Iowa DOT watching for road buckling in hot weather

of the heat continues with KCRG TV 9's Emily shrad she joins us from downtown C rapis and you spoke with the Iowa Department of Transportation Emily are they worried about roads buckling in this heat yeah Beth Leaders with the Iowa DOT say on hot days like these bumps are buckles are always a concern but it's kind of just a waiting game to see when and if that happens as summer temps stick around Eastern Iowa this week Leaders with the Iowa DOT say they're monitoring roads for buckling we're fortunate we don't have the moisture in the ground right now if it would have rained last week we might have had some issues starting and they usually happen in the afternoon when it's really In the Heat of the day Chris litcher garage operations assistant for the Iowa DOT says bumps or buckles are caused when pressure underneath concrete pushes it up causing the hazard he says if that does happen over the next few days the crews will be dispatched to the affected area easiest situation we can usually do is we have a mill machine um we can put that on our skid loader and Mill the bump off and just kind of temporarily repair it till we can get in and get it full that patch but if the road does buckle then it's a little bit hard to repair we got but he adds if you do see a buckled Road call local authorities and be cautious it can turn into a ramp um it could actually turn into like a you know Buckle straight up where it would launch a car or if it was the opposite direction you know with a sharp edge uh car could uh you know they could blow tires but he says Crews try to get roads repaired before it gets to that point now as for staying safe themselves in this high heat ler says his crews are encouraged to drink lots of water and take breaks as needed when they're out on the job advice that many people take when they have to work outside in this high heat reporting live in Cedar Rapids Emily shrod KCRG tv9 News
