Air Canada is offering more flexible rebooking options even as it says it remains hopeful it can strike a deal with Pilots ahead of a potential September strike ctv's Renee Rogers has the latest on this story Rene is there any movement whatsoever in this labor dispute good morning Jamie well no deal has been made which means that it is still a possibility that Air Canada Pilots could end up walking off the job which would impact about th000 flights a day and 120,000 people each day as well now that could happen as early as September 17th that's when a 21-day cooling off period will end putting the pilots in a legal strike position and the pilots are showing that they are serious about that possibility by holding informational pickets across the country yesterday including in Toronto holding signs saying that they are ready to strike now Air Canada and the union which represents about 5,400 Pilots with Air Canada have been trying to hammer out a new deal since last year when their old contract which actually dated back to 2014 expired last week 98% of them voted in favor of a strike if no deal is reached by the end of this cooling off period uh which is once again September 17th so now Air Canada is trying to essentially um you know reassure passengers that everything's going to be okay first off it says that uh it is hopeful a deal can be reached it's committed to bargaining for a deal uh It also says though that anyone with tickets for an Air Canada flight on or near September 17th so from the 15th to the 23rd can change those flights at no additional cost uh however once again saying that it is hopeful that a deal can be made before that time it was just the other day here at Pearson we had many of these Pilots have an informational picket uh what are some of the sticking points for for these Pilots what are they looking for uh well Jamie it might not be a surprise a lot of times in these labor disputes a very big sticking point is wages and that's exactly what uh is happening here the pilots are pointing to other comparable Airlines saying that they've all recently had their contracts red and they've made significant uh raises in those contracts now this is of course not the only labor dispute that we are seeing here in Canada involving uh a major transportation as we know Canadian national and Canadian Pacific Kansas City rail lines have uh both had labor disputes with their workers workers have walked off the job as well there they've been ordered back into binding arbitration so it could the government do the same thing this time Senate to Bar binding arbitration we will have to see but again all eyes will be on that September 17th uh cooling off period day when that will come to an end Jamie at ctv's Renee Rogers we appreciate that report thank you
