live from the north side of Chicago Wrigley Field the show brings you a matchup of division Rivals it's the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs along with Chris Singleton I'm John chambi and Chris we've got an opportunity to watch one of the true superstars of the sport rafhael Dev he of course leads their team home run yeah Bo he's been such a force at the pl and it seems like every time he connects the ball is traveling out of the ballpark so when you have such a threat like that other guys in the lineup should get good pitches to hit because they're trying to get those outs instead of having to face him in a big situation just about to get underway and our pitcher in this game Kade Horton and singy it's Unique these days but he's more of a pitch to contact type of guy yeah Bo he doesn't rely too heavily on the strike out he knows he needs to miss barrels get some soft contact let the defense do work behind him and I think a guy like that can keep a good Tempo don't give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look up they're in line for quality start we'll see what he's got in this one the wi of the pitch Pete Armstrong leading things off it takes a strike first pitch 640 leftand hitter Waits pitch misses and that's ball one the one- one is fouled off and a pitch to third Cruz throws the first in time one up one down we take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton and one guy who's been great for them Jack swinski and boo he's a guy who loves coming up with the chance to drive in his teammates it's like he finds another level of Focus batting over 300 with runners in scoring position this season and you know what because of that I wonder if the guys in front of him will see some better pitches to hit because you don't want to put any free base runners on with him looming in the on Deck Circle right side Des he handles it himself two up two down batting third the designated Jared triolo on the north side of Chicago John shabby and Chris Singleton next is the designated hitter number 19 Horton 22 years old a former first round pick in 2022 in there at the knees that's strike one oh you can throw that big curve on the inside part of the plate very difficult pitch for the hitter to get on plane with you can have a lot of success if you could pitch in that location check swing went around and that is strike two two out Bas is empty gets a piece and it stays and two and down on strikes and a nice ining of work there as he sets him down one two three nothing doing here for Pittsburgh and now it'll be the Cubs turn in a scoreless ball game you're dialed into the show and we're back and towing the slab here Marco Gonzalez he's had his ups and downs in his career as his erra is just over four but this is a guy that's not afraid he's going to take the ball he's going to go out there and give it his best here's O'Neal Cruz picked up in a trade a lot was offered and given to get him but he's got a real high ceiling as he turns on the rubber here with that good live arm delivers there that one a little bit high ball one [Applause] strike one one ball one strike swings and misses one and two we've seen in fasts look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count lined in the left Center and that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second and he's there with a lead off double I'm sure he feels really good about that one nice job of driving that pitch the other on a line you know they take so manys in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn't always translate into the game but right there and he did it perfectly goldette up to the dish he's got the power but great contact skills one of the best contact hitters in the game strike on the inside corner oh the offense really struggled last night I mean it was awful so I I think picking up a run right here that's going to get him going a little bit runner in scoring position no out here in the second game of the [Applause] series pitch misses and one and one Whatever reasons this is a hitter that performs better in night games we'll see what he brings in this [Applause] one falling behind two and one two balls one strike man it's second ball that's inside on the ground to short Galos slings to first one gone bottom half for the first third time now for the Chicago CBS line a guy who's been huge for them over the last month plus O'Neal Cruz well he's been putting up some huge power numbers and opposing pitchers know that they can't make mistakes to them in fact they probably Circle it pregame making sure that if they're in a situation where their back is against the wall they're going to find a way to pitch around it players that are in the top five in slugging percentage in the league really don't get overlooked rafield de stands in now looks at that one inside Cruz the runner at second with one away a strike and the pitch and it in scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it's like everyone else is in slow motion and he's in full speed and that is cut on and missed one one going to be Championship type of ball Club you've got to hit with runners in scoring position and after last night's struggles I'm sure these guys are chomping at the bid to have this kind of opportunity here early in this game bounc to the right he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it an ending in the books tonight and we're scoreless here on the show and welcome back to the ballark second inning set to go at the pl for Pittsburgh Jack sininsky and here it comes oh that got away from and he's going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning so if you had to take one for the team where would you want to get hit Chris I think I'd have to say upper [Applause] hamstring up to the plate is Brandon belts that hits the dirt one and0 [Applause] out runner at first late with the swing there man he was really Tardy on that fast great job of setting him up by throwing the curveball add some velocity to it on the next pitch can't catch up righty delivers lined into right Jones makes the catch Henry Davis Henry Davis the next pirate to hit kind of a throwback no batting gloves and takes low for ball one the pitch on the ground the short could be two throws the first in time that's a good piece of hitting right there the job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go ahead r exactly what happen so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at hard hit right side that ends the [Applause] frame Pirates leave one we'll go to the bottom of the second no score we head to the bottom of the second now it's going to be Danby Swanson Dan [Applause] swans the pitch and a big swing and a miss oh and one [Applause] that's outside and it's a ball and a stri Daryl Parker assigned to umpiring Duty behind home plate and Bo with DP it's sort of a coin flip on those borderline Corner pitches doesn't really favor one side of the plate more than the other sometimes you'll get a little extra the plate and sometimes you won't it does seem like he evens it out over the course of the game though swings through that one one ball two stra boun out to short good Sol fires over to First and Swanson is set down left fieldon here's Byron buckon singing when the year's over he'll a new career high for rbi's in a [Applause] season swinging a foul straight back the wi to the pitch swing and that ball smashed out the line Rodriguez makes a nice running catch batting the designated hrer so up now for Chicago Christopher Morell he's been doing a good job knocking in his teammates over the last 10 games he's knocked in 10 [Applause] runs and there's the strike no SC here in the [Applause] second right through there for a strike he doesn't seem to like the pitch up hasn't offered on either one of those pitches 02 count now I think the's going to climb the ladder out there and now the Lefty foul ball he stays [Applause] alive the pitch that one missed next pitch is downstairs great job of laying those pitches down in the zone to even the count off at two and two such a better feeling for the h now all even up connect on the curve ball struck him out nothing happening there for the Cubs we'll move to the third with no score here Atley field well here we go top of the third scoreless game and nowar Johnson Horton back to work this one chopped on the ground but foul [Applause] and a pitch popped up left side bashet sizes this one up and there's one down Nick Gonzalez Nick Gonzalez the next pirate to hit sh missed one out Bas is empty in the air to left down the line buckon in his right makes the grab and a couple of quick outs good pitch he just kind of had him out in the on that pitch away and wasn't able to stay close so the Pirates batting order turns over Pete Crow Armstrong the next pirate to hit grounded out his first time one not close and it's w to know top of the third no score top of the zone for a called [Applause] strike that time and it's strike two just that fast by him elevated and if you're not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity righty to the plate misses it's a strike out down in order go the pirates still no score ready to go for the last half of the inning and here's the catcher William contr [Applause] will the wi in the pitch ball one no strikes here comes a pitch he's been ranking in recent games and a big reason why getting ahead and counts he's been able to do that consistently and you see the [Applause] results and another [Applause] ball that's in there and the count is three and one [Applause] hit in the air right field he div but can't hang on that's a base hit so man on base to start the Inn but the way Defenders track down balls these days I mean both from the infield and in the Outfield there really aren't a lot of base hits on balls hit like that but there's always a little room back behind the first and second basem to drop a long Dart in there and he found a way O'Neal Cruz will hit next let off this game with a double in there at the knees and it's old one [Applause] lifted in the air right center field swinski sizing this one up squeezes in the batter number 11 B bu bashet the next come to hit he's over one if you don't get ahead in the count you can forget about having any success against [Applause] him is in there one good approach right there something just a little higher that you can Elevate stay on that double play kicks and line drive to short and caught it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high you know when you make contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control here's rapael Des worked to walk in his first trip to the plate [Applause] a strike to [Applause] Des two gone but the goahead run is at first here in the last half of the third and that's off the Inside Edge and the count even one and one [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] the pitch struck him out looking one left for the Cubs and are still scoreless back here in Wrigley Field John chy with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth Conor Joe the pitch and a foul ball you know these Pirates to put it bluntly need to put together more competitive at bats and I don't think they've lived up to their own expectations at the pl I think things are happening a little quicker than this off would like and we see it in the numbers they're hitting into a lot of outs early in the ATB Jones makes the catch and there's one away to the PL now for Pittsburgh is the DH looking his first time [Applause] up there's the strike he pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for success but you can never predict baseball the Pirates yet to pick up a hit here and foul ball [Applause] one down base is empty one ball two [Applause] stength battling here as he fouls it away the onew on the ground des and he takes it himself for the out good fade and sinking action that change got that to roll over so up next Jack sininsky hit by a pitch his first time up and the slider just misses fourth inning underway no [Applause] score swing in a Miss as he was out front the one- one is fouled off [Applause] two down nobody on way to lay off that fast up right there you're looking for something you see well that you can handle but you also have to keep the discipline so that you're not popping up pitches that are just a little too high that one 95 to finish him off and 1 two three go the Pirates and we're still Ed at zero back here at the friendly confines ready to go bottom four here's a big Power throw Mike Trout you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offensively he is the ultimate professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and gets ready for the ball game I tell you what his teammates feed the leadership that he shows on and off the field trout measures 6' 2 in 32 years old and he's a former allstar game MVP next offered in there for a strike and the count one and [Applause] one this to third Joe and a quick out number one well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air let the defense work behind with another ground good exec Nolan Jones now at the plate he's a guy Chris's highlights include some of the best throws from The Outfield that you will ever see definitely one of the best arms of the sport immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter yeah the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance he's going to throw from a warning track if he has two that's to third throws the first already two gone here in the home four the number eight second singing a close play at first worthy of another look with stack cast that was an absolute heater and she just don't see that type of velocity coming across the diamond every day only the best in in baseball reach 90 mph and he needed all of it to get that out bang bang play Danby Swanson stands in grounded out to shorten his first [Applause] trip swinging a miss one oh one's the count [Applause] the W to kick the pitch and there's a foul ball two down nobody on we're here at the bottom of the fourth looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one it's coming down pretty good yeah it is and it's not too bad yet but The Field's not going to be able to hold if the rain gets any worse than this so keep an eye on the pitchers b as well and the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit got three up three down inning over Cubs down quietly through four still tied zip zip we go to the top of the fifth and here's the first B Brandon B the right hander back to work ball one you know these Pirates just start putting together very many good at bats in this one just one base runner to this point and it's not exactly early anymore they have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something but it just hasn't happened for him yet [Applause] right hander kick deals that's outside two and [Applause] one line drive in center field it really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called this rain is not letting up yeah and if we do get a delay the unfortunate thing is the clock's going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won't be able to keep their arms warm forever if it's a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early Davis take slow second trip to the plate in this one the only adjustment he needs to make is his Target if you aim at the outside corner that slider's going to end up way off the plate perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want next offering in there for a strike and the count is one and [Applause] one Bas is empty one away and we're in the top of the [Applause] fif one down base is empty swings through that one he's really good hitting the base the other way soit thech for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fo so digging in Andy Rodriguez 0 for one so far that catches the zone for a strike it's own and one this guy's got a great feel for his break all [Applause] today and that's ball one the Inside Edge and that's ball [Applause] one ball for a strike [Applause] [Applause] all tied up here in the second game of the [Applause] series one two now and ball it's a good take and now two and two and he grounds one to the right side Swanson fires over to First and it's a one two three inning bucks go down quietly halfway through this one still no [Applause] score bottom of the inning so up now for Chicago Byron [Applause] buck as the Lefty gets to work shots missed you know these Cubs just lacking discipline at the ball game they're chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn that around and stay within the Zone I see but I think they have [Applause] to the line of the pitch Bing ball here rolls foul and a pitch and a swing in a miss one gone here there's a small side of relief right there I mean just to keep that speed off the base pass it's not just the pitcher it's other guys that have to think about it from your infielders have to think about that Runner potentially stealing but also be in position to make a play as an out you're thinking about a base hit to the Outfield I got to get to it quickly to try to keep this guy from taking an extra base so I think everyone just a little more relaxed that he didn't reach base and here is Christopher [Applause] Morell and a foul ball [Applause] here's the 02 and that's downed [Applause] away that one way inside straighten him up a little bit kicks and fires spoils the two strike pitch and he'll see [Applause] another and here comes got him swinging chase the fast up the ladder for strike three and now the catcher comes up to him William contrar one for one with a single so far swing and a miss that's strike one he really sells the change up with that arm action swinging a miss in that strike two and two two down nobody on last half of inning number five softly hit to Third and he grabs it foul and the pitch that one down the line [Applause] toss the BT and the Cubs go one two three nothing happening there for the Cubs six inning coming up still nothing on the scoreboard and welcome back to the ball top six here's the second basar Johnson Horton back to work and the first misses for ball one and he deals and that one is in the dirt two and not showing great command so in this bat two count he's got execute here or this could get ugly [Applause] swing and a miss two and one now really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast excellent slider but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there that misses three and one right through there for a boy that was course 31 you want to be really aggressive on the [Applause] fast knocks that one away and we'll do it again in danger of losing the no hitter here and there's ball a great back and forth and that in B he had to play off some really closeit is andeh he found a way to keep theat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it Nick Gonzalez the next pirate to hit Gonzalez having more success against left-handed pitching this season as might be [Applause] expected that's off the Inside Edge ball one fast ball for a strike with the goahead run at first and we're in the top half of the [Applause] six and the count one and two the two strikes may see some movement over there first base trying to stay out of the double play right here righty delivers out to short dive and he's got it throws from the seat of his pants one second to First in time great effort there what an acatic play right there knocks it down throws from the seat of his pants and just looks like he's playing in the backyard he makes it look reallyy easy so up next Pete Crow [Applause] Armstrong and he takes one right on the black and that's strike [Applause] one the pirates still looking for their first hit in this one next pitch misses one ball St he's really working him away this bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield next pitch way upstairs left hand batter weights and the two- on hammered but foul it's so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach and the righty fields and this has struck him out they usually are going to see that inside fast a little long coming in from the opposite side but that pitch really got in on him right there that's a well pitch tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and The Sweet Spot of the bat to the baseball now the third baseman Conor [Applause] Joe first pitch not close [Applause] [Applause] that one fouled [Applause] off two outs in for a strike and got one and [Applause] two the kick in the pitch Runner [Applause] one down base is empty got it by him for the K Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter yeah he's been very frugal today economical with the pitch that is rafield des in the Box a strike out and a walk that catches the corner oh one's the [Applause] count that one finds the Zone o and two that curveball has been a big pitch for him able to get ahead in the count with it he's also been able to use it to put guys away oh that's outside and the count is one and two well that's kind of what you expect in an 02 count excellent job of the hitter to have the play discipline to lay off of that pitch stting to go the one two a check on at to third no swing swing and a drive deep right field Co Armstrong ranges back grabs it right up against the [Applause] wall top of inning number seven the pl for Pittsburgh number 19 well he's back out there to begin the seventh that surprised you at all Chris yeah a little bit it was a little rough sixth inning there but his Skippers got a lot of confidence in him but trust me they will keep a close eye on how he does in this one [Applause] [Applause] Clips the corner moving in the Cubs Bullpen Joe Jimenez up and throwing for manager Craig counsil Suarez a hard throwing rander up as well and a one1 the the Z is having a tough time finding a good Rhythm at the plate their swings are disjointed which tells me they're having issues with pitch recognition and another ball two balls two stries [Applause] out to short bashet slings it across and the lead off set down to open the seven and next will be the cleanup hitter Jack sininsky [Applause] and that gets the inside corner for a strike and he Dodges that grass ball one down empty ball [Applause] at Chase that time here's an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this off 31 count be ready to turn on a fast and the right-hander deals fast for a strike count three and two B is empty one away here the top half of inning number seven in the air out towards right s trout sizing this one up and it's caught for the ey up so next to the plate for Pittsburgh Brandon Bell still no hits on the board one out away from taking the No No into the [Applause] eight in there at the knees and that one fouled off two down do not even close there and it's one and [Applause] two that misses off the outside edge really good two [Applause] strikes that's out to center field trout settles under it nabs it and that'll do it and we're back bottom of the seven here's Mike Trout the pitch and that's off the Inside Edge and that is ball one definitely a frustrating day for the offense but when they look at it had his best painting the corners working on the edges and changing speeds just a difficult one you tip your C that one back up the middle and it gets through so the go-ahead run is on base with a [Applause] knock up next to the and now the right fielder noan Jones base runner you got to stay dialed in here look for in the dirt try your best to get in scoring position Now One Missed [Applause] the pitch and fouled [Applause] off here comes a pitch ground ball right side has some trouble with it gets the first ahead of the runner so they get the first out of the inning the batter Number Eight Second ban Dan B Dan B Swanson the next cup to hit listen there's absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here you nibble you see if he'll expand his Zone but don't give him anything to hit if you walk not a big deal you have a double play opportunity set up and that's in there at the knees for a strike activity in Pittsburgh's bullpen Colin Holderman loosening up in case he's called upon by Derek Shelton Hernandez warming up as [Applause] well misses the Zone one and one and a pitch hamers that one curling down the line and fou a little a good Jobing hands enough to thatch off kicks and that one misses now two and two recogniz that change up right out of the hand just spit on it man it's second on the ground right side and that's just foul the pitch and another ball Byron buckon OD deck for the Cubs [Applause] 32 got him looking and two away now big strike out there as he works to strand that goahead run at second base but job's not done yet got to get that last out before you can exhale and get back into the Dugout it's kind of tough to do with this home crowd applying so much pressure now the left fielder Byron [Music] [Applause] buckon on the ground to the left and it goes just foul goahead run it's second here the bottom of the seven that's outside and it's one and [Applause] one and a pitch that's down and in [Applause] misses and that's B three Christopher Morell waiting for a turn at the [Applause] plate that drops in for a strike definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open and now the Lefty got him looking that's a strike out he in a tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out inside of the jam clearly he's happy with those results back here at Wrigley Field all set for the start of the inning here's the catcher Henry Davis and this lineup is still hitless as we begin the [Applause] E Porton back to work off the plate inside one and0 the W to kick the pitch and that one fouled off the pitch stri two swing and a miss him out first out in the top of the really love the pitch sequence right there I'm telling you what pitcher and catcher on the same page right now Andy Rodriguez the next pirate to hit fouled off he was [Applause] late the Pirates hitless so far in the [Applause] game this one popped up he's under it puts it away for the so they're making the move for a bat Off the Bench Brian Reynolds big bat here so looking for a better match up with a [Applause] left-and outside low ball one all tied up and we're in the top of the eight worm burner into the outfield for a knock so a two out Knock keeps the inning alive so close but there goes the No No with two outs in the I'm sure he's going to want that last pitch back and think about what might have but you know he's really been amazing in this one total control from the first patter on runner at first with two away next to hit Nick gonzal and time is called for a mount visit now big moment in this game so they'll talk it over [Applause] that one's in there and one well I guarantee you after that last visit from the pitching coach all he did was remind his pitcher focus on this hitter and nothing else [Applause] two outs for a strike and it's two perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches him for a couple of strikes now back is against the wall going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly the short stop takes the ball just about to hit that cury Mark 100 pitches for this [Applause] game and a onew stays alive two gone the possible goahead run at first swinging for the strike out chase the B up the ladder for strike three now into the ball game on defense Michael Bush he'll play second so now the DH spot Christopher Morell this guy a player that he gets on the ability to really be aggressive getting around the Bas the L to the pitch in there at the knees that's strike [Applause] one good eye right there man this has been impressive just now getting to 100 pitches as we start this e inning he's given him a lot of length and we'll see just how much longer they'll let him [Applause] go one and two now that's ball [Applause] [Applause] and there's a base hit the left off to a good start with a lead off now could have timed it up any better than that pretty tough for the infield to do that one he P it hard the even when you keep it on the ground it feels great when you hit a Miss like that and now they've got some speed on first so we'll see if they try to get him into motion Derek Shelton out of the Dugout and will make the move Marco Gonzalez will depart and as he heads for The Dugout we'll take a quick break new arm on the mound when we get back on the mound now for the Pirates Colin holder and compared to a lot of other relever strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year so the defense should be active and next for the Cubs William contras one for two right through there for a strike hold one's the count [Applause] and that one missing low to lay off that pitch [Applause] down at the Bel fires rolled softly but that goes [Applause] foul the kick and the pit runner go there's a ball throw to second that goes to show you stealing a base is a tough thing to do and far from a sure thing even with Big Time speed it's not easy to catch him but that was a great catch and throw quick not rushed and accurate next offering way off the plate O'Neal Cruz waiting to hit for the [Applause] Cs one down base is empty liner caught it second man that could have been a big swing in this game just unlucky at a really unfortunate time right there and now here is O'Neal Cruz one for [Applause] three that misses the zone and it's w to know a mistake right here could untie this ball game if you're the pitcher out there you just want to be a little more cautious two down nobody on here the bottom half of the eighth inning hard hit left side to First what a play in and over it's the night and we are tied now on the B Robert Suarez he's having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the [Applause] plate the pitch see the velocity 97 with that fast activity in the bullpen Joe Jimenez up and throwing for manager Craig [Applause] counil right kicks one ball that one almost hit him it's good speed at the top of the order here you want to get it on see if you can get a stolen base maybe get around the bases and pick up a run right-handed [Applause] reliever swing in a Miss it's two two Andie deals gets a piece and stays alive righty delivers uhoh that got him and the potential winning run is a board it's not exactly what they're going for when they say one up one down so up next Conor Joe puts a bunt down in plenty of time for first and that's an out on the sacrifice obviously an important run they're playing for with that sack right there they got the sign from The Dugout pitcher knows you're going to do it he's going to try to make it tough he got the job done at the plate really nice next is the Pirates DH for with two ground outs and a strike out there's a strike and I know you want to be patient as a hitter but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight and he got one right there but left the bat on his shoulder Runner edges away a second right through there for a strike he's behind a hug spot got to do what it takes to come through maybe choke up on the bat a little bit spread out those ever it [Applause] takes out to Center drops into the glove two down next it's the Pirates cleanup hitter Jack s ski swing and a miss slider right [Applause] there strike two righty to the pl and that's outside going to count one and two two down go ahead run and score in position and that just misses man oh man I don't know how you take that as close as it gets kicks and fires and another [Applause] ball POF pitch
