John Durant spoke to people inside the mall this afternoon that tell him they were taking cover as they waited for answers. Police say they were originally called to the mall on a report of gunshots. Luckily that wasn't the case. Instead. Police say the suspects used hammers and fire extinguishers to break the glass of a jewelry store and then made off with some of the merchandise. Some of the people I talked to that were inside the mall at the time said they didn't know what was going on and some other people I talked to say they stayed sheltered in some of the stores inside for around an hour. The heart was racing like people were tearing up. It was very, you have no idea what's going on. Shoppers scattered, confused after loud bangs. People thought were gunshots. As soon as we heard the yelling, I shut our doors and then we shut our gates too. Maddie Dorsey works at a store inside the mall and says businesses like hers were sheltering people. We took our customers back to the stock room because we didn't want to leave them out there. Like, you know, that's not really policy, but it's safety, you know, you have to take them back there. We locked the doors, we put stuff against the door. So if somebody were to kind of bust through it, you know, they wouldn't be able to, police are searching for the suspects. Maria Hernandez says she saw their escape as people were filing out of the mall into the parking garage. Our car luckily was right there. So we jump in and back up and then I'm like, stop, you know, because there's like people running behind the car. But then I noticed they're all in black with masks and hoodies and like it was like three guys and they have backpacks and then they jump into like a little like a small black SUV. After that car drove off, Hernandez thought whatever was going on was over. So like, ok, well, maybe we can go back in, right. So we go back in and we see on the ground broken glass like the residue from the fire extinguishers and then we the mallets they dropped after snapping these pictures, her family was quickly confronted by police and they're like, no, everybody get out and all these police with automatic weapons are telling us to leave like run, run. Luckily, no injuries were reported but people inside are left shaken. It is scary like when you hear that type of stuff and just your initial reaction in Pentagon City, John Durand wu A nine
