn't too shabby for any film app or not variety's guy Lodge called the film a fast fizzy and frenetically entertaining extension of the manic gaming franchise that at its Zenith had children of all ages glued to their smartphone screens while Rafer Guzman of Newsday found the film's plot to be pretty thin GRL he thought the script was quite funny and that the animation was brightly colored and appealing Glenn Kenny of the New York Times gave the film a negative review writing the kids of today deserve better so do I come to think of it in his review for thp Alonso deraldo wrote Let's be clear then the Angry Birds movie isn't pointless because it's based on an app it's pointless because it's pointless sequel in August 2016 roio had begun working on a sequel to the film the sequel titled The Angry Bird Movie 2 was released in the United Kingdom K Brown Eugenio durbz Zack Woods Aquafina Lil real howy Dove Cameron Beck Bennett Tiffany hadish Brooklyn Prince and lesie Jones joining the cast The Angry Birds movie movie review I am a grown woman who has played a Facebook version of Angry Birds since its Inception judge me if you must but suddenly that wasted time has come in somewhat handy now that the inevitable The Angry Birds movie has landed I compete against strangers in weekly tournaments by launching flightless birds of varying shapes Hues and special combative Powers via a slingshot and aiming them at snorty green pigs if you asked me which one is my favorite bird I would pick bomb voiced by Danny McBride in the film because you know explosions and I become an angry lady whenever my ranking slips from the gold league to Silver do I care if the birds have personalities or Back stories not really I just want these Furious fowl to smash into the obnoxious little green porkers while racking up a big score it's a very shallow relationship but probably the longest one I have had with a game since I spent an entire summer trying to beat my friend Angela at lawn darts The Angry Birds movie isn't a total turkey the animation itself is okay and I did laugh out loud once when a poem written by bomb rhymed hate with detonate but it sure has a surfit of derivative stuffing amid all the Frantic chaos in an attempt to distract from the fact that there isn't much that's inventive or even funny here instead of Simply catapulting Myriad puns bathroom related jokes and a hodgepodge of soundtrack songs a Limp Biscuit cover of the who somber Behind Blue Eyes and ton Lock's sexy Wild Thing alongside Demi Lovato's spritely rendition of I Will Survive and a brand new Blake Shelton hdown number onto the screen the makers of this glorified promotion for a phone app should have followed the Let's Go Crazy model set forth by the Lego movie instead of elevating The Angry Bird's concept to surreal Heights of insane genius the filmmakers settle for a tale bogged down by familiar themes plucked from much better films in the Scrat inspired Opening Our Hero read Jason sudakis speaking for the the game's most ineffectual Pig attacker races through a jungle on Bird Island carrying an egg-shaped object that holds a cake while encountering obstacles that inflict bodily abuse turns out he is a party clown for hire with a short fuse who misses a deadline for delivering the hatch day treat he gets violently mad when his customers aren't pleased and the law gets involved sentencing him to you guested an anger management class it's there where he meets bomb and Chuck a speedy big beak yellow bird Josh Gad AKA Olaf the snowman from Frozen and Terren the game's rotund red bird who mainly elicits guttural responses in the manner of lurch from The Adams Family TV show that this round mound of moroseness is voiced by an actor with a rep for hot-headed outbursts Shawn Penn is as clever as the Angry Bird movie gets we also meet the token lead female character the game's butt bombing white bird known as Matilda Maya Rudolph a calm zen-like instructor who will eventually summon her Inner Warrior meanwhile we learned that red was subjected to cruel mockery as a child much of it aimed at his Eugene levys siiz bushy black brows his downbeat attitude doesn't help him fit in with a cheery flock of fellow Island dwellers who shun him as an outsider his skepticism reaches New Heights when a pair of pigs the smooth talking Leonard Bill hater and his piglet size sidekick Ross Tony hail arrives in a pirate-like boat while the other birds buy Into The porine Intruders offer of friendship red goes into Chicken Little mode as he realizes the pigs want to kidnap their eggs in other words their children but everyone else is having too much fun partying down with The Intruders to notice that is a rather grave premise to stick into the middle of a movie aimed at youngsters but perhaps even more concerning is a comic low light involving a washed up Mythic figure and one-time hero known as mighty eagle Peter Dinklage he's a Wizard of Oz type who reped for greatness is currently undeserved his most memorable contribution a rather off-putting depiction of the Aged bird relieving himself for what seems to be an eternity into a lake where bom and Chuck have just been frolicking much to their disgust the finale results in a free for all that basically emulates the actual game in frenetic fashion but the real assault is the number of lame word play gags aimed at the audience when a fish attaches himself to Reds behind he issues this insult bottom feeder when an endless line of hatchlings fill up a crosswalk and block Red's way his response is have you ever thought of bird control then there are the jokes that pop up in passing a poster for Kevin Bacon in Hamlet a book titled 50 Shades of Green a ham radio a sign for free rag chicken a pig version of the twin girls from The Shining and the all to expected green ham and eggs reference as well as a side mention of John Ham however the Angry Birds movie did leave me wondering if something deeper was implied as the birds are eventually won over by red and adopt his get mad stance as they finally fight back is the film attempting to do to anger what inside out did for sadness in other words legitimize is the emotion for children maybe especially when a scene materialized at the end that suggested a sequel is possible now that really fires up my eye red is a grumpy bird who often lets his temper get the best of him this anger leads to a court ruling that requires him to attend anger management classes where he meets a bunch of other ill-tempered birds and he has to commit to calming exercises while the other patients are eager to socialize red would prefer to keep to himself pushing away new potential friendships one day a community of pigs dock off at the bird's Island introducing themselves as harmless new friends but really they want to steal all the bird's eggs red is the only one who sees through their sham even though everyone else is convinced that these swine mean well so The Feathered Grouch has to convince his fellow birds that these Piggies mean trouble I've only played an Angry Birds game once once it was 3 or 4 years ago I can't even recall which game it was so I'm no expert or loyal fan but one doesn't need to be when it comes to critiquing movie adaptations a film is a film regardless of what inspired it the Angry Birds movie is certainly high-spirited with its boun Wy paced comedy and colorful character designs but as a movie it's pretty meth its story is as predictable as they come we know that the the pigs are really up to no good we know that they'll reveal their true intentions eventually and it's more than obvious that the birds will seek revenge once the cat is out of the bag until then we're playing the waiting game counting the minutes until the Rouse is exposed with nothing much happening besides the pigs distracting the birds with dance parties and it's all pretty much filler to say the least to also pass time red and his friends venture to find the legendary Mighty Eagle which leads to the cliche plot of discovering that a hero is a let down who wastes his days doing nothing and it's up to Red to motivate the eagle back into action how many times have we seen this plot maybe in nearly every average animated kids movie and this is what's going to keep us entertained until the finale thanks I don't like it the humor is hit or miss a few lines and gags hit the mark but this wasn't a consistent laugh Riot for me the film is clearly struggling to keep the comedy alive so it reaches for easy gags in desperation the kinds of jokes that are obviously going to make small kids giggle no matter what from pigs slapping their butts at the camera to an awkwardly long urination scene this potty humor is just tasteless and gross a lazy attempt to be funny without taking risks or being inventive The Angry Birds movie is at its most imaginative when the birds finally attack the pigs in a climax that resembles the playthrough of the original video games the very thing that fans came to see the movie for this is when we get to see each bird displaying a unique power crashing into Towers in a satisfyingly destructive fashion all while the villain runs around in a panic unfortunately this sequence overstays its welcome overdoing the novelty of watching Birds smashing into buildings and even young kids might get tired of the repetition red himself is the only character I enjoyed watching a cynical bird who makes the most sense out of everyone he keeps others at a distance while yearning for company making for a relatable lead he might be a grouch but hints of a nice side are sprinkled into little moments and he does eventually let his guard down once pushed into the role of leader proving that he is capable of empathy if others trust him the lesson he learns is surprisingly unconventional too teaching that anger can be justified when the situation calls for it but controlling your temper is just as important that's a pretty risky Philosophy for a kid's film the idea that what you do with your anger is your real test of character what can it be translated to how much of it should you let out anger is a complex emotion it's refreshing to see a children's film address it without saying bottle it up inside the side characters though they're pretty one-dimensional and annoying including bomb the whiny bird with the one trait of exploding Chuck the super fast bird that is only defined by his speed and hyperactive personality imagine hammy from Over the Hedge just unfunny and less sympathetic Terren grunted by an underused Shawn Penn which is admittedly funny is kind of endearing in his own gentle giant sort of way but I can't say that he's a well-defined character Beyond his grunts the villain Leonard is far from threatening or clever being not exactly subtle about his intentions he's just lucky that these birds have been written conveniently dumb enough to fall for his plans to conclude The Angry Birds movie does have a pretty solid lead character vibrant cartoony visuals that are decent to look at plus a rather complex view on the emotion of anger that's quite refreshing but overall it's cliche predictable uninspired and not as frequently funny as it could have been I wasn't exactly let down as I was never an Angry Birds fan in the first place so I can't say that I'm annoyed at my experience but I also can't say that this is a film I'd be eager to watch again other information about this film agreeability gets you so far in life but when the chips are down it helps to lose your temper sometimes that's a pretty unexpected moral takeaway for a kid's movie and it's just one surprise of many in The Angry Birds movie a fast fizzy and phenetically entertaining extension of the manic gaming franchise that at its Zenith had children of all ages glued to their smartphone screens establishing a basic psychological motivation for the fiery disposition shared by The Feathered folk of Bird Island this irreverent origin story takes an appropriately loose elastic approach to its larger narrative with frequent detours to fill in dafier details of its mad mad mad mad story world the result machine tooled and technically lustrous as it is more or less matches the bouncy anarchic Spirit of the game debuted in 2009 by Finnish Corporation roio entertainment while not quite as inspired or subversive as the Lego movie it's a comparably cheering standout in the generally cynical gallery of product inspired product at every creative level it certainly knocks the fluorescent spots off the harmless but charmless ratchet and blank video game adaptation that recently hit theaters for first time feature directors clay Cates and fergo Riley both longtime Studio animators with major Disney and Warner Bros credits to their names it's an impressive step up to the plate from the reach out and touch the screen plushness of the aonomus creatures plumage to the carefully considered 3D design the film is a frequently dazzling feat of craftsmanship saturated in tropical oil pastel shape Shades if the Angry Birds movie arguably arrives a couple of years past the pop cultural peak of its source material the finished film justifies Rio's avoidance of a quicker cash in effort brightly accessible to viewers who have never so much has tapped the app it could easily found a big screen franchise of its own if anything the high gloss beauty of the production sits slightly at odds with the gleefully Scrappy approach of writer John vidy The Simpsons Alvin and the Brethren why does it matter that we're not all the same such statements combined with a rise subplot involving gone to seed bird leader Mighty Eagle Peter Dinklage that warns of the dangers and disappointments of hero worship make a welc stand for individual thought and expression hardly the first outcome you'd expect from a film based on such a hypnotizing gaming phenomenon impressionable Tikes can do what they will with such messages some parents should be warned may never eat scrambled eggs again positive elements red and the other Angry Birds do bravely save some eggs that the pigs plan on gobbling and once they get back home we see how the eggs hatch into scores of cute little chicks reminding us that every life is valuable the bird Community responds by welcoming the ostracized red back into town after his heroic turn spiritual elements a counselor uses the spiritually minded word neast a bird makes a quip about cardinal sin sexual content after the town's eggs are stolen Chuck suggests that they should replace them while thrusting his hips and saying ladies get busy there are several other similar sexual innuendo quips in the mix and then there's this a pair of toilet bowl plungers are used as a bikini top of sorts for a partying Pig celebrating pigs slap backsides Chuck imagines a hero called the Great Eagle as a male stripper the camera swooping in on his flexing backside the Great Eagle uses binoculars to spy on an older woman taking a mud bath violent content the pigs repeatedly talk about wanting to make omelets and other egg Delicacies out of the stolen eggs it's a travesty made all the more uncomfortable by the anthropomorphized nature of the birds and their cute little hatchlings there's also quite a bit of cartoony slapstic humor throughout this pick red is bashed and pummeled from beginning to end and other birds are battered as well the birds also use their ability to take a thump by hurdling themselves via slingshot into and through through the pigs buildings the pigs return the favor by throwing dynamite in the end the pig city is decimated by an enormous explosion and the bird town is pretty much burned to the ground crude or profane language otherwise innocent words such as flock and pluck are substituted for some pretty severe swears at least twice the phrase son of a is left just unfinished the same goes for what the far face is written on a pig's stomach we hear butt dummy and heck a running joke features repeated uses of oh my God as its laugh line other negative elements toilet humor gags are tossed about willy-nilly for example a character urinates as part of his morning routine into Lake water that others gargle with somebody shoots Fireballs out of her backside and a motherb bird regurgitates for her children's lunch sacks red cries out about his aching giblets when hit in the crotch conclusion the things of Life can make you angry so you should use that anger to get revenge that's the lesson Angry Birds has in its cinematic beak and it's a fairly mly one if you ask me especially when you're handing it out to kids who already have a natural tendency of wanting to thump anybody who swipes a toy or two on the playground but what more were we expecting from a a cartoon based on a phone app that shoots myff birds at pigs sure this chucka chick kid's pick is colorful and it launches some cute characters at the screen and some folks will be able to see some sort of anti-bullying statement in it if they squint their eyes and take just the right aim but well I tend to get a bit grumpy about Kitty movies that feature cartoon characters using adult word puns as their main source of Giggles such as this P's use of a fierce call out for some Angry flocking Birds or the discouraged sigh pluck my life can't I at least cry foul over that more details there's some real nice texturing that's what there is I mean real nice Textures in the extreme close-ups of the bird's bodies of which there aren't all that many but enough to make the point you can see feathers that have been individually delineated and even barbs that have been individually delineated all of them moving slightly differently which I guess isn't texturing technically it's even more impressive than Simply Good texturing but anyways you could get lost in those feathers it's miraculously good right up at the level that any studio in the business of 3D CGI animated movies in 2016 is capable of God bless those feathers and I'm spent that's all I've got that's nice to say about the Angry Birds movie based on the 29 smartphone game that was all the rage in 2010 and 2011 The Angry Birds movie would have been terrible even if it managed to come out during the period of time when Society might have been interested in it instead it's both terrible and deeply pathetic the script by John vidy a veteran of not one but two Alvin and the Chipmunks pictures so he knows what's upd draws from the deepest well of cliches of what children's Cinema can be and do marries that to for the parents gags that are objectionable in every way and naturally enough drags itself to the point where it recreates the gameplay of Angry Birds in something resembling an appropriate narrative context I'm being harsh truth be told the point at which the film spends about 6 or 8 minutes recreating the game is done pretty substantially well in the disreputable annals of movies based upon video games I can't offand think of one that recreates the specifics of its source material with such happy Verve nope there sure as hell is a giant slingshot and birds are launched from that slingshot towards a series of rickety wooden structures full of green pigs destroying the structures and clobbering the pigs some of the birds have unique abilities like blowing up or shooting luminous egg like projectiles the film is content not to explain why the movie is in effect a prequel to the game there is an Island full of birds bird Island where everybody is is tremendously happy The Only Exception is red Jason sudakis not trying in the slightest a sullen misanthrop mavian who lives alone on the beach and responds to the endless cheery exhortations of the other birds with withering sarcasm and self- superiority you could almost go so far as to call Red an Angry Bird if you don't have no fear the movie is indecently happy to do it for you red has a job as a children's clown of course because he's nihilist and one particularly unpleasant runin with a client lands him in court where the owl judge Keegan Michael Key apparently the only representative of any sort of government on Bird Island sentences him to the most severe punishment available in that Society anger management class here red meets four of those novelty Birds yellow Chuck Josh Gad moves fast Black Bomb Danny McBride explodes when he gets angry and Terrence Shawn Penn for the tiny number of non-verbal utterances the character is given is enormous and sirly the class is taught by the overclocked White Bird Matilda Maya Rudolph please understand this whole entire Act of the film exists solely to motivate the title when the time comes to save the day Outcast red will have to find a way to use the exact trait that makes him an outcast in order to inspire the rest of his community to follow his lead against their common enemy that whole boilerplate B bull crap I don't suppose that the whole the thing that makes you different from other people is actually what makes you important line is necessarily awful though Lord knows it gets trotted out far too often in far too many generic Kitty flicks but when the specific argument is in favor of being ill-tempered and prone to Violent outbursts it's weird I sh call it bad but it sure as hell is weird So eventually Bird Island is visited by a mechanized pirate ship full of green pigs led by the charismatic bloard Leonard Bill hater and everybody but red greets them with open arms he alone thinks something reeks to high heaven and of course he's right and here's the point where your personal politics along with how uncharitable you want to be towards the movie dictate whether this is a metaphor for immigration or colonialism either way the pigs are bad news and when they abscond to piggy island with all of the birds nests it's up to Red to save the day by making his ridiculously cheerful neighbors learn how to be Angry Birds this is all utter trash of course far above and beyond how lifelessly formulaic it is the humor is repulsively bottom feeding lots of snot gags including one about people sneezing right into your popcorn and all over your face at the movies which seems like literally the worst possible joke to put into a project that people are going to watch at commercial movie theaters a lot of it is about sex in a really elliptical but tremendously gross way you know for the parents frequently the film jams on the brakes for a musical interlude Andor Montage including a mystifying Cowboy themed review the pigs put on for no obvious reason other than because the producers had arranged for country artist Blake Shelton to contribute in original song and something needed to motivate it that's still closer to the best song Hue than the the worst in a soundtrack that includes Sound of da Police and Rock You Like a Hurricane this movie was made for patines in 2016 the worst part of it all is a cover of the who's Behind Blue Eyes recorded by Limp Biscuit that has existed for 13 years and yet I was completely unaware of it until Angry Birds came along to despoil my innocence [ __ ] Angry Birds hardly any member of the cast gives a [ __ ] the reliably shrill Gad is the only one of the leads who feels like he's putting any effort into his character's personality and the only actually good performance is by Peter Dinklage as the brag art demigod Mighty Eagle the film also manages to waste a whole lot of TV comedy ringers Hannibal buus Kate McKinnon Jillian Bell Tony hail tittis Burgess and Ike baren Holtz all pop up to voice characters with as few as two or three lines still and all the film is d derivative crap with no intentions but to insult the audience of the children stuck watching it but it looks okay it's a collaboration between Sony image works and the newly formed theatrical animation wing of roio the company that made the game in the first place and while it's obviously the case that Rio isn't making another movie ever again because in a kind and loving Universe there of course will not be a sequel to this film shut up un trying optimism I can't say I'd mind if there was the film has bold attractive colors and interestingly varied character designs on the birds the pigs are ugly as Sin but even they're kind of well animated all squishy and rubbery I mean to say by all of this the problem with the Angry Birds movie isn't that it's ugly it's actually pretty solid animation that is all it is but it's something let me preface this review by stating that I hold no disdain towards the Angry Bird movie because it's based on a mobile game I know most reviews of the film will be cluttered with complaints and snarky commentary on how Hollywood has run out of ideas and is turning to mobile games of all places for inspiration I honestly don't care at this point where Hollywood gets their ideas as long as they produce something of quality for example The Lego Movie sounds like a wasteland of creative bankruptcy yet it was one of the cleverest creative and Charming films to be released in years The Angry Birds movie doesn't come close to reaching the dizzying heights of The Lego Movie at its best it's a mild diversion from boredom at its worst it's a repetitive slog of puns I like puns just as much as the next person but a 97-minute film can't rely on them to provide the bulk of its jokes simply replacing a common term and making it foul grows tiresome very quickly birthday becoming hatch day natural child birth becoming natural child hatch and birth control becoming bird control are worth a chuckle but nothing substantial to rely on constantly John vidy is credited for writing the screenplay though I reckon Becky Lynch was a ghost writer the only other humor comes from the anger of the protagonist red Jason sudakis granted he comes off as mildly annoyed as opposed to angry most of the time but he has his fits of Rage after losing his cool on a family that won't pay for their gluten-free hatch Day cake red accidentally cracks open one of their eggs prompting their newborn to mistake red for its father the town judge Keegan Michael Key orders him to attend anger management this is where he meets Chuck Josh Gad a hyperactive bird version of quicksilver bomb Danny McBride a bird who literally blows up when angry and Terren sha pen a silent Menace who secretly has a heart of gold and a crush on the instructor the direction by feral Riley and Clay ktie is aimless for a while banking on bird puns and jokes at the expense of Red's anger to carry the film it's once the green pigs arrive that the story finally picks up the pigs convince the town that they explorers looking to make friends with the birds red is suspicious and tries to convince the town that they're up to no good but to no avail despite his rude dismissal of the two Chuck and bom company read on his quest to track down Mighty Eagle Peter Dinklage a mystical bird that is the only one on the island that can actually fly Mighty Eagle is entirely pointless to the film serving only as a false idol to Red the lonely and bullied red grew up idolizing Mighty Eagle despite children picking on him for believing in an urban legend it turns out Mighty Eagle is real but is a wackadoodle as red puts it while the actual purpose of the character is for red to find the hero inside of himself the real reason seems to be to have a lame musical number where he dances around like a buffoon there's also a gross out gag that feels more at home in neighbors too than in Angry Birds where Mighty Eagle is caught urinating in the water that Chuck and bomb were previously drinking out of it's a gross gag but it made me laugh so it's got that going for it Riley and Katie eventually get the film back on track and reveals that the pigs are secretly stealing the bird's eggs for a big Feast they sail off to their island with the eggs in toe leaving the town's Birds to apologize to red and beg for his help he concocts a plan to build their own boat sail over to the pigs Island then launch themselves at their base in order to retrieve their eggs it's at this point the film finally becomes the tower simulation game that it's based off of and it is admittedly Charming albeit brief each bird finds their own ability to exploit with the anger management instructor having the best and most random ability she can fart out fireworks how long until the Avengers recruit a superhero who can fart out fireworks I mentioned The Lego Movie earlier as an example of a licensed property being adapted into a smart and uplifting story The Angry Birds movie never quite reaches its potential but at least there's an attempt where the director struggles to create a worthwhile and engaging story he does his best to instill heart and a message into the mix it's not revealed until the final act so it doesn't resonate as strongly as it should but at least there is one that message being that one must manage their anger and use it to their advantage all the while working with and trusting others it's not a wholly original message but it's a serviceable one this film directed by Clay Cades fergo Riley screenplay by John viddy Story by Mikel head moiko perley John Cohen bason Angry Birds by roio entertainment produced by John Cohen Katherine Winder starring Jason sudakis Josh Gad Danny McBride Maya Rudolph Kate McKinnon sha Penn Tony hail
